00:07:39.000 And it was midnight, and I got in the car and was driving home right at midnight and tuned in to KLBJ 590 AM, the station that we do this Sunday syndicated show out of, where we originate the show out of, and I heard them talking about an 84-year-old actor who died.

00:07:54.000 I'd missed the first part of the announcement on Fox News, and I just knew it was Charlton Heston because I knew his age.

00:08:00.000 And then they went into the rolls and repeated that Charlton Heston had died.

00:08:05.000 At 84 years of age.

00:08:07.000 So today I'm going to re-air part of an interview I did with Mr. Heston, now deceased, seven years ago, or January 18, 2000.

00:08:23.000 I started googling and searching on my own website, going back seven years, and guess what?

00:08:31.000 I looked all over the web until about 2 a.m., couldn't find it.

00:09:46.000 He talked about how he believes that criminal elements of the government will assassinate Barack Obama if he truly becomes the president and tries to pull troops out of Iraq.

01:50:00.000 Why did you decide to get back really involved in the Second Amendment fight at the forefront and to write this new book, The Courage to Be Free?

01:50:08.000 Well, of course, I've been involved with the Second Amendment, you could say, since I was a little kid shooting deer up in Michigan.

01:50:17.000 Then I became involved more seriously with the Bill of Rights, and I came to see the importance of defending every one of the twelve articles of the Bill of Rights, of which the second is the right to keep and bear harms.

01:50:32.000 And we had a lot of success with it in the last election.

01:50:37.000 There's an interesting thing.

01:50:38.000 The President last April, Felt that this would be a good time to take down the NRA.

01:50:48.000 And he made a couple of brief radio addresses about it and so on.

01:50:55.000 But he realized it wasn't going to fly.

01:50:58.000 And so he abandoned it.

01:51:00.000 And of course, what he didn't realize, as we found ourselves rather amazed to find, When I was campaigning through, what, eight different states and several different cities, and what the president has not realized is not just the NRA.

01:51:24.000 The NRA has, what, just under 5,000 members.

01:51:28.000 I'm sorry, 5 million.

01:51:31.000 And we A campaign on this issue, in part because of course, as again, the President did not realize that an overwhelming proportion of people in this country are hunters.

01:51:51.000 Of course they are.

01:51:53.000 This is hunting country.

01:51:54.000 The whole continent is a hunting continent.

01:51:58.000 Except for New York City and L.A., of course.

01:52:02.000 And we had enormous success.

01:52:06.000 We would gather crowds.

01:52:08.000 Flint, Michigan, I think, was the biggest one.

01:52:11.000 We had a rally at 7 o'clock in the morning, which meant people who were going to work, of course, driving to work, had to get up to come at 6 o'clock.

01:52:25.000 And we had over 3,000 people in some different venues.

01:52:31.000 And in every case, the Second Amendment won the day.

01:52:37.000 It was quite surprising, I have to say.

01:52:40.000 Well, we see the mainstream media, the controlled propaganda arms is what I call them, and I think they've shown themselves to deserve that title, convincing a lot of people that the average American isn't for the Second Amendment.

01:52:53.000 But if you can explain to people the basics of how it's there to defend us from the street thug, the government thug, or to put food on the table, not to mention just as a sporting enjoyment and heritage, most people are actually for it.

01:53:08.000 John Ashcroft right now, they're trying to confirm him.

01:53:10.000 I think he would be a good... I think he will be confirmed.

01:53:15.000 I think he will make a fine Attorney General.

01:53:18.000 Certainly a far better one than Janet Reno.

01:53:21.000 But absolutely, that wouldn't be too hard to do.

01:53:24.000 But Mr. Kennedy, who I really don't think has any room to talk, with all the skeletons in his closet, began to attack him.

01:53:32.000 There's no one in the U.S.

01:53:33.000 Senate that has more...

01:53:35.000 More skeletons in his closet than Kennedy.

01:53:38.000 He should be ashamed of himself.

01:53:40.000 He really should.

01:53:40.000 I worked for his older brother.

01:53:43.000 I voted for him.

01:53:45.000 I campaigned for him.

01:53:48.000 But Teddy Kennedy is another piece of work entirely.

01:53:53.000 But anyway, to return to the question of the Second Amendment, There are, for example, now 41 states that have concealed carry laws.

01:54:05.000 Meaning that if you pass a background check, show that you have no felony convictions of any kind, show that you demonstrate that you know how to use a firearm safely, you can then get a permit to carry a concealed carry weapon under your arm or wherever.

01:54:25.000 and not something I don't want to do because I don't fear it's I've used too many pistols in too many movies they're kind of heavy to carry but anyway the point is that in every one of the 42 states where there is uh... concealed carry laws one the uh... the murder rate the crime rate too Never mind the murder rate.

01:54:48.000 The crime rate has dropped significantly.

01:54:52.000 Significantly in every one of those states.

01:54:55.000 Why?

01:54:56.000 Because, of course, most people who have this permit don't carry all the time.

01:55:02.000 But the point is, the bad guys don't know who's carrying and who isn't.

01:55:06.000 So that is, of course, you don't need to have to carry that.

01:55:09.000 Again, ladies and gentlemen, we're talking to Charlton Heston.

01:55:36.000 Well, it turned out that Ashcroft's actual quote was basically paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson, so how dare Kennedy?

01:55:44.000 Any comments on that?

01:55:46.000 You know, I have to say, much as I admired his big brother, I think Teddy Kennedy is one of the worst members of the U.S.

01:55:56.000 Senate.

01:55:57.000 You know what?

01:56:35.000 So, kind of embarrassing me, in hindsight, after how bad Ashcroft turned out to be.

01:56:40.000 But I tried to give Bush benefit of the doubt, and it turned out Very, very bad indeed.
