00:05:08.000 Sex trafficking fears have officials asking FBI for help.

00:05:13.000 A total of 500 juveniles have been reported missing in DC since the beginning of this year.

00:05:17.000 The startling number has forced the hands of several officials who've written a letter to call on special help from the Justice Department in investigating the matter.

00:05:24.000 So a letter was sent to James Comey and also Jeff Sessions.

00:05:30.000 And this was...

00:05:33.000 This was done by the Congressional Black Caucus.

00:05:36.000 So the chairman, Cedric Richmond, a Democrat from Louisiana, sent the letter.

00:05:41.000 And he says he wanted us to devote the resources necessary to determine these developments are an anomaly or whether they are indicative of an underlying trend that needs to be addressed.

00:06:26.000 So, you know, you can't look at D.C. crime facts and say, oh, wow, it's all happening in D.C. It encompasses the larger area.

00:06:33.000 And the strange thing about this story, Rob, I don't know how closely you were following it on social media because it really blew up on social media.

00:06:40.000 Well, I know the police came out and said, hey, wait, it's just the fact that we're tweeting these out.

00:06:45.000 This happens all the time, essentially, is what they said, which is even scarier.

00:06:53.000 Really spearheaded this whole thing with the hashtag missing DC girls by tweeting out the pictures, tweeting out the stories, getting all of this out.

00:07:09.000 We didn't actually want you to care about these missing children.

00:07:16.000 They ended up following it up saying, oh, we found them all.

00:07:21.000 Well, then why are you tweeting it out like that in the first place?

00:07:23.000 So it was kind of a strange happenstance there with the whole D.C. police tweeting that out, and then the response on social media, and then their response as well.

00:07:33.000 Because I think for most people, obviously, considering the hashtag Pizzagate craze and everything that went down with that, anytime stuff like this gets brought up on social media, it's going to blow up.

00:07:43.000 It's just going to blow up, and there's nothing that they can do about it.

00:07:45.000 But I think it'll be interesting to see, Rob, because...

00:07:50.000 Obviously, we, and Alex has made this very clear, we want to fight child trafficking.

00:09:14.000 And, yeah, since 2007, the National Human Trafficking Hotline has received reports of 22,191 sex trafficking cases.

00:09:26.000 And in 2016, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimated that one in six endangered runaways were involved in sex trafficking.

00:09:35.000 There it is right there.

00:09:37.000 And I think the scariest part to me about this is, okay, the numbers are obviously shocking.

00:09:44.000 Then you hear stories about people like Laura Silsby, who's actually involved with the procurement and supposed to be helping these kids.

00:09:53.000 They're supposed to be helping these kids.

00:09:55.000 Well, she does help them. 0.80

00:09:56.000 She's part of the Amber Alert system now.

00:09:58.000 Yeah, helps filter them into the traffic.

00:10:01.000 So you've got people like Laura Sillsby, and I'm sure it doesn't stop there.

00:10:04.000 That's who we know of, who's also affiliated with the Clintons, who's affiliated with the Podestas, and it goes down the line.

00:10:10.000 But when you've got a person like Laura Sillsby, who's in a position of power, dealing with these children, who has access to these children, who works with these children in Haiti, I mean, now all of a sudden, you've got a serious issue.

00:10:23.000 A lot of these children probably don't have mothers and fathers that keep track of them, that are going to be worried.

00:10:28.000 Those are the kids that they target for human sex trafficking.

00:10:33.000 And in one of the clips I showed, it was the press conference of a bunch of California law enforcement officials who got together and said, you know, they were talking about the 474 busts that happened earlier this year.

00:10:50.000 And I believe it's the sheriff of that county.

00:10:52.000 I don't know the name of the county.

00:10:53.000 But she's asking him about, one of the reporters is asking about how, you know, where these children come from.

00:11:01.000 70% of these children come from the foster care system.

00:11:05.000 70%.

00:11:07.000 That's huge.

00:11:09.000 And that's just kind of glossed over.

00:11:11.000 Like, oh, well, 70% of them come from foster care.

00:11:13.000 Another thing that goes into my head when I think about this stuff, because it's probably been going on for a long time, and this is just way out there.

00:11:19.000 But, you know, I feel like some of these kids, Rob, they get to a point and they're adults, right?

00:11:27.000 I mean, these kids eventually become adults unless they get sacrificed, I guess, you know, human sacrifice.

00:11:31.000 These kids are going to become adults.

00:11:33.000 What happens to these kids when they become adults?

00:11:35.000 I wouldn't be surprised if some of these kids, when they become adults, end up being used as pawns of the system.

00:11:45.000 And they say, look, you know, you went through this system.

00:11:49.000 And then they use that person to say to the other kids, hey, you know, you're in the system now, but guess what?

00:11:53.000 You come out on the other side empowered, and it becomes like a human trafficking enslavement network too.

00:11:58.000 And again, this is just kind of my theory, just, you know, as you're wargaming all of this out, this has nothing to do with the statistics that you're bringing forward.

00:12:33.000 There was a guy who owned a pizza place in St. Louis that I was following.

00:12:39.000 He was harboring people there and doing it illegally.

00:12:42.000 And the more people are aware of this, I think the more attention will be brought to it.

00:12:50.000 But I guess the issue now is trying to filter out What to pay attention to, what hot leads to follow, and then what to say like, okay, this is a dead end.

00:13:04.000 I mean, how am I? I don't know what the FBI is investigating.

00:13:21.000 The National Crime Information Center showed there were 170,899 missing black children under 18 in the United States, more than any other category except for white-Hispanic combined, which is a number of 264,443.

00:13:37.000 Over 400,000.

00:13:39.000 Where's Al Sharpton?

00:13:42.000 And both numbers increased from the year before.

00:13:47.000 Sure, I imagine probably the majority of these kids are runaways, running away from an abusive home or something.

00:13:55.000 But there's a high percentage of these, they say one-sixth, that are kids going into sex trafficking.

00:14:03.000 A lot of young kids getting brought up in that and then they think it's normal.

00:14:13.000 Chicago father and two sons sentenced for sex trafficking.

00:14:16.000 Sometimes it's a family affair, I guess.

00:14:19.000 Chicago Tribune reports that Nathan Nicholson was sentenced to 16 and a half years in prison and his sons Tyrell and Myrell Lockett were sentenced to 17 and a half years in prison each.

00:14:29.000 The men pleaded guilty last year to one count each of sex trafficking of a minor.

00:14:33.000 Prosecutors say the brothers solicited victims at malls in Chicago and northwest Indiana as well as over social media.

00:14:39.000 Court records say the men brought them to an abandoned house in the south suburbs, took provocative photos, and then coerced them to having their skills tested.

00:14:47.000 And the men kept all the money the women received from clients. 0.99

00:14:53.000 That is disturbing.

00:14:54.000 But that's how they're getting kids.

00:14:57.000 You've talked about how right now you think they're rounding up the Renfields to get going with the whole arresting whoever else they can find.

00:15:06.000 And part of what I think might back that up is, you know, we're seeing all these reports, hundreds being arrested with sex trafficking, et cetera, et cetera.

00:15:15.000 Most of those people from my research are actually either prostitutes or pimps or johns.

00:16:52.000 An Orangeburg man is among three convicted of sex trafficking charges, according to U.S. Attorney Beth Drake.

00:16:57.000 Damon Jackson, 24, of Columbia, Bakari McWilliam, 24, of Columbia, and Corey Miller, 44, of Orangeburg, were convicted in a federal court in Charleston for sex trafficking of minors.

00:17:09.000 Evidence shows that many of the victims were drug addicts and the defendants used heroin and crack cocaine to coerce victims to engage in commercial sex acts.

00:17:19.000 And then here's another one.

00:17:20.000 This is out of Colorado.

00:17:21.000 An area that I go skiing in, actually.

00:17:24.000 Leader of sex trafficking ring convicted on 30 counts.

00:17:28.000 Brock Franklin was convicted of 30 criminal counts on Friday, including human trafficking of a minor, pimping a child, patronizing a prostituted child, and kidnapping.

00:17:38.000 The case, including six co-defendants, was prosecuted under Colorado's Organized Crime Control Act.

00:17:45.000 Prosecutors worked with three girls and five women who were victims in the case.

00:17:49.000 And that's in Arapahoe County.

00:17:51.000 Now let's remember that they tried to pass that legislation in California that made it you could not prosecute a minor for a sex crime.

00:18:03.000 Basically, Saying, if you're under 18, you can go out on the streets and whore yourself out, and it's perfectly legal. 0.58

00:18:10.000 Or it gives an out to somebody like the story you just mentioned, who are pimping out minors, gives them a legal out when they get to the court case.

00:35:09.000 We help with the awareness and prevention of human trafficking and abuse of all kinds because we believe that love is what is so important and it's missing and that people need a greater understanding of the dynamics of abuse and human trafficking in order to be able to get their lives right, both the victims and the perpetrators.

00:35:29.000 So, how many people do you think are trafficked during the Super Bowl?

00:35:34.000 And how exactly do these traffickers or pimps go about doing this?

00:35:39.000 There are so many people.

00:35:40.000 A recent study indicated that in human trafficking in Texas, there are 300,000 people that they know have been trafficked in general.

00:35:50.000 79,000 kids and youth, and then the rest adults.

00:35:56.000 And so when it comes to the Super Bowl, It's the same process, but it gets highlighted more because there's so many people coming here to have a big super party.

00:36:08.000 That's what I think of it as.

00:36:10.000 And people, whenever they think of, hey, I'm going to go have a party, I'm going to go live it up and I'm going to escape from my daily realities and have a great time celebrating this victory, a lot of times they'll involve commercial sex and they don't even realize what they're doing.

00:36:25.000 They're victims who, whenever you see someone who is a prostitute or they are a sex industry worker that has been featured on Backpage or online or porn or in a nightclub or strip club, anywhere you see them or your hotel, they have been forced, coerced, or manipulated to be there.

00:36:46.000 And that's what most people don't realize. 0.50

00:36:48.000 Prostitution is human trafficking. 0.73

00:36:50.000 And any kind of paid sex is human trafficking.

00:36:54.000 And so of these 300,000 victims that are involved in human trafficking, the sex trafficking industry is enormous.

00:37:02.000 And you see it all around you, but the people themselves don't have a voice.

00:37:07.000 And so our organizations all come together in prevention and awareness and intervention so that we can give a voice to them.

00:37:17.000 So do you work with any victims of sex trafficking in your group and would this be a good place to refer people to that anyone knows of that were victims?

00:37:29.000 Yes, absolutely.

00:37:30.000 We do work with victims and we point them in the right direction so that we can connect them with all the agencies in Houston who can help them.

00:37:39.000 Above all, there's a great hotline.

00:37:42.000 It's the Houston hotline for the victims of human trafficking and they have a number that we'll talk about in a little while.

00:37:49.000 But we always point them to that number because it's a 24-7 number run by Rescue Houston and so many of our agencies are working together in collaboration which is Co-laboring to make this happen because there was so much effort on part of the pimps and you had asked, you know, how do they do it?

00:38:07.000 How do they recruit these girls and get them involved? 1.00

00:38:10.000 Well, just recently I saw a situation on Backpage where there was this beautiful girl and she looked about 17 with, I mean, kind of like you.

00:38:19.000 I mean, she had beautiful eyes and long beautiful hair and a bright I'd look to her, and yet she was on Backpage being advertised as a 27-year-old who wanted to go hook up with men. 1.00

00:38:32.000 And a lot of times, if you look at those ads, it's not the girls who have written them.

00:38:36.000 It's the pimps.

00:38:37.000 It's the traffickers.

00:38:38.000 And the girls don't even know. 1.00

00:38:40.000 So in the case of the 17-year-old, what we figured out We saw these awards in the background of her photos and realized she's a high school student in her bedroom thinking she's just taking some pictures on Snapchat for her nice boyfriend.

00:38:55.000 But whenever you are being lured into this, it's happening to all kinds of people.

00:39:00.000 It's not only the vulnerable, destitute, poor girl that just got kicked out of her family.

00:39:06.000 It's people like you, people like me, I've had human traffickers approach me in high school and college and graduate school.

00:39:12.000 That's why I'm passionate about it.

00:39:14.000 And thankfully, I listen to that voice inside that says, hey, this guy has a creep factor and I just don't feel right about it.

00:39:21.000 I'm not going to go.

00:39:22.000 But if you are a girl who is being Manipulated or coerced, what's going to happen is first they're going to be an older guy usually, and they're going to come to you and say, hey, I just think you're so beautiful and wonderful, and I love you so much, and here's some great gifts, and romance you, but then they'll start to get you doing things that your parents wouldn't approve of, and then they say, well, you know what?

00:39:43.000 I just love you so much.

00:39:44.000 If you love me, won't you sleep with these guys?

00:39:46.000 Because baby, I need the money.

00:39:48.000 And a lot of people think that people are sleeping with others.

00:39:52.000 They're having sex that is paid for two reasons.

00:39:55.000 One, because the girls want it. 1.00

00:39:56.000 And two, because they get paid so well.

00:39:58.000 But those are both myths.

00:40:00.000 Because the girls do not want to do that. 1.00

00:40:03.000 They have been forced and coerced.

00:40:06.000 So what the traffickers do is they tell the girl, hey, you know what?

00:40:10.000 If you sleep with him and these guys and get me this money, then I'm going to do all kinds of great things for you.

00:40:16.000 And then it never comes through.

00:40:18.000 And then they start to threaten them and say, I'm going to kill your family if you run away. 0.99

00:40:22.000 I'm going to break your legs. 1.00

00:40:24.000 I'm going to coerce you into doing certain things. 0.94

00:40:28.000 And so the girls become afraid.

00:40:30.000 To me, what human trafficking really is, especially in the sex trade, is we have all of these political issues that we see that are real-life crises like the refugee crisis or terrorism, and you hear the voice of the victims going, Hey, this is happening.

00:40:49.000 It's got to stop.

00:40:50.000 We're so scared.

00:40:51.000 But this is a voiceless situation.

00:40:54.000 And to me, it's a silent terrorism.

00:40:57.000 Human trafficking is a silent terrorism that is happening.

00:41:00.000 And so we as organizations have to give voice to these victims and let them know what's happening.

00:41:07.000 Exactly, and you made a great point that we do need to give voice to these victims.

00:41:12.000 And many people don't realize that slavery still exists today.

00:41:17.000 We think that slavery was abolished, and it sure was, but it's still going on today when we have children and women and even young men that are being trafficked and sold for sex in this country.

00:41:30.000 Another question is, if anybody sees something suspicious, what should they do?

00:41:36.000 Well, the first thing to do is to learn how to look for something suspicious.

00:41:41.000 And because you're not going to hear about it, you have to learn how to see it, how to recognize it.

00:41:45.000 And if you see a young girl with an older guy and it just doesn't look right, or if you're at a hotel or one of these other places and she just looks like she doesn't want to be there, or you see he's controlling the money and he's got the money, he's got her cell phone, and you just have a bad feeling, you should call the hotline that we have in Houston.

00:42:04.000 Call that number.

00:42:05.000 Absolutely.

00:42:06.000 That is the best thing to do and report it.

00:42:09.000 Sometimes people take pictures of a driver's license.

00:42:12.000 If they see a girl being dropped off by an escort or a pimp, that always helps.

00:42:18.000 You want to report the license number to this number.

00:42:21.000 Even though the number is not our number, it's Rescue Houston's number, but we all use it collaboratively because it gets the girl's To the right people so they can get all the restorative help that they need.

00:42:32.000 But as far as consumers, I think that's another area that's really important because if you think of it, if you know that you're a John, you're somebody who's buying sex, then People aren't meant to be consumed.

00:42:45.000 They're meant to have companionship and love and so are you.

00:42:49.000 And so if you're a guy who's tempted to do this, just know it's just not healthy and it's not what you think and the girls don't get to keep that money.

00:42:57.000 We had one case where there was a girl who had made $30,000 for her pimp and she only got to keep $71 of it because for some shoes that he bought her and that's happening over and over.

00:43:09.000 The girls aren't getting paid well, believe me. 1.00

00:43:11.000 They don't want to be there.

00:43:13.000 Wow, so it really is truly the definition of slavery then, because they're working and they don't even get to reap the benefits of their work.

00:43:23.000 Given it's sex work as well, it's also in a sense rape when you're being forced to do something against your will.

00:43:32.000 What can we do to, you know, kind of, I wouldn't say boycott the Super Bowl, but what can we do to minimize The effect that the human sex traffickers can have in this industry during the Super Bowl.

00:43:47.000 The most important thing is to minimize demand.

00:43:52.000 Because if there wasn't demand, then there wouldn't be any need for all these girls to do this. 0.99

00:43:57.000 And so if you're a guy who's watching this and saying, you know, I'm really feeling like paying for sex right now.

00:44:26.000 Just this week I participated in our group participated in the Justice Rally which several organizations got together and we went out into the city and helped with interventions you know to Make human trafficking facts aware to hotel owners and strip club owners in different places where they don't realize necessarily people are being held against their will, but we can do something to stop it.

00:44:50.000 And so, to me, it's the ultimate info war because you have to absolutely get the information out there because the girls are not going to do it. 1.00

00:44:58.000 And there are transvestites and other people who are also trafficked.
