A Chicago Cubs fan is banned for life from Wrigley field for flashing the OK symbol at other fans. Is it racism? Or is it white supremacy? And why should others go to jail for it?
00:04:42.520And my grandfather spent five years of his life fighting those sadistic supremacists known as the Nazis some 80 years ago.
00:04:49.980And luckily for us all, the good guys indeed won.
00:04:54.640Even so, the question arises, was flashing the timeless gesture known as the OK symbol truly an act of racism by that Cubs fan?
00:05:04.340Much of the coverage by the mainstream media has bordered on the hysterical with the reporters resembling villagers brandishing pitchforks and torches as they seek out an audience with the Frankenstein monster.
00:05:17.340But I came across a far more balanced piece in Yahoo.com that rightfully notes that the flashing of the OK gesture might be a bit more nuanced and complicated than one might think.
00:05:31.660Writer Craig Calcaterra notes that while the Cubs are properly investigating this incident, even though they concluded that a lifetime ban was the only appropriate punishment prior to the conclusion of their investigation,
00:05:46.860he states that the full context of the OK gesture and all that surrounds it is worth appreciating before reaching a conclusion on this matter.
00:05:56.020Quote, as explained here by the Anti-Defamation League, that OK style gesture was originally cast as a white power symbol as a trolling hoax by some associated with the alt-right movement.
00:06:10.660The idea? Lots of people make OK symbols on camera and if enough people believe that actually meant white power,
00:06:19.820people who are not engaging in racist behaviour would be accused of doing so, thereby undermining legitimate claims of racism as liberal hysteria or people crying wolf.
00:06:33.080So the genesis of the OK symbol being a symbol of white power was really all a goof.
00:06:39.200But then a perversely bizarre thing happened, thanks to all this trolling, which is to say that actual white supremacists started adopting the gesture, allegedly, in an ironic fashion.
00:06:53.000However, as Calcaterra notes, irony kind of goes out the window when the person acting ironically happens to be a bona fide white supremacist.
00:07:03.260I know it's kind of like that Meryl Streep movie, isn't it?
