01:03:23.000 Our own paper in Hawaii, the Star Advertiser reported this week that 50% of families with children are food insecure in Hawaii right now.

01:03:32.000 Can you kind of set up what is happening in Hawaii and how did we get here?

01:03:37.000 Well, it all defines how you define secure.

01:03:41.000 We've actually been food insecure for a long time because, as you said, 90% of the food in Hawaii is imported, as well as energy and most of the other materials that we need to survive on.

01:03:54.000 They all come in from the United States.

01:03:57.000 And the way it got there is that the United States took over the Hawaiian Kingdom, which was in the 19th century a sovereign, independent state recognized by all the other countries of the world as an equal sovereign.

01:04:11.000 The Hawaiian Kingdom had over 130 diplomatic missions around the world, consulates and embassies and things like that.

01:04:21.000 And then suddenly in 1893, the United States Landed troops in Hawaii and they invaded or they sent an invasion force

01:04:30.000 The Queen, seeing this, decided not to oppose the United States because of the United States' superiority, of course, as far as in arms.

01:04:42.000 But what the United States was doing was that they were supporting an insurrection by a few disgruntled local white businessmen who were actually sugar barons.

01:04:53.000 The Ag industry?

01:04:54.000 Big Ag, right?

01:04:55.000 This is the 19th century version of Big Ag.

01:04:58.000 Yes, Big Ag, exactly what it was.

01:05:01.000 They had turned Hawaii into this huge agricultural production state, but not producing food, but producing sugarcane for export, and then later pineapple.

01:05:13.000 But these sugarcane barons Wanted a better Market for their sugar and the McKinley tariff had put some severe limitations on the pricing of sugar In the United States, so this is part of reconstruction I mean, it's part of the history of the Civil War and then we look to Hawaii for sugar during the Civil War Can you bring us up to speed on?

01:06:13.000 The United States had reconnoitered Pearl Harbor 20 years earlier and said this is the most ideal port in the Pacific if we want to expand into the Pacific.

01:06:24.000 And so these two motives collided or collaborated and cooked up this scheme to overthrow the Hawaiian Kingdom, annex the Hawaiian Islands to the United States.

01:06:40.000 And secondly, the United States will have open access to the port of Pearl Harbor.

01:06:47.000 They concocted this scheme in 1893, overthrew the government, took over.

01:08:58.000 So now the furthest place in the world, from any other place in the world, requires ships to bring in 90% of its food.

01:09:08.000 Now if you think that sounds bad, it's about to get worse, folks, because of something called the Jones Act.

01:09:14.000 The Jones Act, which I think is actually a good act, it supports domestic shipbuilders and shipping, which means that all ships going to Hawaii have to come from U.S.

01:09:29.000 Hawaii should be exempt because it's in the middle of the ocean, halfway between Asia and the United States.
