00:00:00.000
Salaam alaikum guys and welcome to another episode of Salaam Dining. Today we're in Accra in Ghana
00:00:14.280
and this is the DNR Turkish restaurant. Let's take a look inside.
00:00:30.000
We're inside now. We're having a look through the menu. There's a lot of salads on the menu.
00:00:52.320
Look at that. I've never seen that many salads on the menu but also on this menu there's a lot of
00:00:57.600
images. Every single meal has a different image on it. So you know what it should look like.
00:01:03.120
So you're about to try Turkish Aydan. This is probably one of my favorite drinks. This is like Lassiye.
00:01:18.240
Definitely needs more salt. You need sugar bro. Are you putting more salt in that?
00:01:23.360
That's how it's supposed to be. This is meant to be, this is meant to be sweet.
00:01:30.320
What's wrong with you? This is meant to be sweet.
00:01:35.120
Like mango or something. MashaAllah, look at that.
00:01:40.240
Why are you laughing at? Show yourself in the mirror.
00:01:43.760
Okay guys, so what time did you order your food?
00:01:53.120
Exactly 7.15pm. No, no, no. They didn't go yet. Just, he left a minute ago. So what time is it now?
00:02:09.760
Somebody, some, some, some, some intelligence has told us that you guys had a special time in Iraq.
00:02:18.480
Don't worry about that. What happened in Iraq? We know what happened in Iraq, stays in Iraq.
00:02:28.960
In Iraq, in February 2017, we actually came from the ISIS drone attack when we were delivering aid on the front line on the eastern part of Boston.
00:02:44.320
I'm getting used to this thing, you know. This thing's alright, you know.
00:02:48.800
Can you tell, can you tell us, can you tell us,
00:02:50.960
Can you tell us what happened? It's like every second. How did it happen?
00:02:58.720
So, one of the many places around the world that we work is Mosul.
00:03:07.680
We were deployed to Mosul to do a water project with UNICEF, a human relief foundation.
00:03:16.720
And the project was basically to take water into Mosul. On a daily basis, about 1.5 million meters of water every single day.
00:03:25.680
This water would go into the city of Mosul. While there was a war going on, at that time,
00:03:30.720
it was the most, you know, dangerous battle going on in the whole world.
00:03:35.920
And we take water in every day. Now, one day, while we were there,
00:03:40.000
we basically got surrounded and held at gunpoint by some masked men.
00:03:48.640
So, they had balacramas on, they were wearing porn black, they had really big buns.
00:03:53.840
And they stopped our cars, and they basically wanted us to get out of the cars, carried out.
00:04:00.960
So, obviously, it was a military tech bike. When we got stopped, someone came riding on a bike.
00:04:06.640
Do you remember that guy? It was a bike riding on a bike, shouting at the top of his voice,
00:04:10.960
get behind the building, drones, drones, drones. We thought this was like a play or some acting.
00:04:17.760
The army guys came to our cars and said, get the hell out of the cars. Drones are coming.
00:04:21.680
But as soon as we stepped up, they were not army guys.
00:04:25.600
To be clear, they were militia. These guys are lawless. They're goons, they're bounty hunters.
00:04:32.880
They're not the army. They're out just to benefit themselves and to cause trouble.
00:04:39.440
That's why it was scary. They weren't the army.
00:04:42.880
So, anyway, we got out of the car, and then all we could hear was the sound of like a mini helicopter.
00:04:49.360
We didn't know what to do. We didn't know what was going on.
00:04:50.880
You can hear it, but you can't see it. That's how high up it is.
00:04:53.760
So, above you is like, like that sort of sound.
00:04:56.640
And at that point, there's just panic, like major panic. We got one guy that's telling us,
00:05:03.120
oh, everybody get in the car. There's another guy saying, don't get in the car.
00:05:07.760
If you get in the car, the car will become the target.
00:05:10.800
Same way the guys that were, you know, trying to, like, kidnap us or take us or whatever.
00:05:17.680
They turn around and they start shooting because these ISIS guys now were shooting at them.
00:05:22.880
So, we're in the middle of a gun battle between these two groups and we're just taking cover.
00:05:29.680
And then, out of nowhere, just, Alhamdulillah, they shot it down and it fell about 500 to 600 meters
00:05:36.160
away from where we were standing, which is not that far to be honest.
00:05:40.400
So, we got in the cars, we evacuated. The one thing that stuck in my mind is literally about 200 meters
00:05:46.000
from where that happened when we were in the car. I looked out as we were driving off,
00:05:49.120
and there was a woman from here washing all the night and there were three kids playing in the street,
00:05:54.240
like it's normal, like it's nothing. When this bomb went off, I hit the floor. I was on the floor,
00:06:01.520
the ground was shaking, I was shaking, my heart was shaking and it's got to be like the scariest moment of my life.
00:06:10.160
Definitely one of the most scariest moments of my life. And then, to run away from that,
00:06:18.400
literally when everybody starts shooting at each other, but looking around us and everybody's still
00:06:23.680
living normal life, people are walking on the streets, kids are playing, like you said,
00:06:28.000
a woman's putting a washing out. It's absolutely crazy.
00:06:31.280
So, we got out of Mosul as quick as we could. We got to a military checkpoint. Those guys there,
00:06:37.440
they took us in. They gave us some security and that was just another day in Mosul. The next morning,
00:06:45.440
we got off and went back and we did the same thing. Work never stops. All right, let's start
00:06:51.760
picking up the standards. Complimentary things like salads, city sauce. I don't do chili.
00:07:01.280
So, it's 24 minutes past seven. So, it's about seven minutes since we ordered and the standards have come.
00:07:09.440
Now, the real test is how long are the beans going to take? Because if I eat all of this,
00:07:16.160
I'm not going to be able to eat my fish. Now, hummus is typically in Arabic. We're in Ghana.
00:08:33.280
Nizo, what does it say on your t-shirt since you talked about Iraq?
00:08:43.280
This might look affiliated with certain things, but it's not.
00:08:54.280
It's a clever idea because we as Muslims get stereotyped a lot.
00:08:57.280
Especially with what's going on in the media and a lot of things that happen over here.
00:09:01.280
So this has actually helped spark conversation with people in the streets.
00:09:07.280
And when you explain it to them, they actually think about it from how we expect it.
00:09:10.280
Which is, I think, a really, really clever way to engage with people.
00:09:14.280
And to prove to them the misconceptions about Islam are rubbed.
00:09:25.280
We're going to be going through a 10-point checklist to rate this restaurant on the food that was given.
00:09:31.280
But also, if you check the link below in this video, we're out here in Ghana.
00:09:35.280
We're building education facilities, mosques, water wells, and all these other services.
00:09:39.280
For all the people in Ghana who are really deprived.
00:09:45.280
Personally, I want to say, I'm not a fan of Turkish food.
00:09:48.280
But, that being said, I can't knock the quality of the food.
00:09:56.280
Compared to everything else that's in this area, the quality of the food here was...
00:10:04.280
Even compared to Turkey, I thought here was really, really good quality.
00:10:16.280
Especially, we have to take into consideration the environment that we're in.
00:10:19.280
And there's no other food like this in this area whatsoever.
00:10:30.280
They're good intentions, but I think, another thing, again, we have to take into consideration
00:10:39.280
is where we are and the character of the people.
00:10:46.280
When we wanted to order, we had to ask three or four times.
00:10:49.280
And it's not like the guy was busy doing anything.
00:10:55.280
And for that, they're going to lose points with me.
00:11:17.280
So, ten minutes after that, that was enough time for us to have our starters.
00:11:26.280
Eleven minutes was enough time for us to have our starters.
00:11:31.280
You know, sometimes you have your starters and you sit around for a bit, you hit them
00:12:00.280
Which isn't a good thing because it means that some food is getting wasted.
00:12:05.280
But I think also because of the hummus and the starter, that's probably why I didn't finish
00:12:10.280
My kebabs, they, I specifically told the guy that I don't want the bread.
00:12:15.280
And he says, I'm going to, the bread comes with it anyway.
00:12:25.280
And even when I stopped him, he still was trying to insist that he comes with it anyway.
00:12:30.280
I'd say three, but I think you're right, you know.
00:12:31.280
Because there's obviously a lot of food that's still left.
00:12:36.280
We've eaten, you've got to remember, we don't eat much longer, are we here?
00:12:50.280
You've got to remember, we don't eat much longer, are we here?
00:12:55.280
If we didn't eat anything, and this was our one meal that we always come and eat,
00:13:19.280
We'll rate it for somebody that's coming from Britain.
00:13:44.280
For the locals, if their daily salary is 10 CDs or less than 10 CDs, then they'd have to work for four days to be able to...
00:13:55.280
They couldn't buy my meal on their daily salary.
00:14:02.280
Because there are some people here who can afford it.
00:14:06.280
Again, just comparing it to the local market and how things are, we'll go two.
00:14:11.280
So four if you're from the UK, two if you're a local.
00:14:18.280
Like a separate section, sitting area for families.
00:14:51.280
Alhamdulillah, everything on the menu, all the food on the menu is halal.
00:15:00.280
But the thing is, I'm going to have an issue with that.
00:15:06.280
I think they do have a separate outdoor area where they do smoking shisha.
00:15:14.280
Now, that's down to how people feel about shisha.
00:15:32.280
We're playing Akon's old album while we've been here.
00:16:18.280
We have to take into consideration the local Canadian culture.
00:16:22.280
They don't really have a culture of segregation.
00:16:39.280
So I think they've got very, very good quality food.
00:16:47.280
I think the only thing really letting it down is...
00:17:02.280
So if you want us to come and review any more of your restaurants.
00:17:06.280
If you want us to come and review any of your restaurants in the UK.
