02:13:02.000 But yeah, as he explains, it's the story of why I quit my job at the Times, and I've since been trying to share what I learned as an insider at that institution, albeit for a very short period of time.

02:13:11.000 But what I witnessed there seems to carry on, you know, unchecked, regardless of the fact that they printed this supposed mea culpa about what they'd done at the time of the Iraq invasion.

02:13:20.000 I mean, really, that just seems to have been an attempt to clean up their image rather than to change what they do.

02:13:26.000 Well, that's right.

02:13:27.000 I could rant all day about this, but I want to go inside the book.

02:13:30.000 But how's the book doing?

02:13:33.000 I'm surprised this got published.

02:13:34.000 Tell us about your publisher and how that's going.

02:13:36.000 Well, it's not an easy book to get published.

02:13:38.000 Not least because, you know, I'm not one of these big swinging dicks at the New York Times anymore.

02:13:43.000 If you're in that sort of position, you can whistle up a book deal fairly easily.

02:13:46.000 Having walked away from that world and spent 10 years doing other things, for me to now try and talk about what is to the minds of the publishing business like the news media and old story, you know, it's not such an easy thing to sell.

02:13:59.000 And so I took a little while to find a small, fairly niche publisher in the UK called Zero Books, which to their credit published quite a lot of left-field thinking, whether it's philosophy, psychology or political stuff.

02:14:13.000 Yeah, they were good enough to put it out there.

02:14:15.000 The only problem is that they're not very keen on me getting out there to talk to people about it, because really their business model is to sell books via Amazon, and in the end selling books via Amazon shuts down independent bookstores.

02:14:27.000 No, I don't know if it's a question of that so much.

02:14:29.000 You've got to run an expensive logistics operation to make sure you have that.

02:14:29.000 independent bookstores.

02:14:32.000 Yeah, a little bird told me that the book physically is sold out.

02:14:36.000 People can get the e-book for now, but that it's a little more than that, that somebody might have gotten to somebody now.

02:14:43.000 No, I don't know if it's a question of that so much.

02:14:45.000 I think it's more just the case of, I mean, the publisher wants it out there, but they're not prepared to do what it takes to invest in promoting independent writing.

02:14:54.000 Okay, well, let's shift gears out of that then.

02:14:59.000 Get into what you break down and your take on other journalists like Amber Lyon coming out and backing up what you're saying in triplicate.

02:15:09.000 Well, yeah, I mean, it's pretty straightforward.

02:15:10.000 You summed it up very well when you talked about money and power, but there's something else at the New York Times that really needs to be factored into the equation, and it's status.

02:15:17.000 People there are very concerned with how they look and how they appear to those in power.

02:15:22.000 And the reason for that is partly to do with something else you alluded to, that by getting access to those in power, they get information.

02:15:28.000 The problem is, obviously, what kind of information they get and how they choose to handle it.

02:15:33.000 And the job of the New York Times reporter, by and large, is to take the official point of view and make it palatable for public opinion.

02:15:42.000 And no less a person than the editor when I was working there said as much once he left his job.

02:15:47.000 He wrote an article for the Atlantic Monthly in which he said, and I quote here, it misses the point to say that the Times is an elite publication, it is the indispensable newsletter of the United States, professional communities and the main link between those communities and their counterparts around the world.

02:16:03.000 So basically your job is to take dictation from those in power, try and make it more comprehensible to the readership and foghorn that around the world so that leaders of other countries get with the program.

02:16:13.000 And, you know, by and large, that's done because people who are writing for The New York Times have a similar worldview to people who are running the country.

02:16:20.000 So it's a talking point machine for the Council on Foreign Relations, the big banks, the Trilateral Commission, and others.

02:16:27.000 And that's come out, and as you point out, they lied about aluminum tubes, yellow cake.

02:16:32.000 They helped with the incubator story, you know, a decade or more before that.

02:16:36.000 And then they're always trying to fix their image, the Grey Lady, which is a shadow of itself, but they just can't stop engaging in propaganda.

02:16:44.000 And I'm sure you're aware of the latest stuff leaked, where they're running stories by the CIA and the White House.

02:16:51.000 Yeah, there's a very interesting piece I read by Glenn Greenwald looking into the whole process of how somebody who's reporting on the CIA for the Times is trying to shut down the output of a Times columnist that might be in some way minutely critical of the CIA, and he sees his job as being to assist the CIA in getting his message out, which is ridiculous.

02:17:12.000 But coming back to what I saw, the most alarming thing is that no one's actually telling anyone what to do.

02:17:18.000 They're figuring it out for themselves, and they're figuring it out for themselves Not because of some terrible project on the part of the New York Times to promote these interests that they are ultimately serving.

02:17:29.000 It's largely because they believe their own hype.

02:17:31.000 And they believe their own hype on two key fronts.

02:17:33.000 First is objective reporting.

02:17:35.000 They think that they are truly objective.

02:17:37.000 I mean, there's actually no such thing as objectivity.

02:17:40.000 The question really is, whose agenda are you promoting?

02:17:42.000 If you have your own agenda and state what it is, That could be a very noble thing, could be the service of the public.

02:17:48.000 But in their case they pretend they have none, so what they do is serve the agenda of those they get close to as their most influential sources.

02:17:55.000 And then the second thing is this whole conception of what American power is for.

02:18:00.000 And as I say, they buy into these same assumptions as the people they're reporting on.

02:18:05.000 And I can see how that process comes about.

02:18:08.000 They go to the same institutions for their education.

02:18:12.000 They spend time at the same cocktail parties.

02:18:14.000 They become friends with these people.

02:18:15.000 But in the end, you know, they're being used.

02:18:18.000 Yeah, it's a gang.

02:18:19.000 It's a gang to take dictation from the mob bosses, and then they get to go to the parties and scurry around and feel important, and they get paid off with book deals.

02:18:29.000 But the public's becoming wise to that, so their viewership and readership is continuing to plummet, but they're still so arrogant they haven't fully figured this out yet.
