Transcript

00:00:00.000 Owen and Aaron Benfield.
00:00:04.000 Man, I am in a coma until about noon.
00:00:06.000 Alex Owen and Aaron Benfield.
00:00:10.000 We're here talking to Alex Owen and Aaron Benfield here on East 49th Street.
00:00:17.000 And how long have y'all lived next door to Mr. Joe Campana?
00:00:22.000 We've lived next to him the past six months or so, but our roommate lived here for about two and a half years, and he's been saying the same things about him.
00:00:31.000 He pretty much keeps to himself and doesn't bother anybody.
00:00:35.000 And you don't even see him that often, do you?
00:00:37.000 I've seen him once.
00:00:38.000 I hear he must around in the yard from time to time, but I've only actually seen him once.
00:00:44.000 We were also told that Mr. Capanna is a Vietnam veteran and that he's fully disabled.
00:00:51.000 I'm not sure about fully disabled because I do see him or hear him wrestle around in the back, but I heard he is a vet, but I really don't know much about the stories behind that.
00:01:03.000 So you rarely see him.
00:01:05.000 How often do y'all see him?
00:01:08.000 Twice a month?
00:01:09.000 Yeah, very rarely.
00:01:13.000 He'll be mowing his lawn one day and that's the only time we see him.
00:01:17.000 So he keeps his lawn up?
00:01:20.000 The backyard's not the most attractive, but we've got a privacy fence.
00:01:24.000 Yeah, nobody sees that.
00:01:25.000 Nobody really sees it.
00:01:26.000 The front yard's cut, and the house isn't attractive, but it doesn't bother me.
00:01:32.000 Well, it's his property, and it's better than him being out on the streets freezing to death or panhandling, or even worse, engaged in criminal activity.
00:01:40.000 Of course.
00:01:41.000 He doesn't bother anybody, and I'll see why we should bother him.
00:01:46.000 Mr. Benfield, do you have a problem?
00:01:50.000 With this gentleman living next door to you, he has lived there since the mid-1950s.
00:01:56.000 Do you think he's causing a problem?
00:01:58.000 No, not at all.
00:01:59.000 I mean, I've only been here for six months, but I've been coming over to this house since this guy's lived here, the other roommate, and that's two, three years.
00:02:07.000 And I've never heard anything bad about this guy.
00:02:10.000 I don't have a problem with him at all.
00:02:11.000 Why do you think the city's planning to bulldoze his home?
00:02:14.000 Because his house is, I guess it appears ugly to people, and I really think the problem is that the neighbor on the other side is selling his house, and I bet that kind of deflates the price of his house that he wants to sell it for.
00:02:29.000 What does this say about society?
00:02:31.000 It just says society is too concerned with image, and really, I mean, it's just, image is nothing, you know, and it's all about life and how you feel about things.
00:02:43.000 He just doesn't bother anybody.
00:02:47.000 You shouldn't tear something down.
00:02:48.000 You shouldn't wreck something just because it's ugly.
00:02:51.000 Plus, it's his property.
00:02:53.000 Yeah, it's his property.
00:02:55.000 If he's been sitting there since the 50s, he's got a right to stay.
00:03:00.000 I just don't see the point in tearing his own house down.
00:03:03.000 Somebody's going to come to my house and start ripping my stuff up.
00:03:08.000 I'll be pretty mad, especially if I own the property.
00:03:10.000 Plus, he's a veteran and...
00:03:12.000 The news has been reporting that he's disabled.
00:03:15.000 Yeah, I mean, you fight in a war, you think your country should protect you and should get more rights, you know?
00:03:23.000 And, I mean, I just don't see why they could do this to him, you know?
00:03:28.000 He fought for the country and, well, that's about it.
00:03:35.000 We're here on East 49th Street, right next door to Mr. Capanna's home.
00:03:38.000 He's been here since the mid-1950s.
00:03:41.000 He's a veteran, and he's fully disabled.
00:03:45.000 How long have y'all been around Mr. Capanna?
00:03:49.000 How long have y'all lived here?
00:03:51.000 Well, we lived here the past six months, seeing Mr. Capanna around.
00:03:57.000 He's been a fine neighbor for us.
00:04:00.000 He doesn't bother us, and we don't bother him any.
00:04:04.000 I think the whole deal comes down to the neighbors and the property value, because this house doesn't bother anybody besides financial reports.
00:04:18.000 So you think that's what it comes down to?
00:04:20.000 We heard that it was caused by some neighbors complaining, and we heard that this was all caused by some neighbors complaining.
00:04:27.000 It's funny that y'all would mention that.
00:04:29.000 There's a for sale sign on the house next door to Mr. Capanas.
00:04:33.000 Yeah, that's right.
00:04:34.000 I've seen them.
00:04:35.000 I think they're already gone.
00:04:37.000 I saw a moving truck there a couple of days ago.
00:04:39.000 So I'm thinking, you know, they had to leave and they're really trying to sell this house and they haven't sold it yet.
00:04:44.000 And they've got this so-called ugly house next door.
00:04:48.000 And it's not attractive.
00:04:49.000 I'll be the first to admit that.
00:04:50.000 But that's nothing.
00:04:52.000 I mean, just because something looks bad, it's going to make the property next door depreciate in value.
00:04:59.000 And it's just not right.
00:05:01.000 So ruin somebody's life, tear down a veteran at a disabled person's home just so they can get more cash.
00:05:06.000 Exactly.
00:05:06.000 Somebody that fought in a war for this country, and you're going to come and tear his house down in the country you fought for?
00:05:13.000 That's just ridiculous.
00:05:15.000 That's not America.
00:05:16.000 No, that doesn't sound like America to me.
00:05:19.000 And who is this little...
00:05:20.000 Now, there's one more person I want to meet here before we leave.
00:05:24.000 Who is this?
00:05:25.000 This is little Yoda, and he doesn't have any complaints either.
00:05:29.000 Yoda, do you have a problem, Mr. Capanna?
00:05:32.000 No.
00:05:33.000 Do you want to tear down their house?
00:05:34.000 Let me talk to you.
00:05:35.000 This is serious.
00:05:40.000 Yeah, one more thing.
00:05:42.000 I can remember that he used to have some old cars out there, and this is about a year ago, and the city came out and took them, and they weren't junk cars.
00:05:52.000 You know, the doors were still in the cars.
00:05:54.000 All the glass was still there.
00:05:55.000 They weren't beat up.
00:05:58.000 They just didn't run, and I know he had a couple sitting out in the front, and the city came out and took those, too.
00:06:03.000 So, and I think it's one of those image things, again, that we were talking about earlier, but it just didn't look good, and then somebody got mad and took them away, so.
00:06:12.000 So, again, minding his own business.
00:06:13.000 Somebody didn't like it.
00:06:14.000 They just came and took it.
00:06:15.000 Yep.
00:06:16.000 Well, this is American for you guys.
00:06:18.000 Home of the free and home of the brave.
00:06:20.000 Right here in America, the big government types, well, they want your property.
00:06:24.000 They want your life.
00:06:24.000 They want control.
00:06:26.000 They're control freaks.
00:06:27.000 Be aware of them.
00:06:27.000 And stand up against them.
00:06:29.000 All right, that's good.
00:06:31.000 Thanks, sir.
00:06:35.000 Hey, how you doing, sir?
00:06:37.000 We don't mean to stop you, buddy.
00:06:39.000 Hey, I'm Alex Jones from KJFK Radio.
00:06:42.000 We also have a little AXS TV show.
00:06:43.000 Do you know Mr. Kaminas?
00:06:46.000 No.
00:06:46.000 Or what's the name, Kapanas?
00:06:49.000 Kapanas.
00:06:50.000 Yeah.
00:06:51.000 Sir, do you know Mr. Kapanas, who lives right down here in the little greenhouse?
00:06:56.000 No.
00:06:57.000 I've seen you before.
00:06:58.000 I support y'all, but I cannot comment while I'm working.
00:07:01.000 Okay.
00:07:02.000 Well, does he take his mail and everything?
00:07:04.000 I guess.
00:07:04.000 I don't know.
00:07:05.000 Okay, thanks.
00:07:06.000 Thank you, man.
00:07:06.000 Appreciate it.
00:07:07.000 What do you pay?
00:07:08.000 You know why I'm mr. Capanna's house is gonna get torn down Will you talk to us for a second?
00:07:30.000 I don't have, I mean, I don't even live here.
00:07:33.000 I don't think I'll do you any good.
00:07:35.000 That's all I'm doing now.
00:07:36.000 I understand.
00:07:38.000 Yeah, we'll do that.
00:07:42.000 Thanks.
00:07:46.000 That's not how you get people to talk, Mike.
00:07:51.000 We're here on East 49th Street where Joe Capanna lives.
00:07:53.000 Is Joe Capanna a veteran?
00:07:56.000 He's lived here since at least 1959, and we're told he's fully disabled, according to the KI News report.
00:08:03.000 Well, Mr. Capan is not here right now, but you can see his home does have some structural problems, but people due to property values in this area on East 49 and some of the other homes that are being sold in this area have filed complaints with the city, and on Tuesday they're coming out here with bulldozers to destroy this structure.
00:08:23.000 Of course...
00:08:24.000 We haven't heard of any churches or organizations that care to help Mr. Cappana, a veteran.
00:08:29.000 We see these movies like Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line, showing you the plight of soldiers in World War II, but no, no, not Mr. Cappana.
00:08:40.000 They'd rather make him homeless, throw him out, and then let the social welfare net take care of him.
00:08:45.000 Probably cost ten times over time what it would cost to simply fix this structure.
00:08:49.000 If we can get in touch with Mr. Cappana, we will...
00:08:52.000 Come out here and help shore up his home, no matter what the cost, right here at the Freedom Report.
00:08:59.000 Yeah, isn't that the way it happens?
00:09:01.000 Anyone that, you know, it's kind of like you.
00:09:04.000 I mean, you put your butt on the line for a lot of people, you know, and a lot of people don't understand that not all the battles are done overseas, you know.
00:09:13.000 The biggest battles are done right here.
00:09:16.000 People don't even realize it.
00:09:17.000 People don't realize it.
00:09:20.000 Better watch out, too, because, you know, they might come up and prick you, give you a little bit of cancer.
00:09:26.000 Don't tell me it hadn't been done.
00:09:28.000 Oh, it has been done a lot of times.
00:09:30.000 I'm sure.
00:09:30.000 So what do y'all think about Mr. Joe Capanna's home here that's going to be torn down Tuesday by the bulldozers?
00:09:38.000 I really think that it's a shame that it seems to be a crime to not be wealthy.
00:09:45.000 You know, I'm sure he's going to make a great parking lot or a great house for maybe Paige Gresset.
00:09:50.000 Who knows?
00:09:54.000 Yeah, well, it's really bad.
00:09:55.000 I mean, one thing that people have, I think, kind of lost sight of is that it's his property.
00:10:02.000 Simply.
00:10:03.000 It's his.
00:10:04.000 He owns it.
00:10:04.000 He can do what he wants with it.
00:10:06.000 Or at least should be able to.
00:10:08.000 I've got some land in Oklahoma.
00:10:11.000 And my grandfather gave it to me because I was the only one.
00:10:16.000 He sat me down and he said, don't ever, ever get government help.
00:10:21.000 Don't ever ask for government programs for anything for the land.
00:10:25.000 They'll try.
00:10:26.000 Don't.
00:10:27.000 Because once they get on your land, they'll find something that's endangered or they'll find something that's wrong and they'll try to get it.
00:10:34.000 And he's seen it happen, you know, a lot of rural land.
00:10:38.000 He's seen that happen, and so that's why he gave it to me.
00:10:41.000 It's all for loving reasons, of course.
00:10:43.000 Yeah.
00:10:44.000 So you all think that Mr. Capanna should be left alone?
00:10:46.000 We've been trying to talk to him, but he's obviously...
00:10:48.000 He's scared, probably, hell.
00:10:50.000 Yeah, well, we're told he's disabled, and we're also told that he's a war veteran.
00:10:55.000 According to KI News, it's done a report.
00:10:57.000 But what we're trying to find out is we've got some churches and some organizations that are ready.
00:11:02.000 The company that I work with on the side of Mountain View Homes, we're ready to come in here and fix the house and put a roof on it.
00:11:08.000 If the city will just back off.
00:11:11.000 I tell you what, I'd be willing to help and I'd get some local comics.
00:11:16.000 I guarantee you there's people that are ready to help.
00:11:18.000 I mean, you guys were just driving by and wanted to help.
00:11:21.000 So you kind of...
00:11:24.000 You kind of summed it up in a nutshell, didn't you?
00:11:26.000 It's his property.
00:11:27.000 Yeah, well, it's, you know, back in the early history of our country, it seemed more like where, you know, if you own your land, you could do whatever the heck you wanted with it as long as you didn't bother anybody else.
00:11:40.000 But now, you know, it's kind of tough, especially when you've got someone saying, okay, I don't know what the problems were, what the issues were.
00:11:52.000 You know, were that were brought up, and in all honesty, I don't have any idea if there's any justification.
00:11:58.000 You know, from the city standpoint or not, maybe the only thing I can think of that might be reasonable would be a health issue.
00:12:03.000 But still, the thing is, is that why not help the guy out?
00:12:10.000 I mean, if nothing else, you know, instead of tearing down his house, don't we have enough money?
00:12:16.000 In our city to do something like help out one of our neighbors.
00:12:19.000 Hey, hey, we'll put him on the float for Veterans Day.
00:12:22.000 We'll make it okay.
00:12:24.000 We'll give him a nice little parade, some smiles, a little flag, and say thanks.
00:12:28.000 And his own little spot on 6th Street.
00:12:32.000 Oh, yeah.
00:12:33.000 Yeah, it'll be fine.
00:12:34.000 Well, the thing I don't understand is, is if they're going to tear this down...
00:12:38.000 That's a great point.
00:12:39.000 He's going to be on welfare then.
00:12:40.000 It's going to cost ten times the money over the years.
00:12:42.000 Why not just get in here and fix the house for him?
00:12:44.000 He's a veteran.
00:12:45.000 Yeah, well, it'd certainly be a lot easier.
00:12:47.000 Are you kidding me?
00:12:49.000 This is prime real estate.
00:12:50.000 This is prime real estate.
00:12:52.000 Especially with the airport moving?
00:12:54.000 Yeah, yeah.
00:12:54.000 It's gentrifying?
00:12:55.000 You know, the thing is that...
00:12:57.000 Well, you know they'll tear it down and then charge him around $14,000 to $20,000 just for tearing it down and then place a lien on his property.
00:13:04.000 Then it's the city's.
00:13:05.000 Yeah, it'll only take time.
00:13:07.000 And the thing is, even if not, what does he have?
00:13:10.000 I mean, at that point, there's absolutely nothing here.
00:13:14.000 You know, I don't know if, you know, even maybe it's something that the city shouldn't have paid for, but if not, maybe that's a lacking of, you know, of all of our parts, you know, being, you know, just too concerned with their own, you know, issues.
00:13:28.000 Maybe it shouldn't have gotten to be like this in the first place.
00:13:31.000 Well, he's just been minding his own business, and now part of his house is in deep trouble, and we certainly hope somebody does come in here.
00:13:37.000 Help Mr. Capana.
00:13:39.000 Guys, thanks for talking to us.
00:13:40.000 If you've got anyone to do that, that's great.
00:13:42.000 Well, Monday night on the Freedom Report, we'll be talking about it also on our radio show tonight.
00:13:46.000 We watch the Freedom Report.
00:13:47.000 We do.
00:13:48.000 Thanks for putting up with us.
00:13:50.000 Let me say one thing.
00:13:52.000 If you ever find yourself with the opportunity to speak in front of people, whether it's stand-up comedy, whether it's your own show, radio show, TV show, if you have a chance to open your mouth.
00:14:05.000 Speak your mind, tell the truth, don't be scared, okay?
00:14:08.000 Don't be scared.
00:14:10.000 The more of us stand up, the easier it's going to be.
00:14:12.000 Exactly.
00:14:13.000 Hey, good meeting you guys.
00:14:13.000 What's y'all's names again?
00:14:14.000 My name's Steven Kendrick.
00:14:15.000 Steve?
00:14:16.000 There's more of us than there are them.
00:14:18.000 There's more of us than there are them.
00:14:20.000 That's right!
00:14:21.000 How would I say that?
00:14:22.000 There's more of us than there are them, and if we all just said, no, we're not going to put up with it, no, you're not going to do this to us anymore, they can't.
00:14:31.000 But they're doing it for us!
00:14:34.000 Well, let's just take care of that then, I guess, you know?
00:14:38.000 Buddy, thanks a lot.
00:14:39.000 It's all in voting.
00:14:39.000 Y'all be careful.
00:14:40.000 We're here talking to Joe Campana.
00:14:43.000 How long have you lived here, sir, on East 49th Street?
00:14:46.000 Since 1959. Since 1959, and you were in World War II and Korea?
00:14:51.000 Yes.
00:14:52.000 And you have 100% disability from the government?
00:14:55.000 Yes.
00:14:56.000 Constable.
00:14:59.000 Now you say, and I'm glad that you came out to talk to us, so I want to thank you for that.
00:15:04.000 You're saying that the city's been harassing you for 20 years?
00:15:08.000 Yes, they have, since 77 about the matter.
00:15:12.000 And it's here under other, and it has to prove injury before other can be overridden by the city.
00:15:20.000 It's been out of their jurisdiction all that time, and they've been offending constitutional provisions every time they find me about the matter.
00:15:27.000 And now they seized my property, they took it falsely.
00:15:33.000 They've seized your property?
00:15:34.000 Oh, yes.
00:15:35.000 My cars and my shielding and everything in the backyard.
00:15:39.000 Thousands of dollars worth of equipment and even the lumber to do.
00:15:43.000 Well, your neighbors told us that you used to have some cars that weren't even in bad shape, had the glass, the tires, everything on them.
00:15:49.000 They said the city came and took everything that you own.
00:15:51.000 Yes.
00:15:52.000 Well, they took everything in the yard.
00:15:53.000 Yes.
00:15:54.000 When did they do this?
00:15:55.000 Well, they should have taken it.
00:15:57.000 What they caused in the back room when the roof caved in, out and repaired it.
00:16:03.000 They caused the roof to cave in?
00:16:05.000 Yes.
00:16:09.000 Bill Steele, I believe, pulled the eaves off of my house.
00:16:13.000 Now, he may have had help.
00:16:14.000 It's all in the report I've turned into the city, and here it comes again.
00:16:20.000 The last time we talked to him about this matter, they said, we're not going to do that anymore because they knew they were illegal.
00:16:27.000 And the lawyer, the attorney general, the FBI, and several other people, they gave me reference to call.
00:16:37.000 I called them.
00:16:38.000 Now it's all happening over again.
00:16:41.000 And they said they weren't going to do that anymore.
00:16:46.000 I'm trying to get legal help.
00:16:49.000 The lawyers don't want to come out here.
00:16:52.000 I don't know why.
00:16:53.000 I can't go there.
00:16:54.000 I have everything delivered here.
00:16:56.000 You don't have a car because they took your cars.
00:16:58.000 It's not the car.
00:17:02.000 This is embarrassing.
00:17:05.000 My prostates are enlarged because I'm 73 years old and I have to urinate frequently and go to the bathroom and have access to it.
00:17:13.000 No, I understand.
00:17:13.000 I understand.
00:17:14.000 That's a common problem.
00:17:18.000 So, they've been harassing you for 20 years.
00:17:21.000 You've lived here since 1959, and now they've seized your property by saying that you caused damage to others, but nobody else lives there.
00:17:28.000 This is your property.
00:17:29.000 I haven't caused damage to anyone or harm to anyone.
00:17:32.000 They had to prove harm because it's here and the other from county court.
00:17:36.000 It's over their head.
00:17:38.000 The damage they caused and complaining about, they caused.
00:17:41.000 And if there's any violations of that, they're the cause of the violations, not me.
00:17:47.000 But I'm the one who's being punished and made look bad over the matter.
00:17:51.000 Now, who is the person that sent you the letter who caused the damage?
00:17:55.000 The city council, building people.
00:18:01.000 Inspectors?
00:18:01.000 Yeah.
00:18:02.000 They're the ones who, I have a whole C-version box of vertical envelopes from them for the past 20 years.
00:18:12.000 Is there any way that you can bring that out and just show us a few of the documents?
00:18:17.000 Sure, sure.
00:18:17.000 Let's do that.
00:18:18.000 Fantastic.
00:18:21.000 Oh, y'all are about to buy this house.
00:18:23.000 Oh, okay.
00:18:24.000 We don't want to harass y'all.
00:18:25.000 We're not about to buy it, just looking.
00:18:26.000 Well, there's this old vet here, World War II Anchoria vet, fully disabled.
00:18:31.000 And the city came out and said that he had fixed his house improperly, tore the roof off.
00:18:35.000 He even has the letters from him.
00:18:36.000 He's bringing them out now.
00:18:39.000 We just got an AXS TV show, and we're going to fix it, and then KI is also here.
00:18:43.000 We call them out here.
00:18:44.000 So y'all are going to fix the roof?
00:18:45.000 We're going to fix this house.
00:18:47.000 So this is the letters you've gotten over the past 20 years from the city.
00:18:55.000 This is incredible.
00:18:58.000 Can I look at some of the earlier ones?
00:18:59.000 You can look at all of them.
00:19:01.000 They're all about the same.
00:19:09.000 I mean, you can.
00:19:12.000 This is incredible.
00:19:14.000 This is from the city of Austin, going back 20 years, and you lived here over 20 years before that.
00:19:21.000 I've been here 40 years.
00:19:23.000 40 years.
00:19:24.000 And this is your rights in court, and this is the case.
00:19:30.000 Same case.
00:19:31.000 And here you have it.
00:19:34.000 This particular one goes way back to 86. And they're fining you, and it's talking about the tickets and the status.
00:19:44.000 This is just horrible, but you've beaten them every time over 20 years.
00:19:48.000 I haven't beaten them.
00:19:49.000 There's been four acquittals and four guilties, I think, but the guilties are invalid.
00:19:55.000 They can't stand because of the first acquittal.
00:19:58.000 And I hired a lawyer.
00:20:01.000 I notified Bell Eye in California about the matter.
00:20:06.000 They recommended the best.
00:20:07.000 A constitutional lawyer I could get.
00:20:10.000 The reference here in town was Ritter, and he didn't want to handle that, so he gave it to Lee, his assistant.
00:20:18.000 And it's in the report I turned into the city, and I gave the radio program that you heard about last night, 42, time 42. I gave them a copy of...
00:20:32.000 The report made to the Attorney General and the FBI and the city.
00:20:38.000 Can we have a copy of that?
00:20:40.000 Don't have any more copies?
00:20:41.000 I've got down to two copies.
00:20:43.000 I need to make some more copies, but I will give you a copy.
00:20:45.000 Tell you what, if you'll give us your next to last copy, we'll bring you back some.
00:20:48.000 All right.
00:20:49.000 You can trust us.
00:20:50.000 But I straighten things out, and I have a little trouble locating it, but...
00:20:55.000 I understand.
00:20:55.000 All right.
00:20:56.000 As soon as I can find it, I can...
00:20:57.000 Oh, no, take your time.
00:20:58.000 I understand.
00:20:58.000 All right.
00:20:59.000 We're going to get out of your way soon and let you talk to these guys from KI. It's very important...
00:21:06.000 Hold on just a second.
00:21:08.000 I'm going to put this up so I don't lose it, so I don't mess it up for you.
00:21:12.000 How about...
00:21:13.000 Now, you know, really, all that would be necessary to not accept my mode of living too much.
00:21:21.000 We're going to have a contractor come out here.
00:21:25.000 We're going to get with some citizens.
00:21:27.000 I assure you we're not just blowing smoke at you.
00:21:29.000 We're going to come out here and we're going to fix this to our best ability to keep the elements out since the city tore your roof off.
00:21:35.000 That's fine.
00:21:36.000 Just enough to get the city off my back about it.
00:21:39.000 And it'll probably be hard to satisfy them.
00:21:41.000 If you've been fighting it for 20 years and here's the evidence...
00:21:44.000 Right here, just a mass of letters.
00:21:46.000 In fact, you might get a shot of this.
00:21:48.000 Going back over 20 years, they've obviously got it out for you, sir.
00:21:53.000 And so I certainly hope that we can fix this to their specifications.
00:21:58.000 But I think that we're going to be able to do that.
00:22:00.000 We can prop up those walls from the inside and put a new roof on for you.
00:22:03.000 And we'll do the best job we can, okay?
00:22:05.000 Yes, I appreciate that.
00:22:09.000 If the city...
00:22:15.000 No, we're not taking a dime from you, sir.
00:22:18.000 Now what does the city owe you?
00:22:20.000 Well, they owe me the fines they find me plus the interest on them, which would be the true value of the money, cents.
00:22:28.000 And they did that when I was getting 12% from First Texas, which isn't in business anymore.
00:22:35.000 How did they destroy your roof?
00:22:37.000 That's interesting.
00:22:38.000 They pulled the eaves off the ends of the rafters.
00:22:42.000 They pulled every one of them off they could pull off.
00:22:46.000 Why on earth would the city inspectors come here and pull the eaves off your structure that are the corner points?
00:22:52.000 Well, again, you said there must have been bias toward me.
00:22:59.000 Bill Steele says, when I won my Was this over the telephone?
00:23:24.000 What's his name one more time, the man that threatened a World War II and Korean veteran?
00:23:29.000 Bill Steele.
00:23:30.000 He was a building inspector then.
00:23:32.000 I don't know whether he still is or not.
00:23:33.000 Bill Steele?
00:23:34.000 Right.
00:23:35.000 He came and tore the eaves off your house and now your roof caved in.
00:23:39.000 The ends of the rafters.
00:23:41.000 They're called eaves also.
00:23:43.000 He tore off the connective points.
00:23:46.000 What was his rationale for doing that?
00:23:48.000 When I bought this house, it wasn't in the best condition.
00:23:51.000 Perhaps it shouldn't have been sold the way it was.
00:23:53.000 The roof leaked and all.
00:23:54.000 I repaired the roof, but I had neglected to realize that the eaves were rottening on the ends, I guess.
00:24:02.000 I mean, it didn't seem like they were, but I guess with him throwing something over and pulling down on them, they came off.
00:24:08.000 Why on earth would a building inspector vandalize your property?
00:24:11.000 Well, now, he shouldn't have done that.
00:24:13.000 He should have told me about it, so I could have done something about it.
00:24:16.000 Oh, excuse me, he trespassed on your private property and tore your eaves off?
00:24:20.000 Oh, that's what it adds up to, yes.
00:24:23.000 You know, with the airport moving, your property's going to be worth a lot more.
00:24:27.000 Well, it is, and I have mineral rights, and you can't get those somewhere else.
00:24:32.000 And I own this property.
00:24:33.000 I know it's not in a tornado path.
00:24:35.000 I don't want to move.
00:24:37.000 They're telling me that I don't have any place to move to, but I really don't want to move.
00:24:43.000 I want to stay here.
00:24:45.000 Sir, don't you worry.
00:24:46.000 You just found the friends you need.
00:24:47.000 We hate government.
00:24:48.000 We hate big government.
00:24:49.000 We fight big government.
00:24:51.000 We're going to fix this house.
00:24:52.000 There'll be a bunch of people out here Tuesday.
00:24:54.000 If the bulldozer's trying, I'm going to jail.
00:24:56.000 We're going to stop them.
00:24:56.000 We're going to fix this house.
00:24:57.000 Most of it support the walls by Tuesday.
00:25:00.000 Then we'll put another roof on here for you.
00:25:03.000 All right.
00:25:03.000 The slab has...
00:25:06.000 Cracked and given away some.
00:25:07.000 They don't have to worry about it inside.
00:25:10.000 We know the city will try to kick you out for that as well, but at that point, it just comes down to self-defense, doesn't it?
00:25:15.000 Yes, and I do need to contact Bell Eye again, and I may have to try this out of state if I can't get a fair trial here.
00:25:23.000 You don't have time.
00:25:24.000 I know I won't have time, and I'll have to sue them if they do destroy my property, and I really don't want to move.
00:25:34.000 My mode of living is here.
00:25:36.000 And you've lived here since 59. How many houses were on this street in 59?
00:25:41.000 It's approximately the same.
00:25:42.000 It hasn't changed that much.
00:25:44.000 This place had an additional second story built on it through the years.
00:25:49.000 Well, we talked to your neighbors, and most of your neighbors seemed to like you.
00:25:52.000 Some neighbors wouldn't talk to us, but your next-door neighbors say you're very quiet and never complain about them.
00:25:57.000 That's true.
00:25:58.000 I don't bother anyone.
00:25:59.000 I've never harmed anyone.
00:26:01.000 I'm on your own business.
00:26:03.000 I say hello, you know, and I'm friendly.
00:26:07.000 Where were you in World War II? What part of Europe?
00:26:10.000 I was in the European state of operation.
00:26:13.000 I went, I have two invasions to Sherberg, the second one and the fourth one.
00:26:17.000 I could have been killed in the first one.
00:26:18.000 They pulled us out, grabbed me under my arms and lifted me back on the bar.
00:26:24.000 You were actually involved in D-Day.
00:26:25.000 Well, it wasn't D-Day, Cherbourg.
00:26:27.000 It was after D-Day.
00:26:29.000 But it was along the coast.
00:26:31.000 Cherbourg was the last one along the coast.
00:26:34.000 You know, Normandy was first.
00:26:37.000 Lahar, they call it.
00:26:39.000 And Cherbourg was the last.
00:26:41.000 It's the whole coastline of France.
00:26:42.000 It was across the channel.
00:26:44.000 It was the D-Day invasion is when it was.
00:26:46.000 And that's where I was.
00:26:48.000 And you've minded your own business for 40 years here and for 20 years.
00:26:52.000 And here's the evidence right here.
00:26:54.000 They've been harassing you.
00:26:57.000 And now they destroyed your roof on purpose.
00:26:59.000 Well, this is just incredible.
00:27:00.000 This is exactly what I'm talking about.
00:27:02.000 Sick control freaks out here in our society want control of your life.
00:27:07.000 We're going to fix this and show government what real help is.
00:27:10.000 Not destroying a veteran's home who's got a 100% disability.
00:27:15.000 It's just sickening activity.
00:27:19.000 Thank you very much, sir.
00:27:20.000 And we'll be out here tomorrow and Monday doing some basic repairs, shuring up the walls and some other things.
00:27:27.000 We may even have to tear out that wall there, but I promise you, we will fix it.
00:27:33.000 For those that know me, I assure you, you have Alex Jones' word, we're going to stop the city.
00:27:38.000 If I have to go to jail.
00:27:39.000 Thank you, sir.
00:27:40.000 Thank you.
00:27:41.000 All right, appreciate it.
00:27:43.000 Hold on, Wally, Wally.
00:27:45.000 - Here's one here.
00:27:50.000 - Okay.
00:27:50.000 - Wow.
00:27:59.000 - Look at the plexa, I'm getting shot with them.
00:28:04.000 - Look at the plexa, I'm getting shot with them. - He's got pictures I'm getting shot with them. - He's got pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
00:28:34.000 - Oh, hold on. - If you want to turn it to the panel.
00:28:39.000 - Oh, okay.
00:28:41.000 - Sorry.
00:28:42.000 - Was that right?
00:28:43.000 - That's great.
00:28:44.000 - Sorry.
00:28:45.000 - You okay? - You don't have to do anything. - You're okay.
00:28:49.000 This is the way I live.
00:28:53.000 It's not large enough for anyone else, but it's big enough for me and my needs.
00:29:02.000 Ask me the questions and I can ask you, but I don't know exactly what information you want right now.
00:29:08.000 Right.
00:29:09.000 But the more thorough you are in telling the public about it, maybe they'll understand it properly and not...
00:29:16.000 I'm going to destroy my image because I haven't done any harm to anyone.
00:29:20.000 And it's not my negligence.
00:29:23.000 I'm doing my best to manage and it's about all I can do is to go on the way I'm going on.
00:29:31.000 One of the reasons it hasn't been changed, it was to be evident with the lawyers and I can't hardly get anyone to come out here.
00:29:41.000 They want to handle it by remote means or even out of state.
00:29:45.000 Uh, and, uh, they've been sending me, uh, insurance, legal insurance, or trying to, from other states.
00:29:53.000 And, uh, to handle this matter with lawyers, uh, I need to talk to them like I'm talking to you.
00:29:59.000 Right.
00:30:00.000 But they won't come out here.
00:30:01.000 And, uh, I wrote Bell Eye.
00:30:05.000 They told me to get the best constitutional attorney I could get here.
00:30:08.000 They recommended Jack Ritter, and he gave me Lee, and the reports in the account which, uh, It tells what all happened in that account.
00:30:19.000 And that's the true story of what's been going on here since.
00:30:24.000 And they have performed usurpation.
00:30:34.000 They seized my property and it was here under other.
00:30:38.000 It's illegal usurpation.
00:30:40.000 Yes, it's illegal, yes.
00:30:42.000 They're illegal.
00:30:43.000 And they can't stand.
00:30:46.000 Because of the first acquittal, not guilty.
00:30:51.000 And I have, I'm entitled to shielding.
00:30:53.000 And I have all this structuring all around the heavy metal, and they're going over now.
00:31:00.000 And they took, they took all my shielding in the backyard away, except the two I-beams.
00:31:15.000 So what is it you like about being here?
00:31:18.000 Why do you like being here?
00:31:20.000 The weather's not too severe.
00:31:23.000 It's a nice state with a nice climate most of the year around.
00:31:27.000 There's only a couple of weeks in the summer that's 110 in the shade, and there's only a couple of weeks in the winter that it's severe cold without freezing.
00:31:36.000 And we were lucky this year.
00:31:37.000 I don't think it's going to be any worse.
00:31:40.000 What about this house in particular?
00:31:42.000 What do you like about your house?
00:31:43.000 What I like about my house?
00:31:45.000 It's my liberty, my freedom, and my pursuit of happiness, and all my constitutional rights.
00:31:51.000 And I like it here because we're not in a tornado path, and the climate here is safe on the map.
00:31:58.000 If you look at all the disasters on the map, I'm sitting about the safest place, other than these aircrafts that are flying over, that you could pick on the map to avoid natural disasters.
00:32:11.000 And that's why I like it here.
00:32:16.000 Go ahead and ask me.
00:32:19.000 Now, you were part of the D-Day invasion.
00:32:22.000 Could you tell us a little bit about the trauma that that created and also your military full disabilities that you got and how you feel safe here?
00:32:34.000 Alright.
00:32:35.000 You were talking about being against the government and doing things wrong.
00:32:42.000 One thing that created my disability worse was I was railroaded in California trying to see about a job 20th century after talking to LaFonto at the KTBC when I was going to professional radio and television school at Spears Professional Radio and Television School.
00:33:02.000 I was falsely arrested and I was kept till Saturday.
00:33:09.000 I was arrested Friday morning.
00:33:12.000 It was the night before Friday.
00:33:16.000 I was supposed to be there at 8 o'clock.
00:33:18.000 I talked to the guard at the gate and showed them the note to see about a job.
00:33:25.000 I was falsely arrested.
00:33:28.000 I only had bread and water with the local police at Santa Monica.
00:33:32.000 They later refunded the fine.
00:33:35.000 What happened in the meantime was I come out of there droggy with nothing more as eating bread and water since Friday morning, and I missed getting onto the Los Angeles Freeway to Long Beach where I lived, you know, when I was over there seeing about a job.
00:33:52.000 And I didn't get to phone my folks because I thought I would go down the freeway the other direction.
00:34:02.000 Take the next cloverleaf off of it and return, you know, across the business.
00:34:06.000 And so you missed your interview?
00:34:08.000 You missed your job interview?
00:34:11.000 Yes, I missed my job interview.
00:34:12.000 Can you tell us a little bit about your World War II? That's very interesting.
00:34:15.000 You want my World War II experience?
00:34:17.000 All right, but the point was, under Goodwin 39th, the total turnistic seizure of me and railroading of me ended me up in Camarillo where they gave me shock treatment.
00:34:27.000 And I had to escape the swamp until I died.
00:34:32.000 Brentwood brought me back.
00:34:33.000 The VA brought me back there.
00:34:36.000 In my war experiences, I highlight one of the highlights.
00:34:43.000 You want the combat or do you want other things?
00:34:47.000 Basically, just tell us what battles you were in.
00:34:51.000 I'm sorry, guys.
00:34:52.000 I was in Bastogne as a medic coming in after most of them were frozen to death.
00:35:02.000 Start over one more time.
00:35:03.000 I'm sorry, go ahead.
00:35:04.000 I'm speaking too fast.
00:35:05.000 No, no, no.
00:35:07.000 We don't want to make you nervous.
00:35:07.000 You're doing a great job.
00:35:12.000 I'm good at making people nervous.
00:35:14.000 Yes, he is.
00:35:18.000 Oh, yeah.
00:35:20.000 Puts people on the spot.
00:35:22.000 Just a companion.
00:35:23.000 He was a lot of stuff earlier about how they tore his roof off.
00:35:27.000 I can name the battles for you if I remember that.
00:35:29.000 Well, just basically tell us what you've done in the military and how it's terrible now this is happening to you.
00:35:34.000 What I did in the military?
00:35:36.000 Let me ask you this.
00:35:37.000 Can I ask him a question?
00:35:38.000 Is that okay?
00:35:38.000 You got what you needed, right?
00:35:39.000 I'll shut up.
00:35:40.000 No, no, no, no.
00:35:40.000 I don't mean that.
00:35:41.000 He's going to kill me.
00:35:41.000 No, I'm just trying to focus one thing.
00:35:43.000 I'm sorry.
00:35:43.000 No, don't be sorry.
00:35:45.000 I mean, what about your military experience?
00:35:48.000 I guess it's something you can never forget.
00:35:51.000 Well, that's true.
00:35:53.000 I don't want to forget it.
00:35:54.000 It's there to learn from.
00:35:56.000 But what about it?
00:35:57.000 What experience did you have that stuck with you?
00:36:00.000 Well, I saved many lives as a medic.
00:36:03.000 Intensive cases, the worst ones were burned from black tank people who came out of tanks, their face all burnt.
00:36:11.000 We saved their lives.
00:36:13.000 And many of them wrote my books after the war.
00:36:16.000 Or during the war, I guess the hospitals gave them my address.
00:36:21.000 They wrote my mother.
00:36:22.000 She's proud of the letters stating that they expressed their gratitude for us medics overseas saving their lives.
00:36:31.000 And I think the worst battle was Nuremberg, but our government didn't give that any credit.
00:36:42.000 And when they tell it, it's like it didn't happen.
00:36:46.000 And we didn't get a Battlestar for that.
00:36:48.000 I have four Battlestars, but I was in eight different battles during the war.
00:36:53.000 I can name them to you.
00:36:55.000 It was Sherberg twice, Bastogne.
00:37:00.000 We had Essent, Aachen, and Cologne.
00:37:02.000 Had to go back to Brussels, and the V-2 missiles were coming down and over the railroad yards and exploding.
00:37:09.000 We nearly buttered our brains.
00:37:12.000 I was ducking under the table to get out of the way, the guy on the opposite side of me.
00:37:16.000 We got to the same height at the same time, the bomb was coming down, the buzz bomb, you know, sputtering out, coming down.
00:37:23.000 We dove under the table, we just butted heads under the table, and it nearly busted our skull.
00:37:29.000 We almost killed ourselves.
00:37:30.000 It shook the train and broke some glass in it, but that's all it did.
00:37:34.000 And then we got out of Russell's after that.
00:37:40.000 I remember those events, and there were 88s coming over, even when it was at Reims, and we nearly froze to that.
00:37:49.000 Some of the guys lost their fingers and toes and nose, and then they took them away in ambulance.
00:37:55.000 We don't know whether they lived or not.
00:37:56.000 A lot of them died from freezing.
00:37:59.000 They had enlisted men unloading the trucks with the supplies, and the officers and the top sergeants were in a round of...
00:38:08.000 We had a bomb fire and they didn't let the workers come into the fire.
00:38:17.000 We were in a blizzard at that time and the trucks were stuck in the mud through to their axle and it couldn't move them so we had to unload them.
00:38:27.000 When the weather was too severe, they kind of let our work go, so we took some blankets and stuff and crawled in with the artillery and dug out.
00:38:37.000 They lined with empty shell cases and we had some blankets, and we had the blankets, cardboard from the sea rations and blankets over the shells.
00:38:47.000 You were also involved in a quarry?
00:38:49.000 Oh yes, I was at Seoul, Korea.
00:38:52.000 Secretary of State Dean Atkinson was nearly killed.
00:38:55.000 He was in a crash.
00:38:57.000 I could have been killed myself three different times.
00:39:01.000 There were other men that were shot up at the MS Hall with an assault gun.
00:39:10.000 And maybe I'm not supposed to be telling these things because the government has put a gag on them and kept them secret.
00:39:19.000 But anyway, I did manage to save Secretary of State Dean Atkinson's life at the threat of my own.
00:39:30.000 He was unconscious, so he didn't know about it, I guess.
00:39:34.000 And the people there at the base really owed back the wrong information that I had done wrong instead of right, and they were wrong.
00:39:46.000 And when they come out to the aircraft when we arrived, they told me I was under arrest, house arrest.
00:39:53.000 The aircraft commander came back and he told them.
00:39:56.000 They don't know what they're talking about.
00:39:58.000 Don't pay any attention to them.
00:39:59.000 Well, that's a very interesting story.
00:40:01.000 I'll quit bugging y'all.
00:40:03.000 But who was it that tore the roof off?
00:40:07.000 The roof caved in after the rafters were pulled off.
00:40:11.000 And who pulled the rafters off?
00:40:14.000 Now, I don't know who because they had me down at municipal court and they do these things behind my back.
00:40:20.000 They sabotaged my car behind my back when it was down at Municipal Court.
00:40:24.000 They kicked my door in off with the hinges, the back hinges.
00:40:28.000 It was locked.
00:40:29.000 They kicked the door in, came in.
00:40:31.000 They drilled a hole in my boiler.
00:40:33.000 I didn't know it was in there until later, and I bought a new compressor for it, and then I learned there was a hole in the boiler.
00:40:39.000 They did something to my Frederick air conditioner.
00:40:42.000 I don't know what it was.
00:40:43.000 They went through all my papers.
00:40:45.000 They ran off of my Tidal Tamarismobile and my...
00:40:48.000 My CDs, the bank made my CDs good.
00:40:52.000 I don't, like you said, about police state totalitarianism.
00:40:58.000 You showed us your information.
00:40:59.000 Well, thank you so much.
00:41:00.000 I'm sorry to keep bugging me.
00:41:01.000 No, you're not bugging me.
00:41:02.000 I know I made those day of living hell here.
00:41:03.000 No, not at all.
00:41:04.000 I just get really fired up about this.
00:41:06.000 He actually showed us the letters.
00:41:07.000 Can we go look back at those letters and read some of that?
00:41:10.000 They're outside.
00:41:10.000 They're outside.
00:41:12.000 We left them on the table.
00:41:15.000 No, no.
00:41:16.000 It looks wonderful.
00:41:18.000 This is better in the darker, though.
00:41:20.000 One or the other.
00:41:21.000 The jury summons?
00:41:24.000 The plans used to be the things I had was shielding.
00:41:30.000 I'd never hear them better.
00:41:31.000 And they were calling it other things than cue.
00:41:36.000 And of course the clover I grow, they're called weeds, and they're not weeds, and I canned those, harvest those.
00:41:49.000 Now, you see, it isn't a zoning violation, because...
00:41:54.000 This is just one letter, and there's like five different things.
00:41:56.000 All right, there's a first acquittal, you know.
00:41:57.000 $2,000?
00:41:59.000 Yes.
00:41:59.000 Oh, God.
00:42:00.000 What in the world's debt for?
00:42:02.000 That was for two things.
00:42:04.000 My cars, which are called a zoning violation, which it was not, and what they called debris and stuff, which really isn't.
00:42:13.000 It was shielding.
00:42:15.000 And, of course, I grow clover, and I can it, and I guess they call that grass and weeds.
00:42:22.000 All right.
00:42:24.000 But don't let these blow away.
00:42:26.000 It's included, so they can find it, I guess.
00:42:29.000 Yeah, show me that grass and weeds part, because we've got a story on that.
00:42:31.000 Well, I don't think it says grass and weeds, but it should be.
00:42:34.000 It said other objectionable material?
00:42:36.000 Yeah, other objectionable material.
00:42:38.000 Yeah, that's right.
00:42:38.000 We've seen that before.
00:42:40.000 All right.
00:42:40.000 Y'all think this is bad.
00:42:41.000 You ought to see Roland Ellings said nothing wrong with his house.
00:42:43.000 Good house.
00:42:44.000 Wood floors, the whole nine yards, three-inch grass, real fancy area over off West, what, 37?
00:42:49.000 And they're pining him for grass?
00:42:52.000 I got the thing.
00:42:53.000 We did it a year and a half ago, but he got it from out of court.
00:42:55.000 He made it out.
00:42:57.000 They had him for 20 days, lean $2,000 a day.
00:43:00.000 He owed them, like, they were going to reduce it down to $10,000.
00:43:03.000 Great, thanks.
00:43:05.000 Well, do you all want this?
00:43:07.000 It's $2,000 right here.
00:43:11.000 We're all about the same.
00:43:13.000 Objectionable material, zoning violation, in-mobile vehicle on his own property out on the street.
00:43:20.000 And then we've got one...
00:43:21.000 When was that?
00:43:23.000 This was in 86. I mean, he goes back 20 years.
00:43:27.000 That's what he's saying.
00:43:28.000 In fact, I just opened one letter.
00:43:30.000 Open all of them you like.
00:43:31.000 Well, that's the problem.
00:43:32.000 I know you guys know.
00:43:33.000 I've got to do a radio show for four hours.
00:43:34.000 We've got two radio shows today.
00:43:38.000 One out of the studio.
00:43:40.000 I'm sorry.
00:44:14.000 Let's see if I can figure out a way to...
00:44:43.000 Go for it.
00:45:13.000 Go for it.
00:46:40.000 People have just been donating everything from the entire electrical systems, doors, windows, thousands of dollars of lumber.
00:46:47.000 How does it feel to see...
00:46:49.000 Awesome.
00:46:50.000 This is the best thing.
00:46:51.000 I'm so glad that we seized this opportunity to help Joe get his place in order.
00:46:55.000 I can't believe that the city's not out here getting behind us and supporting us.
00:47:02.000 These are all volunteers.
00:47:05.000 These aren't any city people out here.
00:47:07.000 But it's great that we're taking this opportunity to do this for him.
00:47:10.000 The guy served in World War II, and this is long overdue.
00:47:15.000 That's how I feel about it.
00:47:16.000 And you hope the city doesn't bulldoze it.
00:47:17.000 No, I don't want to see this place bulldozed.
00:47:19.000 No, no.
00:47:19.000 We don't want to let that happen.
00:47:20.000 I think that would be a disgrace.
00:47:23.000 That would be a shame to do that to this man's property.
00:47:26.000 He doesn't want to leave.
00:47:26.000 He just wants a decent place to live.
00:47:28.000 He doesn't want his house bulldozed.
00:47:29.000 He wants to stay right here.
00:47:31.000 And I think we owe him that.
00:47:33.000 And that's just how I feel about it.
00:47:35.000 And I'm glad to have this opportunity to be here to help him.
00:47:38.000 Hey, thank you very much, buddy.
00:47:39.000 Thank you.
00:47:40.000 Hey, Brian, does it feel good to be involved in something like this?
00:47:43.000 Yeah, it feels real good.
00:47:45.000 I think...
00:47:46.000 It really shows how the American spirit hasn't gone.
00:47:49.000 You know, it hasn't really left.
00:47:50.000 There's still some good people in this country.
00:47:52.000 And to see this old man who's fought in a war in World War II, one of the biggest, you know, for us to come out here and help him is really great, you know.
00:48:03.000 Absolutely.
00:48:04.000 Thank you for talking to us, buddy.
00:48:05.000 Appreciate it.
00:48:07.000 We have an interconnecting lock.
00:48:09.000 Okay.
00:48:10.000 Okay, we need to see.
00:48:13.000 Okay.
00:48:13.000 You don't want to be interviewed.
00:48:15.000 Has anybody brought up a court to treat prisoners and prisoners?
00:48:18.000 No, just leave it right here.
00:48:19.000 I'll get it.
00:48:20.000 Hey, here, talk to us.
00:48:21.000 I just think it's interesting that they treat prisoners with more respect and care more about their rights and their concerns and their health issues than people that are retired and disabled and veterans of foreign wars.
00:48:32.000 It's ridiculous.
00:48:34.000 You have to remember, criminals are important to wreak havoc.
00:48:37.000 Yeah, that's part of order out of chaos.
00:48:39.000 If they'd lock them up and said, letting them go, we wouldn't have the problems we have today, and we wouldn't need this huge police force.
00:48:44.000 It's all an excuse.
00:48:47.000 They let convicted murderers out.
00:48:50.000 They go and kill again, and they're surprised.
00:48:52.000 It's ridiculous.
00:48:53.000 At the same time, nonviolent people are spending more time.
00:48:56.000 And people that are in there for nonviolent offenses, the three strikes thing for, like, small-time drug dealers.
00:49:03.000 I mean, you know, if the government wouldn't bring the drugs in, there wouldn't be a problem.
00:49:07.000 Great point, sir.
00:49:08.000 Thank you.
00:49:08.000 Let's go talk to Lewis.
00:49:13.000 Councilmember Lewis, good to see you again.
00:49:14.000 Good to have lunch with you.
00:49:15.000 Hey, we appreciate you coming out and supporting us in what we're doing and hoping to get him out of that dangerous structure and get him into this new one.
00:49:23.000 Well, that's the same thing the city tried to do before, and, you know, he refused to let them build one before some time ago.
00:49:31.000 I don't know exactly when, but...
00:49:34.000 What about...
00:49:36.000 People are taking this opportunity to help their neighbors.
00:49:40.000 He has a letter that he actually was offered that, and then it seems that that person that offered it to him from the city was no longer there.
00:49:50.000 Well, I don't know.
00:49:51.000 I wasn't there tonight.
00:49:52.000 I understand you're a new council member.
00:49:54.000 Well, thanks for coming out.
00:49:55.000 Does it make you feel good to see all these folks out here?
00:49:57.000 They said it was about 40 out here.
00:49:59.000 I talked to 42 today, and they said it was about 42 people out here earlier.
00:50:04.000 I mean, about 40 people or so earlier.
00:50:06.000 We've had over 100 since 8 o'clock this morning.
00:50:08.000 A lot of folks had to go.
00:50:10.000 Have you seen all the lumber we've got?
00:50:13.000 He just gave me a tour of it and was explaining to me what process they're going to do next week.
00:50:20.000 We'll get started on getting the permit in the morning.
00:50:24.000 God bless you, sir.
00:50:25.000 Thank you very much.
00:50:26.000 That's Councilmember Lewis doing the decent thing.
00:50:31.000 There were like 100 people here over the day or over.
00:50:34.000 I mean, just everybody from church groups to people in the building trades to just anybody who felt that they could hear.
00:50:41.000 I'm just glad that it happened.
00:50:43.000 Right.
00:50:44.000 How do you think it's all going to play out?
00:50:47.000 Well, you know, it only has one way to go, and that's up.
00:50:51.000 I don't see anything that would play out any different.
00:50:56.000 I mean, they're going to apply for a permit in the morning.
00:50:59.000 It shouldn't take, but it should be something that would be done.
00:51:04.000 The inspectors come out and people will be able to go on.
00:51:09.000 This is a situation that requires some deviation.
00:51:14.000 You're not going to spend the six weeks or two months or whatever going through the permit process.
00:51:21.000 I think it will play out to everyone's benefit and everyone's hope and desire.
00:51:28.000 You know, I've been working with the Travis County Veteran Affairs.
00:51:35.000 So, you know, me being a veteran, you know, I have some...
00:51:43.000 There's a lot of veterans here today.
00:51:45.000 Oh, yeah.
00:51:46.000 Yeah, that's what I understand.
00:51:47.000 I was talking to Susan from Channel 42, and she said it was quite a few, and I expect as soon as the word get out, it'll be a lot more.
00:51:56.000 Yeah, yeah.
00:51:57.000 Now, let's break here for a second and let the plane go over.
00:52:00.000 Yeah.
00:52:01.000 It's only about three or four more months.
00:52:06.000 That's right.
00:52:06.000 Fifteen weeks.
00:52:07.000 Fifteen weeks until the airport goes.
00:52:09.000 A hundred and seven days and these planes won't be doing this no more.
00:52:13.000 No, no, no, no, no.
00:52:16.000 Completely close.
00:52:16.000 No more airplanes.
00:52:21.000 Sir, can we ask you, how do you feel about all this activity in your front yard today?
00:52:26.000 Nothing like this ever happened to me before in my life.
00:52:29.000 I am so proud of you people being real Americans and showing what you believe is right and you are right about the matter.
00:52:41.000 Sir, you lived here how many years?
00:52:44.000 Forty years.
00:52:46.000 Forty years.
00:52:46.000 I moved here in 1959. This is 1999. Your house is a little run down.
00:52:54.000 Could use a few repairs, but it looks like they're going to build you in a brand new house in your front yard.
00:53:00.000 Is that your understanding?
00:53:02.000 That's what they're doing, and they're doing it so rapidly, I didn't know they could do it that fast.
00:53:07.000 And what will happen to the house you're living in right now, sir?
00:53:10.000 Well, I want to save it as long as any aircraft are flying over.
00:53:15.000 Okay.
00:53:16.000 I might not need it so bad if there aren't any more aircraft, but I could still use it for storage.
00:53:24.000 And it gives me more room to have a hobby and something.
00:53:28.000 But it's no danger to anyone else.
00:53:31.000 It's false.
00:53:32.000 It's exaggeration.
00:53:33.000 It's hyper-blowing.
00:53:35.000 No one has been harmed in 20 years that I've lived here.
00:53:37.000 Are you glad that the bulldozers have been stopped for the time being?
00:53:40.000 Boy, do I. Do I. Yes, I do.
00:53:44.000 This is the most encouraging thing I've heard, that they're not going to destroy it now, I hope.
00:53:49.000 Now, yesterday on KI, you acted a little bit surprised and said, is this for real?
00:53:52.000 Well, actually, let this plane roll over.
00:53:54.000 Hold on one second, sir, let the plane go over.
00:53:56.000 Yesterday on KI, you were a little bit skeptic about what me and Mike came out and told you, weren't you?
00:54:04.000 Yes.
00:54:06.000 I don't know what was up.
00:54:10.000 And now you've got a house half-built and all the fixtures and doors.
00:54:14.000 I'm astounded by it.
00:54:17.000 It's amazing, right?
00:54:18.000 We're going to crush the New World Order.
00:54:21.000 You guys are great.
00:54:23.000 You're great guys, right?
00:54:24.000 Now, you had mentioned you wanted to keep this house up as long as the airplanes keep flying over.
00:54:29.000 You are aware that this airport, Robert Miller Airport, is going to completely close down in 15 weeks.
00:54:35.000 They're going to put state office buildings out there, and there won't be any airplanes flowing over in this neighborhood in about 15 weeks.
00:54:40.000 Well, that'll improve the value of the property.
00:54:42.000 Yes.
00:54:42.000 In fact, some people were thinking that because the property value is going up...
00:54:46.000 Oh, yes.
00:54:47.000 ...that they're interested in your property.
00:54:49.000 They're running off with plans, telling us we better not build.
00:54:52.000 And now the council member comes out, they say it's fine, we're allowed to do this.
00:54:56.000 And we're doing it according to permits.
00:54:57.000 That's what I said this morning, Jim, is that we've constructed it, we've built it, but we haven't poured the concrete.
00:55:05.000 We've got all the basics ready to go, the foundation ready to go, all the superstructure built, and now it's just like assembling a Lego set.
00:55:13.000 All it takes is the permits and we're go.
00:55:15.000 Of course, you have no interest in leaving your home of 40 years, right?
00:55:19.000 I don't want to leave here.
00:55:20.000 I like it here.
00:55:21.000 I know the climate's mild, and it's not in a hurricane path, and it's a safe place to live, except the city has aggravated me for 20 years about this matter.
00:55:31.000 He has 20 years of documents.
00:55:33.000 We'll show you, Jim, and KLBJ. I'm Pascal.
00:55:36.000 There's nothing wrong with this.
00:55:37.000 Hey, how are you doing?
00:55:38.000 Good to meet you.
00:55:40.000 Nice to meet you, Alex.
00:55:40.000 Most of you people, it shows you are great people.
00:55:43.000 Yeah.
00:55:43.000 But this municipal business they've been given.
00:55:47.000 Well, thank you.
00:55:48.000 It just makes me sick of my stomach.
00:55:50.000 I have.
00:55:50.000 And you can understand that.
00:55:53.000 Yeah.
00:55:54.000 Oh, yeah.
00:55:54.000 Well, I live just one block away and had seen your house for many years.
00:55:59.000 It's a little concerned.
00:56:00.000 I could use a little fixing up, but I could see why you wouldn't want your home bulldozed and be run out, and I have to say I'm equally amazed.
00:56:09.000 At this construction and the speed of it and the number of people, it's really a groundswell.
00:56:14.000 Look what numbers can do when a hundred people working on it.
00:56:19.000 Look in one day how much you've got accomplished.
00:56:21.000 Well, we've got to thank K.I. and we've got to thank all these people that showed up.
00:56:24.000 Yes, I wish to express my eternal gratitude.
00:56:30.000 I don't know how to say it other than that.
00:56:33.000 But if you have a charity, I'm going to contribute to that.
00:56:36.000 I don't have a charity.
00:56:37.000 Alex Jones and Mike Hansen and Steve Lane just want to get out here and help you.
00:56:41.000 And at the same time, showing there's decent people out there, all these veterans, all these families, men, women, children out here working.
00:56:47.000 That's it.
00:56:48.000 You're going to have a new house by Sunday if the city doesn't come in here and bulldoze what we're doing.
00:56:51.000 If they give us the permits, and Willie Lewis has agreed.
00:56:54.000 So we're going forward.
00:56:54.000 If you can just get the rest of the council to back off.
00:56:57.000 You're going to have a first-rate little house, little cottage.
00:57:00.000 All right.
00:57:01.000 Thank you, sir.
00:57:02.000 Enjoy your Sunday.
00:57:04.000 Take care, buddy.
00:57:05.000 Show him again.
00:57:07.000 You're shaking.
00:57:10.000 Hi, Jim.
00:57:11.000 How are you?
00:57:15.000 All right.
00:57:18.000 I'm going to sing a little song right now, and I'm going to play it on this guitar that was given to me by Mr. Joe Campana.
00:57:24.000 I love it.
00:57:25.000 It's a little Sears-A-Robot.
00:57:26.000 It's my new favorite guitar.
00:57:27.000 All of that guitar.
00:57:29.000 All of that guitar.
00:57:31.000 Yeah.
00:57:31.000 Come and listen to the story about a man named Joe.
00:57:41.000 The city council said, Joe, your house has got to go.
00:57:47.000 K.I. News put the story on their show.
00:57:51.000 And out came the black helicopter people.
00:57:57.000 The kooks, that is.
00:57:59.000 The so-called anti-government right-wing conspiracy nuts.
00:58:06.000 The call went out for to save Joe's home.
00:58:11.000 The SOS was shouted out by Mr. Alex Jones.
00:58:16.000 Patriots came and they did all they could do to help to save this hero of World War II. The big one, that is.
00:58:28.000 Joe was a junior in high school with a farm exclusion and an only child exclusion when they drafted him and tested the atomic bomb on him.
00:58:38.000 The next thing you know, old Joe's yard was filled with friendly volunteers and materials to build.
00:58:47.000 They said, we're gonna help you and you will not have to leave your silver painted trailer or the comforts you need.
00:58:57.000 The comforts of home, you see.
00:58:59.000 Whatever they may be, their private property, a man's castle, or supposed to be.
00:59:07.000 And now it's time to say a thanks to Joe and all his friends.
00:59:12.000 And we would like to thank you folks for kindly pitching in.
00:59:16.000 And thanks for coming out for barbecue that Saturday.
00:59:21.000 To have a heaping helping of our hospitality.
00:59:27.000 American hospitality, that is.
00:59:29.000 It was all made and born in the USA, just like our new American hero, Mr. Joe Campana.
00:59:34.000 And Austin Ved is moving into his new home today.
01:00:04.000 KI has followed Austin volunteers as they help build new dreams for Joe Campana.
01:00:09.000 KI's Julie Gursa joins us live from Campana's home in central Austin.
01:00:13.000 Julie, how's it look out there?
01:00:14.000 Mark, it looks really good.
01:00:15.000 Now this you're looking at is the old home at 618 East 49th.
01:00:20.000 This is how it all started.
01:00:21.000 Joe Campana, a disabled World War II and Korea vet, has been here for more than 40 years.
01:00:26.000 But the city had told him a couple of years ago he was going to have to move because they said that this home was unsafe.
01:00:32.000 Well, when people saw this story on KI and lately heard about it on a radio talk show and cable show, they decided they weren't going to stand by and let this happen.
01:00:40.000 So hundreds of volunteers have donated their time and their money, appliances, the siding you see on the house, and this.
01:00:48.000 Is what Austinites Who Care built.
01:00:50.000 And today, Joe Campana had his big moment.
01:00:55.000 Hope you enjoy your new house.
01:00:59.000 Joe got the keys to the home today.
01:01:02.000 It is a modest cottage, but this place is furnished from top to bottom.
01:01:07.000 They've donated furniture, everything in here, all down to the little details.
01:01:12.000 Now, we talked to Joe about this gift that Austinites have given him because they care so much about him, and he was very moved by what they did for him.
01:01:21.000 I'm overwhelmed.
01:01:23.000 It is the greatest thing that's ever happened to me that I can recall.
01:01:30.000 And Mark, in case you wanted to know what it looked like inside, here it is, fully furnished.
01:01:35.000 Some volunteers have been working on this for a long time.
01:01:37.000 They just happen to be in here watching.
01:01:39.000 They all can hear the cheers from outside.
01:01:42.000 They're very tired.
01:01:43.000 This has been, they did this in 13 days, a city record.
01:01:47.000 Councilman Lewis said it was a record, the time that they got the permits, but they wanted to make sure that they beat the bulldozers, and Mark, they did.
01:01:54.000 All right, Julie, that's a fantastic story.
01:01:56.000 Way to have the community get together in such a short period of time.
01:01:59.000 All right.
01:02:27.000 We're in front of Mr. Joe Capanna's house.
01:02:30.000 And I guess you can see behind me, we've got a front-end loader from a demolition company.
01:02:37.000 And they're going to scoop up Joe's old house and cart it off.
01:02:41.000 Of course we got big thunderstorms coming through maybe a omen of things to come here.
01:02:46.000 We're out here for the Unconstitutional demolition of Mr. Joe Kapanis' old house.
01:02:53.000 So we'll get it all on videotape and hope you enjoy what we do to our elderly in Austin.
01:02:59.000 A lot this size you can put about five row houses on.
01:03:03.000 So welcome to Smart Group.
01:03:06.000 Here comes a front end loader to tear it down.
01:03:24.000 Your house will be next.
01:03:25.000 Yeah, maybe you think, oh, the hell with old Joe, but here it is.
01:03:32.000 Live and in color.
01:03:33.000 Here it is, ladies and gentlemen.
01:03:35.000 This is the teeth of the government here.
01:03:37.000 The teeth of the government ready to knock down Joe's house.
01:03:41.000 Yeah, we've got a close-up of the flag flying over Joe Capanna's house.
01:03:45.000 I don't know if...
01:03:47.000 The operators have noticed it, but it'll go down with the rubble.
01:03:51.000 And, of course, we know the flag's been trampled on by Clinton administration, this city council, and others.
01:03:59.000 Across the street, we've got the bureaucrats.
01:04:01.000 They're just drooling while watching this process go on.
01:04:07.000 I'm glad it's not my life's work to demolish World War II veterans' home and enjoy it.
01:04:16.000 Here goes the teeth of government fixing to take its first bite at Joe's house.
01:04:22.000 We're just following orders out here.
01:04:26.000 Boy, look, the whole thing rocked.
01:04:28.000 Get a picture of it.
01:04:31.000 Now the flag is still flying.
01:04:35.000 Let's back up.
01:04:36.000 We'll get the whole thing on tape here.
01:04:40.000 Pretty sad.
01:04:41.000 There it goes.
01:04:43.000 The whole house shook when it took a first bite of Joe's house here.
01:04:49.000 Here goes.
01:04:50.000 We're going to take another scoop.
01:04:52.000 Another scoop out of Freedom.
01:04:55.000 Another scoop out of Freedom.
01:04:57.000 Yeah, the flag's still up.
01:04:59.000 Reminds you a little bit of Waco.
01:05:01.000 At least the BATF's not out here.
01:05:04.000 Here goes the whole thing.
01:05:07.000 They're knocking Joe's house out.
01:05:09.000 How's Joe doing in the house?
01:05:15.000 Is he in there alone?
01:05:18.000 Yeah, there goes the Joe's that used to be Joe's kitchen and the flag still standing.
01:05:27.000 Maybe that'll be the last thing to go.
01:05:30.000 These people don't care.
01:05:32.000 And now it's raining like hell.
01:05:34.000 Isn't it interesting that the rains picked up as the demolitions picked up.
01:05:41.000 God bless America and to hell with the salamanders and these salamander lovers.
01:05:47.000 That'll spend $26,000 a piece to put in a salamander handrail, but it'll tear down an old man's house.
01:05:55.000 These guys are pieces of crap.
01:05:58.000 People are taking pictures in the background.
01:06:01.000 I'm just going to comment.
01:06:04.000 Oh, I'm ready.
01:06:06.000 I'm ready.
01:06:06.000 People just need to watch it.
01:06:08.000 There goes.
01:06:09.000 The whole house is moving.
01:06:10.000 The whole house is shaking.
01:06:12.000 And here comes the flag.
01:06:15.000 Here comes the flag.
01:06:18.000 Whoa, it's still standing.
01:06:19.000 Yeah, look at that.
01:06:20.000 The house has totally fell down, but the flag's still standing.
01:06:27.000 Yeah, I bet you city officials, they're frothing at the mouth over this.
01:06:32.000 The flag's still standing.
01:06:34.000 I hope he don't take it down.
01:06:35.000 Oh, you're still getting...
01:06:36.000 Well, if he does...
01:06:38.000 When they take it down, it's a literal and symbolic gesture that liberty is gone.
01:06:45.000 Okay.
01:06:46.000 Now look, the rain is at its height now.
01:06:49.000 The rain is at its height!
01:06:52.000 Oh, there it is!
01:06:54.000 Liberty!
01:06:55.000 Oh, that's the end of liberty that's raining its worst.
01:07:00.000 Oh!
01:07:02.000 Boy, that's what they think of that flag.
01:07:07.000 We wanted to go down with the house.
01:07:09.000 No, it worked out good.
01:07:11.000 The rain is at its height.
01:07:13.000 The rain is at its height.
01:07:15.000 The flag is down.
01:07:18.000 And so is Joe's house here.
01:07:22.000 Yeah, I don't, you know, yeah, we believe the house was raggedy, but Joe should have had the right to keep it.
01:07:29.000 You notice it hasn't fallen over on his neighbors.
01:07:32.000 It hasn't gotten anything on his neighbors.
01:07:35.000 Joe lived clean in the house, probably cleaner than most of us, and he just wanted to be left alone in his own residence.
01:07:42.000 So his residence now is gone, and the water is leaking through onto the microphone.
01:07:48.000 Whoa!
01:07:49.000 There goes the city officials with the neighbor next door.
