President Trump announced today his endorsement of the First Step Act, a criminal justice reform
00:00:05.540
bill with bipartisan support. Ironically, just as creepy porn lawyer Michael Avenatti,
00:00:11.140
you know the male feminist, is arrested for beating a woman. We will analyze the case for
00:00:15.920
and against letting criminals like Avenatti, allegedly, off the hook. Then Michelle Obama
00:00:21.300
keeps gaslighting, Flake keeps flaking, and Nancy Pelosi possibly loses control of her own party.
00:00:26.960
I'm Michael Knowles, and this is The Michael Knowles Show.
00:00:30.000
We've got our first bipartisan agreement in a very long time, which is how you know we should
00:00:42.520
oppose it. Whatever it is. If you've got Republicans and Democrats agreeing on something,
00:00:46.920
it's probably no good. We will get to the First Step Act and break it down. But first,
00:00:50.800
let's make a little money with purple mattress. So you see, you're here in my boudoir on the road
00:00:55.620
in my hotel room. That mattress back there, that's not a purple mattress. That's why I look underslept.
00:01:01.440
I don't feel as good as I usually do. Purple mattress is unbelievable. I am proselytizing
00:01:06.140
for purple mattress. It is so good. It's not an inner spring. It's not exactly a memory foam.
00:01:11.080
It's this brand new material. It sleeps both cool. Well, it sleeps very cool. But it's also both firm
00:01:18.340
and soft. Somehow it's both of those things. It is unbelievable. I love it. It is a tremendous
00:01:23.680
product. It was developed by a rocket scientist. It's unlike any mattress that you've ever slept
00:01:28.220
on. Highly recommend it. Right now, you can take advantage of the 100-night risk-free trial.
00:01:34.340
If you're not fully satisfied, you can return that for a full refund backed by a 10-year warranty,
00:01:39.660
free shipping and returns, free in-home setup, and old mattress removal. You will love purple.
00:01:44.340
You will not return it. I'm telling you. I got back problems. I got back problems in my family.
00:01:49.060
I have never slept better. Go right now. My listeners will get a free purple pillow
00:01:53.020
with the purchase of a mattress. A free purple pillow. Those are expensive pillows,
00:01:56.900
and they're very, very nice. That's in addition to all the other great free gifts they're offering
00:01:59.840
site-wide. Just text COFEFE, C-O-V-F-E-F-E, 247-47-47. That is the only way to get this free pillow.
00:02:08.860
Text COFEFE, C-O-V-F-E-F-E, 247-47-47. C-O-V-F-E-F-E, 247-47-47. Do that right now.
00:02:17.780
Do that while you're listening to me explain the First Step Act to you. So this is a big moment.
00:02:23.360
President Trump just endorsed the First Step Act. He had Democrats and Republicans behind him.
00:02:30.260
The President Trump's members have reached a bipartisan agreement. Did I hear the word
00:02:45.960
That's a nice word. Bipartisan agreement on prison reform legislation known as the First Step.
00:02:53.680
And that's what it is. It's a first step, but it's a very big first step.
00:02:57.240
Today, I'm thrilled to announce my support for this bipartisan bill that will make
00:03:02.480
our community safer and give former inmates a second chance at life after they have served their
00:03:08.660
time. Okay. So I do, I do like that he opens up. He's joking about bipartisan. This actually does
00:03:13.880
help him in the sense that the left is trying to portray him as this very partisan, very extreme
00:03:19.620
figure when really he is willing to work with Democrats. I think he's actually eager to.
00:03:23.880
They're just too foolish to take him up on the offer. But what is this act?
00:03:28.420
The act is called the First Step Act. It is the Formerly Incarcerated, Re-Enter Society,
00:03:33.820
Transformed Safely, Transitioning Every Person Act because congressmen love stupid acronyms. That's
00:03:41.720
why Formerly Incarcerated, Re-Enter Society, Transformed, Say, okay, blah, blah, blah. Really what
00:03:46.160
it is is rehabilitation programs for early release for criminals. That's the whole thing. The left is
00:03:52.060
denying this. The left is denying that this is all just about early release for criminals,
00:03:56.660
but that's what it is. Vox.com said, the bill would not reform or reduce how long people are
00:04:03.020
sentenced to prison for, which has been the prime target of criminal justice reformers over the
00:04:07.360
past few years. Instead, the bill focuses on rehabilitating people once they're already in
00:04:12.820
prison by incentivizing them with the possibility of earlier release to partake in rehabilitation programs.
00:04:19.100
It's not quite a contradiction that they've just made, but it might as well be. They're
00:04:24.300
saying, oh, it doesn't reduce how long people are sentenced for. It just reduces how long they're
00:04:29.620
in prison for. Okay. That is a real distinction. It's a real distinction in so much as there's front
00:04:35.740
end prison reform and there's back end prison reform. The front end is it decides how long people are
00:04:40.540
going to get a sentence for. And then the back end is how long they actually stay there. But the effect
00:04:44.420
is the exactly the same, which is criminals getting out of prison early. That said, some
00:04:50.160
conservatives are for it. Obviously, president Trump, uh, the heritage foundation, heritage
00:04:54.900
foundation, fellow John Michael Seibler is for it. He gave a long explanation, made a conservative case
00:05:00.120
for it. So did Mike Lee. I love Mike Lee. I like a lot of these things, Donald Trump, the heritage
00:05:04.440
foundation, Mike Lee, but I'm still very skeptical. Mike Lee opens up his piece defending it today.
00:05:10.080
And he, he refers to common sense sentencing reform. Whenever I hear somebody talk about
00:05:16.480
common sense, blah, blah, blah, legislation, I run away because it never seems to be common sense.
00:05:22.580
They say common sense. I think they protest too much. It's one of those mealy mouthed words that
00:05:27.700
the right and the left both use, but it makes me skeptical. And then Mike Lee in his piece goes on.
00:05:32.940
He tells the story of a young father of two who got caught by an informant selling pot. He sold
00:05:39.100
three dime bags of pot to an informant. Uh, while he was in possession of a gun, he got a 55 year
00:05:44.300
sentence. Notice how they try to bury certain things in here. So it's, it's a young father of
00:05:48.940
two. Okay. That's fine. Um, he, he happened to be in possession of a gun, but he wasn't, he didn't
00:05:54.760
shoot the gun. He didn't grab the gun. Okay. That's fine. Because we all would agree that passing
00:05:59.480
out three dime bags of pot is not worth spending most of your life in jail. Uh, we, I think we can all
00:06:05.660
agree with that in Los Angeles, there are billboards now for marijuana delivery services. So it's legal
00:06:12.100
in many States, but it's still illegal as a federal matter. So we would all agree with that. However,
00:06:17.880
one, if you're the father of two, don't sell drugs, don't be a drug dealer. Just my first guess a two,
00:06:23.360
if you're the father of two, who's selling drugs to make his money, don't carry a gun. That sounds
00:06:30.100
pretty stupid. Don't do that either. That said still, maybe he shouldn't go to jail for 55 years.
00:06:35.260
Fine by me, reform that law, reform the mandatory minimum for selling three dime bags of pot at the
00:06:42.480
federal level. Fine by me, no issue. But that's not really what the first step act is about.
00:06:47.240
One of the issues he brings up that it's a father of two, I think, because one of the real issues with
00:06:53.400
imprisoning people is it can wreak havoc on families. Obviously if you're in prison for 50 years,
00:06:58.980
you can't raise your kids, you can't be with your wife. A lot of conservative wonks have pointed out
00:07:04.160
that each year behind bar increases the likelihood of divorce by 32%. So every single year that you're
00:07:12.100
incarcerated, your chance of divorcing your spouse goes up by 32%. Eventually you're almost certainly
00:07:17.380
going to get divorced. Okay. That's not a good statistic. We're pro-family as conservatives. We
00:07:22.160
don't want that. However, what they forget to tell you is that very few inmates are married.
00:07:26.260
So even, even in 2002, which was the closest study I could find on this, only 16% of inmates were
00:07:33.020
married. And I can only imagine that, that, that number has decreased in the last 16 years.
00:07:38.720
And a lot of evidence suggests that it is. So the better point I think that conservatives could make
00:07:43.680
if they want to support the first step act is specifically on black families, because black men
00:07:49.160
account for 6% of the country. They account for 38% of prison inmates. That's true in, at the state
00:07:55.240
level, that's true at the federal level. So obviously there's a hugely disproportionate number
00:07:59.880
of black men committing crime and then being sentenced to prison for crime. This obviously reduces the
00:08:06.600
availability of those men for marriage. And it's been suggested in some quarters that this has caused
00:08:12.200
the breakup of the black family. There are other causes of that too, but marriage has declined
00:08:17.020
immensely among black Americans from the 1960s to the present. The rates of marriage in the 1960s
00:08:23.760
for blacks was 61%. Today it's 38, or I'm sorry, today it's 32%. So it's, it's almost cut in half.
00:08:30.400
Now, what are some causes of that? Maybe prison, maybe, uh, welfare as, as, as Daniel Patrick
00:08:36.680
Moynihan suggested, maybe the, the reason I, I think it's probably much more cultural and has much more
00:08:42.000
to do with government programs, uh, like welfare dependency, which incentivizes breaking up the family
00:08:47.760
is that there's been a major marriage decline among white people too. So among whites,
00:08:52.240
marriages declined from 74% to 56% during that exact time, not as greatly as the black family has been
00:08:58.600
broken up, but still a pretty huge chunk. One of the major Republicans campaigning against the first
00:09:05.620
step act is Tom Cotton, excellent Congressman. Um, Tom Cotton, uh, has now, apparently this is all just
00:09:14.020
being reported by various sources has been lobbying various law enforcement groups to drop their support of
00:09:19.540
the measure. Apparently it was his campaigning that was responsible for the law enforcement
00:09:24.580
association, or I'm sorry, the federal law enforcement officers association from dropping
00:09:29.360
their endorsement for it. And what Tom Cotton says, he goes out pretty boldly. And I 100% agree with him
00:09:35.260
on this. The problem in America is not over incarceration. You hear this from the left. You heard
00:09:40.740
from libertarians. You hear it from conservatives. They say, Oh, the problem we, we over incarcerate.
00:09:45.280
There are too many inmates in our prisons. No, the problem in America is under incarceration.
00:09:50.840
We don't catch enough of our criminals. Law enforcement in this country identifies 19%
00:09:56.120
of the perpetrators of property crime. 81% of people who perpetrate property crime just walk free.
00:10:03.480
They're, they are never even identified. This is maybe lucky for them. It's very merciful to the
00:10:09.860
criminals, but for the people who have their property destroyed or stolen, it's not merciful at all.
00:10:14.120
They're being wronged. And that's injustice. How about violent crime? Law enforcement identifies
00:10:18.940
only 40% of violent criminals in America. So fewer than 50% of violent criminals get identified and are
00:10:28.300
even brought up for criminal justice in the first place. 53% get away. That is way, way too much.
00:10:36.080
So what are some good things about this bill? I would say the, the, the good thing about it is that
00:10:42.100
it's not terribly extensive. It, uh, it's, you know, it still keeps people in prison for a while.
00:10:48.080
Jared Kushner identifies why eat conservative supporting this is wrongheaded. Jared Kushner
00:10:55.000
said, quote, the biggest thing we want to do is really define what the purpose of a prison is,
00:11:03.140
is the purpose to punish as the purpose to warehouse, or is the purpose to rehabilitate?
00:11:07.180

00:12:38.920
slash covfefe. Terms and conditions apply because they always do in this life. So Jared Kushner is saying
00:12:44.780
about criminal justice reform. Apparently he's one of the big people pushing this in the white house.
00:12:49.000
He's saying, what is the purpose? Is the purpose of prison to punish or is it to rehabilitate? And
00:12:55.360
I think Jared is very smart. I think he's a very capable guy and he is falling into a classic
00:13:00.280
misunderstanding. The purpose of criminal justice is justice. It is to punish people who have committed
00:13:07.240
crimes. If the purpose is not to punish them, then there's no reason to have them there in the
00:13:12.220
first place. If the purpose is just to rehabilitate, then how can we only do it against criminals?
00:13:17.460
There are plenty of people who need a lot of rehabilitation. I could probably use a little
00:13:21.540
rehabilitation in my life. Why is it that we only apply it to criminals? We only apply it to
00:13:26.860
criminals because the primary purpose of criminal justice is to punish criminals. It is retribution
00:13:33.460
for crimes. So I totally understand how if you lose sight of that, if you lose sight of the value of
00:13:39.220
punishing criminals, you would absolutely before all let the prisoners out, put them into lovely little
00:13:46.100
daycare facilities where they can learn to be nice and sing kumbaya. That's fine. But as Adam Smith
00:13:52.020
pointed out, mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent. This certainly applies at the level of
00:13:57.020
our government and of a criminal justice system. And by the way, the more that you introduce these
00:14:02.720
kind of programs, which give preferential treatment to some people who try it out, not other people,
00:14:06.620
and at one level, but not another level, you are increasing the injustice. So to Mike Lee's point,
00:14:11.580
if some poor guy, he was selling drugs when he shouldn't have been, he had a gun, maybe he
00:14:16.740
shouldn't have had a gun on him. Maybe he shouldn't go to jail for 55 years because of that. That's
00:14:21.780
fine. If you want to reduce it to 10 years or five years or, or I don't know, three years, do whatever
00:14:27.940
you want, or you want to legalize pot. Again, that's fine. If you want to vote on it, make that a
00:14:31.660
law. But to, as a matter for federal inmates, give them this ticket out of jail, it seems crazy.
00:14:39.380
The other good thing about this is it only affects federal inmates and the majority of inmates are in
00:14:44.380
state prisons. But still, we should not let this creep into our conservative conversation
00:14:48.600
too much because it is totally missing sight of the purpose of prison. Speaking of people who might go
00:14:55.240
to prison, Michael Avenatti. I don't know if you've seen this today, kind of a sad story. It's an,
00:15:00.080
it's ironic. So there's a little schadenfreude for the creepy porn lawyer. He's been arrested
00:15:04.440
for beating a woman. Obviously feel horrible for the woman. If these allegations are true,
00:15:10.760
that's a terrible thing. The only good thing out of it is that Michael Avenatti is getting what's his
00:15:16.440
because Michael Avenatti, this guy has shamelessly portrayed himself as a women's advocate. He says he's
00:15:23.380
a women's advocate his whole life. What did I tell you? What did I tell you about male feminists?
00:15:28.360
I just gave a speech on this the other night in How to Be a Man When You Look Like a Maddow.
00:15:32.680
Male feminists are the creepiest people on the face of the earth. If a male feminist comes walking
00:15:37.640
around your daughter, run in the other direction. Pick him up, throw him into the next town. Do not
00:15:43.200
let him around your daughter. They're very creepy. How many, uh, how many feminist gallows did Harvey
00:15:47.900
Weinstein go to? I think a lot. How many, how many feminist gallows was he smiling with Meryl Streep
00:15:53.440
and Oprah Winfrey at? I think a lot. He's still a big creep. And we know Avenatti is a creep,
00:15:58.320
but now he might beat women as well. Avenatti for his part is vehemently denying the charges. Here he is.
00:16:05.020
First of all, I want to thank the hardworking men and women of the LAPD for their professionalism
00:16:12.080
and their work today. They had no option in light of the allegations. Secondly, I have never struck
00:16:22.460
a woman. I never will strike a woman. I have been an advocate for women's rights my entire career,
00:16:31.080
and I'm going to continue to be an advocate. I am not going to be intimidated from stopping
00:16:38.160
what I am doing. I am a father to two beautiful, smart daughters. I would never disrespect them
00:16:48.000
by touching a woman inappropriately or striking a woman. I am looking forward to a full investigation,
00:16:56.980
at which point I am confident that I will be fully exonerated. I also want to thank everyone
00:17:04.660
for their support that has reached out. You know my character. You know me as a man, and I appreciate
00:17:12.120
it. Thank you. My character. Oh, Michael Avenatti's character. What is, everybody knows Michael
00:17:18.940
Avenatti's character, don't they? He's a creepy porn lawyer. That's his character, who exploits women
00:17:24.100
to try to advance his own would-be political career, which has just gone up in flames. Stormy Daniels
00:17:29.320
says she might find a new lawyer. She says if the charges are true, she's going to dump him and find a
00:17:33.660
new lawyer. Not even good enough for Stormy Daniels, Michael Avenatti's character. We know
00:17:38.400
his character is that he dug up a bunch of fake accusers also to propel his own political career,
00:17:45.740
for which he is, by the way, being criminally investigated now. That's great. He said he also
00:17:50.680
won't be intimidated. Do you realize what he's saying by that? When he says, I won't be intimidated,
00:17:54.780
what he is implying is that this is a false charge. Now, I don't know how good your memory is.
00:18:01.260
A few weeks ago, Michael Avenatti was leading the chorus of saying, we need to believe all women.
00:18:07.040
We need to believe Julie Swetnick. We need to believe known liars because women can't lie.
00:18:12.480
Women never lie. So it was believe all women until they accused Michael Avenatti.
00:18:17.000
What a jerk. So what are the charges? TMZ, this is according to TMZ, a woman filed a felony
00:18:26.140
domestic violence report concerning Michael Avenatti. She showed up with a face, quote,
00:18:32.380
swollen and bruised with red marks on both cheeks. This incident allegedly occurred on Tuesday,
00:18:38.920
but the confrontation that everybody's talking about was on Wednesday. This was when a woman
00:18:43.520
was on a sidewalk with her cell phone with sunglasses on to cover her face because she'd
00:18:48.640
apparently been beaten. She was sobbing and screaming into the phone, quote, I can't believe you did this
00:18:54.360
to me. I'm going to get a restraining order against you. This is when all of a sudden Michael Avenatti
00:19:00.280
bursts into the scene and Avenatti shows up yelling, she hit me first. And then he added,
00:19:08.960
this is BS. This is effing BS. This is when she hit me first. That was his excuse. We'll go into
00:19:14.880
the legitimacy of that excuse in just a second. But first, let's thank a new sponsor that we have,
00:19:19.660
Brownells. Oh, Brownells. Now we're talking about a company that supports the second amendment that
00:19:26.480
has for 80 years when they called. They said, hey, Michael, we're one of the biggest gun marketplaces
00:19:33.880
out there. You got all your guns, you can get your accessories, you can get your ammo, you can get all
00:19:37.580
this. Do you think that your listeners would like that? So, you know, I think I have a feeling they
00:19:42.220
would like that very much. It is super cool. It is the world's leading supplier of firearms,
00:19:46.120
ammunition, firearm accessories. I love them. They offer an industry exclusive guaranteed forever
00:19:50.960
warranty on all parts and accessories. They offer nearly 120,000 items. I've been like a kid in a
00:19:56.580
candy store deciding what I want from new guns and ammo to nearly any gun part imaginable.
00:20:01.720
They have more than 5,500 partner FFL around the country to make your online gun purchase go very
00:20:08.280
smoothly. It's family owned. It's veteran owned doing business in the country's heartland of Iowa
00:20:12.640
for 80 years. They've been supporting law enforcement agencies and charities and military
00:20:17.360
charities also for 80 years. Here's where it gets fun. Throughout the month of November,
00:20:22.760
Brownells is working to help veterans in a big way. Brownells hashtag Operation 100K
00:20:27.960
event is soliciting donations from customers and will match every donor dollar up to 100 grand.
00:20:34.480
Donations will be divided between three well-respected military charities,
00:20:37.200

directly. Visit right now, brownells.com today, pick up some gun gear and help out with a fabulous,
00:21:01.980
great cause. So this is Michael Avenatti's excuse. Apparently, well, we don't know
00:21:07.000
exactly what happened, but according to witnesses, he storms in where the woman is and he says,
00:21:11.500
she hit me first. This is BS. This is effing BS. But just some advice. I know he went to law school.
00:21:17.880
I never went to law school, but a little bit of advice. Don't start justifying the action that you
00:21:24.980
then deny that you did. That's a bad idea. When you start explaining why you hit her and then deny
00:21:31.000
that you hit her, that doesn't look good. Just come and say, I didn't do anything. If you say,
00:21:35.120
she hit me first, it's like little kids. It's actually like little kids. Why'd you hit your
00:21:39.520
brother? He hit me first. You shouldn't have hit him. No, I didn't hit him, but you just said he
00:21:43.780
hit you, of course. Now, of course, Michael Avenatti is already being investigated. He was turned over
00:21:50.900
for criminal investigation by the Senate Judiciary Committee for all of those fake Kavanaugh
00:21:55.360
allegations he came up. Some are saying that his political career is falling apart. I mentioned that
00:22:00.960
earlier. That's the talk. It's on fire. I think this guarantees he's going to be the 2020 nominee.
00:22:07.060
Isn't it? If you're going to be the Democrat nominee for president, don't you basically have
00:22:11.840
to be under criminal investigation at this point? Don't you have to be just a dirty, rotten,
00:22:17.160
crooked criminal? This is really going to help him. Unless Hillary gets in the race again,
00:22:21.880
then it's going to be a head-to-head to see who can be the most disreputable presidential
00:22:27.080
candidate in history. Speaking of people who want to run for the presidency,
00:22:31.380
Michelle Obama is back in action. It's unclear if Michelle Obama wants to be the president or if
00:22:36.160
she wants to be Oprah. Maureen Callahan had a great piece in the New York Post today that said
00:22:41.540
she was either going to become president or a self-help guru. That's what all of this becoming
00:22:46.660
is about. I'm becoming. It's all that kind of pseudo-spiritual Oprah-y stuff. In either case,
00:22:52.960
she's making this book tour go around, and she keeps putting her foot in her mouth. Here's
00:22:58.700
You know, and this is also sort of an interesting thing when people would say that taxpayers are
00:23:03.220
paying for that. And the truth is, yes, you don't pay rent and you don't pay for staff. But
00:23:09.520
everything, every dish, every, they would count the number of peanuts that you'd eat and charge it
00:23:16.080
back. No. So you'd get a bill at the end of it. It's not a, you know, it's not an aw. We live in a
00:23:21.720
White House, y'all. You know, I mean, this is not a complaint. It's just something that people
00:23:27.100
don't understand. Okay. So she's saying she's not complaining, right? She's not complaining about it.
00:23:33.600
But she obviously is. She is. She's, I'm just explaining this to everybody. The reason that
00:23:39.260
people don't know about this is because we've never, ever heard a first lady complain about this
00:23:42.860
before, that the president and the first lady have to pay for their own meals, that they don't just
00:23:48.780
get that for free. This is the first time we've ever heard this. I suppose she's better than Hillary
00:23:54.860
Clinton, though, because the reason that we might be able to infer that the president and the first
00:24:01.080
lady have to pay for certain things is that when the Clintons left the White House, they stole the
00:24:04.680
furniture. They literally packed up furniture on the moving truck and took it with them. They had to
00:24:09.920
give it back because that was theft. You're not allowed to take everything. But the thing that's
00:24:14.080
really, I mean, there was a silly comment from Michelle Obama, but she's selling these tickets
00:24:18.400
for thousands of dollars a seat. So she's got to give a little juice and she's got to give a, okay,
00:24:22.380
fine. That's whatever. When she came on later, she said in this conversation, quote, I'm finally
00:24:29.340
claiming my story is the quintessential American story. Yes, I'm black. Yes, I'm a woman. And yes,
00:24:35.920
I grew up working class and my parents didn't get to go to college or finish college. How dare someone
00:24:41.020
tell me? I don't love my country. The first part of what she said is true. She, I don't know why
00:24:48.440
she's finally claiming it. I wish she had claimed it earlier. It is true. Her story is a quintessential
00:24:53.820
American story. She is a black woman. She grew up working class. Her parents didn't get to finish
00:24:58.880
college and she became the first lady of the United States. She went to law school. She was a lawyer.
00:25:03.660
She became the first lady. It's hard to imagine succeeding at a higher level than that. However,
00:25:08.320
she finishes it. She says, how dare someone tell me I don't love my country? The reason why we've
00:25:14.820
suggested that Michelle Obama doesn't love her country is because she told us herself. Here's
00:25:19.780
Michelle Obama in 2008. I don't think we've seen that, but what we've learned over this year
00:25:28.000
is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something for the
00:25:37.420
first time in my adult lifetime, I'm proud of my country. And not just because the rock has done
00:25:45.400
well, but because I think people are hungry for change. First time in my adult life, I've been proud
00:25:51.820
of my country. She says it. And then she has the audacity to go out and say, how dare you suggest
00:25:57.620
that I don't love my country? We're suggesting it because you say it's this constant gaslighting.
00:26:02.780
It actually reminds me. Do you remember that time that Ben Shapiro was on Piers Morgan and he he's
00:26:09.260
there are debating gun control. And Piers tried to use this tactic to to deflect from something
00:26:13.620
he'd done. He said, how dare you? Here's the clip. What you tend to do is you tend to demonize people
00:26:18.020
who differ from you politically by standing on the graves of the children of Sandy Hook saying they
00:26:22.380
don't seem to care enough about the dead kids. If they cared more about the dead kids, they would
00:26:25.440
agree with you on policy. I think we can have a rational political conversation about balancing
00:26:29.860
rights and risks and rewards of all of these different policies. But I don't think that what
00:26:34.400
we need to do is demonize people on the other side is as being unfeeling about the about what
00:26:39.100
happened in Sandy Hook. How dare you accuse me of standing on the graves of children that die there?
00:26:43.560
How dare you? I've seen you do it repeatedly, Piers. Like I say, how dare you? I mean, you can keep
00:26:48.120
saying that, but you've done it repeatedly. How dare you? How dare you? The election of my husband is the
00:26:53.940
first time in my adult life I've ever been proud of my country. Well, Piers, you said that that's the
00:26:58.120
first time in your adult life. You've been proud of your country. How dare you? How dare you suggest
00:27:01.820
that I said what I said? How dare I saw you say it? This is one of the things that's so frustrating
00:27:07.440
about Michelle Obama. If she would have just apologized, we would have forgiven her. She
00:27:12.140
would have just said, wow, that was a terrible statement. I'm sorry. I, it isn't true. I spoke out
00:27:18.280
of, I don't know. I mean, it's actually a hard statement to explain. It's such a specific statement
00:27:23.560
that she's never been proud of her country. But if she said, you know, I have been consumed in this
00:27:27.880
ideological anger against America. And I realize now I'm one of the luckiest people in the history
00:27:32.620
of the world. And only in this country could that ever happen. And what a terrific country
00:27:36.080
this is. And I'm really, really sorry. I might've meant it when I said it, but I've realized how
00:27:40.820
stupid and awful that statement was. If she had said that, we would have forgiven her, but she hasn't.
00:27:45.380
She's just denying that she ever said it. Absolutely outrageous. We have a lot more to get to that
00:27:49.520
we're not going to because I want to get to mailbag today. So just remember, if right now you are out in
00:27:55.580
Michigan, I'm still in Michigan, come on out to the university of Michigan tonight at 7 PM for the
00:28:00.840
latest stop on my YAF Covfefe on campus tour. It'll be very cold, but those sweet, sweet leftist tears
00:28:06.720
will be fresh and they'll actually be snow. They will be the snowflakes. The leftist tears
00:28:11.920
have become the snowflakes. So don't miss it. If you're on dailywire.com, thank you very much.
00:28:16.700
You keep the lights on. You keep Covfefe that is typically in my tumbler. Now it's in my
00:28:21.420
nondescript water bottle is I left my tumbler back in LA. Don't be a fool like me. Get your
00:28:26.500
tumbler all the time because if you subscribe, you get me, you get the Andrew Clayton show. You get
00:28:30.940
the Ben Shapiro show. It does questions in the mailbag. Who cares? You get the leftist tears
00:28:34.800
tumbler. That's what matters because what's really nice, you can have it hot or cold. So if you catch
00:28:39.280
all those little leftist snowflakes, they'll stay cold. They'll stay really fresh and unique and
00:28:44.020
beautiful. Go to dailywire.com. We've got the mailbag coming up. We'll be right back.
00:28:51.420
We got a lot today. We have a lot to get through from Elliot. Dear professor Covfefe with one of
00:29:04.820
the most pro America and assimilation based immigration administrations we've had in ages.
00:29:09.920
Do you think there is any chance that English will be made the official language of the country
00:29:14.280
rather than just leaving it to the States? I hope so. I sure hope they do. English should and must
00:29:20.920
become the official language of the United States. I have nothing against other languages. I rather
00:29:27.120
like other languages. I speak other languages and I encourage you to learn other languages too.
00:29:32.220
However, the left has brought us to the place where we must have an official language because
00:29:37.200
we have so little that unites us anymore in the country because of the multiculturalism of the left,
00:29:43.360
because the left insists on not assimilating anybody into the American culture and denigrating
00:29:48.220
American culture. We have very little that unites us, including our language. I mean, it's a sort of
00:29:53.820
old stodgy complaint to hear somebody angered by the phrase press one for English, but it is an
00:30:00.720
outrage that I have to press one for English. We are in America. If you had a little thing that said,
00:30:05.920
you know, press one for Spanish, maybe if at the end or hidden, okay, that's fine. Not there are a lot
00:30:11.480
of people in this country who don't speak English, but they should, they should learn it. They should be
00:30:16.080
made to learn it. They should ideally learn it before they get here. But if they don't do that,
00:30:19.840
they should learn it immediately upon getting here. You know, half of my, or half of my family
00:30:23.660
rather came on the Mayflower. The other half came on a sardine boat for all intents and purposes.
00:30:28.080
They came over from Italy and they took great pains to learn English. They refused even to speak
00:30:33.120
Italian in the household because they wanted to become Americans. And people in this country who have
00:30:39.700
come from other places, Central America or South America should behave in exactly the same way.
00:30:43.880
And they shouldn't speak Spanish in the home or they shouldn't speak it very much. They should
00:30:47.520
learn English. This is true of immigrants from East Asia. This is true of immigrants from all over
00:30:53.100
the place. Learn English because if we still had a common culture that united us, we can't even agree
00:30:58.480
on the American flag anymore. We can't even, half the country is protesting the flag at this point.
00:31:03.360
But if we had a common culture, a common entertainment culture, a common religious culture,
00:31:07.540
a common broadly, broad values culture, that would be one thing, but we don't. So we at least need to
00:31:12.680
be united by that. I hope we get it through. I'm skeptical that we will. I don't. I think
00:31:16.820
that's probably a bridge too far. Maybe they'll build the wall first, but I really hope that they
00:31:21.060
do. From Mario. Hi, Michael. Wanted to ask your thoughts and insights regarding the early church
00:31:26.760
and the raging debate then of the nature of Jesus Christ. Eventually, the church decided
00:31:32.120
on the Holy Trinity. However, I also think some of the other ideas are interesting and perhaps
00:31:37.680
equally valid. Can you discuss your views? So what Mario is talking about is that in the early
00:31:43.700
days of Christianity, there were heresies that cropped up rather quickly within a century or two
00:31:48.720
centuries. And they had various perspectives on the nature of God and the nature of Jesus and the
00:31:54.360
nature of the Holy Spirit. They might be interesting ideas. They can't be equally valid. The reason they
00:32:00.660
can't be equally valid is their contradictory ideas. If one idea says that Christ is God and the other
00:32:07.060
idea says that Christ is not God, then they can't be equally valid. He either is God or he is not
00:32:12.740
God. The reason that I believe in the Trinity is because I see it throughout scripture. John 1 says,
00:32:20.280
in the beginning was the word, the logos, Christ, and the word was with God and the word was God. So we
00:32:28.020
know that Christ is God. Christ says that he is God at various points in the scripture. We know that the
00:32:34.220
Holy Spirit is God as well. St. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians, quote, the Spirit teaches everything,
00:32:39.020
even the depths of God. For what person knows a man's thoughts except the Spirit of the man which
00:32:44.600
is in him? So also, no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. So we now know that
00:32:52.900
God is God. God the Father is God. God the Son, Christ is God. And God the Spirit, the Holy Spirit,
00:32:58.620
is God. All three of these are God. Yet in the early church, there was some disagreement about
00:33:04.220
this. There were various heresies. Arianism, that's the heresy of Arius, who very famously got punched
00:33:09.880
in the face by Santa Claus at the Council of Nicaea. Arianism, that heresy, denied the divinity of
00:33:16.740
Christ. There was another very early heresy called Marcionism. Marcionism embraced the God of the New
00:33:22.960
Testament, but detested the God of the Old Testament and rejected the God of the Old Testament as
00:33:28.200
somehow different. There's Albigensianism, which came centuries later. This was a Manichean dualist
00:33:34.300
heresy that despised the material world. There are a lot of heresies, and there are many, many more
00:33:41.120
heresies than that. My main conclusion from all of this, and I advise you to take this under
00:33:46.640
consideration as well, is that the church fathers were extraordinarily smart spiritual people,
00:33:54.240
and they got it right. All of those various councils, the councils that came up with the
00:33:59.940
Nicene Creed, speaking of the Council of Nicaea, or the councils that compiled the Bible,
00:34:06.980
they really got it right. They knew what to put in and what to leave out. These are the smartest men
00:34:12.400
in history, and they weren't bumbling idiots. We, from our modernist perspective, I think look down on
00:34:18.220
them as old people who, you know, wore various robes and didn't have iPhones, so they couldn't
00:34:23.940
have been smart. These were extremely intelligent, wise people, and they got it right, and they've got
00:34:29.420
it right about the Trinity too. From Amber, hello, Mr. Knowles. I was listening to Maxine Waters talking
00:34:34.760
about most likely becoming the head of House Financial Services Committee and proud that she's the first
00:34:39.780
black woman to do so. If the left states that gender is fluid, a choice, then why all of the
00:34:46.380
celebrating of the first openly LGBTQ plus woman in Congress, the first Muslim woman in Congress,
00:34:51.940
the youngest female in Congress, etc. You make an excellent point. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
00:34:58.760
This is why transgenderism and identity politics more broadly has destroyed feminism, because you can
00:35:05.980
have transgenderism or you can have feminism, but you can't have both. Either gender and sex is innate,
00:35:13.740
it's essential, it defines our identity, you can metaphysically be one while not physically being
00:35:20.300
the other. It's so important that you will mutilate yourself to more closely resemble the other gender,
00:35:27.820
or everything's the same, or everything's exactly the same and gender doesn't matter at all.
00:35:33.640
Either it matters intensely, and in that case, either it's natural, it can't be changed, or it can be
00:35:38.800
changed, it doesn't matter at all. It's not natural. These ideologies eat each other up, which is why
00:35:44.160
it's pretty funny. I think if I am ever elected to Congress, I'm going to identify as the first black
00:35:51.440
gay Muslim leader of the Financial Services Committee. In fact, I might even identify that way
00:35:58.900
now, because why not? Why am I not? Who are you to tell me? Who the heck are you to tell me that I'm not
00:36:06.660
the head of the House Financial Services Committee? Check your privilege, okay? Amber?
00:36:11.800
All right. From Aaron. Michael, how can I get a liberal girl talking about her values in a
00:36:17.920
non-politically charged way? It's been my experience that when people don't know they are talking about
00:36:23.620
politics, they proclaim different values than they would if they were addressing a specific issue,
00:36:28.140
believing in individual rights, for instance. Thanks a lot. That's a very good point. People very often do not
00:36:35.520
preach what they, in fact, practice. The first thing you've got to do is charm her. This is good
00:36:41.300
advice generally when talking to women. You know, be attractive. Be charming. Don't come at it like
00:36:47.060
you're going to have a political debate or something. You want to hear from her. You want to get her
00:36:51.000
ideas. You want and kind of maybe hit her from, don't literally, don't be Michael Avenatti. Don't
00:36:56.380
literally hit her, but hit her rhetorically from different angles where she might not be as familiar.
00:37:00.940
And ask simple but pointed questions. I actually think specificity here is pretty helpful. You
00:37:07.600
could talk, don't talk about something that is, you know, so in the news. Donald Trump is tweeting
00:37:14.040
about it, for instance. But you could ask pretty pointed questions about, I don't know, you see a
00:37:19.440
cute little baby on a stroller. Say, wow, gosh, isn't that baby so cute? Oh my God, look at that cute
00:37:25.320
little baby. Oh my goodness gracious. How, oh my, he's only two months old. Wow. Oh my, just think
00:37:30.920
two and a half months ago, he was inside you. Wow. Look at that. Look at, and you could, and you
00:37:35.520
could murder it. I mean, don't end it on that, but point in the direction of the logical conclusions
00:37:41.680
and the logical extremes of arguments. And if you do it in a way that is conversational, not combative,
00:37:47.860
not debating, then it might just start turning some gears in the old noggin. And you don't even need to
00:37:53.600
harp on it. You don't need to resolve an issue there. Just plant the seeds. This is true, by the
00:37:57.720
way, not just of talking to girls, but it's true of talking to people generally. And ultimately over
00:38:01.880
time, people might come to that conclusion. It's very hard to convince somebody that he's wrong.
00:38:07.460
It's very hard to leave a discussion or a debate when someone will actually say, okay, well, at the
00:38:11.440
end of that debate, I'm wrong and you're right. Happens, sometimes happens, but not always. What it
00:38:16.400
usually happens is they'll leave. They'll say, I got to think about that. And then six months later,
00:38:20.720
they'll pass off your opinion as their own, which is fine. At least they got to the right opinion
00:38:24.980
from Matthew. Yo, Mikey, yo, Maddie, what's up? What do you think of a maximum wage and or maximum
00:38:33.220
capital and property ownership? I have a sibling who keeps proposing that billionaires shouldn't
00:38:38.740
legally be allowed to exist. Terrible idea. What do you think? I love billionaires. I love billionaires.
00:38:45.720
I've known a handful of billionaires just through my meanderings in politics. They're
00:38:50.920
wonderful. Billionaires have always been very good to me. I've never gotten a job from a poor
00:38:54.800
person. I got to tell you, billionaires have been a lot better to me professionally than
00:39:00.220
poor people have. Nothing against poor people. They've just never given me a job. Have they
00:39:03.800
ever given you a job? Have they ever given your brother a job? I don't think so. Why doesn't
00:39:07.400
he like billionaires? They employ you. They don't take money away from you. They just make more
00:39:15.040
money on their own. Productive work doesn't take money away from someone else. It increases
00:39:20.220
the total wealth of the world. So they made their money. That's fine. Why are you so angry at them?
00:39:26.840
They're giving you jobs. They donate a lot to charity. They seem to do good work. It's because
00:39:31.920
socialism is just an ideology of envy. Winston Churchill said, quote,
00:39:36.840
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. Its inherent
00:39:42.080
virtue is the equal sharing of misery. If you're looking at those billionaires and you're all angry,
00:39:46.400
maybe you should look at yourself and think, how can I become a billionaire? Maybe I'd like to be
00:39:49.800
a billionaire too, or at least a hundred millionaire. You know, at least, you know,
00:39:53.280
shoot for the stars. You'll land on the moon. What is that expression? I don't know. That never made a
00:39:56.920
lot of sense anyway, but that's what you got to look at. Look at the envy. Envy is not a very good
00:40:02.380
quality. From Samantha, Mr. Knowles, this is the question we've all been waiting for. What is your
00:40:08.760
favorite flavor of ice cream? I don't really care for ice cream. I know that's the least popular
00:40:14.500
thing I've ever said. I don't care for it. I never reach for it. It doesn't do a lot for me. I have
00:40:19.260
sensitive teeth. I've got to watch my waistline. No, thank you. The one that I can't resist is a
00:40:24.480
chocolate malted milkshake. That is actually my favorite dessert. That is the one that I will always
00:40:29.800
go for. But ice cream out of a container? No, thank you. If I have to, coffee is fine, but it doesn't do a lot
00:40:36.520
for me. From Nicholas, to the Catholic cigar smoker of the Daily Wire. I like cigars. You offer me ice
00:40:43.160
cream or a cigar. I'll go for the cigar. To the Catholic cigar smoker of the Daily Wire, as a cigar
00:40:48.380
and pipe smoker, I would like to know what you were smoking in the election special. Also, why do
00:40:52.920
conservatives smoke cigars and pipes significantly more than anyone else? For a third question, have you
00:40:58.500
considered pipe smoking? An excellent question. This was a little Easter egg in the election special.
00:41:05.280
I was smoking a cigar. I won't say the specific brand name of the cigar, but it was a cigar that
00:41:12.340
was made exclusively for Canada. And the reason I did that is because I'm still waiting for Lena
00:41:19.280
Dunham and all of the left-wingers from the last election who promised that they were going to move
00:41:23.260
to Canada to move to Canada. And they haven't done it, so I smoked a cigar made exclusively for Canada
00:41:29.180
just to celebrate. And you're the first person to ask. Maybe we'll all go to Canada and get more
00:41:34.420
because these kind of cigars can basically only be bought when you go up to Canada.
00:41:38.260
You know what I'm talking about? A little contraband from south of the border.
00:41:40.980
Okay, from Jacob. We've got time for probably one or two more.
00:41:44.560
Howdy, Michael. What advice do you have for us libertarians that are seeing that the Republicans
00:41:49.840
held control of the presidency, Senate, and House of Representatives for a full two years,
00:41:55.140
but still have not reformed welfare, balanced the budget, eliminated any governmental departments,
00:42:00.340
or repealed Obamacare. Sincerely, Jake. Great point. It's really frustrating. I've been advocating
00:42:08.940
for entitlement reform for a very long time. I think that's a very important issue. Only way to
00:42:13.400
get our debt and deficits under control. And yet it hasn't happened. I'll point out that Ronald
00:42:17.460
Reagan never shrinked the size of the government. He didn't shrink the budget. We hoped he would. It
00:42:21.500
was the real one failure of the Reagan administration. President Trump does not appear to be interested in
00:42:27.600
shrinking the size of the federal budget. Maybe shrinking the rate of growth. That would be nice.
00:42:32.440
He's cut down the budgets of cabinet departments. That's a great start. He's deregulated significantly.
00:42:37.800
He's reduced the size of various aspects of the federal government. But has this reduced overall
00:42:43.580
spending? No, absolutely not. It's probably not going to happen. I hope that we can get some kind of
00:42:47.980
entitlement reform through. Now that we've lost the House, I think you can kiss that goodbye.
00:42:52.860
This is too bad. Libertarians have a strange relationship to this administration because
00:42:59.840
Trump is speaking in some ways like a populist and a protectionist, all things that libertarians
00:43:05.560
tend to oppose. And yet he's stated that his ultimate goal is the elimination of tariffs.
00:43:10.840
It's the elimination of barriers to trade, which libertarians should like. Libertarians are going to
00:43:14.720
get a lot out of this administration, but it's not a libertarian administration. It will not be a
00:43:19.760
libertarian administration. And even administrations that seemed more favorably inclined to that way,
00:43:25.660
like Reagan's, also didn't fulfill that promise. Might just unfortunately be a pipe dream in a
00:43:31.340
modern democracy. But we can keep on hoping. One more. I don't care if I don't have time. I'm doing
00:43:35.500
one more. Michael, I am applying to medical school and trying to keep very high grades, but I cannot stand
00:43:42.600
listening to my professor pass off her opinions as facts in a general education class. She claims that
00:43:48.540
Trump abides by the same nationalism as Hitler and that patriotism is the opposite of nationalism.
00:43:55.380
How do I approach the debate without jeopardizing my grade? Thanks. Love the show.
00:44:00.600
You want my honest answer? This doesn't sound great. Keep your mouth shut. That's the answer.
00:44:07.440
I don't know. What are you, what do you want out of this? All I know from your question is that you
00:44:13.000
really want to go to medical school. If you really want to go to medical school and you think that this
00:44:17.620
woman is going to hurt your grades and prevent you in some way from going to medical school,
00:44:24.300
then just keep your mouth shut. What is to be gained by opening your mouth? You might be able
00:44:28.420
to change the minds of some of your classmates, but you could do that outside of class too. You can
00:44:33.540
just talk to them, be on the debate club, whatever, do conservative activism. Are you going to change
00:44:38.180
the professor's mind? Sounds like she's a little far gone for that, so I don't know that that's likely.
00:44:42.720
And if you want to change your mind, you could do it after you're out of her class and she can't
00:44:46.280
affect your grades. I have never hid my views, or rarely. I suppose a couple movies and plays that
00:44:56.920
I've been in, I've been very quiet. And sometimes, tactically, you have to be quiet. I've never hid
00:45:03.060
my views. When someone asks me, I've never lied about them. And I don't think you should lie about
00:45:06.960
your views either. But you don't need to go around parading them all the time if it's going to
00:45:11.800
seriously hinder your life. You've got to be innocent as a dove and wise as a serpent.
00:45:17.560
And you should maintain that. You've got to be a little bit the lion and a little bit the fox,
00:45:21.440
to use Machiavelli's phrase. You've got to be, I don't know any other animals that we can use.
00:45:26.160
I don't, you need to be a pelican and a swan. I don't think that means anything. But you've got to
00:45:29.800
have a little forbizia. You know, you've got to have a little awareness and astuteness when you go
00:45:34.620
about these things, because it's a real minefield. If you want to go out there and be
00:45:38.040
totally blunt about your views, go for it. I've frequently done that in my life.
00:45:43.060
But it will cost you. If you're willing to bear that cost, go for it. But if not,
00:45:47.140
maybe be a little astute and live to fight another day. Okay, that's our show.
00:45:50.540
If you're at the University of Michigan, come on by tonight. I can't wait to see you.
00:45:54.620
If not, I'm sure you can catch it on the internet at some point. I'm sure we'll have it up there
00:45:58.080
someday. In the meantime, have a good weekend. I'm Michael Knowles. This is The Michael
