01:08:44.000 Yes, so here's what happened.

01:08:48.000 I got a mutual friend of ours, another master, emailed me yesterday, hours before this story broke, and told me, you know, Shane's been hijacked and he's being held hostage.

01:08:58.000 Oh, no.

01:08:59.000 So he was in contact with a family, a buddy of mine, and so I've been keeping track of it all the way along here.

01:09:05.000 And what's been going on is this.

01:09:07.000 This ship was on what we call the grain run.

01:09:10.000 It's a humanitarian aid run, running government aid cargo up and down the coast of Africa.

01:09:17.000 And I've known a lot of different people that have been on this run over the years, and it's just pretty much a steady gig all the time.

01:09:24.000 Well, this ship was carrying that stuff.

01:09:26.000 And so they were about 380 miles off the coast where they got hit.

01:09:30.000 Now, they were unarmed.

01:09:32.000 And so the pirates were able, with their weaponry and their skill, were able to get aboard and hijack the vessel.

01:09:39.000 And then the crew revolted, and the way it normally works with the security plans that we have on board, I'm a certified vessel security officer as well, and what we normally do is we have a safe room where everybody goes on board, Oh, who's here, who's not here, so on and so forth.

01:09:58.000 And so as I understand, that's what happened.

01:10:03.000 there was a revolt by the crew that attacked the pirates that were on board.

01:10:09.000 good! Now, there are varying reports.

01:10:25.000 The report that I had, one report that I had was, was that Captain Phillips, who was the Permanent Master, offered himself in exchange for the crew.

01:10:32.000 And I have not been able to confirm that, but that's the word.

01:10:36.000 So then, at that point, when they tried to do a switch, an exchange, the crew let the pirate go, and it was hoping to get the captain back.

01:10:47.000 Well, then the pirate didn't let the captain back.

01:10:49.000 So now what the situation is, Is that you have a captain, the permanent captain, Phillips is his name, and he's in the lifeboat down with the pirates who are armed and holding him hostage.

01:11:03.000 Then you have the crew up on there and the first officer, Shane Murphy, the guy that I know, has now been promoted because of this terrible situation, has now controlled the vessel.

01:11:11.000 The first officer always assumes command when the captain's not there.

01:11:16.000 And so now Shane is the master of the vessel.

01:11:18.000 And starts trying to negotiate the release of the captain.

01:11:22.000 That has been unsuccessful.

01:11:25.000 So what happened then was that the warship, the Navy warship, the Bainbridge, started heading that way, and then they had a P-3 surveillance vessel, or aircraft, that was monitoring the situation off the coast.

01:11:38.000 But we're still talking hundreds of miles off the east coast of Somalia.

01:11:42.000 So in any case, Uh, at that point, uh, the Navy came on, boarded, uh, uh, the, uh, Maersk, Alabama, and, um, has now, uh, as I understand, is moving towards, uh, Mombasa, uh, under, uh, its own power and, uh, being escorted.

01:12:01.000 The captain, the permanent captain, Phillips, is in a desperate situation because he, uh, is being held hostage on the lifeboat that is dead in the water, which I understand does not have any fuel.

01:12:14.000 They burned up the small amount of fuel that the lifeboat has, and at this point is drifting, surrounded by the U.S. military, but the pirates have him being held hostage.

01:12:28.000 So we've gone from a hijacked situation, and the crew revolted, and they were unarmed.

01:12:33.000 So I have to find out later on how that happened.

01:12:36.000 Nobody's been exactly sure how it happened, but I know Shane.

01:12:40.000 Uh, for having sailed with him, and actually he was on board when we got hit by pirates on my watch, Christmas night 2003, which you and I talked about in the Rio Hondo Dominican Republic.

01:12:49.000 He was on that ship.

01:12:50.000 In any case, uh, Shane is a very strong, uh, aggressive, intelligent man, and, uh, I know that he, uh, is a proactive kind of guy, so he's not just gonna sit by and let, you know, things happen.

01:13:01.000 He went after it, and he succeeded, uh, and the rest of the crew succeeded, and I give those people a lot of credit.

01:13:07.000 That's a great thing.

01:13:10.000 But then again we go back to the point of why are governments trying to prohibit ships from being armed?
