03:20:37.000 On this Friday, February 8, 2019, in the last hour of the day, you know, just looking at all of the crazy, really crazy news lately in terms of what's been happening, and I want to kind of paint a different picture about governance and politics, because a couple things have jumped out to me recently that really illustrate sort of the all-time low in which much of governance has fallen.

03:21:13.000 I want to give a little bit of background on me again, but I want to talk about this kind of overlap of some of the issues from a personal perspective.

03:21:21.000 My grandparents and my great-grandparents on my mother's side were immigrants coming into the United States.

03:21:28.000 My grandfather and grandmother on my father's side immigrated from Southern Europe from Croatia, what was formerly Yugoslavia.

03:21:37.000 Originally in Croatia, you know, things kind of change around quite a bit in Europe over the decades and even centuries.

03:21:45.000 But they came here, my grandfather, 1906.

03:21:47.000 He was 16.

03:21:48.000 He went to work in the mines.

03:21:49.000 He built a life here.

03:21:50.000 And my son kind of brought this to my attention recently.

03:21:54.000 My oldest son is 43.

03:21:58.000 And what he said is, you know, Those early pictures of immigrants, you know, Italian children, Croatian children, Irish children, they were always waving flags, if you ever go back and look.

03:22:11.000 And the interesting thing is they were generally, almost always, in fact, always, I can't remember otherwise, they were always American flags.

03:22:19.000 And people were happy, privileged, excited.

03:22:23.000 Yeah, there's an image up now, you know, excited to come into the United States.

03:22:28.000 You know, it was like The golden opportunity of a global lifetime for anyone on the planet a hundred years ago.

03:22:39.000 People weren't breaking in the back door.

03:22:42.000 They were coming through Ellis Island.

03:22:43.000 They were coming in the front door and really proud and privileged to integrate into this culture.

03:22:51.000 I think of my grandparents.

03:22:52.000 My grandparents did not speak very good English, but they absolutely forbid their four children from speaking anything but English.

03:23:02.000 Even though the whole neighborhood, because everyone kind of clustered together from the various countries of people, came from much in the same way they do in immigrant communities today.

03:23:12.000 But in those days, the children weren't allowed to speak, at least in my dad's household, Serbo-Croatian or Croatian because they were going to be Americans. 0.97

03:23:22.000 Now, my dad grew up and he understood every word of Croatian, but even as an adult, he couldn't speak it because he knew he'd get in trouble for it, you know?

03:23:29.000 I mean, think about that.

03:23:32.000 But that's kind of the backdrop of it.

03:23:34.000 You know, and I think about even the Pledge of Allegiance, you know, Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

03:23:40.000 And the United States of America, which is kind of, you know, sort of the foundation of all this.

03:23:46.000 And then the next line, the last line, you know, for the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible.

03:23:53.000 You know, that's kind of interesting when you think of identity politics today and how counter that even runs to that basic pledge of allegiance, you know, indivisible, a nation together, you know.

03:24:06.000 With liberty and justice.

03:24:08.000 Really?

03:24:09.000 Justice for all.

03:24:11.000 Is that really true today?

03:24:13.000 Justice for all?

03:24:14.000 I mean, think about it.

03:24:16.000 In the court system, if it's a criminal matter or a civil matter, like what Alex is facing right now, it's a million-dollar equation to have justice for the very foundation of what we are as Americans.

03:24:29.000 The right to free speech.

03:24:32.000 The First Amendment right to free speech.

03:24:35.000 You know, when I think about all this and the backdrop of the nonsense about immigration and leadership, and I think about my own family's history, you know, my dad was born during the Depression years.

03:24:50.000 And, you know, so here you are, you arrive as an immigrant, you're working underground mines, you're making in those days a dollar a day, which was great. 0.99

03:24:58.000 I mean, he had a chance, you know, he built this house with his hands on Property owned by the mining company, which later became USS Steel.

03:25:07.000 In fact, up until he died, he was on that property.

03:25:10.000 When he died, they tore down his house, the last house standing, because it was mining property, after all.

03:25:16.000 He never even owned it.

03:25:18.000 And he lived into his 90s.

03:25:20.000 You know, he lived 80 years in the United States.

03:25:23.000 But when I think about all that, you know, my dad grew up proud to be an American.

03:25:27.000 He loved history.

03:25:28.000 He was a very brilliant guy.

03:25:31.000 In European history, Russian history, American history, those were his specialties.

03:25:34.000 And he loved the idea of governance, the idea of him being born here, first generation, the idea that he could actually make a difference in the world, do something in the world.

03:25:45.000 And he left Minnesota where he lived in his early 20s, moved to Alaska, which was truly a frontier place in the mid-50s.

03:25:53.000 This was a rough place to land.

03:25:58.000 And he landed here the next year, brought my mother up a few years before statehood.

03:26:03.000 And then my dad, six children, my dad and mom, six children were born here in Alaska.

03:26:09.000 I went, it was still a territory, my sister also.

03:26:12.000 You know, and we watched this place change and grow, and the governance of Alaska was so different then, you know?

03:26:18.000 I mean, there were Republicans and Democrats, and people fought like crazy over foundational issues like a state constitution, like how the government was going to be constructed, you know?

03:26:29.000 We were the last group to do this.

03:26:31.000 My generation literally grew up in that environment, the environment of a frontier state within a frontier nation.

03:26:41.000 We were the last to hang on to the foundation of our value system, which has been a big part of my private conversations these days, because that's what should drive government.

03:26:55.000 That's what should drive the legacy that we're going to leave behind for our grandchildren and children.

03:27:03.000 Good governance is what it was about in my father's day, and I'm going to dedicate this entire Friday afternoon to this because It is what it's about.

03:27:15.000 You know, when I think back again on my dad, you know, he started as a school teacher.

03:27:19.000 My dad couldn't afford to go to college, all right, for four years.

03:27:22.000 So he had to get a four-year degree in two years because that's what he could afford, and that's what he did.

03:27:28.000 He doubled the load, finished top of his class, a four-year degree at 20, and started teaching.

03:27:37.000 And he came to Alaska, He was at first, he worked as a inspector on federal projects.

03:27:43.000 There's an image of my dad.

03:27:44.000 He died actually at 40.

03:27:46.000 I've outlived him now by 20 years.

03:27:49.000 But when I look at dad, you know, his history here, he came up pretty simple guy, you know.

03:27:55.000 And then he became, after being a federal inspector, as long as he could stomach it until he could get a teaching job, he went into teaching.

03:28:01.000 He then was a boys counselor when they segregated boys and girls counselors.

03:28:06.000 He was then a principal.

03:28:08.000 And then a superintendent of schools at 26 years old.

03:28:12.000 And then from there, the State Senate, and then on to the United States Congress.

03:28:17.000 And in all of that, he dealt with a lot of fights, a lot of things.

03:28:21.000 They tried to stomp him down in so many ways because Dad believed in government.

03:28:26.000 He believed in government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

03:28:31.000 He grew up dirt poor like a lot of people have in this country and understood What it was to struggle, what it was to build, and what it was to be proud of the country that you're in.

03:34:20.000 That's just the way He approached things, and he was the ability, multi-interested background, much in the same way as my brothers and sisters and I have developed over the years.

03:34:31.000 But when you think about the mindset was this was the nation of total opportunity,

03:34:38.000 the one oasis on the planet for freedom and liberty and justice.

03:34:43.000 And people believed it. And it actually, for the most part, got delivered.

03:34:47.000 And we got better at it over the last couple of centuries as a nation.

03:34:51.000 And we continue to get better at it.

03:34:52.000 But what has happened is the hijacking of the nation on so many levels.

03:34:57.000 I think back on my dad, you know, as a teenager, young, young kid listening to the arguments

03:35:04.000 that adults would have over the radio broadcasts of the latest news.

03:35:08.000 And he would listen carefully and he kept detailed maps during World War Two where we were

03:35:14.000 and where the access and the allies had moved in combat and so on, both in the Pacific and in

03:35:20.000 Europe. And he followed all of that.

03:35:23.000 And it was part of the dialogue among people.

03:35:25.000 A real conversation was happening among the people.

03:35:31.000 For the people, by the people, of the people.

03:35:34.000 That's the way my father grew up, understanding governance.

03:35:38.000 And that's the way I grew up.

03:35:39.000 And my children grow up, and my grandchildren now are growing.

03:35:43.000 And as I look at that multi-generational overlay of what the American value system was based on, this is what we're losing presently.

03:35:55.000 I have a couple of video clips that I pulled recently and asked the guys in the team to pull together of Nancy Pelosi, the leader of the Democratic Party.

03:36:04.000 Now, let me roll back a little bit further.

03:36:06.000 Now, when my dad was in the Congress in the early 70s before he disappeared, and without getting into that history today, but when he disappeared off the face of the earth, Don Young came in in a special election, Don Young, who is the longest living, longest in history serving United United States Congressman from Alaska and he's in the

03:36:25.000 Republican Party. My dad was a Democrat. If my dad were still in the US House he

03:36:30.000 would be the Speaker most likely probably would have already been the Speaker

03:36:35.000 and things would have been a way different ballgame but the Speaker of the House

03:36:39.000 today representing the majority party in the United States House and I don't

03:36:45.000 pick on people.

03:36:45.000 That is not who I am.

03:36:46.000 But I've got to say, the words coming out, the ideas that are being expressed by Nancy Pelosi in the next video clip, which deals with the concept of government, you know, in terms of how do you manipulate the news?

03:36:59.000 How do you create the news, if you will?

03:37:02.000 And it's a thing she ran that ran actually on C-SPAN and No, let's just run the clip.

03:37:09.000 I mean, let's hear it.

03:37:10.000 Let's go, guys, if you have that ready and we can run it.

03:37:16.000 You demonize and then you... We call it the wrap-up smear.

03:37:20.000 If you want to talk politics, it's called the wrap-up smear.

03:37:29.000 And then you write it, and they'll say, see it's reported in the press that this, this, this, and this.

03:47:48.000 I'm a second generation American, like many out there on my father's side, third generation on my mother's side.

03:47:56.000 And, you know, when I think about just the change in the way people's attitudes are towards not just immigration in general, but the attitude of immigrants when they arrive is so different.

03:48:08.000 And it varies with individuals.

03:48:10.000 I have to say that.

03:48:11.000 In all fairness, I mean, I think when you come in the front door and you get to arrive here and be a part of what the United States is and what it's becoming, It is a privilege, an honor to be welcomed into a country through the front door.

03:48:30.000 And, you know, and maybe we need to look at those statutes a little closer and see what's happening there.

03:48:36.000 And I think that's not always a bad idea.

03:48:38.000 They need to be reviewed from time to time.

03:48:40.000 But in the meanwhile, we need to have secure borders.

03:48:43.000 What I was talking about in sort of the whole governance backdrop, again, you know, think about this in terms of the changes.

03:48:50.000 The political party of my dad, the Democratic Party, is now a party about non-citizens, which is kind of awkward, you know.

03:48:58.000 My dad, as a first-generation American, would have weighed in heavily on this because he valued the thoughts of immigration and what the country was founded on and how we built it.

03:49:07.000 You know, Irish were treated badly when they arrived.

03:49:10.000 The Italians were treated Badly when they arrived.

03:49:13.000 You know, every group, when they arrived in mass from the various parts of Europe and the world, they were treated badly.

03:49:21.000 That is not an excuse for what can happen today, but the biggest incoming group are Latin American descent, and the majority population in the United States is Latin American descent these days, so I don't think the same unwelcome situation is here at all.

03:49:39.000 In fact, I think it's the opposite.

03:49:41.000 I think America has evolved beyond that.

03:49:43.000 It's not about race or nationality or any of it.

03:49:45.000 It's just about honoring the law and the things that built a nation, which is a commonality, a melting pot of things that evolved from people out into our government, expressed in a set of values.

03:49:58.000 That really has been hijacked, and that's what I'm talking about here today.

03:50:02.000 The idea that the people's business should be in a closet.

03:50:05.000 And these are the parties that talk about transparency in government.

03:50:11.000 A nice name, but not in reality.

03:50:13.000 The only transparency is about you and me.

03:50:15.000 The only cameras pointed at anyone are at us.

03:50:19.000 The average person being hijacked, betrayed by a technocracy that has saddled up with

03:50:25.000 big business.

03:50:26.000 You know, that's called fascism.

03:50:28.000 That also happened in Germany.

03:50:30.000 Read a book.

03:50:31.000 It's old.

03:50:32.000 It's a little dated.

03:50:33.000 It's called "Ominous Parallels," and it's an analogy of the United States and Nazi Germany

03:50:41.000 and the rise of fascism.

03:50:43.000 And it's when government uses the tools of propaganda and lying, as Nancy Pelosi said, we played in the last segment, as a policy, as a tactic.

03:50:53.000 And then you overlay the interest of pharmaceutical industry and corporations and the wealthy and the elite, whether you're a Democrat proposing to be a representative of poor, innocent masses or Republican.

03:51:06.000 You know, these guys have stolen From us, this republic.

03:51:12.000 And that's what needs to be returned.

03:51:13.000 Not in an act of violence and craziness like we're seeing from the left, the insanity of it all.

03:51:19.000 Because by identity politics, you abrogate the melting pot, the co-culture that we've created here, as unique in the world.

03:51:28.000 And you burn it on the ground, the flag.

03:51:32.000 Now, this is not How Americans and future Americans used to arrive in the nation.

03:51:39.000 And I think that is fundamentally the flaw here.

03:51:43.000 It's a value system that we need to respect.

03:51:48.000 And justice for all.

03:51:49.000 I want to talk about that foundation.

03:51:51.000 Because we hear a lot about socialism too these days.

03:51:54.000 Socialize medicine, socialize this, socialize that.

03:51:58.000 You know, think about justice.

03:52:00.000 If you're going to socialize anything in this country, how about justice?

03:52:04.000 Access to the court system on an equal footing, where you don't have to sacrifice everything you own for an increment of justice.

03:52:15.000 Right?

03:52:16.000 I mean, what's Alex facing right now?

03:52:18.000 Millions in litigation.

03:52:20.000 To just have the right of free speech and his right to be heard, our right to be heard in the world and invigorate the public debate in the world, which is what a free press is about.

03:52:32.000 It's not silencing speech.

03:52:34.000 It's making sure speech happens.

03:52:36.000 It's making sure the electronic town square of the 21st century is open for everyone, not just those with the approved ideas.

03:52:47.000 This is not what this republic is about.

03:52:50.000 And I can tell you my dad would be opposed to so much of the ideas that are expressed in this network.

03:52:56.000 But I know one thing about my dad.

03:52:58.000 He would fight to the death for my right and Alex's right and everybody else's right to the opportunity to speak freely about these ideas.

03:53:10.000 Because that's the kind of man he was because it was about values first and ideas were the realm of public discussion debate where either he was going to become enlightened and change his view and he did on a lot of issues over his career because he gained information and understood it and then he could make a different decision because it filled in the blanks.

03:53:32.000 He was a great debater because he listened for the holes.

03:53:37.000 Where was information missing?

03:53:39.000 Or where was the information I needed to contribute lacking?

03:53:43.000 So a dialogue could happen.

03:53:44.000 I want to talk about how the Congress was configured in the early 70s.

03:53:48.000 In those days, families all went to D.C.

03:53:51.000 and we lived in either Maryland or Northern Virginia or on the Hill.

03:53:55.000 And families got together for events like all the time.

03:53:59.000 And they were Republican families and Democratic families all together.

03:54:03.000 And it's awful hard to look children in the eye and to look families in the eye and then beat each other up all day.

03:54:10.000 So you didn't do that.

03:54:12.000 You treated people with dignity and respect.

03:54:14.000 The respect that if you believe human beings are created in the image and likeness of God, that we're somehow divinely connected to the Creator, you would do anyway, right?

03:54:25.000 I mean, isn't that the way we should treat each other?

03:54:28.000 As with respect and dignity, even when we strongly disagree.

03:54:33.000 Can't we embrace each other in a way that Christ did, where he even embraced prostitutes and the poor and the dirty and the filthy and the diseased? 0.95

03:54:44.000 You know, can't we look at our adversaries with the same compassion and yet recognition of our differences and be respectful of one another?

03:54:52.000 I believe we can.

03:54:53.000 In my family, we do.

03:54:55.000 There's Republicans and there's Democrats and there's Libertarians.

03:54:58.000 And there's everything in between and everything outside of that.

03:55:01.000 And we debate like crazy on the facts and the merit of the debate.

03:55:06.000 And we change and we modify and we grow in that debate.

03:55:10.000 And it's vigorous.

03:55:11.000 It's emotional.

03:55:12.000 But when we leave, we embrace each other as brothers and sisters.

03:55:18.000 And it's a model.

03:55:20.000 It's a model for how the nation should behave.

03:55:23.000 Debate.

03:55:25.000 Vigorously debate.

03:55:26.000 Don't shut anybody's channel off.

03:55:28.000 You can always change it if you don't like what you're hearing.

03:55:31.000 But let's have the debate.

03:55:32.000 And let's have it on a platform of facts and ideas.

03:55:35.000 And not be beating each other up, personalizing it.

03:55:38.000 That doesn't take us anywhere.

03:55:39.000 And that does not enlighten the listening public.

03:55:42.000 You that need this information right now.

03:55:45.000 So we can take our government back and gain the command and control of government again.

03:55:49.000 Because the voting booth is still working for the moment.

03:55:53.000 For the moment, a technocracy does not need electronic voting, should be opposed, not allowed at all, ever, under any condition, you should be able to pull that paper ballot with the ink mark on it and count them individually or ever.

03:56:12.000 Because that's what's missing is the integrity of the process, starting with the voting booth.
