00:00:00.000 If I can teach a child to develop a passion for learning, show them how to ask really solid questions, to equip them with researching skills, then no matter what they're faced with, whether it's a political system that we're facing in our country,
00:00:22.060 whether it's figuring out if they want to buy a Toyota or a Prius, whatever it is, they know how to ask strong questions, they know how to do their homework, they know how to develop a foundation for what it is they believe and why they believe it.
00:00:41.820 And I know that the studies show us that Christian kids who leave home and go away to university, the numbers are staggering of the children who also walk away from the church because the foundation of being able to ask questions and identify why do I believe what I believe, how do I know I can trust it, we didn't do that as well as we needed to in a lot of cases.
00:01:07.580 And so our children sort of get lost in the shuffle and some of them come back because God is faithful and he promises that he won't walk away, he's waiting with open arms.
00:01:21.560 But I know that my older children have said to me that when they were in university, they faced some of those challenges and it was time for them to ask those questions.
00:01:32.340 Why?
00:01:33.120 Why do I believe what I believe?
00:01:34.800 How can I prove to myself that I believe that?
00:01:38.480 Why is it not just mom and dad?
00:01:41.100 So the journey of homeschooling, I would say, is far richer than reading, writing, and arithmetic, but we have the freedom there to delve into those other issues that are so important for the strength of a godly family.
00:01:58.180 And when we are talking about some of the issues in the public school classrooms right now that are the hot topics that are the motivation for coming together like this in this forum, we're very concerned about the information that's being presented.
00:02:13.720 So as homeschoolers, we have the freedom, the privilege, the right, and the obligation in our homeschool to teach our children discernment so that when they're faced with these things, they're able to say, this is not where I'm supposed to be.
00:02:33.640 Now, how you get there, I could talk for a long time about different models of education.
00:02:40.780 And that's probably a conversation for another night, because everybody's, everybody's different, everybody's homeschool is going to look different.
00:02:49.720 And the most discouraging thing you can do with a homeschool is say, well, my kid isn't as smart as Heather's kid, or Heather's kid is going to make more money than my kid.
00:03:00.080 And, and that's irrelevant, because Heather's, Heather's kid is learning something different than what my kid is learning.
00:03:07.860 And her kid is maybe gifted in a different way, and that's okay.
00:03:12.080 And maybe Heather is working two part time jobs, because she's a single mom, or maybe I'm like, Martha Stewart, and everything I do has frosting and sparkles on it.
00:03:26.180 And that's just not her gig.
00:03:27.580 And that's okay, and a little bit true.
00:03:31.220 But we have to be able to give families the freedom and, and conversely, the support to find the thing that's really going to motivate the family unit to learn together.
00:03:46.660 But as we learn together, we also develop relationship.
00:03:51.580 And this whole relationship part is huge, because who do you trust?
00:03:57.580 Do you trust a stranger walking down the street?
00:04:00.420 Or do you trust the person that you have the most intimate relationship with?
00:04:05.140 And those generally are our family.
00:04:07.500 And the more we invest in our family, the richer the relationship, the deeper the trust, the, the like mindedness continues to grow, we're able to talk openly, and we might not always agree, but we're safe to have the discussion.
00:04:24.520 And these are some of the things that we found that homeschooling has been magnificent for in terms of growing our family and giving our children opportunities to branch out.
00:04:38.960 So I have five children, all five totally different personalities, the one thing that they have in common is service.
00:04:49.040 Every single one of them has pursued a career in serving other people.
00:04:54.920 They're also having those two who can see kind of houses in talking to them.
00:04:58.800 And they are fun here.
00:04:59.680 They want to talk to them more easily.
00:05:00.740 And people, we don't know.
00:05:01.680 You know, we don't know.
00:05:02.300 We don't really want to know right now.
00:05:04.100 We don't know.
00:05:04.820 We don't know that.
00:05:04.980 We don't know.
00:05:05.520 We just need a dream.
00:05:06.780 We don't know.
00:05:07.500 We want to take aframe with a son.
00:05:08.420 This is something we need.
00:05:10.380 We don't know.
00:05:10.700 We don't know how to tell you.
00:05:12.860 But back then we're going to help the supernatural together together.
00:05:14.660 We don't know.
00:05:15.720 We don't know.
00:05:16.760 You know what?
00:05:18.020 You know.
00:05:18.860 We don't know.
00:05:20.020 We don't know what other people want to hear what we don't know.
00:05:20.180 We don't know it.
