01:01:54.000 Raymond, this is a short segment, as you know, as a listener to the show, so Start off a little bit about yourself, where you grew up, what you did, how you got involved in the Air Force and weapons development, then you got into NASA.

01:02:14.000 Well, like your national security letters or anything like that, but you know, news articles with you in it at NASA and photos and stuff like that, and what you think really went on with the Apollo program.

01:02:26.000 I was assigned to a military program called the Moe Program, and for my training, I was sent to Mission Control at what was then the Mann Spacecraft Center, since the name changed to Johnson Spacecraft Center, to work in the Apollo Program and to train as a controller for the military program.

01:02:51.000 Well, I hardly hit the dirt down in Houston.

01:02:56.000 When the mole program was cancelled, they were saying there will be no military program, it will all be a civilian-controlled civilian program.

01:03:06.000 I didn't believe that for one microsecond.

01:03:08.000 Yeah, they say 80% of the space program is secret military, right?

01:03:13.000 Well, I have no... I've never worked on the other side of it, but I have had enough hiccups, I've seen, to believe that That what has become the shuttle program is simply a diversion from the real program.

01:08:57.000 There were people from the Army, people from the Navy, and people from the Air Force, as myself.

01:09:03.000 Now, why had they sent you to NASA?

01:09:04.000 What had you done previously in the Air Force?

01:09:11.000 But then you said you'd worked on missile systems and guidance and things like that?

01:09:41.000 I wound up working in an intelligence branch.

01:09:43.000 And then beyond that, I went Out of the Air Force, and I worked for Lockheed in various phases, including, well, the first, I worked for the Radio Corporation of America.

01:09:56.000 Onboard camera system, meaning the camera systems that were flown on the shuttle.

01:10:02.000 They were made to withstand the extreme temperature and the vacuum of space.

01:10:08.000 Let's go back to your, on the Apollo 13 mission.

01:10:11.000 You've got photos, and I've even seen video of, you know, you there at Mission Control.

01:10:15.000 You were on the second and first different modules.

01:10:17.000 We've got three different systems, like the main one running the mission and then backups.

01:10:21.000 Describe what you did on the Apollo missions for listeners out there.

01:10:27.000 Well, I was in the guidance and control section and as a guidance officer, I helped formulate the maneuvers and plan what was to be done during the mission.

01:10:42.000 I had to update the spacecraft and the lunar module computers with the next coordinates that were to be for the next burn, the next maneuver.

01:10:55.000 There was a long list of numbers that had to be put in and checked very carefully to make sure it was all correct.

01:11:01.000 Then it was sent to one of three tracking stations around the world and uploaded to the spacecraft and into the spacecraft computers.

01:11:10.000 And then when it came time to execute the burn and they put it on timers, it counted down and the amount of propulsion and whatever direction we were directed or the numbers indicated was what the velocity that was added to The spacecraft.

01:11:26.000 And I help do that and keep up with the paperwork.

01:12:39.000 However, I was later working on a program after I was out of the air force and after I'd already worked for RCA, I was working for Lockheed and I was assigned to a program.

01:12:51.000 That dealt with photography, and I was a very good photographer.

01:12:56.000 I had a photographer myself.

01:12:57.000 I had extensive knowledge and background.

01:13:00.000 And you later worked on the shuttle cameras too, so that's what you did.

01:13:04.000 Yes, actually I worked on it for this case, but this case I was working on film photography at a section in NASA.

01:13:14.000 One of my primary jobs, believe it or not, was to go attend all of the meetings having to do with the space station, and to be an Alex Jones on that, to stand up and raise heck and tell them that they could not have any film photography unless they put a lead-lined film safe as part of the structure of the space station.

01:13:46.000 And that made everybody mad, because I'd have to interrupt to do it, and they didn't want to hear it, especially after they heard it the first, second, or third time, or something like that.

01:13:57.000 Here's a bigger picture of you, but that's out of the newspaper, and then the NASA newspaper, and then here is... Which one are you here in this photo?

01:14:16.000 Anyway, the problem with the film on the shuttle is that if you had a lot of solar activity, it would cause the film to be degraded.

01:14:32.000 Both before and after exposure didn't make any difference because the cosmic rays and the radiation from the sun would go through everything and make streaks in the film, fog it out.

01:14:46.000 Film photography on the shuttle has been a problem.

01:14:51.000 And that's not even getting out towards the Van Allen.

01:14:54.000 That's just the radiation that's not being absorbed by the water in the atmosphere.

01:14:58.000 I mean, that's just the sun's radiation.

01:15:00.000 We're operating above the atmosphere.

01:15:02.000 Way above the atmosphere.

01:15:03.000 No, I know.

01:15:03.000 That's what I'm saying.

01:15:04.000 The atmosphere is what blocks out that radiation.

01:15:06.000 So just the sun radiation you're saying is messing up the film.

01:15:09.000 Imagine what the Van Allen would do.

01:15:12.000 Well, it's not only the Van Allen.

01:15:13.000 The Van Allen captures or turns away from the Earth a great deal of the damaging radiation and particles coming from the Sun.

01:15:23.000 But the Van Allen Belt is about 400 nautical miles in altitude, approximately.

01:15:28.000 It's a range of like 100 miles or something like that thick.

01:15:34.000 Well, my point was, the shuttle's not up in the Van Allen, but it's still getting cosmic rays that are frying film.

01:26:14.000 They had to withstand extreme vibration, high heat and cold.

01:26:21.000 They had to be, they were remotely operated, and they were in all specs very special, and they cost a million dollars a piece.

01:26:39.000 I had, because that camera system was used in every operation done with the shuttle, shuttle operant, operation, so.

01:26:51.000 It's a lot easier when we're sitting around eating dinner and telling me all this.

01:26:53.000 So, with a half a dozen people that were involved in this, what was amounted to a satellite RCA office, where we maintained and did all the astronaut training, helped with all the experiments, I got involved in everything that was going on with the shuttle through the Until 1983.

01:27:23.000 Anyway, the digital cameras are an enormous convenience in that if you have something wrong or you want something to take a picture of damage or a problem on board the shuttle, you can take it with a digital camera or on the space station and send the

01:27:48.000 Radio the our telemetry the picture down and it can be examined on the ground immediately.

01:27:54.000 There's no delay.

01:27:56.000 And this is an enormous problem.

01:27:58.000 This is an enormous advantage when trying to solve any problems where you need help of engineers on the ground.

01:28:09.000 No, but going back, you didn't have those during Apollo, though.

01:28:11.000 That's right, these did not exist.

01:28:12.000 And they're claiming that they're film cameras, these pristine, big, glossy, hundreds and hundreds of them, total in the missions, thousands, from the moon, with no damage on them.

01:28:21.000 As an engineer who worked with these cameras, who worked on the program, who worked on Apollo, on all of it, is this a lot of bull?

01:28:29.000 I don't see how it is possible to have escaped any damage to the photographs.

01:28:34.000 Now, you've probably told me what the scuttlebutt is, though you weren't on those secret programs, that they do have, and we know they have secret programs, that they have the space planes, all of it, and that this was all basically a PR front.

01:34:28.000 Contractors like Lockheed, Grumman, you name every Boeing, every one of the major airframe builders, made a proposal ...that had the shuttle, our shuttle-type crash, flying on something that looked like a 747.

01:34:52.000 The idea was to get the shuttle as high and fast as possible, have it take off on its own internal fuel tank and propulsion system, And have a recoverable system.

01:35:06.000 It would be launched off the back of a 747 type.

01:35:10.000 Now you've got a whole bag of documents, photos.

01:35:16.000 I was looking at a photo for the shuttle on the back of a 747.

01:35:20.000 But anyway, that is quite doable.

01:35:26.000 But the 747 is not fast enough.

01:35:28.000 NARS intended, well, in first place, the shuttle is launched with an enormous and very expensive fuel tank that holds liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

01:35:42.000 That huge fuel tank that the shuttle looks like a bug on the side of.

01:35:46.000 And it has a huge, two huge solid rocket motors on either side to lift it on launch.

01:35:52.000 It would burn for two and a half minutes.

01:35:58.000 That was never intended to be the case.

01:36:02.000 And it violated most of NASA's safety policies as far as the danger of having, working with and having those solid rocket segments because they used a perchlorate rubber or sulfur type fuel.

01:36:18.000 It had a lot of aluminum and perchlorate in it, potassium chlorate.

01:36:25.000 If you dropped a wrench or something on a segment that was sitting around the Launch facility.

01:36:34.000 I was down there on some trips or on business on the cameras.

01:36:39.000 You would actually cause it to ignite.

01:36:41.000 It was precursive sensitive if you hit it hard enough.

01:37:47.000 They were going to do it right, and we were going to have a totally reusable shuttle, but at the price...

01:37:55.000 In 1970 dollars was going to be in the billions of dollars to get it all done.

01:38:01.000 Now, the thing that you all have missed that nobody paid any attention to that really just fried me and everyone else was Robert McNamara canceled the production of the Saturn 5 booster.

01:38:18.000 And when he did that, he killed the space program.

01:38:21.000 It would be more than 10 years, they knew at least, before we had anything that would fly into space, like the shuttle development and testing that had to be done.

01:38:31.000 The Saturn was an amazing lifter.

01:38:33.000 That's right, and not only that, but it was relatively inexpensive.

01:38:38.000 It burned kerosene and liquid oxygen, at least for the first two stages, and then the S-IVB, the top third stage, propulsion stage of it, was liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

01:38:50.000 But at any rate, He not only had the production stopped, he had the tooling destroyed and the drawings destroyed.

01:38:59.000 This, to me, amounted to high treason.

01:39:03.000 And I'm sure he didn't do that on his own.

01:39:07.000 They, for some reason, changed their mind about flying heavy objects into space, and we still can't duplicate with the shuttle what the Saturn V would do.

01:39:23.000 This is one of the big mysteries.

01:39:25.000 They apparently did not want to publicly fly in space like we had been.

01:39:33.000 The last three of the Saturn V's, they put one on display horizontally at Johnson Space Center, they put one at Huntsville, Alabama, Redstone Arsenal, and one at the Cape Kennedy installation.

02:47:13.000 Bush could have easily said, well, I inherited the structure from Clinton, I'm a Republican, he's a Democrat.
