00:00:37.660 Hey everybody, Michael Knowles here, host of The Michael Knowles Show.
00:00:41.280 One thing I know a lot of people like to do at Christmas is take a look back.
00:00:45.220 You know, go back and look at old scrapbooks and photographs and family movies.
00:00:50.260 So we're going to do the same thing.
00:00:51.580 We're going to go all the way back to episode 71 of this show years ago.
00:00:56.980 To the war on Christmas, a history.
00:01:00.420 I know a lot of conservatives even deny that the war on Christmas exists.
00:01:03.640 All the leftists deny that the war on Christmas exists, but it does.
00:01:08.380 So for your delight, for your edification, for the cause of fighting the war on Christmas
00:01:17.220 and defending the Christmas side of that, in which I consider myself a three-star general,
00:01:22.320 please enjoy this classic episode and Merry Christmas to everybody.
00:01:25.640 Today, I assume the role of candy cane-chomping Douglas MacArthur in the war on Christmas.
00:01:31.900 Does it exist?
00:01:33.060 Are we winning?
00:01:34.000 I will explain why the war on Christmas really matters, and I will be wearing this helmet
00:01:38.640 the whole time in case any lefties try to break in and attack me with euphemistic language.
00:01:43.300 Plus, the mailbag.
00:01:44.600 I'm Michael Knowles, and this is The Michael Knowles Show.
00:01:46.460 Is there a war on Christmas?
00:01:56.340 Of course there's a war on Christmas.
00:01:58.240 Stop trying to be a cool guy and get the New York Times to like you by pretending there isn't.
00:02:02.440 There obviously is.
00:02:03.560 It's now fashionable in some conservative circles, where people care what the New York Times thinks,
00:02:08.220 to say that the war on Christmas is some crazy illusion of conservatives.
00:02:12.380 And I'm, you know, I'm not that kind of conservative.
00:02:14.180 No, no.
00:02:14.680 I'm educated and fancy, and I think, wait, wait, don't tell me is clever.
00:02:18.720 I'm not one of those middle state rubes who pays attention to the degraded culture belched out every year
00:02:24.520 by our sophisticated bettors on the coasts.
00:02:26.900 Stop it.
00:02:27.800 Stop it.
00:02:28.440 You're embarrassing yourself.
00:02:29.700 Of course there is a war on Christmas.
00:02:31.540 To begin, here's the first bit of evidence.
00:02:33.440 Barack Obama struck the word Christmas from the White House Christmas card.
00:02:36.840 A quick look back through history shows this is not the norm.
00:02:40.620 Calvin Coolidge wrote in his 1927 White House Christmas card,
00:02:44.480 The real spirit of Christmas, if we think on these things, there will be born in us a savior,
00:02:49.900 and over us will shine a star, sending its gleam of hope to the world.
00:02:54.380 FDR wrote some variation of Merry Christmas from the President and Mrs. Roosevelt,
00:02:58.580 each of the 150 years he reigned in the White House.
00:03:00.860 Harry Truman wrote, quote,
00:03:02.760 As 1950 ebbs to its close, our hearts turn once more to Bethlehem and to the coming of
00:03:09.120 a little child, the divine infant that brought love to a weary world.
00:03:13.700 Six paragraphs later, six paragraphs later, he concluded, quote,
00:03:17.460 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace and goodwill toward men.
00:03:22.560 Eisenhower wrote a curt, typical season's greetings for Christmas and New Year.
00:03:27.880 JFK, Happy Christmas.
00:03:29.460 The pieces of LBJ's card available still don't show the wording,
00:03:33.000 but given his preference for four-letter epithets, that's probably for the best.
00:03:36.840 Language on the other cards is hard to track down as well until we get to George W. Bush,
00:03:40.840 who included verses from Psalms on the Christmas card.
00:03:44.500 Then we get to Barack Obama, who not only struck mention of Christmas entirely,
00:03:48.500 but according to his own White House social secretary, tried to ban the creche,
00:03:53.500 the nativity scene, from the East Room of the White House.
00:03:56.920 Now, why would you do that, you ask?
00:03:58.800 Why would he want to do that?
00:04:00.300 Because they wanted to make Christmas more, quote, inclusive.
00:04:04.220 That's the line offered, by the way.
00:04:05.600 That's how you know that there is a war on Christmas.
00:04:08.340 School districts will replace Merry Christmas and Happy New Year with the vague
00:04:11.700 Happy Holidays, retail outlets, work environments.
00:04:14.980 Christmas parties have become vague holiday parties.
00:04:17.360 In many circles, particularly in the cultural centers of the country,
00:04:22.380 to say Merry Christmas has become a political act that expresses to the retail worker
00:04:27.160 or the acquaintance your political and politically incorrect point of view.
00:04:31.960 And if you harp on this long enough, as I do, as I do every year,
00:04:35.380 you will inevitably get the same reply.
00:04:37.780 Well, yeah, but why shouldn't the greeting be more inclusive?
00:04:41.840 You know, not everybody celebrates Christmas, you know,
00:04:44.360 and that's the moving of the goalposts.
00:04:46.480 First, there wasn't a war on Christmas.
00:04:48.100 Now, there is, but it doesn't matter.
00:04:49.960 That's how you know.
00:04:50.900 The other trick that those who deny the cultural movement will say is that it isn't a war.
00:04:55.900 The language, it's hyperbolic.
00:04:57.340 It's ridiculous.
00:04:58.080 There isn't a war.
00:04:59.060 You don't say.
00:04:59.800 There isn't.
00:05:00.160 There aren't guns.
00:05:01.020 That's true.
00:05:01.500 There aren't tanks and bullets.
00:05:03.240 Christmas is not literally being cut down by machine gun fire.
00:05:07.160 That's because the war on Christmas is a figure of speech,
00:05:10.160 much like the war on poverty, say.
00:05:11.780 Poverty is not being cut down by bullets because, like Christmas, it isn't material.
00:05:17.100 What is meant by the, quote, war on Christmas is a battle of language and culture.
00:05:21.160 There is a belligerent group of left-wing cultural warriors which seeks to replace clear,
00:05:25.900 traditional, precise language, Christmas, with vague, meaningless euphemisms like happy holidays
00:05:32.500 and season's greetings.
00:05:34.600 Of course, both phrases have been around for a long time.
00:05:36.900 But whereas in the past they referred specifically to Christmas and New Year's,
00:05:40.740 like Eisenhower's Christmas card, season's greetings for Christmas and New Year,
00:05:44.620 now they serve as a replacement for the politically correct term,
00:05:48.240 what the modern mind considers the grave offense of Christmastime, Merry Christmas.
00:05:53.760 But aren't there other major holidays during Christmastime beside Christmas and New Year's?
00:05:57.980 This is usually what they ask.
00:05:59.120 Not really.
00:06:00.200 There are holidays, to be sure, but no major ones.
00:06:02.680 The closest contender we have is Hanukkah, which is the Jewish festival of lights.
00:06:06.900 But while Hanukkah is indeed an ancient holiday, it dates back about 2,000 years,
00:06:11.900 it is a relatively minor holiday.
00:06:13.860 Major Jewish holidays are biblical.
00:06:15.740 They feature restrictions on work.
00:06:17.540 Because Hanukkah is non-biblical, there are few religious restrictions on work.
00:06:21.720 According to historian Diane Ashton, Hanukkah rose to prominence in America as it did,
00:06:27.240 not in the rest of the world, because of two Reform rabbis in 19th century Cincinnati
00:06:31.600 who worried their children had little connection to the synagogue.
00:06:34.780 Before that, there is little record of Hanukkah celebrations.
00:06:38.580 The rabbis modeled the celebration in gift-giving after Christmas.
00:06:41.940 As Ashton explains, quote,
00:06:43.720 They didn't see Christmas as something they could do easily because it's Christian,
00:06:47.160 but they did want to do something like that because it was American.
00:06:50.460 So kosher restaurants even started serving turkey dinners after the American custom.
00:06:55.140 That's Hanukkah.
00:06:55.780 The far less credible pretender is Kwanzaa, which is a socialist contrivance invented by
00:07:00.660 a criminal L.A. City College Africana Studies professor named Malana Karenga in 1966.
00:07:07.200 He created Kwanzaa to be a holiday specifically for black Americans,
00:07:10.880 even though black Americans already celebrated Christmas.
00:07:12.920 Ironically, while virtually all African slaves were brought to America from the west coast
00:07:18.200 of Africa, Kwanzaa is a Swahili word meaning first fruits that originated in East Africa,
00:07:23.520 which means none of the slaves brought to America would have understood it.
00:07:26.760 Now, one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa is communism,
00:07:29.820 Ujamaa cooperative economics,
00:07:32.280 and Malana Karenga himself was sentenced to prison in 1971
00:07:36.400 for felonious assault and false imprisonment after he sexually assaulted and tortured multiple women.
00:07:42.200 As the L.A. Times reported, he ordered them to strip naked,
00:07:44.820 whipped them with an electrical cord, and beat them with a karate baton.
00:07:48.460 Karenga then placed a hot soldering iron in one woman's mouth and against her face
00:07:52.640 and tightened her big toe in a vice.
00:07:54.740 He finally put detergent and running hoses in their mouths
00:07:57.220 and hit them on the head with toasters.
00:07:59.300 As the black power movement of the 1970s has waned,
00:08:02.480 so too has the celebration of the holiday.
00:08:04.280 On the high end of estimates, 0.3% of Americans acknowledge the supposed holiday.
00:08:10.300 That rate continues to decline.
00:08:12.820 So why pretend Christmastime does not center around Christmas?
00:08:16.020 Why pretend there are so many other major holidays on equal footing?
00:08:20.180 There's New Year on January 1st,
00:08:22.520 and we've long said good tiding for Christmas and a happy new year.
00:08:26.460 There's Hanukkah, a relatively minor holiday.
00:08:29.060 But by the way, we don't say happy holidays instead of happy Labor Day,
00:08:32.720 even though Rosh Hashanah, which is a far more important Jewish holiday than Hanukkah,
00:08:36.840 sometimes occurs around the same time.
00:08:38.520 You don't say that.
00:08:39.240 We don't say happy holidays or season's greetings instead of happy Columbus Day,
00:08:44.180 even though Yom Kippur, another much more important Jewish holiday,
00:08:47.520 sometimes occurs around that time.
00:08:49.320 Well, actually, now we don't say happy Columbus Day either.
00:08:51.500 We say blessed Indigenous Peoples Day or something like that.
00:08:54.100 That's another story.
00:08:55.260 There's Kwanzaa, a virtually non-existent holiday.
00:08:57.740 What else is there?
00:08:58.320 There's Boxing Day, which no one in the United States celebrates.
00:09:01.000 There's the winter solstice, which people pretend is a thing, but nobody celebrates.
00:09:05.660 And of course, it isn't about the celebrants of Hanukkah or Kwanzaa
00:09:09.920 or the winter solstice who are waging the war on Christmas.
00:09:13.200 It's the atheist left who constantly seeks to replace clear,
00:09:17.340 vivid language with bizarre, secular euphemisms.
00:09:21.280 This is the essence of political correctness.
00:09:23.720 The essence of political correctness is to replace clear language
00:09:26.480 with euphemisms to remove the strength of that language.
00:09:29.580 So we have abortion.
00:09:30.920 Abortion isn't the killing of babies in the womb.
00:09:33.480 It's women's reproductive health.
00:09:36.100 Assisted suicide isn't killing the old and the sick.
00:09:39.140 It's euthanasia.
00:09:40.460 Euthanasia is a word that literally means good death.
00:09:43.460 The good day, you know, it's good.
00:09:44.440 It's nice.
00:09:45.220 So it's no surprise that as political correctness reached peak potency
00:09:48.520 in the late 1990s and early 2000s, we see the war on Christmas.
00:09:53.140 Denver banned religious floats from its Christmas parade.
00:09:56.140 New York mayor Mike Bloomberg displayed the city's holiday tree.
00:09:59.920 Major department stores like Macy's removed references to Christmas.
00:10:03.320 Public schools began removing Christian symbols from Christmastime display
00:10:06.840 all around this time.
00:10:08.780 How coincidental.
00:10:10.040 Now, the left alternately denies that the war on Christmas exists,
00:10:13.200 and then when they can't deny it any longer, they say it doesn't matter.
00:10:16.260 Who cares?
00:10:17.120 Who cares?
00:10:18.060 It's just language.
00:10:19.120 You're just arguing over semantics.
00:10:21.200 Sure.
00:10:21.420 But semantics means meaning.
00:10:23.920 If the language doesn't matter, then why are the war on Christmas belligerents
00:10:27.100 so insistent on changing the traditional, clear, and precise language?
00:10:32.180 If it doesn't matter, then great.
00:10:33.820 Great.
00:10:34.180 That's perfect.
00:10:35.420 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
00:10:37.880 Forget about happy holidays.
00:10:39.200 But of course language matters.
00:10:40.720 Of course.
00:10:41.540 Those who insist on the bizarre, vague euphemisms, they know precisely that.
00:10:45.380 Because politics sits downstream of culture.
00:10:48.660 You know who else knows that is President Trump.
00:10:50.200 Here he is on the campaign trail.
00:10:52.840 You know, we're getting near that beautiful Christmas season that people don't talk about
00:10:57.300 anymore.
00:10:58.620 They don't use the word Christmas because it's not politically correct.
00:11:02.940 You go department stores and they'll say Happy New Year and they'll say other things
00:11:07.400 and it'll be red.
00:11:08.760 They'll have it painted, but they don't say, well, guess what?
00:11:11.820 We're saying Merry Christmas again.
00:11:16.660 This was a great promise.
00:11:18.060 People didn't really take it seriously because they don't take these language issues seriously.
00:11:22.080 But here is President Trump as president.
00:11:25.380 The Christmas story begins 2,000 years ago with a mother, a father, their baby son, and
00:11:32.040 the most extraordinary gift of all, the gift of God's love for all of humanity.
00:11:38.020 Whatever our beliefs, we know that the birth of Jesus Christ and the story of this incredible
00:11:43.980 life forever changed the course of human history.
00:11:48.060 Each and every year at Christmastime, we recognize that the real spirit of Christmas is not what
00:11:55.700 we have.
00:11:56.980 It's about who we are.
00:11:58.900 Each one of us is a child of God.
00:12:02.980 That is the true source of joy this time of the year.
00:12:06.800 That is what makes every Christmas merry.
00:12:11.820 And now as the President of the United States, it's my tremendous honor to finally wish America
00:12:17.580 and the world a very merry Christmas.
00:12:21.880 There's nothing like just sitting here with a little candy cane pipe and watching that.
00:12:29.500 That is pretty good.
00:12:31.160 And there's good news.
00:12:32.200 The great news in the war on Christmas is that clear language and tradition are finally
00:12:36.500 winning after a decade or a decade and a half.
00:12:39.040 According to a 2005 Gallup poll, 41% of respondents deferred to Happy Holidays over Merry Christmas.
00:12:46.040 Ten years later, a similar survey, albeit through a different research center, found that number
00:12:50.920 had dropped to just 25%.
00:12:52.840 Now, the last two years have brought a cultural exuberance to the right, and it's given us
00:12:57.420 myriad early Christmas presents.
00:12:59.480 We've got tax reform, originalist judges, responsible foreign policy, massive deregulation,
00:13:04.940 Obamacare mandate repeal.
00:13:06.680 The list goes on and on.
00:13:09.060 Now, all of this has been possible because of a cultural shift in the country away from insidious
00:13:13.720 euphemisms and political correctness, the pinnacle of insidious euphemisms.
00:13:19.580 Now is not the time to retreat or seek the approval of the New York Times.
00:13:23.180 David McCullough observed that to write well is to think clearly, and that's why it's so hard.
00:13:28.040 Don't give in to fashionably muddled thinking, especially around the incarnation of the divine
00:13:33.140 logic himself.
00:13:34.620 I'm going to put down my candy cane pipe, and we're going to get into the mailbag.
00:13:38.960 First question from David.
00:13:40.800 Hi, Michael.
00:13:41.540 Well, first, I'd like to point out I'm a big fan of your show.
00:13:44.020 Thanks.
00:13:44.740 You had made an argument for venerating Mary.
00:13:47.400 I understand having great respect to Mary as the woman chosen by God to bear Jesus in
00:13:52.560 human form, but I'm curious as to how does praying to Mary not conflict with the first
00:13:57.280 two commandments?
00:13:58.760 I myself am a Christian and base my faith on scripture and use scripture as the basis to
00:14:03.520 evaluate practices, ideologies, et cetera.
00:14:05.800 Thanks, David.
00:14:06.420 A good time of year to be asking that question.
00:14:09.000 You know, I think a lot of this boils down to this question that some Protestants ask,
00:14:14.760 which is, why would you pray to anybody?
00:14:16.900 Why not just pray directly to Jesus?
00:14:19.380 Why would you pray to saints?
00:14:21.220 Or why would you have people on earth pray to you?
00:14:23.560 In Revelation chapter five, here's a verse.
00:14:28.160 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before
00:14:32.160 the lamb.
00:14:33.020 Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers
00:14:38.220 of God's people.
00:14:39.960 So we have the saints offering prayers to God in heaven.
00:14:43.720 They're offering prayers for what?
00:14:45.280 They're not offering prayers for themselves.
00:14:46.660 They're in heaven.
00:14:47.380 They're offering prayers for other people.
00:14:49.420 So as early as the first century of the Christian tradition, we see people asking for intercession,
00:14:56.180 praying for intercession.
00:14:57.780 And we have the city of God, the saints who are in heaven, praying for those of us who
00:15:02.120 aren't there yet or who need their prayers.
00:15:05.400 We have 1 Timothy from Paul, which is pseudepigraphal, but it might tell you something.
00:15:10.800 Certainly we still read 1 Timothy.
00:15:12.500 Quote,
00:15:12.740 First of all, then I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be
00:15:18.020 made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet
00:15:23.060 and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way.
00:15:26.340 This is good and pleasing to God, our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come
00:15:30.800 to the knowledge of the truth.
00:15:32.420 Now, Paul asks others to pray for him all the time.
00:15:35.640 And Romans and Ephesians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians.
00:15:40.100 And he prayed for others.
00:15:41.660 We see that in 2 Thessalonians.
00:15:43.240 Christ himself tells us to pray for others.
00:15:45.780 He says, quote,
00:15:46.380 Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
00:15:49.480 Why wouldn't he tell them, I'll just have them pray to me directly.
00:15:52.100 No, he says you have to pray for others.
00:15:53.800 Pray to whom?
00:15:54.280 Pray to him.
00:15:55.200 Jesus regularly supplies for one person based on the faith of another person.
00:16:00.120 So in Matthew, we see Christ says,
00:16:02.260 Oh woman, great is your faith.
00:16:04.360 Be it done for you as you desire and her daughter is healed.
00:16:07.240 So it's not the daughter praying.
00:16:08.560 It's someone interceding for the daughter and praying.
00:16:10.640 And based on the woman's faith, the daughter is healed.
00:16:14.220 We don't hear about the daughter's faith.
00:16:15.600 We only hear about the mother's faith.
00:16:17.200 Matthew, another in Matthew.
00:16:18.840 Lord, have mercy on my son for he has seizures and he suffers terribly.
00:16:22.320 In Mark, teacher, I brought my son to you that he has a spirit that makes him mute.
00:16:26.300 In Luke, do not fear, only believe.
00:16:28.400 And she, your daughter, will be well.
00:16:30.800 So one thing we also know from James is that the prayers of the righteous work especially well.
00:16:36.860 So James says the prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects.
00:16:41.840 We know that Mary is quite righteous.
00:16:44.000 There's the immaculate conception.
00:16:45.540 She was selected to be the ark of the new covenant, to give birth to the incarnation, to our risen Lord.
00:16:53.280 Seems to me she would be a good person to pray for you as well.
00:16:57.420 I think that's a lot of words.
00:16:59.120 I think probably you could answer that question by saying she's the mother of Jesus.
00:17:02.520 She's the mother of God.
00:17:03.940 But I hope that clears it up a little bit because very often I think people say,
00:17:08.080 well, I don't think we should do these rituals or these traditions or have this liturgy because it's not in Scripture.
00:17:13.580 But actually, it is in Scripture.
00:17:15.040 It does come from Scripture.
00:17:15.960 The liturgy comes from Scripture.
00:17:17.640 And you just have to read a little more broadly or more closely to see exactly how that fits in.
00:17:24.500 It's not always clear to people who aren't in the tradition itself.
00:17:27.720 Next question from Bridget.
00:17:29.280 Hey, Michael.
00:17:30.380 So I've made a bit of a political come around in 2016 due to all the election craziness.
00:17:34.780 I was pretty far to the left in most ways and still am on a lot of economical issues.
00:17:39.020 But I've recently become more devout in my Catholic faith and have changed my position from pro-choice to pro-life.
00:17:45.220 I'm afraid to tell my pro-choice friends and family because I'm afraid they'll ostracize me.
00:17:49.360 And I was wondering if you have any advice.
00:17:50.960 I do.
00:17:52.120 This is hard.
00:17:52.740 This is a hard thing to happen to me.
00:17:54.520 I was pro-choice back when I was – I wasn't really left-wing, but I was pro-choice.
00:17:59.780 I'm from New York.
00:18:00.800 New York Republicans are just not terribly conservative.
00:18:04.180 As I got more conservative, it was clear to me that abortion isn't good and we shouldn't have it be a legal thing.
00:18:12.280 Diana Schaub, who's a bioethicist, convinced me of this over a lunch.
00:18:15.800 And when it happened, I didn't know how to tell my friends.
00:18:18.020 The way you have to do it is two things, unapologetically and patiently.
00:18:23.320 Don't apologize.
00:18:24.240 The left sees pro-life as anti-woman.
00:18:26.960 They really earnestly believe that.
00:18:28.440 It's not just some joke.
00:18:29.980 And so you have to be unapologetic.
00:18:32.520 You have nothing to apologize for.
00:18:34.460 But you also have to be patient with them.
00:18:38.900 They're not going to understand.
00:18:40.380 Be calm.
00:18:41.260 Usually the first person to get angry and start screaming in an argument is the one who doesn't understand really what you're arguing over.
00:18:47.520 So be patient.
00:18:48.380 Be calm about it.
00:18:49.800 And Louis C.K. had a good bit on this.
00:18:52.400 Louis C.K., the now disgraced comedian, but he had a good bit.
00:18:55.060 He said, you know, abortion, I don't think it's a big deal.
00:18:57.920 It's like going to the bathroom.
00:18:59.000 It's just going to the bathroom.
00:19:00.040 It's not a big deal or it's killing a baby.
00:19:03.480 It's either completely meaningless like excretion or it's murdering a baby.
00:19:08.820 And I think you have to explain those premises because if you explain those premises and it's perfectly logical and compassionate from there and then you just debate the premise.
00:19:17.980 Is this baby in the womb?
00:19:20.300 Is it living?
00:19:22.460 Yes.
00:19:23.100 Is it human?
00:19:24.140 Yeah.
00:19:24.380 It's not a dog.
00:19:25.020 It's not a giraffe.
00:19:25.720 It's human.
00:19:26.460 So is it independent or is it part of the mother?
00:19:28.640 It's independent.
00:19:29.160 It has its own genome.
00:19:30.360 It will develop into its own personality.
00:19:32.960 It has a beating heart within not very many days.
00:19:35.560 It's obviously independent or separate rather.
00:19:39.200 It's obviously dependent for food on its mother.
00:19:42.160 And so if all of those things are true, then the question is, are you willing to risk what is the moral equivalent of murder?
00:19:50.000 Because on the premise that it doesn't yet have human dignity when you're going to abort it, if you put it in those terms, I think you might not bring them totally to understand.
00:19:59.140 But they'll begin to understand the premise.
00:20:01.740 That's it for now.
00:20:02.800 The Daily Wire hopes you're having a terrific Christmas holiday.
00:20:07.040 We will be back January 4th with new episodes of The Michael Knowles Show.
