Project

ManoWhisper is a project of the Digital Feminist Network and is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Additional financial and in-kind support comes from:

We extend a special thank you to Erlend Simonsen for his generous work and support. Similar to the Knowledge Fight Interactive Search Tool (fight.fudgie.org), we track and identify podcasts connected to movements such as the Intellectual Dark Web, conspiracy theories, QAnon, the Alt-Right, White Supremacy/Nationalism, and the Manosphere. In close dialogue with colleagues in the Digital Feminist Network, we've expanded this work to include more Canadian context. This aligns with our broader research goal of understanding how trends within digital gender discourse ecosystems, including the Manosphere, Femosphere, and incel groups, shape and influence our local institutions and communities. We are deeply inspired by, and grateful for, the Knowledge Fight Interactive Search Tool, and encourage everyone to explore the project. It is regularly updated with new show, episodes, features, and insights.

Website

This site is built with Flask, with search powered by Apache Solr, and has an API.

Transcripts are produced using Whisper (turbo). Some transcripts are sourced from the Knowledge Fight Interactive Search Tool, and flagged as such on their respective show and episode pages.

Episode summaries are generated with gmurro/bart-large-finetuned-filtered-spotify-podcast-summ .

Show and episode statistics, along with automated classification of misogyny ( MilaNLProc/bert-base-uncased-ear-misogyny ) and hate speech ( facebook/roberta-hate-speech-dynabench-r4-target ), are generated with a companion command-line tool also called manowhisper. This website grew out of a set of scripts developed during a 2024 sabbatical project.
