00:00:49.860 an accomplished author and she's a humanitarian and she was one of the early early warriors in the

00:02:43.780 um we were at uh an event with april hutchinson over the weekend and i thought as i was talking to

00:02:50.440 i thought man i would read an autobiography by linda blade and so i had quite a life so i had to talk to

00:02:59.060 you more but let's talk about the most top of mind thing so what's happening in alberta with

00:03:06.260 our premier daniel smith i think exhibiting the common sense position on the best way to both foster

00:03:15.880 inclusion but protect the rights of women and girls but also boys and men yes yes well okay first uh

00:03:25.760 just a small correction i should have told you i am no longer president of athletics alberta yeah

00:03:29.760 um that was about a year ago i i moved on because i was doing something with concerted party of canada

00:03:35.980 and i needed to change change uh arenas so to speak um but anyway so yes with respect to um premier

00:03:44.260 daniel smith i think she has uh um woken up earlier than other premiers all those you know

00:03:51.680 premier higgs and new brunswick and scottmo like they all indicated they were concerned about the

00:03:57.220 children but as far as women's sports premier daniel smith should be congratulated for being the first

00:04:03.020 premier to literally come out and say we we understand there's a competitive advantage that

00:04:08.380 men have in women's sports that male bodies have in women's sports and so we need to

00:04:13.420 start working on guidelines in alberta that draw sex-based boundaries around sports so that every

00:04:20.060 sport has at least one category that's female only now she's indicating there can be other categories

00:04:25.480 like mixed sex categories and co-ed and and male but um i think as far as um the way it helps men and

00:04:34.960 boys is that neither women nor men want to have the opposite opposite sex person uh in their spaces if

00:04:43.280 they can help it especially the private spaces and and so allowing people and you know i know the

00:04:49.900 premier has said something a little bit questionable about bathrooms and and locker rooms and stuff so

00:04:56.160 uh just the other day but uh i think they are still beta testing all these ideas and i i just think that

00:05:01.780 the conclusion is going to be reached that at some point you need strict sex-based boundaries in

00:05:06.200 certain contexts now you and i were talking that you were sort of one of the first people to sound

00:05:37.860 well it was it was surreal i guess i'm you know when i first woke up to it i was sitting at i was

00:05:45.400 president of athletics alberta and i was sitting at a national meeting uh where all the presidents of

00:05:51.200 the provinces were sitting around a table in a meeting room and we were based this was 2018 and

00:05:57.500 we were basically told you know our new policy is going to have to be that anybody can self-identify

00:06:03.740 that and to me and of course i asked about it it means any male no matter the age can self-identify

00:06:10.300 into women's sports a girl's sports girls or women teams or or races and um you know i told them i said

00:06:19.820 guys we know the truth look at any record olympic world national provincial school record

00:06:28.260 we all know the difference between male and female and all you're doing here is saying that if you're

00:06:34.800 going to allow a man male to self-identify into women's sports what you're saying is you're going to

00:06:42.280 endorse sex discrimination against women and girls in sports that's what you're doing

00:06:47.040 and they would all and it was the reaction that told me more than anything they all sat down and

00:06:52.520 looked at their hands they looked down at their hands instead of saying linda you know they could

00:06:57.440 have even said something like linda you have a point uh but you know the government says we should do

00:07:01.560 this give me some explanation but instead they were quiet and they just looked down and i it was my

00:07:07.200 moment of truth because i figured okay i'm the one sitting here speaking up and i'm one of the

00:07:11.460 leaders it's either going to be me or nobody says anything and i knew it in that instant i had all the

00:07:18.600 background i was an athlete i was national champion hyptathlon in the 80s you know i have an

00:07:23.880 international certificate in coaching for the world athletics i have i have a phd in human biology

00:07:31.020 including development of children and youth uh in terms of the puberty thing i have uh i'm a coach

00:07:38.120 of athletes in 17 different sports because of my sport performance um profession uh and i was president

00:07:45.000 of a sports association if if not me then who who would be the person to actually have to speak up

00:07:51.860 and argue my point and of course they tried to make me i mean you can't believe like the shunning

00:07:57.340 at coffee time after you speak up or uh the the cold chill that comes across the room silence that

00:08:08.120 um it it was more like this that undertow you know it wasn't actually overly although somebody

00:08:14.300 did tell me you're breaking canadian law when you say that if you say alberta is going to do it

00:08:18.480 differently for your association and you're going to say if you're born male you can't you have to

00:08:24.260 compete male you know you're breaking the law so i told them okay then prove to me because i know

00:08:30.080 the charter says charter of rights and freedom says it's not permissible to discriminate on the basis

00:08:36.740 of sex sex is one of those characteristics listed in the charter so i i basically said to them well

00:08:42.340 then you prove to me how in the world we're being allowed to discriminate like on the basis of sex

00:08:47.700 and nobody could give me an answer so i knew i was right but it just seemed weird and then people

00:08:53.400 would come up to me quietly when nobody was looking and say you know i agree with you but

00:08:59.100 if i said anything i'd lose my job it's always these people who act like oh you're so bad and then they

00:09:05.420 come up to you afterwards when nobody's looking right and all of that behavior sheila just tell

00:09:11.800 told me we're in this dystopian moment where nobody's really allowed to speak the truth

00:09:17.180 or that they they sense that they aren't and i don't know why uh it didn't affect me because i knew i was right

00:09:29.100 so why didn't you just be quiet i mean i know that the overwhelming majority of people out there

00:10:15.700 very on your own speak your truth no matter what kind of people and i had experiences in the nc2a

00:10:23.100 and my first you know i spent two years at university of missouri on scholarship then i

00:10:27.540 transferred partly because there was a scandal at university of missouri where a coach was abusing

00:10:32.100 girls and i was the only one as a 19 year old and 20 year old who stood up and spoke up about it

00:10:38.380 um and i learned early on that you have to stand your ground i mean that was a crazy situation where

00:10:46.340 you know we'd be in a van because we were at missouri and every every you know whether it's university

00:10:51.860 of kansas or iowa or wherever we went it was like a six-hour van ride to that competition and when i

00:11:00.280 decided to come forward and speak up about how the coach was abusing the girls um of course none of the

00:11:06.460 girls wanted to pretend to be my friends because they were worried about the coach taking their

00:11:10.660 scholarship away um and so they pretended like they hated me and then you know we'd i'd be on a six-hour

00:11:17.520 van ride where nobody would talk to me and i went and that yet privately i knew they so appreciated what

00:11:24.960 i was doing but when i finally went to university of maryland um within about two months after i

00:11:31.620 started in the new school this coach got fired and then i had letters from countless girls on my team

00:11:39.500 saying i can't thank you enough for what you did so i had a little early on i had a lesson about

00:11:46.880 standing up for people when you have a chance and the reason the only reason i could speak out

00:11:51.960 sheila was because um i had a i was in the states as a foreign student and they had signed a letter of

00:12:00.680 intent that they couldn't yank my scholarship on a whim uh so as i since i was the only foreign student

00:12:06.600 with a full scholarship i was somewhat protected i had that letter of intent in my hand so i was able

00:12:12.840 and so i did and the other girls couldn't because he could have yanked their funding so i learned early

00:12:20.080 on that you can feel extreme discomfort in a moment but when you know what you see and you speak it

00:12:27.380 when you have your chance there's going to be a great positive benefit in the long run

00:12:35.980 and so maybe experiences like that taught me something early on in life that there are

00:12:43.840 people in this world who will do wrong things and they will gaslight everyone around them into thinking

00:12:50.360 you can't say anything but those who do will win the day and i did and and in this case there i am a

00:13:01.200 leader of a provincial governing body in sport and everybody the social pressure was shut up shut up

00:13:07.660 shut up and i said no i'm gonna speak and i will i have my background i have the bona fides to do it

00:13:18.280 and i will and i did the same thing in world athletics in 2004 or five there was stuff going on and i spoke

00:13:27.900 about it on a committee and i was promptly punted by the president of world athletics and

00:13:32.960 i'm i had people saying later i did the right thing and in fact he got arrested later on uh by the french

00:13:41.000 authorities for some of the things he was doing so i mean i don't know it's just so one of those

00:13:45.260 things that my whole life i seem to be in this position where i'm tested that way and i have to say

00:13:50.400 something so this isn't my first rodeo yeah now what sort of professional consequences have you

00:13:58.580 faced this last time you've been speaking out about the wrong before you nothing good

00:14:05.800 that's why i should do it exactly seriously like the imagination people have that they're going to

00:14:14.080 suffer and then some people really have like april hutchinson got suspended um that's why i admire her

00:14:19.840 so much for some reason every time i speak out and and i feel like i'm i'm being vulnerable

00:14:26.240 i don't know for some reason nothing much happened i mean i i guess i made the assessment that i'm a

00:14:32.220 i am a um private consultant in sport so i have my own business so if anybody's going to fire me it

00:14:40.160 would be one of my clients who's hired me to help them be better at the sport like a hockey player i

00:14:45.580 could take hockey players and teach them how to skate faster by teaching them how to run faster

00:14:49.440 because it's all you know rpms around the hip joint if i can teach a hockey player how to move faster

00:14:55.340 and he's asked me to do that um then you know something he says to me well i hate your bigoted

00:15:02.780 point of view and i don't want you coaching me anymore i'll say well good luck to you okay

00:15:08.020 next client step right up like i like to me it wasn't like i was ever going to get fired in that sense

00:15:20.440 so i want to ask you because one of the things that we heard uh from the crowd in lloydminster over

00:15:31.100 the weekend was where are the men and i think april rightly retorted well also i've get i get a lot

00:15:39.360 of heat from the women too there were there's this strange dynamic where men have been told i think

00:15:47.320 through uh modern feminism that chivalry should be dead and so it's dead those a lot of modern feminists

00:15:57.060 got what they asked for but a lot of women are the enablers of this complete and total reality denial

00:16:05.480 and for me on the outside looking in i see there's a lot of people telling women to shut up which is

00:16:11.400 a tale as old as time yeah well it is fascinating because uh i made the point about how for example

00:16:19.080 matt walsh had the wonderful movie uh what is a woman it was brilliant we all it was like wow you

00:16:27.900 know it's everything you want to see in terms of exposing this lie but at the same time uh matt walsh

00:16:35.480 didn't really interview people like posy parker and megan murphy the women who had been fighting

00:16:43.140 who had been making the exact same arguments he made like six years before him so there was no

00:16:49.260 acknowledgement that those kinds of feminists had been speaking out and had been doing the hard work

00:16:54.220 behind the scenes but then when men and like when it went big time and the movie is well received

00:17:00.000 uh and popular then all the men on the for example sort of center to the right say where are all the

00:17:08.060 feminists uh and that question is kind of bizarre to me because feminism isn't one big blob right it's

00:17:16.200 not like we all have a hive mind where we all speak the same thing and that no women are fighting for

00:17:21.220 this i mean i'm being called a feminist mind you when i was growing up being a feminist was the last

00:17:26.440 on my mind i just wanted to compete and coach and it was only entering this fight that i realized that

00:17:32.000 some feminists have a good point and i want to help them make that argument and so now i'm being called

00:17:37.100 a feminist and i don't mind that it's just that i i don't even know what that word really means i mean

00:17:41.820 people say well if you're in favor of women's rights then you're a feminist yeah but there's

00:17:46.760 there's intersectional feminists third waivers and beyond who really believe that allowing men and

00:17:52.420 women's rights this is the way we can show the world that men and women are equal when it's showing

00:17:57.680 exactly the opposite it's showing men and women are distinctly different and yet you have the radical

00:18:03.120 feminist meaning the original radical doesn't mean far left in this case radical feminist when you use

00:18:09.040 that word it just means the original feminist like wave one which was the right to vote second wave

00:18:14.540 the equal pay for equal work like the sensible feminists are the radical are control are called

00:18:21.000 radical feminists and they all believe and they've been fighting they are the ones like

00:18:26.100 megan murphy and and posy parker doesn't say she's a feminist at all but i mean i'm just saying there's

00:18:31.280 this whole sector of women that are indeed fighting hard like look at riley gains so when somebody some

00:18:38.280 guy says well where are all the feminists i ready to go right away and think to myself are you not

00:18:42.680 seeing riley gains okay she doesn't say she's a feminist but she's making the same arguments as the

00:18:48.040 radical feminists so it's a little bit too simplistic to say where are all the feminists

00:18:52.840 like we're all distinct just like it would be like saying we're all the men there's some really

00:18:57.300 strong men in this fight you know um really really important people whether they're senators whether

00:19:04.080 they're matt walsh whether they're whoever there's you know like graham linihan there's in the uk

00:19:11.200 there's so many men who have stood up and even them paid the price for speaking up about women's

00:19:18.420 rights to sports to fairness to sex-based rights and i just think that um yeah it's i think one of

00:19:27.120 the things about um intersectional feminists the more modern ones who want to allow men and women's

00:19:33.120 sports they don't watch sports at all i think most of them don't even know what sport anything about

00:19:38.460 sport like they aren't the ones reading sports section in the newspaper they're just using sport

00:19:43.660 as their their template for social reform without understanding because i've heard a lot of women

00:19:51.760 say when i've watched their programs and they go well yeah but we know that if a man just takes the

00:19:57.260 right hormones it'll all be the same they don't understand the science does not prove that at all

00:20:08.120 that when you take a man and you start reducing his testosterone and putting an estrogen in the

00:20:13.380 system it does not diminish his competitive advantage in sport there've been 19 studies so

00:20:18.380 far showing that and yet you know there here comes along an intersectional feminist of that variety

00:20:24.840 saying well no no everything's being equalized when he takes a hormone as if women are just a

00:20:30.700 lower like women women are just men with lower testosterone like that is just not true we're just

00:20:43.640 the left then tell you know the trans activists they'll say isn't it a little bit sexist abuse to

00:24:44.400 of kids who are carrying water and uh bailing the hay uh having any question about who they are

00:24:59.160 thing yeah i do too um you raised an interesting point in your speech in lloyd minster and i just

00:25:06.000 want to hear one more time because it's very compelling um that by protecting women's sports

00:25:13.680 you're also protecting trans people in sport yes and i think that's a point it's never been made before

00:25:31.940 somebody trans means that you acknowledge you were born one way and you want to yeah so there are

00:25:36.760 people born male who are who want to become women so they there's male born trans people and there's

00:25:43.480 female born trans people now the female born trans or now people who call themselves non-binary but

00:25:50.540 they're female born they stay in women's sports we already accept them we already have those

00:25:57.060 trans trans in our sports you never hear about them because they're female and they're women's

00:26:00.780 sports they're the tomboys and basically so all i'm saying is if you then take the the men who are

00:26:09.860 trans guys born male who now identify as women and you throw them into women's sports

00:26:15.320 those trans who are male are literally discriminating against the trans who are female

00:26:23.080 right and non-binary as well as everybody else there so it's actually they're the ones being

00:26:29.200 transphobic because they're the ones inserting somebody in another category in a way that hurts

00:26:35.640 another trans person and discriminates against them on the basis of sex because sex they say they're the

00:26:42.440 ones who say sex and gender are two different things so if they're a certain gender and that gender

00:26:46.960 discriminates on the basis of sex it's still hurting another trans person anyway i'm making it too

00:26:51.800 complicated it's that men who come over and want to be women are actually discriminating against

00:26:56.460 the trans who happen to be born female who have stayed in women's sports by and large and that raises

00:27:03.800 another question if the women if the female athletes accept the trans and non-binary in their midst

00:27:11.600 why are we even doing this why can't the men simply accept the male athletes who are trans in their midst

00:27:44.280 your body with the body you were born with and sex-based guidelines according to your biological sex

00:27:50.080 but suddenly there's a special group of men who think that they could come over because they just don't

00:27:57.480 feel comfortable with their fellow they don't get the affirmation with their fellow men

00:28:01.680 and so they're seeking extra affirmation which the female trans that never almost never demand

00:28:10.120 so it becomes this another way the 2024 version of the 1950s where once again the male population

00:28:22.100 is forcing women and girls to deal with their problem

00:28:26.160 yeah it's just as this just as misogynistic as anything ever happened before but now it's now we're

00:28:34.440 supposed to celebrate it these glamorous men coming into women's sports and profiling themselves and

00:28:42.100 so when i think about it then you go and say to the men who are athletes you know i i am with men all

00:28:49.820 the time in sports of course because i coach a lot of males why won't why wouldn't you just accept a

00:28:55.800 person who let's say a man wants to identify as a woman why can't you just accept that guy in your race

00:29:01.320 and all of them tell me we're ready we want to accept that guy yeah it's the trans who are male

00:29:08.560 who are insisting they must come to the women in order to affirm their identity so it we're listening

00:29:16.680 to a really small sector of just men who are insisting on parading themselves into women's sports and

00:29:25.000 using women's sports get this as a method of social therapy they're using female sport for social

00:29:33.400 therapy that's all this is yeah and i saw that right from square one i said why leave sports out of this

00:29:42.340 do your own thing over there with the guys they'll accept you

00:29:46.120 yeah it we've gone from a certain subset of men you know half a century ago telling us there were

00:29:55.280 things that we couldn't do we had to stick to ourselves so we kind of did in some aspects and

00:30:01.500 now we have another subset of men coming along and saying that uh they're better than us at our own

00:30:08.420 things it's or even more than that yeah it's pure misogyny and it's actually more than that she like it's

00:30:16.120 a subset of men who think their rights supersede the rights of women and girls to fairness right

00:30:31.960 the man who's trying to get into women's spaces he's saying well i just didn't feel comfortable

00:30:37.840 like men's locker room and bathrooms feel stinky and smelly and and yeah so now you want to come into

00:30:44.940 our bathrooms and make our bathrooms stinky and smelly and unsafe oh how how convenient of you

00:30:50.200 to come over to our side as a male and now bring that all over to us because the minute he's allowed

00:30:56.560 into women's spaces so is the next guy whether he's really trans or not so is the next predator who

00:31:02.440 decides he wants to just use social therapy as his you know his gate to come in if you don't have

00:31:09.800 complete protection of the female space that's what's going to happen there's no exceptions

00:31:25.080 that certain people think they can bend biological reality to their own thoughts and feelings and that

00:31:33.880 women and girls should be forced to affirm their choices at the expense of the opportunities of the

00:31:42.180 women and the safety and comfort of the women and girls it is narcissism yes and in fact using the
