00:06:53.000 I've been studying viruses since I was in graduate school.

00:06:58.000 Got my PhD at the University of Southern California back in 1978 and then did postdoctoral work and went on staff at a clinic and research foundation.

00:07:10.000 There I was mostly working on oncogenes but I also did some work on the flu back then with Ian Wilson who actually discovered the structure of the influenza virus was on the cover of Nature magazine back in 1980.

00:07:24.000 I developed monoclonal antibodies With our kind of factories that make antibodies to target almost anything, including the flu.

00:07:37.000 The flu monoclonal is probably the most popular monoclonal in the world.

00:07:41.000 Everybody uses it mostly for basic research to track different genes it's designed so that it can really identify any type Yeah, I mean, this is not just you saying this.

00:07:54.000 You're a world-renowned inventor in this area, so you're uniquely qualified to speak on what we're currently facing.

00:08:02.000 Yeah, and basically to bring a little bit more current, you know, when I was at Harvard, I got a little bit interested in newly emerging viruses.

00:08:19.000 And then when bird flu kind of made its appearance back in 2003, I kind of switched over to that and looked at how the virus evolves.

00:09:52.000 You got 46 chromosomes, while the virus has eight.

00:09:56.000 And each of those gene segments has kind of a pedigree.

00:10:00.000 You can look at the sequence and tell where it came from.

00:10:03.000 And this virus is a mixture.

00:10:05.000 It's one of the genes that's involved with copying genetic information.

00:10:11.000 It's called TB1.

00:10:12.000 That's a human gene, but that was picked up by this virus back in 1993 from a human H3N2.

00:10:21.000 The human gene's been in this virus for almost two decades.

00:10:26.000 It's got two other genes that are involved with copying the genetic information, also called plumerase.

00:10:31.000 There's plumerase A and plumerase B1.

00:10:34.000 And both of those, I'm sorry, B2, and both of those are avian.

00:10:38.000 And then the other five genes are swine.

00:10:40.000 So it really has five swine, two avian, and one human, but it's had that composition since the 1990s.

00:10:50.000 So it didn't just happen.

00:10:52.000 It didn't just get manufactured.

00:10:56.000 None of that is unusual.

00:10:58.000 And the reason it happens at a high frequency is because it all happens in swine.

00:11:04.000 Swine is able to be infected by both avian viruses, human viruses, as well as swine viruses, all.

00:11:13.000 All these are flu.

00:11:15.000 And we get multiple viruses in the same host, in this case the swine.

00:11:21.000 The virus can either swap those chromosomes, those eight genes, and come up with a new constellation of genes, or it can actually recombine and actually change the gene.

00:17:46.000 The virus in 1918 was a swine virus that jumped into the human population and it recombined and came up with a new version.

00:18:00.000 In the spring, it started out as a mild disease.

00:18:02.000 In fact, the physicians that were looking at patients in the spring of 1918 didn't even think it was influenza because it was so mild.

00:18:09.000 And then the virus evolved, and in the fall it came back with a vengeance, and it ended up killing the large number of people.

00:18:18.000 The 2009 is really behaving the same way.

00:18:22.000 It is a swine virus which has jumped to humans.

00:18:25.000 The last time a swine virus jumped to humans and was easily transmitted was 1911.

00:18:31.000 Some of your listeners may be old enough to remember 1976, which was the swine flu vaccine.

00:18:40.000 In that case, it was the soldier at Fort Dix that died, and a few hundred soldiers at Fort Dix were infected.

00:18:47.000 That led to the vaccine program, but by the time the vaccine was ready, the virus had essentially burned itself out.

00:18:55.000 But also, they had to suspend the program because the vaccine paralyzed and killed so many people.

00:19:01.000 Well, there were side effects and it did put a black mark on the vaccine.

00:19:07.000 And it was kind of a rushed vaccine because there was a lot of concern that it was going to spread and it was going to be a repeat of 1918.

00:19:16.000 But there's a big difference between what happened in 1976 Well, why is Obama, sir, Dr. Nyman, saying he wants to take three or four?

00:19:27.000 Or will we take shots every morning with our Wheaties?

00:19:30.000 Well, here's the way the vaccines work.

00:19:33.000 I mean, there's two different issues.

00:19:35.000 The swine, which is the pandemic, the H1N1, which is causing the pandemic, is a swine virus.

00:19:45.000 The seasonal flu vaccine is called a trivalent vaccine because it's made of three different seasonal flus.

00:19:52.000 It's made of an H1N1 human, an H3N2 human, and an influenza B.

00:19:57.000 So that is recommended on a yearly basis because the virus changes so quickly that the immunity that's generated by the vaccine one year generally doesn't carry over that efficiently to the next year because the virus has evolved and changed.

00:20:15.000 And that's what an annual flu vaccine is.

00:20:19.000 It's once a year.

00:20:20.000 Children getting it for the first time, they take it twice because you need a booster.

00:20:25.000 And that's the seasonal flu.

00:20:27.000 And that's totally separate.

00:20:29.000 From the pandemic flu.

00:20:31.000 The pandemic flu is swine, so there's not much, if any, there probably is no cross-reactivity.

00:20:37.000 But they've been saying it's not proper to even call it swine flu.

00:26:28.000 I mean, it's not that there hasn't been flu in swine before, but the transmission of the swine flu from human to human really became obvious in April of this year.

00:26:40.000 I'm sorry, in March of this year, at the end of The end of March, beginning of April.

00:26:46.000 And that's when it became apparent that there was a pandemic.

00:26:51.000 Nobody really knew about the pandemic involving swine until April of this year.

00:26:58.000 But the reason it's being taken quite seriously really has to do with the history of the 1918.

00:27:07.000 And that's really the reason there's been the pandemic prepared us.

00:27:12.000 Actually, there's a law, and again, it's getting a little bit out of my area, but declaring bird flu a quarantinable disease actually was signed by President Bush back in April 1st but declaring bird flu a quarantinable disease actually was signed by President

00:27:32.000 And that coincided with health care workers dying in North Vietnam as a result of H5N1.

00:27:43.000 So the potential of a pandemic of one sort or another has been around for For several years now in a very real way.

00:27:55.000 But the swine flu is kind of a different, a little bit different than the bird flu.

00:28:01.000 It's harder for the birds to dump to humans because that's avian to mammal.

00:28:06.000 It's much easier for swine because that's mammal to mammal.

00:28:10.000 So it is quite a bit different from one species to the other, but it is a species dump.

00:28:18.000 And that is what is causing the concern.

00:28:22.000 As far as the numbers are concerned, they're quite a bit higher than 200 as far as deaths are concerned.

00:28:32.000 Doctor, let me stop you because I can pull these numbers up and I'm not saying you're wrong, but the CDC three weeks ago said they're going to stop reporting flu fatalities with the swine flu, as it's known.

00:28:48.000 They say it was like 198, and then less than 2,000.

00:28:51.000 It was right at 2,000 worldwide.

00:28:53.000 Are you saying those are wrong numbers?

00:29:14.000 Well, the real numbers... Well, here's a number that'll probably get your attention.

00:29:24.000 In Argentina, in the last month or so, there have been Probably over a thousand that have died in that country alone in just the one month period.

00:29:35.000 The official numbers, yesterday Argentina came out with official numbers that said that there were 337 dead and they said there were 400 more that were dead but hadn't been tested.

00:29:46.000 So they admitted on their government website in Argentina that there were likely to be over 700.

00:29:53.000 I've got boots on the ground actually in Argentina journalists who are actually doing stories for It's again mainstream media, but they are on the ground.

00:30:02.000 I do get reports back and they say it's over a thousand.

00:30:06.000 Where are you getting your numbers?

00:30:08.000 I mean, how are you getting your numbers?

00:30:09.000 Because I keep hearing that it gets underreported some places, but other times they list it as a swine flu, but then later find out it wasn't.

00:30:20.000 No, that's pretty rare that they listen to the twine flu and find out it isn't.

00:30:25.000 It's usually the other way around, that the people test negative and then they discover on autopsy that it was twine flu.

00:30:33.000 The numbers, most of the numbers that are used to flu track actually come from government reports.

00:30:40.000 The U.S.

00:30:42.000 is pulling back, but just to clarify that, they're pulling back mostly on the mild cases they used to report.

00:30:51.000 Each state reported cases with quite a bit of detail on a county-by-county basis, and they were reporting on a daily basis.

00:30:59.000 That went to a weekly basis, and then the CDC recently announced that they were no longer going to be doing the weekly And they weren't going to be doing it on a county-by-county because there were too many cases.

00:31:15.000 And they basically have been overwhelmed.

00:31:17.000 So they can't do the lab confirmed.

00:31:19.000 The cases I cited for Argentina actually come from the government website.

00:31:24.000 In Argentina, and it's written in Spanish, but it is, you know, it's easily translated and the numbers are quite real.

00:31:30.000 And they just came out with an announcement yesterday.

00:31:33.000 It's dated August 5th.

00:31:35.000 Their numbers have tended to be low.

00:31:38.000 And the evidence that their numbers are low is that in addition to the national sites, there are state sites or provincial sites in Argentina.

00:31:48.000 And those numbers tend to be quite a bit higher.

00:31:50.000 I mean, most of the deaths in Argentina are in the Buenos Aires region, and there's another province, Santa Fe, which is right next to it, a town, Rosario.

00:31:59.000 And those are where most of the deaths at least have been reported.

00:32:03.000 And so they came out with a report yesterday, and the report yesterday did list the 337 cases.

00:32:12.000 It broke them down by each of the provinces, and then they noted that they are lagging, and they've been lagging the whole time.

00:32:19.000 I mean, Argentina is one of the places on the map that we actually include suspects.

00:32:25.000 Because they basically don't become an official case until they're tested by the official state lab.

00:32:34.000 So even if there's a private lab that has confirmed the case, they won't count it until they confirm it independently.

00:32:40.000 And there's so many cases that they're just very backlogged.

00:32:44.000 So the 337 were lab-confirmed cases, and the 400 were cases that essentially have the same features.

00:32:53.000 The flu, even though it's flu season in the Southern Hemisphere now, and so that's one of the reasons there's so much attention being paid to the Southern Hemisphere because it's cold and it's flu season and it's kind of a preview of what's going to happen in the Northern Hemisphere starting in the fall.

00:33:11.000 And they, you know, have a thousand A thousand people that have died, and most of them are young adults.

00:33:24.000 They're between the ages of 20 and 45, just like 1918.

00:33:27.000 Well, looking at your map, Doctor, is there any evidence this is affecting people who racially have more melanin in their skin?

00:33:42.000 If you go and look at the map, you can see that right now, Most of the cases are in the Southern Hemisphere.

00:33:49.000 So it's in South America, it's in Australia, and it's in New Zealand.

00:33:56.000 And now South Africa is starting to catch up.

00:33:59.000 Is that because it's their flu season right now?

00:34:01.000 That's right.

00:34:02.000 So they're basically six months off from us.

00:34:06.000 So they are really at the height of their, or they're entering the height of their flu season.

00:34:11.000 But what's interesting, and what's the concern, is that in places like Argentina, almost all of the flu is swine flu.

00:34:20.000 So it basically has outcompeted seasonal flu.

00:34:25.000 Normally at this time of the year, there will be an H1N1 human, an H3N2 human, an influenza B.

00:34:31.000 All of those are being displaced by the swine flu.

00:34:34.000 Okay, sir, what do you... 99%.

00:34:38.000 Sure, doctor, that's a big number.

00:34:40.000 Doctor, what then do you project as a tracker?

00:34:43.000 What do you project the death rate is going to be like this flu season in the western countries, A, and B, when do you see it peaking and then dissipating?

00:34:56.000 Okay.

00:34:59.000 The history from 1918, as a guide, is that it really started in the fall as far as changing over and becoming lethal.

00:35:09.000 And therefore, I mean, the CDC has acknowledged that the number of cases in the United States is well over a million.

00:35:18.000 And it really started at the end of the flu season.

00:35:20.000 I mean, when flu really got going in the U.S., It was really in April and May, and flu season is pretty much over.

00:35:28.000 The flu season pretty much peaked in February in the United States, and by April it's just about gone, and it's totally gone in May.

00:35:37.000 In the United States it's the same thing.

00:35:39.000 99% of any flu that's happening right now is the swine flu.

00:35:45.000 And the virus is evolving, so there's a little bit of a clue by what's going on in South America and in Australia.

00:35:55.000 And you can look at the website for the flu trackers and see what kind of numbers are showing up.

00:36:05.000 And we have a daily plot of the deaths.

00:36:08.000 And the daily plot is a little bit uneven because, like I say, the states and the governments aren't really reporting daily.

00:36:16.000 They're reporting weekly, so sometimes you get some spikes.

00:36:19.000 But the biggest number of deaths in a day was yesterday.

00:36:25.000 And if you look at the map, it's over 80.

00:36:27.000 So over 80 people either died or reported as died on yesterday.

00:36:32.000 And that's the highest that it's been so far.

00:36:35.000 We're going to change the map over, the graph a little bit.

00:36:38.000 Right now it's daily, and it doesn't look as dramatic as it is because the numbers have been high for about a month now.

00:36:46.000 We only show a month.

00:36:47.000 But when we switch it over to weekly, you'll be able to see that there were very few deaths back in May and June.

00:36:55.000 And then it started to go up in July, and now it's higher than ever.

00:36:59.000 How many deaths in the United States again?

00:37:02.000 I've got it in front of me for the world.

00:37:07.000 The fatalities worldwide are at 1727 right now.

00:37:11.000 The United States, I think we've got around 350.

00:37:16.000 So there's 350 that have been either confirmed by lab tests.

00:37:22.000 Well, they've all been confirmed by lab tests.

00:37:23.000 Less than 2,000 worldwide.

00:37:25.000 I mean if they're in their peak season down in the other hemisphere and regular flu kills 30 plus thousand a year in the U.S.

00:37:33.000 alone, this sounds like an incredibly weak flu.

00:37:36.000 No, it's an evolving flu.

00:37:40.000 It just jumped, okay?

00:37:42.000 But don't flus, according to other doctors, but you're an expert, so I'm not disagreeing, I'm just asking.

00:37:47.000 A lot of other virologists and doctors we've talked to say that flus tend to mutate into something less lethal, on average.

00:37:55.000 Well, they're mostly talking about seasonal flu.

00:37:59.000 This virus is already fairly efficiently transmitted.

00:38:11.000 And it's an airborne transmission?

00:38:15.000 That's why there are all these outbreaks at schools and summer camps now.

00:38:22.000 And the virus, because it's now adapting to humans, so it's been in swine, it just got into humans a few months ago.

00:38:36.000 And human flu is more efficient at transmitting and growing.

00:38:46.000 It can mutate with the regular flu and adapt to humans.

01:04:52.000 One, I don't know if you saw this or not, the high-frequency trading scandal.

01:04:57.000 High-frequency trading, which is now being talked about in Washington.

01:05:06.000 Now, just to give you an analogy here, if you saw somebody, your neighbor, and they had a rubber hose in your neighbor's gas tank, and he had that hose, and it was over a bucket, and he was stealing gas from your, you know, you'd say, hey buddy, you know, don't steal our neighbor's gas, that's not very nice, that's not very social behavior, he's siphoning off gas, right?

01:05:35.000 Goldman Sachs, over at 85 Broad Street, is where they have their headquarters down there on Wall Street.

01:05:41.000 They co-located a server next to the New York Stock Exchange, and they use this high-frequency trading to siphon off Depending on whose estimates you read, between $100 million and $200 million a day.

01:05:54.000 They're just siphoning cash directly off the floor of the exchange.

01:05:57.000 And that's what we know of, with a computer program plugged in secretly, rigging the market.

01:06:04.000 But that's okay, because they're allowed to give themselves the bonus money while they're former executives of the Treasury Sec.

01:06:12.000 They claim that they are, quote-unquote, adding liquidity to the system.

01:06:17.000 So if you caught a guy siphoning gas from a car, and his defense was, no, I'm adding gas to the car!

01:06:26.000 So they say, hey, Goldman, you're siphoning money from the Florida Exchange using high-frequency trading, using all those proprietary algorithms, which I know a lot about because I created the virtual specialist technology that's used to trade bonds by Cantor Fitzgerald on Wall Street.

01:06:41.000 By the Hollywood Stock Exchange and Trade Box Office features and I designed these systems.

01:06:46.000 So I know all about these systems and basically it's nothing more than siphoning off cash.

01:06:55.000 We need the banks on Wall Street to have a little profiteering because after all, if the banks aren't healthy, the economy is not healthy.

01:07:11.000 Then it turns out the Fed is paying banks not the loan because they want to consolidate and blow out the economy.

01:08:45.000 He saved something like $100 million in taxes by taking that job, worked for a couple of years, engineered the collapse of Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns, took away all the competition from Goldman and J.P. Morgan and his crony buddies, and got rid of his archenemy Dick Fold over Lehman Brothers.

01:09:08.000 Going back to what I call the 9th of August, or 8-9, which is right up there with 9-11, two years ago, the 9th of August, two years ago in 2007 is when BNP in Paris said that they couldn't value the subprime bonds on their books, and that started what we call the credit crash for the next 24 months.

01:09:30.000 The response from the government was not to reform the banking system, but to give them now what we know to be roughly $13 trillion.

01:09:36.000 And according to guys like Carl Denninger, who's a very plugged-in guy, that number's going to double again.

01:09:42.000 And the tragedy is that they could have very easily wiped out every mortgage debt and every credit card debt in America for less than that money.

01:09:50.000 Well, yeah, I mean, Bloomberg reported 9.4 trillion would pay off all mortgages, not just bad mortgages, but, you know, $50 million palaces, $100,000 bungalows.

01:10:03.000 The Congress and the banks are saying 23.7.

01:10:06.000 But I guess that's different types of money they created, and that's not counting all the magical SDRs and these other layers of global currency.

01:10:23.000 Every single credit card debt could have been paid off.

01:10:26.000 So therefore, every citizen in America could be sitting there with no debts at all.

01:10:34.000 The economy is 70% consumption anyway, so the economy would be growing.

01:10:44.000 And what we'd have left are these incredible black holes of debt, which would have to be addressed.

01:10:50.000 And the way to address that would have been to force the banks to write off those debts in real time and suffer the consequences, because they created those debts.

01:10:58.000 So instead of like Warren Buffett, who's now saying, I'm going to have a blockbuster quarter of my life because 75% of his business is probably getting bailed out by the government.

01:11:07.000 It's stock going from $70,000 a share back to $100,000 a share back to $147,000 a share.
