00:00:00.000 Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and folk of all ages, you know what time it is.
00:00:28.620 And I can't believe it, we're already a month into the new year
00:00:32.920 But it's that time to go over the holidays and heroes
00:00:37.360 For the month of February
00:00:39.840 Alrighty, so of course on the 9th of the month
00:00:45.420 We have the Day of Remembrance for Ivan Kinriffy
00:00:50.300 And we'll follow that up on February 17th
00:00:54.420 With Charming of the Plow
00:00:56.100 So, let's get right down to it and learn a little bit about the Days of Remembrance and Holidays of our people.
00:01:06.340 As I said, on February 9th, the Austro-Folk Assembly celebrates a Day of Remembrance for Ivan Kinrifi.
00:01:16.140 Near to what could be considered the beginning of the Christian conversion of Norway,
00:01:21.700 under King Olaf Tryggvason, there was a farmer of noble stock
00:01:27.460 who stood against the king in his attempts at conversion.
00:01:32.880 Ivan Kinrithi was called to make plans against the upcoming invasion
00:01:38.080 by his friend Herak of Fliota,
00:01:41.860 who had very recently returned after himself refusing conversion to Christianity.
00:01:47.360 Ivan answered the call, and for the sake of haste, he traveled with only a small retinue
00:01:54.680 of men.
00:01:56.540 He was well welcomed by Herrick, but shortly after his arrival, Ivan was ambushed.
00:02:04.400 Unbeknownst to Herrick, he had been followed by some of Olof Trigvason's men.
00:02:10.040 They forced Ivan to Thrandhain, where Olof attempted to convert Ivan, first with offers
00:02:16.800 of land and gold, then with threats of torture and death.
00:02:22.680 Unwilling to turn his back on his faith, Ivan was eventually killed.
00:02:29.340 So what can we learn from this story?
00:02:32.660 On the 9th of February, as we stop to remember Ivan Kin Riffey and his unwavering faith despite
00:02:40.240 the consequences. Take a moment to consider what in your own life is important to you.
00:02:47.180 Have there ever been times in which you had to choose between keeping your faith
00:02:51.320 and losing something else? A job, a friend, family? Even in these times when we are living
00:03:00.380 with unparalleled freedom of choice, it can be difficult to choose faith over all else.
00:03:07.100 It is sometimes easier to hide behind the idea of a pseudonym or to keep your faith hidden from those in our lives that shouldn't matter.
00:03:16.580 Remember, when you think of Ivan, what truly matters.
00:03:23.040 Stand strong with and take pride in your folk.
00:03:27.740 Hail, Ivan Kinrithi!
00:03:29.840 Following the Day of Remembrance, we have, of course, our holiday, and it follows on
00:03:38.480 February 17th, with Charming of the Plow.
00:03:43.760 Charming of the Plow is a ritual that takes place at the early beginning of the planting
00:03:48.360 season.
00:03:49.700 As the name implies, the plow, or other tools used, are blessed and offerings are made to
00:03:56.660 the gods for a productive growing season.
00:03:59.840 Traditionally, after blessing the plow, a ceremonial thorough was dug, and then filled with cakes or other offerings.
00:04:10.060 For our ancestors, this was a crucial time of the year.
00:04:15.120 Poor preparation often led to a poor harvest, and a poor harvest led to starvation.
00:04:24.240 Asatru is the modern celebration of our ancestral heritage.
00:04:29.840 The charming of the plow symbolizes our willful penetration of the unyielding soil.
00:04:35.840 It is with our own industriousness, our own will, that we create, that we change, that we provide.
00:04:45.840 In the Astro Folk Assembly, we often celebrate the charming of the plow by planting a tree. 0.93

00:06:30.100 Take an idea and make a plan.
