00:35:26.480 A long time ago almost too long ago to remember there lived an old shoemaker

00:35:34.200 His home was far away almost too far to imagine in a small Russian village

00:35:42.240 His name was Ponov but nobody called him Ponov or even shoemaker Ponov wherever he went in the village he was known as Papa Ponov

00:35:55.200 Papa Ponov was not very rich all he owned in the world was one small room looking out onto the village street and in that one room he lived and slept and made shoes but neither was he very poor he had all his shoemaking tools a cast iron stove to cook his food and warm his hands on a great wicker chair where he sat

00:36:23.200 A good firm bed with a patchwork quilt and a little oil lamp to see by when evening crept in

00:36:30.200 And there were so many people who wanted new shoes either made or patched Papa Ponov always had enough money to buy bread for the bakers coffee from the grocers and cabbage to make soup for his dinner

00:36:50.200 So Papa Ponov was quite happy most of the time

00:36:57.200 Most of the time his eyes would sparkle through his little round spectacles and he would sing and whistle and shout a cheery greeting to people passing by

00:37:06.200 But on this particular day

00:37:10.200 But on this particular day it was different

00:37:13.200 Papa Ponov stood sadly in the window of his little shop and thought of his wife who had died many years before

00:37:21.200 And of his sons and daughters who had all grown up and gone away

00:37:26.200 It was Christmas Eve and everybody else was at home with their families

00:37:33.200 Oh dear said Papa Ponov pulling at his long green mustache and shaking his head slowly from side to side

00:37:42.200 Oh dear

00:37:45.200 And there was no one to bring back the sparkle behind his little round spectacles

00:37:51.200 Papa Ponov sighed a great sigh

00:37:54.200 Then he slowly lit his oil lamp went to a high shelf and lifted down an old brown book

00:38:03.200 He dusted some scraps of leather off the bench set a pot of coffee on the stove

00:38:10.200 Sat down in his great wicker chair and began to read

00:38:15.200 Now Papa Ponov had never been to school and could not read very well

00:38:22.200 So as he went he ran his fingers along the line saying the words out loud

00:38:29.200 This was the story of Christmas

00:38:32.200 He read how a little boy Jesus was born

00:38:36.200 Not in a good warm house

00:38:39.200 But in a cow shed

00:38:41.200 Because there wasn't any room at the inn where his father and mother had asked to stay the night

00:38:48.200 Oh dear said Papa Ponov pulling at his long mustache

00:38:53.200 If they had come here they could have slept on my bed

00:38:57.200 And I would have covered the little boy with my patchwork quilt

00:39:02.200 I should like some company and the little child to play with

00:39:07.200 Papa Ponov got up and poked the stove

00:39:11.200 It was becoming quite foggy outside

00:39:14.200 So he turned up the lamp

00:39:17.200 He read how the rich men traveled across the desert

00:39:22.200 To bring wonderful presents for the little boy Jesus

00:39:26.200 Presents of gold and sweet smelling spices

00:39:31.200 Oh dear said Papa Ponov

00:39:34.200 If Jesus came here I shouldn't have anything to give him

00:39:39.200 Then he smiled and his eyes sparkled

00:39:44.200 Behind his little round spectacles

00:39:47.200 He got up from the table and went over to the high shelf

00:39:51.200 On it was a dusty box with string

00:39:55.200 He opened the box and unwrapped a pair of tiny shoes

00:40:00.200 Papa Ponov held one small shoe in each hand and stood very still

00:40:06.200 They were the best shoes he had ever made

00:40:10.200 He put them lovingly away in their box

00:40:13.200 And lowered his old limbs back into the great woodwork chair

00:40:18.200 That's what I would have given him

00:40:21.200 He murmured

00:40:22.200 He sighed a deep sigh and turned his attention to the book once more

00:40:29.200 Now whether it was the warmth of the room

00:40:33.200 Or whether it was because it was getting late

00:40:35.200 Who can say?

00:40:37.200 But it wasn't long before Papa Ponov's bony little finger

00:40:41.200 Slid from the page

00:40:43.200 His little round spectacles slipped from his nose

00:40:46.200 And he fell sound asleep

00:40:49.200 Outside the fog grew thicker

00:40:53.200 Dim figures glided past the window

00:40:56.200 But the old shoemaker slumbered on, snoring gently

01:00:16.680 And a lot of times people ask the question, you know, can we really find peace on earth?

01:00:25.020 How do we know that Jesus really is the one that really offers true peace?

01:00:30.560 There are so many world religions today.

01:00:32.840 There are so many people looking for true peace, so many people looking for real peace, lasting peace.

01:00:38.960 You know, and people try different things, right?

01:00:41.520 And so Pastor Bill and I were talking about this in the last couple of weeks.

01:00:45.520 And so I thought I would kind of be the person that's really looking to see if I can find real peace and get some answers from Pastor Bill.

01:00:54.460 So, you know, we kind of drill in this a little bit.

01:00:57.640 But and so, Pastor Bill, I'm going to ask you, how do we know for sure that Jesus is the one that really gives us peace?

01:01:07.300 What would you say to somebody asking that question?

01:01:10.480 I would say that, number one, he's a historical fact that he existed.

01:01:16.280 And that is just something that's irrefutable.

01:01:20.400 He did live.

01:01:21.640 He existed, he walked the earth.

01:01:23.440 And then the other part is, but is he who he said he was?

01:01:28.760 And there's so many prophetic words.

01:01:32.160 We have to look to the Old Testament to see all the I think there's over 60 prophecies about his first coming.

01:01:38.460 And that he would be the son of Abraham, that he would be the son of Isaac, that he'd be the son of David, that he would be born of a virgin Mary.

01:01:48.600 And so there's so many prophecies that he fulfilled, just the very one in Genesis 3 and 15.

01:01:56.620 I will put enmity between you and the woman, between her seed and your seed.

01:02:00.440 And that was fulfilled.

01:02:01.560 Of course, God sent forth his son, made of a woman, made under the law.

01:02:07.880 And it says that God born under the law to redeem those who are under the law so he might have the adoption of sons.

01:02:17.060 And so there's so many prophecies that were fulfilled.

01:02:19.560 So just looking at them and someone said, well, what's the chances?

01:02:22.620 I mean, just the chances of fulfilling even eight of the 60 some odd prophecies.

01:02:29.720 What would how could that possibly happen?

01:02:31.760 And what would be the the the the stakes on that?

01:02:36.360 What would be the percentage of him fulfilling even just eight of those prophecies being fulfilled?

01:02:42.060 And it's an amazing thing to consider.

01:02:44.140 And Dan and I talked about this.

01:02:46.100 If you looked at the landmass of Alberta, it's about 256,000 square miles, 600, about 670,000 square kilometers.

01:02:58.560 It would take literally to put on that landmass four and a half feet deep of silver dollars or loonies, whatever kind of one you want to use.

01:03:12.400 But it would be filling that whole mass of land, province of Alberta, four and a half feet high, taking one coin, going up in an airplane and just dropping it in the in the middle of the whole bunch and telling a person you've got one chance to pick a coin.

01:03:28.560 And pick it.

01:03:30.800 And so they pick that coin and it's the very one you dropped out of the plane.

01:03:35.560 And that would be the very the same chance of Jesus fulfilling these prophecies.

01:03:42.220 So it's a miracle in itself that these prophecies were fulfilled.

01:03:56.900 You know, Pastor Bill, there is a prophecy that Messiah would be hung on a tree in the Old Testament.

01:04:07.860 I mean, you know, what are the chances of that?

01:04:10.180 Now, I want to take this a step further.

01:04:12.820 There's a book that I have here by Josh McDowell, Evidence That Demands a Verdict, that talks about the chances or the percentages of one man fulfilling all of these prophecies.

01:04:24.100 And he takes it a step further.

01:04:26.860 He talks about one man fulfilling, let's say, 48 of the biblical prophecies in the Old Testament.

01:04:33.140 And he talks about the fact that the electron is the smallest thing that we have on earth.

01:04:40.680 And he says, so for one person to fulfill, say, 48 of the 64 or 65 Old Testament prophecies of Messiah's coming, okay, are one in 10 to the 157th power.

01:04:58.600 Now, let me put that in perspective, okay?

01:05:00.400 If you were to take that many electrons and stretch them out in a line, they would fill an inch.

01:05:10.500 Now, that doesn't seem like very long, but electrons are so small.

01:05:15.580 Let me put that into perspective.

01:05:16.860 If you were to count that many electrons, 250 of them per minute, do you know how long that would take you?

01:05:26.320 How long, Dan?

01:05:27.780 That would take you 19 million years.

01:05:31.840 Wow, isn't that something?

01:05:32.980 But that's not the sum of it.

01:05:36.520 One in 10 to the 157th power would have to take an inch cube.

01:05:46.180 So that would take you 19 million years times 19 million years times 19 million years of counting electrons.

01:05:53.700 Now, Pastor Bill, you're not going to be around that long, and neither am I, to count that many electrons.

01:05:59.400 That's for one person fulfilling 48 of those 64 or 65 prophecies, and Jesus fulfilled them all.

01:06:10.100 Now, the other thing is there's over 300 prophecies about Christ in the Old Testament, right?

01:06:18.340 There's prophecies of him coming back, and so people really wonder, can I really find peace on earth?

01:06:25.060 And the answer is, you know, he said who he said he was, and he proved it.

01:06:31.920 And, I mean, you know, the Bible talks about that he would raise from the dead.

01:06:39.420 I mean, you didn't choose where you'd be born.

01:06:46.820 I didn't choose that I'd be born, like, in a hospital or a manger.

01:06:51.580 I didn't choose that I'd have a predecessor or what they would call me.

01:06:59.760 And so if you're wondering tonight, can I really find peace on earth?

01:07:31.500 But take just a few moments to tell us, how did you find peace in your life through Jesus Christ?

01:07:36.940 Well, I was a young man of just 18 years old or 19 years old.

01:07:41.920 I'd already been involved in the group in the 70s, of course, 60s and 70s.

01:07:47.520 Got into music.

01:07:48.680 I was playing drums in a band and had dreams of being a rock star and all this stuff.

01:07:54.920 And I had so many, a number of bad experiences on drugs, bad trips, you might call them.

01:08:04.860 And my mom and dad were very, very concerned for me.

01:08:08.360 So, they moved from Sydney, actually.

01:08:12.180 It's not that far.

01:08:12.920 But back then, there was no, it seemed like it was further, to a little fishing village called

01:08:17.340 Lewisburg.

01:08:18.220 They moved us out here and thought it would help me, sort of get me away from the crowd

01:08:23.320 I was with.

01:08:23.920 And although that didn't help, but God had a purpose in it.

01:08:28.120 God had a, it's amazing how he orchestrates things.

01:08:31.720 And I only knew one person in this little town of Lewisburg I met at one of our rehearsals.

01:08:37.000 It was a girl, her name was Rosette.

01:08:40.100 And so, when we moved in, I, after we finished moving, I went down the street, walked down the

01:08:47.480 road a bit, and who was out throwing a ball to her dog, her golden retriever, but was Rosette.

01:08:53.920 And she saw me, recognized me.

01:08:55.920 Hey, Billy, she said.

01:08:57.320 And we started walking and talking.

01:08:59.940 And that night, I was so obvious, I had hair way down to my backside.

01:09:04.080 And I used to wear an old denim jacket with patches all over my jeans.

01:09:08.660 And I'd have a smoked Colombian chief on the back of my jacket.

01:09:14.860 Anyway, I was kind of in a mess.

01:09:17.180 And she said to me, you know, you need to be saved.

01:09:20.220 She was the funeral director's daughter.

01:09:21.680 And I couldn't get that word saved out of my head.

01:09:26.040 You know, she, and about two weeks later, the lead guitar player had had an experience.

01:09:32.940 A tourist going through town had led him to the Lord.

01:09:35.020 I was telling him what my wife, Rosette, well, my future wife, Rosette, would told me

01:09:39.420 of being saved.

01:09:41.020 And I was just puzzled by saved.

01:09:43.480 What do you mean saved?

01:09:44.360 And he said, I know what saved is.

01:09:47.780 I gave my heart to the Lord.

01:09:49.840 I would come into my house.

01:09:51.520 It was about three or four in the morning.

01:09:53.180 We went into his house, stood in the kitchen.

01:09:55.720 He said, would you like to be saved?

01:09:56.880 I said, yes, I would.

01:09:58.220 And he quoted a scripture to me of John's gospel.

01:10:01.360 If any man comes to me, I will in no wise cast him out.

01:10:05.760 And when he said that, now I was on LSD at the time when he said this to me.

01:10:09.660 When he said that, I just knew what it meant.

01:10:13.760 It just, just a revelation of it.

01:10:15.980 God in his mercy just gave me revelation that it meant God loved me, that Jesus died for

01:10:22.500 me, that I just believed it.

01:10:24.400 And I said, yes, I want to be saved.

01:10:26.300 He said, pray this prayer with me and you're going to just have this great feeling.

01:10:32.880 And I prayed this simple little prayer, Jesus, I believe you're the son of God.

01:10:42.480 Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart and save me and give me eternal life.

01:10:47.100 And I prayed the prayer with him and I didn't feel a thing.

01:10:51.680 And I said, maybe it's the drugs because Rosette told me that drugs was wrong and God wouldn't

01:10:57.520 And he went, I'm going to go to bed.

01:11:00.800 I laid on the couch for about, I don't know how long it was.

01:11:04.400 And I kept praying that prayer over and over and over.

01:11:06.660 And suddenly, I had a suddenly moment.

01:11:10.060 The spirit of God, the spirit of Christ came in my life.

01:11:14.020 I just jumped up off of that couch and knew I was saved.

01:11:18.320 And he came running down the stairs.

01:11:21.060 I said, Bobby, I'm leaving all this and I'm going home.

01:11:23.540 And I got home and God began to change my life radically, radically.

01:11:29.600 And I began to follow him.

01:11:33.000 And my mom came to the Lord also.

01:11:36.120 And eventually, my dad and my Rosette, I went off and ended up going to Bible college.

01:11:41.820 Rosette came to the Lord, really and seriously.

01:11:45.460 And we got married and have spent now 40 some odd years in ministry.

01:11:52.620 But he brought his peace.

01:11:54.580 I was a young man without peace, full of fear, full of anxiety.

01:11:58.260 And he brought his peace into my life.

01:12:03.120 It's a supernatural event, giving us his shalom, his peace, nothing broken, nothing missing.
