00:13:11.000And the excuse of the usual suspect is this is because global warming has meant more rainfall, And therefore all the rain has gone on the land and it will eventually flow back into the ocean and the ocean will rise again.
00:13:23.000But frankly, these excuses that Gore and others come up with are beginning to wear terribly thin.
00:13:29.000And that the truth of the matter is that by a number of different measures, it's now been pretty well established that if we were to double the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere between now and the end of the century, That might cause maybe 1 Celsius of warming.

00:13:49.000Not the 3 or 4 or 6 or 11 that Gore and his mates have been saying.

01:13:19.000It's a very real risk that a solar flare could knock out the power grid.
01:13:24.000And it could knock it out for years in some places, and it could disconnect power from the nuclear facilities that are trying to run coolant pumps to keep their fuel rods from going into a meltdown status.
01:13:36.000We are such a dependent society now, and technology's great, but it's a double-edged sword.
01:13:41.000It took 80 years or more to build our modern system.
01:13:45.000And when a little tornado comes through, or hurricane, you can have places out for three, four months, and it's a national effort to get it back up.
01:13:52.000But if you have widespread systems knocked out, then it causes a cascading where you're literally knocked back to the Stone Age.
01:14:01.000They estimate, because they've been studying the sun for more than 300 years in a modern scientific fashion, that these solar flares are a hundred-year event.
01:14:09.000The problem is, it appears we're entering one of those in the next decade.
01:14:13.000So you're right, it's a once-in-a-lifetime deal, but we're here, and a hundred years ago, we didn't have these systems to be knocked out, but if you go back a hundred years ago, there were events with solar flares that did blow out some of the early cities, that did have electrical systems, and it's happening now, and it's not just you saying this.
01:14:31.000NASA has put out information about this.
01:14:34.000Oak Ridge National Laboratory has actually calculated the risk of a large solar flare knocking out a nuclear facility, and it calculated that risk as being 33% over the 40-year lifetime of a typical nuclear power plant.
01:14:49.000So that's a one-third or 33 in 100 chance for every nuclear facility that exists out there.
01:14:56.000But the really, well, you could say good news or bad news is that these events, and the last big one was called the Carrington event in 1859.
01:15:05.000So that's pre-modern technology, that's pre-electrical grid for the most part, and that's pre-nuclear power plants all over the country.
01:15:13.000They'll make wash lines outside in some areas, literally light up with electricity.
01:15:20.000And power surged through the telegraph lines and actually lit up.
01:15:24.000And they could disconnect their batteries and they could still send telegraphs in some areas because there was so much power surging through these lines.
