01:18:47.000 The new book, The Death of Money, it sounds like a provocative title, but it's actually not meant to be that provocative.
01:18:54.000 The international monetary system has collapsed three times in the past 100 years.
01:18:59.000 It collapsed in 1914, again in 1939, and again in 1971.
01:19:05.000 So these collapses happen every 30 or 40 years, and it's been a little over 40 years since the last one.
01:19:09.000 Now that doesn't mean it collapses tomorrow like clockwork.
01:19:12.000 It just means that no one should be surprised if it does.
01:19:14.000 And there are plenty of warning signs, official actions, pointing very much in this direction.
01:19:22.000 So what I do in the book is I take the reader through the instability of the system.
01:19:26.000 I say, it's not a question of committing errors in the future.
01:19:29.000 The errors have already been committed.
01:19:30.000 The blunders have already been made.
01:19:32.000 It's like snow that's piled up and we're waiting for the avalanche.
01:19:35.000 We're just waiting for that one snowflake to bring it all tumbling down.
01:19:38.000 So that's actually fairly foreseeable.
01:19:40.000 What I try to do is say, okay, when that happens, because it has happened three times before, what comes next?
01:19:45.000 What will the future international monetary system look like?
01:19:48.000 And then go all the way back to square one.
01:19:50.000 What can investors do today to sort of prepare for that?
01:19:52.000 That's the big picture.
01:19:53.000 You know, my first book, Currency Wars, Came out in 2011, and if you open up to Chapter 8 of Currency Wars, guess what's there?
01:20:00.000 It talks about Ukraine, Gazprom, Russia, natural gas as a weapon, etc.
01:20:05.000 In other words, all the things that are happening today were in my 2011 book.

01:20:28.000 Let's get that specific with regard to the dollar, Alex.
01:20:31.000 You know, when you write a book and it comes out, hopefully you get a lot of things right, but one of the things you ask yourself is, well, did I get anything wrong?
01:20:37.000 Is there anything I might have missed?
01:20:38.000 And looking at the book, which has only been out for a few months, I would say the one thing is things that I thought might take a year or two to play out are actually playing out now.
01:20:46.000 Notice this collapse is happening faster than I thought even when I wrote the book last year.
01:20:50.000 And just to be specific, imagine a stool with three legs and resting on the stool is the dollar.
01:20:56.000 And the three legs are Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia.
01:20:59.000 The three crops, if you will, under the dollar.
01:21:01.000 Let's take them one at a time.
01:21:03.000 Saudi Arabia, that's basically the story of the petrodollar.
01:21:06.000 In 1974, in the late 70s, the dollar almost collapsed at that time.
01:21:11.000 We had 50% inflation between 1977 and 1981.
01:21:15.000 We had three recessions, back to back to back.
01:21:18.000 The price of gold went up 2,000%.
01:21:20.000 It was a complete run on the dollar.
01:21:22.000 Henry Kissinger struck a deal with the Saudi Arabians, with the royal family in Saudi Arabia, to price oil in dollars.
01:21:29.000 Now there is no reason then or now why oil has to be priced in dollars.
01:21:34.000 At the time it could have been priced in Deutschmarks or Japanese Yens, Swiss francs or gold.
01:21:39.000 Today it could be priced in Euros, maybe dollars and the other things.
01:21:42.000 But there's no reason oil has to be priced exclusively in dollars.
01:21:45.000 And that put an enormous prop under the dollar because everyone needs oil. 0.78
01:21:45.000 But it was. 0.78
01:21:50.000 So, if oil is priced in dollars and you need oil, that means you need dollars.
01:21:54.000 People who don't have any other reason to want dollars have to have them to buy the oil.
01:21:59.000 So that was a support for the dollar.
01:22:01.000 Now, what was the other side of the deal?
01:22:02.000 The other side of the deal is that we, the United States, would guarantee the national security of Saudi Arabia.
01:22:07.000 We would prop up the House of Saud. 0.97
01:22:10.000 Now, that deal lasted until last December.
01:22:12.000 Last December, President Obama stabbed the Saudi Arabians in the back by anointing Iran as the regional hegemonic power in the Middle East.
01:22:20.000 Now, what that means is, you know, U.S.
01:22:22.000 is withdrawing power from around the world.
01:22:23.000 That's very obvious, and the President said so in his speech at West Point.
01:22:26.000 But what he wants to do is sort of leave a cop on the beat.
01:22:29.000 So in every hotspot around the world, there's some power that's going to kind of take care of things in the neighborhood, if you want to think of it that way.
01:22:35.000 Well, the U.S.
01:22:36.000 green-lighted Iran as the cop on the beat in the Middle East.
01:22:39.000 We green-lighted their nuclear ambitions.
01:22:41.000 I know there are these talks underway, but the fact is the centrifuges are still spinning.
01:22:45.000 The Iraq reactor is still operating, and that is only good for one thing, which is it produces plutonium, which is only good for one thing, which is making atomic weapons. 0.91
01:22:54.000 And so that's kind of a full speed ahead.
01:22:57.000 So the Saudi Arabians took that as a stab in the back, and they should. 1.00
01:23:00.000 And by the way, in a recent briefing given by a very high-level U.S. officials to the king of Saudi Arabia.
01:23:07.000 They went through this long, you know, 45-minute presentation about all the nuance in our policy with Iran and all that.
01:23:14.000 The king, who I think is 91 or 92 years old, at the end of it, he just grunted and said, they get one, we get one.
01:23:20.000 Those are his exact words.
01:23:22.000 And what he meant was Iran gets a nukes, Saudi Arabia, they get nukes the next day, they'll just fly them in from Pakistan. 0.79
01:23:27.000 So now that we've reneged on our side of the deal, no longer guaranteeing the security of Saudi Arabia, they feel free to renege on their side of the deal, supporting the dollar.
01:23:35.000 So watch for oil to suddenly be priced in euros and other currencies.
01:23:39.000 Now over to China.
01:23:40.000 What's China doing?
01:23:42.000 Kind of painted themselves into a corner.
01:23:44.000 They bought almost $3 trillion worth of US dollar-denominated securities for their reserves.
01:23:50.000 Reserves are just your savings account.
01:23:52.000 So if you make $50,000 and you spend $40,000, you've got $10,000 in savings.
01:23:57.000 You can put it in the bank or the stock market or whatever.
01:23:59.000 It's no different with countries.
01:24:01.000 When countries run a trade surplus, they have savings, and they have to put it somewhere.
01:24:04.000 And in China's case, those savings go into the trillions of dollars.
01:24:08.000 They put all their savings into, unfortunately for them, US Treasury notes.
01:24:12.000 Now, there's an old saying in banking, if I owe you a million dollars, I have a problem.
01:24:17.000 But if I owe you a billion dollars, you have a problem because you have to collect the money from me.
01:24:21.000 So since we owe China three trillion dollars, they have a problem. 0.64
01:24:25.000 They can't dump their securities.
01:24:26.000 They might want to, but the market's not that big.
01:24:29.000 So what are they doing instead?
01:24:30.000 They're buying gold by the thousands of tons.
01:24:33.000 And just to put that in perspective, they're only about 33,000 tons of official gold in the world.
01:24:39.000 Official gold means the gold held by central banks and sovereign wealth funds and the finance ministries and so forth.
01:24:45.000 So it's only about 33,000 tons in the world.
01:24:47.000 China has bought about 3,000 tons or 10% of all the official gold in the world just in the last four years.
01:24:53.000 Now they have not disclosed this by the way.
01:24:55.000 You have to gather this from mining output, Hong Kong imports, They're covert sources.
01:25:00.000 They're using military and intelligence assets to do this.
01:25:03.000 But the evidence is there, and this is all in my book as well.
01:25:06.000 So why are they doing that?
01:25:08.000 Well, they're creating a hedge position.
01:25:10.000 In other words, they can't dump the treasuries.
01:25:12.000 But if we inflate the dollar, which we're trying to do, Janet Yellen has said we need more inflation.
01:25:17.000 Inflation is just theft from savers.
01:25:19.000 I mean, inflation sounds like a technical word.
01:25:21.000 Just think of it as someone reaching in your pocket and stealing your money.
01:25:23.000 That's what inflation is.
01:25:24.000 So Janet Yellen says we need more inflation.
01:25:27.000 In other words, we need more theft from savers.
01:25:29.000 Well, China's the biggest saver in the world. 1.00
01:25:31.000 They got $3 trillion, as I mentioned.
01:25:33.000 So if we inflate the dollar, they're going to lose on their paper.
01:25:35.000 But if they have enough gold, gold's going to go up a lot.
01:25:38.000 So they're going to lose on the paper, but they're going to make it up on the gold.
01:25:41.000 So that's the way to hedge their position without dumping the Treasury securities.
01:25:44.000 That's what the Chinese are doing. 1.00
01:25:46.000 We're in a financial war with Russia.
01:25:46.000 Over to Russia.
01:25:48.000 Of course, Russia invaded Crimea.
01:25:50.000 It's causing trouble in Eastern Ukraine.
01:25:53.000 No one, left, right or center, thinks there should be a military response to that, and there's not going to be.
01:25:58.000 But the U.S.
01:25:58.000 doesn't want to be seen to be doing nothing, kind of rolling over, playing dead.
01:26:02.000 So the President has announced economic sanctions, which are a form of financial warfare.
01:26:07.000 By the way, we've been in a financial war with Iran, or had been, from 2012 up until the end of 2013.
01:26:13.000 But the President sort of called a truce in that war and eased up on the sanctions on Iran.
01:26:18.000 That was part of that stab in the back I mentioned earlier.
01:26:21.000 But now we're in a financial war with Russia.
01:26:23.000 By the way, these sanctions are fairly tame, you know, it sort of amounts to the fact that a few oligarchs may not get to go to the Super Bowl next year.
01:26:29.000 But the bottom line on all that is Russia's different from Iran. 0.74
01:26:31.000 They can fight back.
01:26:32.000 They can seize U.S. 0.94
01:26:33.000 assets in Russia.
01:26:34.000 They can dump U.S. 0.93
01:26:35.000 Treasury securities, raise our interest rates, sink our stock market.
01:26:38.000 They can unleash their hackers to shut down the New York Stock Exchange.
01:26:40.000 So, the U.S.
01:26:41.000 has to be careful about going too far in that realm, because Russia can fight back.
01:26:45.000 So, all three of these legs...
01:26:46.000 Let me just throw this in.

01:28:16.000 I've met with members of the Federal Open Market Committee.

01:28:20.000 And privately, not publicly, but privately, they will tell you they don't know what they're doing.

01:29:33.000 Once you lose it, it's very hard to get back.

01:39:25.000 He bought the whole thing.

01:39:29.000 It's right-of-way, mining rights adjacent to the right-of-way, rail, rolling stock, yards, switches, signals, etc.

01:39:38.000 It moves hard assets as freight.
01:39:39.000 Coal, corn, wheat, steel, etc.
01:39:42.000 So a railroad is the ultimate hard asset.

01:39:48.000 What was Warren Buffett's next big purchase?

01:39:53.000 And by the way, he doesn't need the Keystone Pipeline because he can move his own oil on his own railroad.

01:40:00.000 So Warren Buffett is a guy who's dumping dollars as fast as he can, getting into hard assets.

01:40:12.000 He still owns oil.
01:40:13.000 He still owns natural gas.

01:40:15.000 This is very similar, by the way, to what happened in the famous Weimar hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic in Germany in 1922.

01:40:25.000 The losers were the middle class savers. 0.99
01:40:27.000 If you had money in the bank, a pension, an annuity, an insurance policy, retirement income, a steady job, you were the loser because all of your fixed income assets were wiped out.

01:40:42.000 It doesn't matter what the currency does.

01:40:49.000 Then they went around and bought up all the losers, consolidated industrial holdings into relatively few hands.

01:41:01.000 He's dumping paper mining and getting into hard assets.

01:41:06.000 And, you know, Alex, when we talk about this collapse, I think the government and the Federal Reserve would like to avoid it, but there's another part of them that knows it's coming.
01:41:15.000 So they've got their own plan B. Like we said earlier, you don't have to break into a safe in the middle of the night.

01:41:30.000 That's a 10-year plan to make the SDR, that's the Special Drawing Right, SDR stands for Special Drawing Right, the Global Reserve Currency.

01:41:39.000 Well, it stands for Special Drawing Right.
01:41:40.000 That's a really geeky name.
01:41:42.000 What it is is world money.
01:41:43.000 So why did they call it an SDR?
01:41:45.000 Well, they knew if they called it world money, it might scare people.
01:41:47.000 So they gave it this really, you know, technical name so people would sort of yawn and look somewhere else.
01:41:54.000 It's kind of like the Federal Reserve.
01:41:55.000 I mean, the Federal Reserve is the central bank of the United States.
01:41:57.000 Why did they not call it the central bank of the United States in 1913?
01:42:00.000 Because they knew that Americans hate central banks, so they called it the Federal Reserve.
01:42:04.000 Well, the same thing with this world money.
01:42:06.000 It's the special drawing right.
01:42:09.000 By the way, there's nothing new about SDRs.
01:42:10.000 They were invented in 1969.
01:42:12.000 They've been issued from time to time.
01:42:13.000 They were actually issued in 2009.
01:42:15.000 I might have been the only guy outside the IMF to notice.
01:42:18.000 But this is just printed money.
01:42:20.000 And by the way, the easiest way to understand it, it's not that technical, the Federal Reserve has a printing press.
01:42:24.000 They can print dollars.
01:42:25.000 The European Central Bank has a printing press.
01:42:27.000 They can print Euros.
01:42:29.000 The IMF has a printing press.
01:42:30.000 They can print SDRs.
01:42:32.000 And they do.
01:42:32.000 And they have.
01:42:33.000 And they're not backed by anything.
01:42:34.000 It'll be highly inflationary.
01:42:37.000 So the next time there's a liquidity crisis, remember the last time there was a liquidity crisis, and a financial panic in 2008 the fed bailed out the whole world they we know they printed four trillion dollars but that was just the tip of the iceberg they did tens of trillions of dollars of swaps guarantees guarantee with the fdc guaranteed every bank deposit in america guaranteed every money market fund in america propped up the system for the benefit of you know the elites the power leads who who actually benefit the most from that but there's there's But there's a problem.

01:43:07.000 In other words, they haven't unwound any of that.
01:43:09.000 A lot of that's still in place.
01:43:10.000 So when the next crisis comes, it's going to be bigger than the Fed.
01:43:13.000 They're not going to be able to go to $8 trillion or $12 trillion on their balance sheet because they'll destroy confidence.
01:43:19.000 So where is the liquidity going to come from?
01:43:21.000 It's going to come from the IMF in the form of SDRs.
01:43:24.000 It will be highly inflationary, but no one will understand what it's coming from.
01:43:27.000 I call the IMF Transparently non-transparent.
01:43:30.000 What I mean by that is, they're transparent in the sense that they put these plans on their website, but they're non-transparent in the sense that no one understands them because it's all technical.
01:43:37.000 Sure, exactly.
01:43:37.000 They try to play both sides.
01:43:40.000 And they consolidate power on the way up in the bubble.
01:43:42.000 They consolidate power during the collapse, always posing as the savior.
01:43:46.000 They never get in trouble.
01:43:48.000 So you've broken down the technicals beautifully, and I know your book gets into more detail.
01:43:52.000 How bad is it going to get?
01:43:53.000 Because they're funding destabilizations in Eastern Europe.
01:43:56.000 They're funding this new caliphate running around, starting a civil war, blowing up Shiite mosques. 0.91
01:44:05.000 I mean, look, I understand they don't know what they're doing on many levels, trying to put it off so they can say they tried to do it.
01:44:10.000 But on the other hand, they're trying to destabilize things at the same time.
01:44:14.000 I mean, the evidence is there.
01:44:15.000 What do they think they're going to get out of this?
01:44:17.000 Where is America going?
01:44:20.000 How bad is it going to get?
01:44:21.000 And what's the time frame?
01:44:22.000 Because am I wrong in saying that we're seeing major signs that the creep towards the exits at the movie theater is starting to go a little bit faster here?
01:44:31.000 Because it looks like the dollar's in trouble here.
01:44:35.000 Well, the dollar's in trouble, but so are global capital markets, and the signs are everywhere.
01:44:39.000 Actually, let me give you a very concrete example.
01:44:41.000 So we're watching the stock indices, and I guess the stock market's off a tiny bit today, but they've been going up and up and up.
01:44:46.000 They're at all-time highs.
01:44:47.000 They're at record highs.
01:44:48.000 And the mainstream media says, hey, happy days are here again.
01:44:50.000 Stock market's at an all-time high.
01:44:52.000 Get out there and buy some stocks.
01:44:53.000 Meanwhile, this is going up on very high leverage, meaning borrowed money.
01:44:56.000 So New York Stock Exchange leverage is at an all-time high, and it's going up on very thin volume, which means that not many people are participating.
01:45:03.000 But meanwhile, the experts, the pros, are buying put options.
01:45:06.000 Now, a put option is a way to bet that the market's going down.
01:45:09.000 So let's say I have a lot of stock, and it's been going up, and I've been making a lot of money.
01:45:13.000 Well, I might want to get out, but if I start selling the stock, I might be the snowflake that causes the avalanche, and I don't want that to happen.
01:45:20.000 So what they do is they go over here to a different market.
01:45:23.000 They buy put options, which is a bet the market's going to go down.
01:45:26.000 Now, remember the Chinese?
01:45:27.000 They got the paper, but they also have the gold.
01:45:29.000 The pros have stocks, but they also have their hedging.
01:45:32.000 So when the market crashes, the little guy is going to get wiped out on his 401k.
01:45:36.000 But the big guys, yeah, they'll lose money on their stocks, but they're going to make money on their puts and lock in their profits.
01:45:40.000 This is the kind of thing that's going on behind the scenes.
01:45:43.000 You have to be a bit of an expert, a bit of a technician to see it.
01:45:46.000 But it is visible.
01:45:46.000 All this is publicly available.
01:45:49.000 And it's accelerating, correct?
01:45:50.000 They're not just hedging now.
01:45:52.000 From what I've seen, they're piling on to getting out of all the pop assets on the Nasdaq and the Dow Jones, and they're moving into the most hardcore of stable assets.
01:46:05.000 Right.
01:46:05.000 Well, some of them are doing that.
01:46:07.000 Warren Buffett's a good example.
01:46:08.000 But for people who want to hedge themselves without... because remember, if you start selling the stock, you might be the guy who causes the avalanche.
01:46:14.000 What they're doing is keeping the stock to some extent, but buying these put options.
01:46:18.000 So now they're hedged.
01:46:19.000 The market could go down.
01:46:19.000 They don't care because whatever they lose in the stocks, they'll make in the puts.
01:46:22.000 But the little guy is not a... How long can this go on?
01:46:25.000 How long can this go on?
01:46:27.000 Well, one of the hard things is some of these things can go on longer than you expect.
01:46:30.000 It won't go on forever.
01:46:31.000 I don't think it'll go on much longer.
01:46:32.000 I don't think we'll get two or three years down the road.
01:46:34.000 We might not get one year down the road.
01:46:35.000 I don't want to say it's going to happen tomorrow because the thing about bubbles is they go on longer than we expect.
01:46:40.000 But I wouldn't be waiting for the day.
01:46:42.000 See, a lot of people, you know, I talk about this all over the world, Alex, and people invariably come to me and they say something to the effect of, Hey Jim, call me at 3 o'clock the day before it crashes.
01:46:52.000 I'll sell my stocks and buy gold.
01:46:53.000 And I say, it doesn't work that way.
01:46:55.000 I'm not going to know the day before.
01:46:56.000 I can see it coming for sure.
01:46:58.000 But I'm not going to know the day before.
01:46:59.000 The time to prepare is now.
01:47:00.000 The time to get out of stocks, get some gold.
01:47:03.000 Don't go overboard.
01:47:04.000 I recommend 10% gold.
01:47:05.000 Other kinds of hard assets, fine art, et cetera.
01:47:09.000 The time to do that is now.
01:47:10.000 By the way, for the small investor, when you want gold, when gold starts gapping up, when I say gapping up, $100 an ounce, boom.

01:47:18.000 Next day, up $300 an ounce.
01:47:20.000 A week goes by.
01:47:21.000 It's up $1,000 an ounce.
01:47:22.000 It's running away.
01:47:23.000 That's when most people are going to say, oh, gee, I better get some gold.
01:47:25.000 Guess what?
01:47:26.000 You're not going to be able to find it.
01:47:27.000 The mint will stop shipping.
01:47:28.000 Your local dealer will be out.
01:47:30.000 You want to get it beforehand.
01:47:32.000 The government wealth funds.

01:47:34.000 That's exactly right.
01:47:35.000 Look at the Chinese government, the University of Texas.
01:47:38.000 They've all been quietly hoarding it while they use all these naked shorts and things to drive down the overall price of gold.
01:47:44.000 But as real inflation kicks in, in all commodities, I don't think they can suppress the price of gold much longer.
01:47:50.000 I would imagine it's going to go up in the fall.
01:47:52.000 What do you say?
01:47:55.000 Well, it usually does go up in the fourth quarter.
01:47:57.000 Fourth quarter is usually strong for gold.
01:47:58.000 I think the technical side of it is good.
01:48:00.000 I was in Switzerland recently, and on this last trip, instead of visiting the banks, which I usually do, I went to see the guys who actually store gold, the top secure logistics firms in the world, and the guys who actually refine gold, so people handling the physical stuff.
01:48:13.000 They told me stories that'll make your hair stand on end.
01:48:15.000 I talked to the largest refiner in Switzerland.
01:48:18.000 He said he's working triple shifts, so 24 hours a day.
01:48:21.000 He's producing 20 tons of gold a week.
01:48:25.000 The Chinese are taking half, so there's 10 tons of gold a week going to China, times 50 weeks. 0.55
01:48:29.000 You know, that's 500 tons a year.
01:48:30.000 Remember I mentioned earlier, there's not that much official gold in the world.
01:48:34.000 So he said the Chinese want more, but he said, I won't sell it to them because I have to take care of my regular customers.
01:48:39.000 And he said, for the first time, I'm having trouble sourcing gold.
01:48:43.000 Meaning, you know, when you're a refiner, you take gold from, you know, scrap and jewelry and miners and other 400 ounce bars, and you re-refine it into what the Chinese want, which are one kilo bars of 4-9 purity.
01:48:54.000 He said, I'm having trouble sourcing it.
01:48:56.000 I said, when was the last time that happened?
01:48:58.000 He said, this never happened.
01:49:00.000 So the technical setup is very strong.
01:49:03.000 Gold is just, you know, the reason gold had a weak year in 2013 was because The Exchange Trade Fund, GLD, that's the ticker symbol, disgorged 500 tons.
01:49:13.000 That was a raid on the GLD warehouse by the big banks who control that warehouse, because they were sending that gold to China.
01:49:20.000 Well, you can't do that twice.
01:49:21.000 I mean, you can do it once, because they had, I guess, I think about 1,100 tons at the beginning of the year.
01:49:26.000 So take away 500 tons.
01:49:27.000 Now you're down to 600 tons.
01:49:28.000 So now is the time, in your view, to buy gold that people never do.
01:49:31.000 They only buy once it's racing up.
01:49:33.000 Of course, I buy when it's low.
01:49:34.000 I bought most of my gold at about $300 to $500 and haven't sold any of it.

01:55:25.000 But we were very morally upright people on average when we had the Great Depression, and it was rough.
01:55:31.000 And I think what we're about to see could be even worse.
01:55:33.000 What do you briefly say to that, James Rickards, best-selling author and top analyst, about what a depression would look like with this type of population?
01:55:43.000 Well, if you want to know what a depression looks like, look around, Alex.
01:55:46.000 We're in a depression.
01:55:48.000 This depression started in 2006.
01:55:50.000 and it will continue indefinitely until we get some structural changes, which I don't see on the horizon.
01:55:56.000 Now, a lot of people don't know what the meaning of a depression is.
01:55:59.000 They assume it means continuous declining GDP, but that is not the definition.
01:56:03.000 You can have growth in a depression.
01:56:05.000 What it means is the growth is depressed relative to trend.
01:56:08.000 So a long-term trend of growth in the United States is, say, 3%, 3.5%.
01:56:12.000 And by the way, in the short run, you can grow 4%, 5%, or even 6%, as we did during some of the years when Ronald Reagan was president because you're bringing unemployed people back into the labor force at a faster rate.
01:56:25.000 So trend is 3.5%.
01:56:27.000 Short-term growth is 4%, 5%.
01:56:29.000 But if you're actually growing at 1%, 2%, which we are, that's the depression.
01:56:33.000 It's the gap between the potential and the actual.
01:56:35.000 And that represents lost wealth, and you never make it up.
01:56:38.000 So, I mean, you have to be 90 years old today to have a living memory of the Great Depression.
01:56:43.000 So essentially, basically no one knows what it feels like.
01:56:46.000 Well, except we do.
01:56:47.000 It feels like this.
01:56:48.000 And I've had people say, well, Jim, if we're in a depression, where are the soup lines?
01:56:51.000 The soup lines are at Whole Foods because you get your food stamps on a little debit card and you can walk into Whole Foods and get some gourmet soup to go.
01:56:59.000 So it's not that we don't have soup lines, but they're just in the supermarkets, not on the streets.
01:57:04.000 But you look at labor force participation, you look at real wages, you look at unemployed, underemployed, people working part-time, we should have full-time jobs, actual growth.
01:57:13.000 We're in a depression now.
01:57:14.000 Now, could it get worse?
01:57:15.000 Yes, it could get a lot worse, because you can put a financial panic or a financial collapse on top of a depressed economy, and that's what I see coming.
01:57:23.000 Sure, I mean, if the welfare checks don't show up, or if they don't have the buying power, it's the same of them not showing up.
01:57:29.000 Cities will burn.
01:57:29.000 I mean, that's just a fact.
01:57:30.000 And the Pentagon knows that.
01:57:32.000 Do they think a bunch of armored vehicles are going to keep everybody safe?
01:57:37.000 Well, they're hoping it doesn't come to that, but they're certainly prepared for it.
01:57:41.000 I mean, we see, you know, not news really, the militarization of local police.
01:57:44.000 As I say, these are not your local police force, they're not people who get kittens out of trees.
01:57:49.000 They've got flashbang grenades, high-tech battery rams, night vision goggles, tear gas, automatic weapons, you know, body armor, armor personnel carriers, and they'll break down your door for, you know, a simple You know, credit card fraud or something.
01:58:02.000 And there was a case the other day where, sadly, they threw a grenade and blew the face off a two-year-old child sleeping in a crib.
01:58:09.000 So that's your local police force, huh?
01:58:11.000 But if you're illegal and have an aggravated felony, you can come right on in.
01:58:15.000 I mean, this is becoming Bizarro World.

02:01:31.000 Well, the next financial crisis will be the worst in history, Alex, and it's not just an opinion or a wild guess.
02:01:36.000 It's actually based on the science of complexity, which I talk about in both my books, The Death Money and Currency Wars.
02:01:43.000 Complexity theory basically looks at the scale of a system.
02:01:47.000 It's a fancy word for size, but here's the point.
02:01:50.000 When you triple the scale of a system, you don't triple the risk.
02:01:54.000 You increase the risk by an exponential factor ten or a hundred times.
02:01:59.000 So in 2008, what did we hear about ad nauseum?
02:02:01.000 Too big to fail, too big to fail, too big to fail.
02:02:03.000 Well, guess what?
02:02:04.000 The five biggest banks in the United States in 2008 today are bigger, They have a larger percentage of all the banking assets.
02:02:11.000 Their derivatives books are bigger.
02:02:12.000 So everything that was too big in 2008 is bigger today, which means the next collapse will be exponentially bigger.
02:02:19.000 And it was all the Fed could do to put out the fire last time.
02:02:22.000 The next one's going to be bigger than the Fed.
02:02:24.000 It's going to be over to the IMF.
02:02:26.000 And there's no, by the way, I talked earlier about these special joint rights.
02:02:28.000 That's the world money, the IMF issues.
02:02:30.000 Well, there's no way they're issuing that without Russian, Chinese, and other people's approval because they're all members of the IMF.
02:02:36.000 The G20 is sort of the de facto board of directors of the IMF.
02:02:40.000 And they're not going to say, hey, let's just issue a bunch of SDRs so we can prop up the dollar.
02:02:43.000 They're going to say, let's issue SDRs so we can bury the dollar once and for all.
02:02:47.000 Now, the impact of this is just inflationary at best, possibly hyperinflationary.
02:02:54.000 It doesn't mean the dollar is going to go away.
02:02:55.000 You'll still have dollars, but they'll be like Mexican pesos.
02:02:58.000 Notice the dollar will be a local currency that you use to go down to, you know, restaurant or hairdresser or whatever, but it won't be used for the big things.
02:03:06.000 I say the big things, the price of oil, settlement of balance of payments between countries, probably the financial statements of the hundred or so largest global corporations.
02:03:16.000 So, you know, a few years from now, when you get your financial statement from IBM or General Electric, it'll all be stated in SDRs because they're really global corporations.
02:03:24.000 So this SDR is the coming thing.
02:03:26.000 Now, it might not work.
02:03:27.000 It will definitely be tried.
02:03:28.000 As I say, the blueprint's already there.
02:03:29.000 It's on the IMF website.
02:03:31.000 Secretary Geithner talked about it.
02:03:32.000 He said he was open to it.
02:03:33.000 Madame Lagarde, Christine Lagarde, head of the IMF, talks about it all the time.
02:03:37.000 So, the plan is already there.
02:03:38.000 It will definitely be tried.
02:03:40.000 Whether it works or not is a different question.
02:03:42.000 If people lose confidence in the dollar, why would they have any more confidence in another form of paper money called the SDR?

02:11:00.000 All right, shifting gears into the big subject and giving him the floor to break it down, Insider Trading 911, please tell us, sir, Again, for the folks that just tuned in, what you were doing at the time, your background, James Rickards, again, best-selling author of The Death of Money and of Currency Wars, joins us.
02:11:19.000 He's been on with us for over an hour, getting into the current financial situation.
02:11:23.000 But now, the big enchilada.
02:11:26.000 We know it was Inder Spiegel and a few other publications, if you just joined us, that there was insider trading connected to the Executive Director of the CIA, Buzzy Krongaard.
02:11:35.000 That investigation got shut down.
02:11:38.000 He was inside one of these major financial institutions while this was going on and is one of the only witnesses to what happened.
02:11:47.000 I want to give you the floor, James.
02:11:48.000 I know you have a lot of courage to talk about this.
02:11:50.000 Tell us exactly what you saw.
02:11:53.000 Well, a couple things, Alex.
02:11:54.000 The first thing, I think the most important one, you have to distinguish between inside trading and what some commentators call inside job.
02:12:03.000 And they get blurred together.
02:12:06.000 Insider trading just means somebody knew about the attack in advance and they went into markets and either sold stocks or bought put options, which is the same thing as selling stocks, or they bought bonds, which are different, to make money when the attack happened.
02:12:18.000 That is non-debatable.
02:12:20.000 I cover this in Chapter 1 of my book.
02:12:21.000 It happened.
02:12:22.000 There was insider trading.
02:12:23.000 There's tons of evidence of it.
02:12:25.000 When I say evidence, I mean statistical, forensic, anecdotal.
02:12:28.000 It absolutely happened.
02:12:29.000 Now, inside job is different.
02:12:32.000 That somehow suggests that the government, U.S.
02:12:34.000 government, had something to do with it.
02:12:36.000 I've seen no evidence of that.
02:12:37.000 And by the way, I went down there.
02:12:39.000 Now, after 9-11, I mean, I'm talking in the immediate days, not six months or a year later when it was a memorial and a tourist attraction.
02:12:47.000 I'm talking when flames were still coming out of the rubble.
02:12:51.000 The military set up a secure perimeter around lower Manhattan.
02:12:54.000 There were various checkpoints at Canal Street and Church Street, if you know the area.
02:12:59.000 You needed security clearance or some official business, or you had to be in the maintenance of one of those buildings, et cetera, to get inside that perimeter.
02:13:08.000 I was inside that perimeter.
02:13:10.000 I went to the roof of the American Express building, which after the two towers and World Trade Center 7 came down, the American Express building was the tallest building, this is in the World Financial Center, across the street from the World Trade Center.
02:13:21.000 I went out on the roof, it was not an observation deck, it was a roof.
02:13:24.000 I went out there and I looked straight down into the flaming ruins of the World Trade Center.
02:13:30.000 And I was reminded of Rodin's sculpture, the Gates of Hell.
02:13:34.000 I thought the Gates of Hell had been opened and I was looking into them.
02:13:37.000 That's what I saw.
02:13:38.000 So, you know, these armchair engineers who talk about controlled demolition and all this stuff, I mean, there's zero proof for that.
02:13:44.000 That's a lot of nonsense.
02:13:45.000 Some guy said to me, oh, there are 2,000 engineers.
02:13:48.000 No, no, I understand your proviso that you're not a 9-11 truther, but specifically insider trading, prior knowledge that something was coming on American and United.
02:13:59.000 Well, first of all, there is a ton of statistical evidence.
02:14:02.000 By the way, the 9-11 Commission never said that there wasn't insider trading.
02:14:07.000 What they said was that they found no evidence of insider trading, but if you don't look, you're not going to find the evidence.
02:14:12.000 That was sort of a lawyer's wiggle room to get out of actually dealing with the issues.
02:14:17.000 The 9-11 Commission report itself does not say That there wasn't insider trading.
02:14:21.000 Now, about a year after 9-11, I was asked by the Central Intelligence Agency to join a project that looked into the possibility of a future attack.
02:14:29.000 And what we said was, OK, if there was insider trading ahead of 9-11, could you have seen it?
02:14:35.000 And if another spectacular attack was coming, would there be insider trading again?
02:14:40.000 Could you detect it from market signals?
02:14:42.000 Could you get a FISA warrant, break down the door and stop the attack?
02:14:45.000 And we spent years studying that.
02:14:47.000 And I was a co-director of that project.
02:14:49.000 And I met with the people at the SEC who did the investigation for the 9-11 Commission.
02:14:54.000 I worked with the CIA on this.
02:14:56.000 I worked with hundreds of volunteers, Nobel Prize winners, etc.
02:15:00.000 So I was very, very involved in this, and we wrote the definitive study of this.
02:15:04.000 Now, here's the thing.
02:15:06.000 If you find, if you're a detective and you find a body with a bullet hole in the head, but there was no witnesses, it doesn't mean you can't prove the crime.
02:15:12.000 It just means you need some other kind of evidence.
02:15:14.000 If you don't have eyewitness evidence, you use DNA.
02:15:17.000 Well, the DNA equivalent in stock markets is statistical evidence, and there were numerous academic studies, and they're all cited in my book.
02:15:23.000 My book has 300 footnotes.
02:15:25.000 I don't make things up.
02:15:25.000 There's tons of documentation.
02:15:27.000 Any reader can go find the source material.
02:15:30.000 There was no question that the put-buying, by the way, put-buying is a bet that the stock's going to go down, before 9-11 was enormous.
02:15:37.000 It would be as if, you know, a guy ordered one ham and cheese sandwich for lunch every day for 10 years, and then one day he ordered 300 ham and cheese sandwiches.
02:15:45.000 That's the kind of put-buying we saw in the last five trading days prior to 9-11.
02:15:49.000 I met at CIA headquarters with John Mulhern.
02:15:51.000 John Mulhern was the head of one of the four largest specialists on the New York Stock Exchange.
02:15:56.000 He was the market maker in American Airlines stock.
02:15:59.000 And I looked at him and said, John, was there insider trading in American Airlines ahead of 9-11?
02:16:03.000 He said, it was the most blatant case of insider trading I've ever seen.
02:16:09.000 By the way, since my book came out, Alex, it's kind of interesting.
02:16:12.000 There are people with additional information who have contacted me.
02:16:16.000 They've come forward almost like they want to get something off their chest.
02:16:19.000 So there are stories that are not in my book because these people contacted me after the book came out.
02:16:23.000 But one of the most chilling stories, a fellow came to me.
02:16:27.000 He was a dealer at one of the so-called primary dealers.
02:16:29.000 They're the biggest banks in the government securities market.
02:16:32.000 He handles sovereign wealth funds, which are the biggest traders in the government securities market.
02:16:36.000 So here's a guy, the biggest trader for the biggest dealers in U.S.
02:16:40.000 government securities.
02:16:41.000 On September 10th, the day before 9-11, he was actually out of the office at an outing.
02:16:45.000 His phone rang.
02:16:46.000 His trading assistant said, hey, there's someone on the phone.
02:16:48.000 They want to buy $2 billion of two-year Treasury notes.
02:16:53.000 $2 billion is an enormous order.
02:16:55.000 The biggest firms, they might trade $100 million at a time, or sometimes larger.
02:16:58.000 $2 billion of two-year notes is an off-the-charts order.
02:17:02.000 This customer had never called before.

02:18:04.000 is going to push back with economic sanctions, you want to mitigate the impact of the sanctions by lightening your load of U.S.

02:18:14.000 government is not that they were in on it, I don't think it's nonsense, but that they weren't looking then, they're not looking now, and these techniques that you need to look at are not that difficult because hedge funds do it every day.

02:20:40.000 That doesn't make you a criminal or an insider trader, it just makes you actually a very smart trader.
02:20:44.000 This is what's called the piggyback, or technically the name for it, is signal amplification.

02:20:54.000 I mean, if you told one person, I found a bunch of gold laying around at the foot of this hill, and you know, in 10 hours there'd be 100 people out there looking for gold, there'd be people Looking for gold 100 years after the gold was already picked up.

02:25:46.000 And I do think, as I said, the next crisis is going to be bigger.

02:25:58.000 By the way, if you look at the very low volatility of the last five years, the period it resembles most was 2002 to 2007.
02:26:05.000 In other words, the period from 2009 to 2014, if you graph it, By various metrics, it looks exactly like the period from 2002 to 2007.
02:26:14.000 And we all know what happened next, so get ready.
02:26:18.000 And the derivatives overhang hasn't been dialed back, it's only been increased.
02:26:24.000 Well, that's right.
02:26:24.000 And by the way, that's another interesting phenomena.
02:26:26.000 This is a little bit technical, but the Fed is now experimenting with a massive exercise in what's called reverse repo.
02:26:32.000 And I'll explain that very simply.
02:26:34.000 Reverse repo is the Fed has all these government securities.
02:26:37.000 Well, they printed money and they bought the government securities from the dealers, from the banks.
02:26:37.000 How did they get them?
02:26:41.000 And that's how they print money and get it out to the banking system.
02:26:44.000 The problem is the dealers and the banks need the government securities as collateral for the derivatives because they want to leverage 10 to 1 or 100 to 1, etc.
02:26:53.000 Do the derivatives to prop up the asset markets.
02:26:55.000 But when I do a derivative with you, I do a swap with you, you're like, hey, Jim, how do I know you're good for the money?
02:27:01.000 Well, one of the ways you know is I'll send you treasury securities as collateral.
02:27:05.000 So that's your guarantee that I'm going to perform my end of the deal.
02:27:08.000 But what happens when the Fed buys up all the securities and the banks no longer have the securities to post as collateral to prop up the derivatives, which are propping up the stock market?
02:27:18.000 Well, the Fed's solution to that is they are now lending the securities back to the dealers on a short-term overnight basis and taking cash in return.
02:27:25.000 So on the one hand, they're printing money to buy the securities.
02:27:28.000 On the other hand, they're lending them back to the dealers overnight so they can post as collateral.
02:27:32.000 That's how bad things are.
02:27:33.000 So they're reshelling all these fraudulent financial instruments again?
02:27:41.000 Well, technically re-lending, but they're making them available through these so-called reverse repos.
02:27:45.000 But that's right.
02:27:45.000 But they buy them permanently by printing money, and then they lend them back temporarily.
02:27:50.000 You say, why would you do that?
02:27:51.000 Well, so that they can have collateral to support the derivatives books to prop up the stock market.
02:27:56.000 I've been doing this too long, but I actually understand all these technicalities.
02:28:02.000 It's what I do professionally, and it's just a part Well, I appreciate you giving us extra time.

02:28:56.000 Well, I had a meeting in the office of the Secretary of Defense, and I told a very senior official there, I said, look, the day will come when your destroyer, your cruiser, will pull up to a fuel depot in Singapore, and you'll say to the operator, fill her up with fuel, and the operator will say, fine, pay me in special joint rights, pay me in SDRs, and for the first time, you're going to have a forward-deployed military that you have to finance in a currency that you don't print.

02:29:21.000 And then this individual said to me, you know, I hear you, it does sound like a national security threat, but the Treasury really doesn't like it when we talk about the dollar.
