Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the podcast of Lotus Eaters for the 24th of January, 2025.
00:00:06.340
It is a Friday, the best day of the week, by Josh and Stelios, and today we're going to be talking about some grim subjects,
00:00:14.380
then some less grim, well, no, even more grim subjects, well, just as grim subjects, and then some good news.
00:00:19.440
We're talking about the sentencing of Axel Rudabakana, I can't pronounce his name, the land grab in South Africa,
00:00:26.600
and so it's not all bad news. So, where do we start then, Stelios?
00:00:34.520
Right, so yesterday we had the trial of Axel Rudabakana, who is the Southport murderer.
00:00:40.900
This is one of the worst crimes of the last years, I think it's just a...
00:00:46.220
Well, to be honest with you, there are times that the Manchester Arena bombing was just horrific, absolutely horrific.
00:00:52.440
The London Bridge attack was terrible, so there have been a lot, really.
00:00:56.600
This is, again, just another awful, awful thing.
00:01:00.580
I think it's particularly upsetting to people because it's specifically targeting little girls,
00:01:06.360
and you can't think of anyone more undeserving or more innocent, really.
00:01:11.520
Yeah, so the Southport murders took place on the, I think, the 29th of July,
00:01:16.760
about a week or 9, 8, 10 days before he turned 18 years old,
00:01:24.660
and this is incredibly important for the sentencing,
00:01:27.540
because he essentially is going to get 52 years,
00:01:34.480
But if that was committed about 10 days afterwards,
00:01:39.700
that would be different, and he wouldn't be released in the sentencing.
00:01:42.880
So this is going to be something we're going to talk about.
00:01:49.640
Before, he hadn't pled guilty, but this Monday he did plead guilty,
00:02:10.960
8 children who are not named for legal reasons,
00:02:30.740
I'm going to talk a bit about the sentencing and the trial yesterday,
00:02:34.500
and then we're going to highlight some of the important aspects.
00:02:57.760
and he says here that he was trying to help a young girl
00:03:03.880
And you see, one of the really distressing issues about this
00:03:12.300
because they have been traumatized significantly.
00:03:16.820
because he heard the screams and went in and tried to help them,
00:03:19.560
and I think he got stabbed in the leg quite badly in doing so.
00:03:23.140
And also, when Starmer dismissed the reaction to the Southport attack,
00:03:29.520
he rightfully brought up that there are legitimate concerns
00:03:34.200
and that by dismissing people, you're not helping the situation,
00:03:39.280
Not just dismissing, but politicizing those people,
00:03:48.000
Exactly. So this shows really several layers of institutional failures,
00:03:57.160
was why didn't people do something about it before,
00:04:10.900
They said that there were several missed opportunities
00:04:14.880
to identify the risk that Ruda Kubana was posing to other,
00:04:19.740
and they said that the teenager was referred three times
00:04:28.540
the London Bridge attack, the IRA, MI5, and the Middle East.
00:04:31.960
Each time, his case was assessed by counter-terrorist, terror police,
00:04:50.920
and whether they're actually focusing on the things that matter
00:04:54.800
as opposed to focusing on promoting the political agenda.
00:04:58.940
Does it mean he had a history of violence in his schools?
00:05:02.540
I think one thing that Prevent might have kept internally
00:05:06.260
and may have been seen by the likes of Starmer,
00:05:15.220
Like, a lot of the groups which Prevent categorizes
00:05:20.420
and so they might have let him slip between the cracks
00:05:29.640
Right, so about 10 minutes to 11 a.m. yesterday,
00:05:44.580
and the proceeding started around 10 to 12 noon,
00:05:52.260
and the prosecution started laying out evidence
00:05:57.020
and they showed lots of footage about what happened,
00:06:00.540
and they shared the statements from the witnesses,
00:06:09.040
and someone wanted to make it all about himself.
00:06:24.440
he's appealing to the sort of safetyism culture
00:06:33.360
you feeling ill would be the least of your worries.
00:07:47.620
well, did they actually bring that kind of mindset,
00:07:54.560
so they were on the receiving end of the genocide.
01:25:31.900
it's like was it worse that we were under a racist apartheid
01:25:59.940
funny how the prosperity of a nation disappears
01:26:08.180
how does the shaman use the lightning to charge the phone
01:26:12.800
yeah i didn't bring up goblins this time either did i
01:26:15.980
you know south africa not as known for goblins as zimbabwe
01:26:20.000
andrew says thank you carl for ending on this higher note
01:26:22.660
man those first two segments were brutally depressing
01:26:35.540
it's not particularly fun to have to research these things
01:27:02.920
it's surreal to see such efficiency from a government
01:27:07.960
like we don't normally see this level of government efficiency
01:27:18.260
that the fact that trump is promising to do so much on his first day
01:27:28.180
a beautiful example of hitting the ground and running
01:27:39.660
so they know that they can mass move people if they want
01:27:43.240
and biden had a bloody app to help them get in the country anyway
01:27:46.660
if they can bring them here we can send them back
01:27:50.540
the deportations is like taking delivery of a new car josh
01:27:53.380
you have to break it in gently for the first month
01:27:55.400
before you start pushing it to the red line limit
01:28:01.420
but again i think it's just about infrastructure
01:28:05.720
i want to break in the car when it's under warranty
01:28:08.420
so i'll push it to the limit within the first month
01:28:51.900
they're not literally going to call out biden and obama
