02:32:17.000 Can you explain to people why the coronavirus is not really the cause of all this economic implosion that we're seeing?

02:32:23.000 It's just the initiator of it.

02:32:26.000 But this was going to happen one way or another.

02:32:28.000 Can you give us an overview of that, please?

02:32:31.000 Well, first of all, I don't want to dismiss the coronavirus as being a problem.

02:32:31.000 Sure.

02:32:34.000 It's clearly a problem, and even a healthy economy would have to deal with it.

02:32:39.000 Now, you can debate whether or not the response is appropriate, whether or not we're going over the top as far as the self-isolation and the lockdowns and all that stuff.

02:32:52.000 I'm not even talking about that.

02:32:54.000 What I want to talk about is what the government is doing as far as the bailouts and the stimulus.

02:33:00.000 The trillions and trillions of dollars that is being thrown at the problem and that is being created out of thin air by the Federal Reserve, which is buying up everything and flooding the economy with newly created money.

02:33:13.000 This is going to do far more damage.

02:33:15.000 than the coronavirus to the economy.

02:33:18.000 I mean, the government's cure is far worse than this disease.

02:33:23.000 But what people are missing is that the coronavirus at best is a pin that pricked a bubble that was looking for a pin

02:33:33.000 anyway.

02:33:33.000 It would have found one if it wasn't the coronavirus.

02:33:36.000 It would have been something else.

02:33:37.000 In fact, I think the air already started to seep out of that bubble.

02:33:41.000 That was why the Fed had started cutting rates last year.

02:33:45.000 That's why the Fed had quietly gone back to quantitative easing without admitting that it was doing it, was because the air was leaking out.

02:33:53.000 But this is another financial crisis.

02:33:55.000 Don't, you know, when you hear people talk about it's not a financial crisis, of course it's a financial crisis.

02:34:01.000 2008 was a financial crisis, but it didn't start as a financial crisis, it was a real estate crisis.

02:34:07.000 It was a decline in real estate prices, but the problem was the people who bought real estate borrowed money, and when the real estate went down, they didn't repay their loans, and that's what made it a financial crisis.

02:34:18.000 Well, the coronavirus may be a health crisis, But when businesses are shut down and they have no revenues, and they have a lot of debt, they can't pay their bills.

02:34:27.000 So that's why it's another financial crisis.

02:34:30.000 And the problem is, we were a highly leveraged economy.

02:34:34.000 Everybody had borrowed money.

02:34:35.000 Corporations had borrowed money.

02:34:37.000 State and local governments had borrowed money.

02:34:39.000 The federal government, individuals with record student loans, credit card debt, auto debt.

02:34:45.000 Nobody had saved anything for a rainy day.

02:34:49.000 Well, take a look outside.

02:34:51.000 It's not only raining, it is pouring, and we got nothing.

02:34:55.000 And we think, well, we could just print money.

02:34:58.000 Well, yeah, that's my question.

02:35:00.000 How far is the Fed going to take this?

02:35:02.000 I mean, they've already printed trillions of dollars in money.

02:35:04.000 They're going to own a significant portion of our economy.

02:35:08.000 They're buying corporate bonds.

02:35:09.000 They're buying real estate loans.

02:35:10.000 I mean, they're going to be buying just stocks, I guess.

02:35:14.000 And where does this end, if ever?

02:35:16.000 Are they just going to try to reinflate this to the point of oblivion?

02:35:19.000 Where does it end?

02:35:21.000 Look, they have a false sense of complacency because they believe that this strategy worked when they did it after the 08 crisis.

02:35:29.000 Now, it only appears to have worked because they were able to inflate a bigger bubble than the one that popped.

02:35:35.000 But it won't happen this time.

02:35:37.000 There's no way they're going to reflate the bubble.

02:35:40.000 And the problem is, That what they're doing now is on an order of magnitude greater than what they did in 2008.

02:35:47.000 I mean, they're not just bailing out banks and, you know, the GSEs, you know, Fannie and Freddie.

02:35:52.000 They're bailing out many different industries simultaneously and state and local governments and the federal government and individuals.

02:36:00.000 In fact, now they are injecting the inflation directly into the economy by sending out all these checks to individuals, to small business owners. So this is, you

02:36:10.000 know, QE for the people, but it's going to backfire in an even bigger way because

02:36:14.000 instead of pushing up stock prices, it's going to push up consumer prices. And everybody should

02:36:20.000 be asking this question, and they're not. Who is going to pay for all of this?

02:36:26.000 We're talking about trillions and trillions of dollars to bail out everybody, and now they want to spend trillions more on infrastructure.

02:36:34.000 Where is the money coming from?

02:36:36.000 Who is going to pay for it?

02:36:37.000 Now, people think, oh, the Fed is just going to print it.

02:36:39.000 Well, if the Fed could just print money and it cost us nothing, then why did we wait for the coronavirus?

02:36:45.000 Why haven't we been doing this all along?

02:36:47.000 I mean, why didn't we just have everything we wanted just getting it from the Fed?

02:36:51.000 Because people are going to find out that the most expensive way to pay for government is to print the money.

02:36:57.000 Because we have to pay for government.

02:36:59.000 It's not free.

02:37:00.000 And either the government takes our money, or the government takes our purchasing power.

02:37:04.000 And that's what they're doing now.

02:37:06.000 By printing money and spending it into circulation, they're destroying the value of the money that's already out there.

02:37:12.000 So the money that people have saved in their retirement...

02:37:17.000 Yeah, I'm sorry, a little bit of a lag time between us, but doesn't this also bring up the question, why are we ever paying taxes to the federal government if they can just create all this money anyway and claim that there's no cost to it?

02:37:30.000 Well, that's my point!

02:37:32.000 Because you have to pay for government, and if we don't pay for it with taxation, we pay through it through inflation.

02:37:38.000 The government either takes our money or they take our purchasing power.

02:37:42.000 But the most expensive way to pay for government is the way they're doing it now, through inflation.

02:37:47.000 And so every American who has savings, who has money in a retirement account, or even earns wages, is going to be stuck with the bill for the bailouts and the stimulus.

02:40:52.000 In fact, your advice, people should really listen carefully to what you're saying, because I'm doing the exact same thing.

02:40:58.000 My company, my whole operation, we've moved every last dollar out of the banks that we can, except what we need for cash flow and transaction capabilities.

02:41:07.000 We're converting dollars into hard assets.

02:41:10.000 Temporarily using just short-term treasuries for the moment until we make other decisions for some of the things that you mentioned.

02:41:17.000 So people really take this seriously.

02:41:19.000 But Peter, I also want to tell you something that probably you don't hear enough and I don't hear enough.

02:41:23.000 Those of us who have been right For decades.

02:41:26.000 We don't hear it often enough, but Peter, you, sir, you are correct.

02:41:31.000 You were right that a big event was going to come, an event that nobody else foresaw.

02:41:36.000 You didn't know, perhaps, that it was going to be this virus, but you knew that there was something that could devastate the system, you know, a 20-sigma event that would come along, and it's here.

02:41:46.000 So you were absolutely correct.

02:41:48.000 People should listen to you, and thank you for your service of what you're doing to help people get squared away.

02:41:54.000 Right, but you know, what I've been predicting hasn't even really happened yet in its entirety.

02:41:58.000 A lot of the things I've been forecasting have taken place.

02:42:01.000 The key is not the coronavirus.

02:42:03.000 We were unprepared for anything.

02:42:05.000 You know, something is bound to go wrong, right?

02:42:07.000 Murphy's Law, anything that can go wrong will.

02:42:10.000 But the reason that this country is so ill-prepared for what's happening is because of all the debt.

02:42:16.000 We had a debt bubble.

02:42:17.000 And why did we have a debt bubble?

02:42:19.000 Because the Federal Reserve refused to allow the economy to restructure every time it contracted.

02:42:25.000 And so they levered us all up.

02:42:27.000 They kept interest rates artificially low and they kept businesses that should have failed in business and they took on more debt because they weren't really viable enterprises.

02:42:36.000 But instead of letting the free market restructure the economy so that we can have a recovery built on a solid foundation, We built a bubble on the foundation of debt.

02:42:48.000 And that foundation has crashed.

02:42:50.000 This house of cards that the Fed built instead of a viable economy is collapsing around it.

02:42:55.000 And all it can do is try to blow more air into a deflating bubble.

02:43:00.000 It's not going to work.

02:43:01.000 This time they're not going to be able to bail us out with a bigger bubble than the one that just popped.

02:43:07.000 So, this is the end game.

02:43:10.000 All the years of kicking the can down the road, right?

02:43:13.000 We finally caught up to the can, and there's no more road.

02:43:16.000 And this can is too big.

02:43:18.000 If we kick it, we break our foot.

02:43:20.000 So, this is the end game.

02:43:21.000 And unfortunately, I used to think that hyperinflation was kind of a worst-case scenario that I hoped we would avoid.

02:43:28.000 Now, I think it's the most likely.

02:43:30.000 I mean, it's not a done deal.

02:43:32.000 I mean, it's still possible to avoid it, but I think the odds of that are very, very slim at this point, given where we are.

02:43:39.000 I mean, everybody has pretty much drunk the Kool-Aid of socialism.

02:43:42.000 You know, it's ironic.

02:43:43.000 Bernie Sanders has dropped out of the race, probably because he figured there's no point in becoming president, because whoever wins, socialism is what we got.

02:43:52.000 Right, right.

02:43:53.000 It's already here.

02:43:54.000 The Fed has given us socialism.

02:43:55.000 The response to the coronavirus has given us financial socialism.

02:43:58.000 But you're right.

02:43:59.000 I mean, we see this paycheck protection bailout program that's paying people to sit at home and collect essentially $15 an hour for sitting at home and for companies to keep those people on the payroll, when companies should be rationally adapting or reducing their size in order to protect the other jobs in the same company.

02:44:17.000 How do you survive if you can't adapt as a company and reduce your payroll You know, to adapt to the times that are happening.

02:44:23.000 I mean, aren't these bailouts in essence going to cripple the recovery?

02:44:27.000 Oh, absolutely.

02:44:28.000 Well, there's going to be no recovery.

02:44:29.000 Look, Ben Bernanke actually got something right, but not really.

02:44:34.000 But when he was asked if this was going to be a depression, he said no, because he said the Great Depression was caused by a financial crisis and then policy errors by the government.

02:44:43.000 Well, we've actually had a bigger financial crisis, and we're making even worse policy errors this time than we did then.

02:44:50.000 Look, everything the government is doing is gonna delay the recovery,

02:44:54.000 and it's going to deepen the depression that we're entered into.

02:44:58.000 Because we need the free market to function, right?

02:45:01.000 And when the free market functions, over-leveraged businesses fail, right?

02:45:06.000 Businesses that no longer have adequate demand go out of business, and they free up their resources,

02:45:12.000 they free up labor, which is a resource, to do something else.

02:45:16.000 But what the government wants to do is maintain the status quo.

02:45:20.000 They want to artificially keep businesses afloat that would sink in a free market.

02:45:25.000 And so they have to redirect resources from where the market wants them to be to where the government wants to trap them.

02:45:31.000 And therefore all these businesses that are being bailed out today are gonna need constant bailouts in the future.

02:45:38.000 The people who are being subsidized not to work are going to have to be subsidized indefinitely because the businesses that need to employ them are not going to be created because we're redirecting capital to maintaining the businesses that should be failing.

02:45:53.000 I mean, it's like what if when they invented the automobile, the government decided that we had to keep all the buggy-whipped manufacturers in business, right? 0.92

02:46:02.000 Oh, we can't let These companies fail because their workers would lose their jobs.

02:46:06.000 Well, we'd be subsidizing them to this day, because who needs the buggy whips, right? 0.99

02:46:10.000 But we're going to keep these businesses going?

02:46:12.000 I mean, think about all of the restaurants that should be failing.

02:46:16.000 And it's not just because of coronavirus.

02:46:20.000 People are not going to have jobs.

02:46:22.000 They're not going to be able to go out to restaurants.

02:46:24.000 A lot of restaurants fail anyway.

02:46:26.000 Now we're going to keep them all in business?

02:46:28.000 I mean, a lot of people, even when we have a cure for the coronavirus, maybe, they're not going to be going out to eat as often.

02:46:33.000 I mean, we have too many restaurants.

02:46:35.000 We have too many stores.

02:46:36.000 There's a lot of small retailers that were just barely hanging on.

02:46:40.000 You know, they had all this debt.

02:46:41.000 They were staying in business.

02:46:43.000 The government kept crippling them with increasing the minimum wage.

02:46:46.000 These businesses were going to fail.

02:46:47.000 Well anyway, what, now we're going to keep them in business?

02:46:49.000 Now we're going to subsidize them by creating money?

02:46:52.000 And you have a lot of big businesses that are over leveraged.

02:46:57.000 What we don't have enough in this country is manufacturing.

02:47:00.000 We don't have enough production.

02:47:01.000 We need resources to be reallocated there.

02:47:04.000 We have too many service sector businesses that are being kept afloat by debt.

02:47:09.000 And now the government wants to divert more resources into maintaining the bloated section of our economy and preventing an actual recovery from taking place.

02:47:19.000 Yeah, we've reached that point of reckoning.

02:47:21.000 I like how you described it.

02:47:22.000 We've kicked the can so far down the road, now we've caught up to the can and we've run out of road.

02:47:26.000 You can't keep re-inflating it.

02:47:28.000 We only have a little over a minute left, Peter, but what do you think the world is going to look like in the next year?

02:47:34.000 I mean, in America, are people going to be paying $10 for a loaf of bread in a year?

02:47:39.000 Is that possible?

02:47:41.000 What do you think the economy is going to look like in just a year?

02:47:43.000 It's hard to know the exact timetable, but I do think that prices are going to go way up and I think not only are people going to be paying a lot more money for bread, but they're going to be waiting in long lines to get it.

02:47:54.000 Because I think one of the things the government is going to do is impose price controls.

02:47:57.000 I think they're going to say that Hey, people are price gouging.

02:48:00.000 We're going to limit the ability to raise prices, which is going to create shortages, which means we're going to have to find another way to ration out goods.

02:48:09.000 If we can't let the market do it through a price mechanism, then people are going to have to queue up and wait in long lines.

02:48:14.000 Look, things are going to change dramatically in this country.

02:48:17.000 I think we're headed for a collapse of the dollar.

02:48:19.000 I think the dollar is going to lose its status as the reserve currency.

02:48:23.000 I believe the world is going to go back to gold as the reserve, which is what the dollar replaced.

02:48:27.000 It didn't replace the pound, it replaced gold.

02:48:30.000 Gold historically has served as the monetary anchor for the global financial system.

02:48:35.000 I think we're going back to gold.

02:48:37.000 I think when that happens, the American standard of living is going to implode, because we've been living beyond our means, because the rest of the world has been enabling that by living beneath its means.

02:48:47.000 But I do think that you're going to see a real economic boom outside of the United States when they no longer have to support the American consumer and the American government.
