01:35:29.000 Federal regulators said the first time yesterday, that's not true, that clinical trials of popular antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft show a greater risk of suicide among children taking the drugs compared with those taking dummy pills.

01:35:44.000 Parents and impassioned families pleaded for more urgent action in the day-long meeting of an expert advisory panel.

01:35:50.000 Dozens of parents, siblings, and doctors from all over the country gave lengthy and moving testimony describing family members and patients who had committed suicide or had turned violent after taking the drugs.

01:36:00.000 We were told that Paxil and Prozac were wonder drugs, said Glenn McIntosh.

01:36:07.000 Of Austin, Texas, whose daughter, Caitlin, 12, hanged herself with shoelaces weeks after being started on Paxil and then being switched to Zoloft, we were lied to.

01:37:32.000 These drugs are dangerous.

01:37:34.000 They're like Russian roulette.

01:37:38.000 You know, some people had a good trip and sometimes people had a very bad trip and jumped off buildings thinking they could fly.

01:37:46.000 If you go back to the original formulation of Prozac, which was purchased by Lilly from the European company that developed it, it's very, very similar to the chemical formulation of LSD.

01:38:01.000 It's scary.

01:38:02.000 Well, it's classified as a hallucinogenic.

01:38:06.000 Yes, and that's because I believe the scientist at Lilly patterned it after LSD and made it very similar.

01:38:16.000 But that's neither here nor there.

01:38:17.000 The point is these drugs have become very popular.

01:38:20.000 As you said, 11 million.

01:38:22.000 There's 11 million school children on these drugs.

01:38:25.000 My daughter was unfortunately one of them.

01:38:27.000 And we were told that this was a wonder drug.

01:38:29.000 It was even implied to us that if we did not give our child these kind of drugs to help with her depression, that we would be bad parents.

01:38:40.000 And the truth is, the drugs had the exact opposite effect of what they were supposed to do.

01:38:44.000 She immediately got worse, her depression got worse, and instead of just feeling despondent and having trouble adjusting to the sixth grade and feeling like she didn't fit in and all that... Which is normal.

01:38:55.000 Right!

01:38:55.000 All that typical normal stuff.

01:38:57.000 She started having strong urges to throw herself out windows, hallucinating about bloody knives.

01:39:03.000 Her behavior changed dramatically from a couch potato that liked to sit and watch TV to somebody who had to be moving around. 1.00

01:39:10.000 She was moving all the time.

01:39:11.000 She would run away from home and say, I don't know why. 0.53

01:39:13.000 I don't know where I'm going.

01:39:15.000 I just got to get away.

01:39:16.000 She would write in her journal, I want to die. 0.82

01:39:19.000 It also causes anxiety attacks.

01:39:24.000 It was anxiety.

01:39:25.000 It was something called akathisia, which is a documented known side effect that the drug companies have been aware of for a long time, which is a severe inner and sometimes outer agitation that is so Disturbing that it could actually drive somebody to suicide.

01:39:42.000 Well, sir, I've had friends who were in car wrecks.

01:39:46.000 And because they're depressed over it, in the hospital, they're told, oh, why don't you go on Prozac?

01:39:51.000 They send out free samples of it to millions of people in the mail.

01:39:55.000 I mean, this is like sending hits of acid to people in the mail.

01:39:58.000 Yes.

01:39:59.000 And again, it's hidden in plain view.

01:40:01.000 Right out in the open, this is happening.

01:40:03.000 And what really got me, and the reason I went to the FDA Advisory Board and testified, is that they have known for years, they've known since 1991, That a possible side effect of SSRI-type drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, Celexa, Luvox, etc.

01:40:21.000 A possible side effect is suicidality, suicide ideations, and sometimes homicide, and rage, and psychosis as well.

01:40:30.000 Well, actually, I've got those documents too, but in 83, in the trials, they knew this.

01:40:38.000 And that's what's so frustrating to me, having lost a child over this.

01:40:43.000 If we'd have been warned, if they'd have said, This is a possibility.

01:40:47.000 Watch it.

01:40:48.000 But no, we thought these were wonder drugs, and we believed the doctors when they said, oh, well, the symptoms are getting worse.

01:40:54.000 Let's up the dosage.

01:40:55.000 Let's put her on new and different drugs. 1.00

01:40:57.000 That's what I've seen happen.

01:40:58.000 I know a lot of people who are on four or five of these, because when they take one, it gets worse.

01:41:04.000 They give them another, another, another, another.

01:41:06.000 And the reality is the drugs themselves are causing side effects that look like mental symptoms that they then treat with other drugs.

01:41:16.000 And it becomes a downward spiral.

01:41:19.000 One of my daughter's friends at her last year's memorial service, we were talking and we asked her, why do you think Kaitlyn killed herself?

01:41:28.000 And she says, you know, I knew Kaitlyn and Kaitlyn was so in love with being Kaitlyn.

01:41:34.000 She just was so real and so in touch with other people that when these drugs stopped her from being herself, they interfered with her ability to be the girl she was.

01:41:44.000 She just couldn't stand it anymore.

01:41:46.000 And I think that's a simplistic but a nice explanation.

01:41:50.000 Well, again, I mean, take Ritalin.

01:41:54.000 It's just the amphetamine.

01:41:55.000 It doesn't have the hallucinogen added.

01:41:56.000 They admit it shrinks the brains, heart palpitation, retardation of growth. 1.00

01:42:00.000 I've known families.

01:42:02.000 I've watched children grow up where one of them is not on the drugs, the other two sons are on Ritalin, the parents are both over six feet, the other children are growing fast, and the other children on the drugs are runts.

01:42:18.000 I mean, it's all right out in the open, but our doctors tell us it's good and we trust our doctors.

01:42:25.000 I know it's hard to go over, sir, Glenn McIntosh, but can you tell us Sure.

01:42:34.000 It all started with her changing from 5th grade to 6th grade.

01:42:42.000 In the 5th grade she was a straight A student, a talented musician, artist, she wrote poetry, she loved animals, she wanted to be a veterinarian.

01:42:52.000 Then 6th grade began and It was different. She had to change classes every 45

01:42:57.000 minutes from going in fifth grade having one teacher the whole year.

01:43:01.000 A little male boyfriend of hers, a friend who was a boy initially, but now the hormones were kicking in and she was

01:43:08.000 hoping it would become more.

01:43:09.000 He approached her.

01:43:10.000 her in just the first couple of weeks of sixth grade and said, look I am sorry but I can't

01:43:14.000 talk to you anymore because I am in the popular group and you are not.

01:43:17.000 So I can't have anything to do with you.

01:43:18.000 This is all normal.

01:43:19.000 Normal stuff, right.

01:43:20.000 I went through this.

01:43:22.000 Exactly.

01:43:23.000 And she found herself tall.

01:43:25.000 She was like a head taller than most of the other kids.

01:43:28.000 She would come home and complain, you don't believe what these kids talk about and how

01:43:31.000 they act.

01:43:32.000 She was more emotionally, psychologically, spiritually I believe mature than a lot of

01:43:38.000 the kids in her school.

01:43:39.000 She was frustrated by that, but this is normal stuff.

01:43:41.000 This is stuff that could have been handled with counseling.

01:43:45.000 Frankly, I'll tell you, and this is one of the things I regret, she asked me if she could go see a counselor, because her mother is a counselor, but you can't counsel your own family members.

01:43:54.000 It just doesn't work.

01:43:56.000 So she wouldn't talk to her mom, but she says, can you send me to a counselor?

01:44:00.000 Well, I had just lost a job.

01:44:02.000 We were in dire straits financially.

01:44:04.000 I said, look, I just can't afford counseling right now.

01:44:04.000 I had no money.

01:44:07.000 Why don't you go talk to your school counselor?

01:44:11.000 Maybe she can help.

01:44:13.000 We offered for her to talk to us and tell us all bare soul and tell us everything that was bothering us.

01:44:18.000 But you know, in that 12-year-old state of mind, she just didn't want to open up.

01:44:22.000 So we respected that and said, fine.

01:44:24.000 Find somebody you can talk to.

01:44:25.000 Talk to your school counselor.

01:44:27.000 Well, she talked to the school counselor who called us and said, well, your daughter's depressed and she says she's relating to some article she read in a teen magazine about another girl that was depressed and that other girl was cutting on her arms and I'm afraid she might be thinking about hurting herself.

01:44:41.000 Well, that's another thing.

01:44:42.000 The media hypes up suicide and hypes up weirdness.

01:44:47.000 I really tried to, you know, it's hard to forbid a girl from looking at a magazine, but it bothered me that she looked at these teen magazines.

01:44:54.000 But nevertheless, the article was there, she thought she related to it, she talked about it to the counselor.

01:44:59.000 They called me saying, you've got to get her in. 0.94

01:45:02.000 To a psychiatrist, you've got to, you know, I think she might be thinking about hurting herself. 0.92

01:45:06.000 You've got to take care of this.

01:45:07.000 So now we see a huge escalation.

01:45:09.000 Now, exactly.

01:45:10.000 Before, it was just a passive, gee, I don't know, life's got me down, I'm not fitting in, I don't like the way my body looks, my boyfriend dumbed me, I don't know.

01:45:19.000 You know, just kind of a vague, and I kind of feel like the girl in the article, implying that she might be thinking, you know, not even talking suicide, but just hurting herself, because she felt so bad.

01:45:29.000 We go from there to, they put her on Paxil.

01:45:32.000 Now there's another aspect of this too which is really interesting.

01:45:36.000 Even with that report from the counselor, there was another problem going on with her that we related most of this to, which was a sleep problem.

01:45:44.000 She was having trouble sleeping at night.

01:45:46.000 And a study just came out of Massachusetts that lack of sleep can cause depression and low self-esteem.

01:45:52.000 Well, that's common sense.

01:45:53.000 People who use speed don't get sleep, and then it moves into hallucinations.

01:45:56.000 Right.

01:45:57.000 Exactly.

01:45:58.000 If you don't sleep while you are asleep, you'll sleep while you're awake.

01:46:02.000 Your brain will... Which is what Prozac does.

01:46:06.000 It puts you in that mesmerized state.

01:46:09.000 Exactly!

01:46:10.000 And so she had this problem anyway because we believe that when she was nine years old she had a slight seizure disorder.

01:46:16.000 She would like blackout for a second and drop her book or pencil.

01:46:19.000 And so now this accelerated that.

01:46:22.000 Exactly!

01:46:22.000 What happened?

01:46:23.000 So now we're saying, you know, she has a sleep disorder. 0.71

01:46:27.000 We want to get her help.

01:46:28.000 We took her to the doctor.

01:46:29.000 The doctor gave her Paxil because he said it'll help her sleep.

01:46:32.000 But it'll also help her anxiety and her coping at school.

01:46:36.000 It'll keep her from being so depressed about what's going on at school.

01:46:38.000 And the doctors don't even look at the medical reactions.

01:46:41.000 No!

01:46:42.000 I mean, I know, and I'm not a doctor.

01:46:43.000 You know, my dad is.

01:46:45.000 But you don't give somebody who's got a sleep disorder a drug that interferes with sleep cycles.

01:46:51.000 They don't know it interferes with sleep cycle.

01:46:53.000 All they know is what the pharmaceutical drug rep Give them on a little pamphlet and a whole bunch of samples of, you know?

01:47:00.000 So how long was your daughter on this before she... She was on it for about a week and we noticed how badly she was doing it.

01:47:09.000 It made her into a zombie. 0.99

01:47:10.000 Nothing got better.

01:47:11.000 She didn't sleep better.

01:47:12.000 Her depression got immediately worse.

01:47:15.000 And so we went back to the doctor and he took her off cold turkey, which you're never supposed to do. 0.57

01:47:21.000 And then we waited for another week or two until we can get in to see a psychiatrist, which we had initially sent a, you know, tried to get an appointment with, but it takes six or eight weeks.

01:47:30.000 So we saw the GP.

01:47:31.000 He gave her the Paxil.

01:47:32.000 Then we finally got in to see the shrink, and he gave her Zoloft.

01:47:36.000 Oh, Paxil's not working.

01:47:37.000 Let's put her on Zoloft.

01:47:39.000 And it was immediate.

01:47:40.000 It was immediately after that that her personality changed, her behavior changed.

01:47:46.000 She went into this agitation state.

01:47:48.000 And instead of just feeling down and depressed and lethargic about sixth grade, she started putting her head down on her desk and waking up in a dream state where she saw a pool of blood.

01:47:58.000 She saw knives on the wall and a voice telling her to grab one and kill herself.

01:48:03.000 Whenever she would walk by the second story window, she would feel a strong urge to throw herself out.

01:48:08.000 The poor child was just tormented by these feelings which came out of nowhere all of a sudden.

01:48:12.000 You know, and I know that the pro-drug people are going to say, well, she was just mentally ill and it just progressed. 1.00

01:48:18.000 That's garbage. 0.99

01:48:20.000 This was a normal kid who had just normal type depression, adjusting to sixth grade. 0.99

01:48:26.000 And all of a sudden, she's like in this psychotic state, seeing bloody things and violent images and feeling strong urges.

01:48:34.000 How many weeks after going on these drugs, what happened that day?

01:48:37.000 Okay, what happened is that She went on these drugs and she started getting worse with these strong feelings.

01:48:46.000 So they immediately wanted to put her into Shoal Creek, which is an adolescent ward of a mental hospital, to balance her meds.

01:48:53.000 Now, we were so caught up in this.

01:48:55.000 We grew up thinking that science and medicine was wonderful and doctors know best.

01:48:59.000 They go to school for eight years.

01:49:01.000 Even though part of us was saying, this is wrong, we went ahead with it.

01:49:04.000 We got her in the hospital.

01:49:06.000 There, because she was having all these strong feelings, they decided that she might be psychotic, so they put her on Zyprexa.

01:49:12.000 They put her on Depakote, just in case she did have a seizure disorder. 0.85

01:49:15.000 They put her on a Crazadone, which is a kind of a sedative.

01:49:19.000 They put her on all these drugs, and needless to say, it just got worse and worse.

01:49:25.000 She was a completely changed person coming out of the hospital.

01:49:28.000 She seemed okay for a week or two and then immediately took another down spin, had to go back to the hospital, came out again, went into trying to run away.

01:49:38.000 I mean, we did everything we could.

01:49:39.000 We glued the windows closed in her house.

01:49:42.000 We took all the knives out.

01:49:43.000 We have no guns.

01:49:44.000 We took the door off her bedroom and put a mattress in front of it and slept in front of her bedroom in case she tried to get out in the middle of the night.

01:49:50.000 She'd have to trip over us. 1.00

01:49:52.000 We did everything to protect her.

01:49:55.000 Finally she went to school after Christmas break and the kids started teasing her, oh you've been in the loony bin and one thing after another.

01:50:01.000 And her second period teacher on January 5, 2000 gave her a detention slip because she didn't turn in work from the day before.

01:50:07.000 Well the day before she went To the counselor's office.

01:50:11.000 Yeah, that's right.

01:50:11.000 Now, if you don't do your schoolwork, you go to detention.

01:56:59.000 I mean, obviously it was just a suicide, and it was originally attributed to, you know, just a child committing suicide.

01:57:07.000 Of course, there's always the implications on some people that, well, gee, was she abused?

01:57:13.000 Was she from a terrible home?

01:57:15.000 Which, anybody who knows us in our church community, Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church here, Everybody knows she had a good family life.

01:57:23.000 You know, there was nothing like that going on.

01:57:25.000 So what could explain this?

01:57:26.000 Everybody was searching for answers, and we were searching for answers.

01:57:29.000 We had no clue.

01:57:31.000 And right away, letters started coming from people saying, you know, you might want to look at the antidepressants she was on.

01:57:37.000 They have been known to cause suicide.

01:57:39.000 And we got letter after letter.

01:57:40.000 John Breeding wrote an open letter in the Austin American-Statesman stating that this is a tragic story that may have been caused by the drugs that were supposed to help her.

01:57:50.000 We thought he was some kind of an anti-drug nut, you know?

01:57:52.000 We at first ignored all these letters.

02:02:07.000 That, they predict, is going to make $200 million in its very first year.

02:02:15.000 There are people out there in places of power within these companies that, frankly, are putting human life below profits, or putting profits above human life.

02:02:28.000 The only thing that's going to stop it is a grassroots movement of enough of us rising up and saying, These drugs have hurt enough people that they are dangerous.

02:02:39.000 And as a caring society, we should not allow, you know, I don't care if it's only 6 or 8 or 10 percent of the kids that go, you know, bonkers on these things and get psychotic or shoot other people or kill themselves.

02:02:53.000 That's 80, 100,000 kids against the 11 million that are on it.

02:02:57.000 And I believe it's a higher number than that.

02:02:58.000 But even if it's only a few percentage points, Well, there's also the statistics that once you go on these drugs, it primes your receptors to become very drug addicted to illegal drugs.

02:03:11.000 I know that these drugs themselves are very difficult to get off of.

02:03:14.000 I know people that just are having a heck of a time getting off of them.

02:03:18.000 You have to get off them very slowly because if you stop them, there's something called discontinuation syndrome, which is really a euphemism for withdrawal.

02:03:42.000 As much as modern science wants you to believe that they know, they don't know how the brain works.

02:10:05.000 When you have an agency like the FDA, and I think we need to go after the FDA, expose them for the criminals that they are, because all they do is they go after the natural alternative treatments, they go after the vitamins, The minerals, the herbs, and they want to vilify, you know, everybody who's identified with that.

02:10:27.000 If you look at those that head up the FDA, they were either working for big drug companies before or after.

02:10:59.000 I used to belong to a network marketing company that sold a product for your immune system, and I'd tell some of these people that I'd be working in their houses, and they would say to me, you know, especially the older people, They'd be like, well, I'm taking 8 or 10 prescription drugs, and I don't know if that's going to be safe. 0.73

02:11:41.000 And the FDA is, I believe, pretty much bought and paid for by the pharmaceutical company.

02:11:48.000 To give you an example, at the hearings I went to last Monday, February 2nd, it came out that the medical guy on the FDA, their medical advisor, examiner, reviewed all of the clinical trials in preparation for this meeting they had.

02:12:06.000 And he came to the conclusion that, my gosh, there is some risk here.

02:12:10.000 There does seem to be an increased risk of suicidality on these drugs.

02:12:14.000 And guess what?

02:12:14.000 They didn't allow him to testify.

02:12:16.000 They said he had already drawn a conclusion, he was biased, and they didn't allow his testimony.

02:12:22.000 You know, neither did they allow the testimony of Dr. David Healy, the world's foremost psychopharmacologist.

02:12:31.000 But he's not in with the big boys anymore because he has He's come out and said, absolutely, his research, his books, everything he's done shows that these things can cause suicide in some people.

02:12:45.000 People say, well, the government's this corrupt on all these different issues, and owned by these corporations, controlled by them.
