I felt really privileged to have been part of the BC SOGI Educator Network this year.
00:00:17.160
What the BC SOGI Educator Network has done is brought these individuals who are passionate
00:00:22.240
and who are knowledgeable and just brilliant and beautiful people come together with one
00:00:31.040
Many districts are now providing a district coordinator or district lead person who can
00:00:39.440
There are numerous benefits for a district choosing to have a lead person in a SOGI role
00:00:44.500
because they have dedicated time to implement the policy.
00:00:48.540
I think the biggest reward is just being able to work with fabulous people from around the
00:00:52.320
province and working together as a group just feels amazing.
00:00:57.860
This is an area that I feel very passionate about but I never felt like I knew all the
00:01:01.600
answers or the best way to educate people and I think being connected with educators from
00:01:07.560
around the province has really helped me gain a greater understanding and awareness about
00:01:12.500
what is needed in schools and school districts.
00:01:15.520
The process of recruiting and training our SOGI school leads was actually a really positive
00:01:21.620
What I would suggest to anybody who is considering becoming a SOGI school lead is just go for
00:01:27.240
I would say it's important to have a SOGI school lead both for students and staff.
00:01:34.880
They know that they are going to be their advocate.
00:01:37.880
For staff, I would say it's also very important.
00:01:40.880
I've had numerous staff members come to me and ask me questions.
00:01:47.180
We're having a contact, we have a social studies contact, we have a math contact.
00:01:50.800
So a SOGI contact is going to fit right in with that.
00:01:53.140
There's someone there who's centralized to coordinate the efforts.
00:01:56.360
One of the things I'm really proud of with our SOGI leads is that they're not all teachers.
00:02:00.980
We have principals, vice principals who wanted to be the SOGI leads for their schools.
00:02:07.340
We have a custodian in one of our buildings who's a SOGI lead.
00:02:12.560
We do have a lot of teachers but we want champions.
00:02:15.180
The advice I would give for teachers considering becoming a SOGI school lead is that they themselves
00:02:22.680
do not need to ask whether or not they hold up a membership card to any particular group.
00:02:29.300
The first question I have from so many teachers who wish to be a part of this is, what do I
00:02:37.020
And the answer is, you just have to be ready to listen.
00:02:41.320
You have to be a part of the discussion and the dialogue.
00:02:44.320
I am no expert and my students remind me of this every day.
00:02:48.020
So if you don't know the answer to a question, you can find support even from your district coordinator.
00:02:55.020
There is the website SOGI123 that you can go to.
00:03:00.520
I would encourage anyone who's considering being a SOGI lead to take on this leadership
00:03:05.300
position in their school because it will have great impact.
00:03:09.220
They know where their staff and students and parents are at in terms of their awareness
00:03:15.320
They know the best way to bring about change and progress within their school.
00:03:21.120
If you feel like you're a teacher who wishes to care for students, then there's no other
00:03:27.820
The BC SOGI Educator Network has been very valuable.
00:03:31.200
It's been a place where you can get together with a group of people and you can share resources.
00:03:35.560
You can network and brainstorm and get ideas from other people.
00:03:39.940
The other thing which has been valuable is the opportunity to see others facing challenges.
00:03:45.300
And getting strength from how they've dealt with those challenges, but also strength knowing
00:03:50.340
that you're not the only one having those challenges.
00:03:53.460
We have a tendency sometimes to sort of work in silos and that really minimizes the type
00:03:59.060
But when we're actually working together, I think what we've seen over these past several
00:04:02.300
months is the proof of a really rapid and deep level of impact, a real change in the system.
00:04:10.000
We don't know where we're going to go next, but we're going to keep on this journey because
00:04:13.420
we know there is much more work yet to be done.
