In this episode, we take a deep dive into the lore surrounding the name of the goddess Frigg. We discuss her etymological connection with the goddess Freya, and how the names of two goddesses can be confused, and why we should honor them properly.

00:00:00.000 too that some people might say oh well you guys are discounting say like etymology or something

00:00:05.920 like that there's there we are we we greatly try to uh place about with that that in mind for lore

00:00:15.200 i mean if we look at nerthus and her etymological name being derivative of like the word earth

00:00:22.160 and airsa or hearth or hertha and we see this kind of growth of the name from sourcing from

00:00:28.880 nerth is from from tacitus germania and then we see your yard being the nordic word for the earth

00:00:39.760 and we see that etymological connection but there is a big step there immediately between

00:00:46.000 yard and the precious one frig which the closest that we can gain especially with all of the

00:00:52.960 iterations of of uh frigg's name whether it's it's frico or frijo or fria or free which causes even

00:01:02.240 more infinite confusion with freya um that's a pretty big etymological jump the other thing is

00:01:09.840 is not too far after snorty aside and the sagas aside and the prosetas is that we do know that

00:01:17.280 continental germanic folk honored like frico and i'm referring to the lombardic story in which she's

00:01:24.960 clearly and cleanly mentioned um and that's during the migration period which is even

00:01:31.040 far closer to tacitus's time and they're that that referencing that correlation

00:01:38.720 doesn't there's no connective tissue she's seen very much as the individual goddess

00:01:45.760 that we call frig so i would you know i would argue that unless there's like perhaps maybe some

00:01:52.880 more etymological evidence that that bridges that big gap and again people do that they will bridge

00:01:59.520 that gap in any way they see it and sometimes that can cause a lot of problems but ultimately

00:02:04.480 at the end of the day it's not a science project it's something that we work towards but when we

00:02:09.680 honor them we honor them uh like correctively as we know them in order to again if on the back end

00:02:18.640 secretly somebody says you know swan doesn't know what he's talking about

00:02:22.000 because frig frig and yours are clearly the same well i honor yours and i honor frig i am not any

00:02:31.040 at the loss of reverence but if you choose to mash them together and and and put their names

00:02:38.960 together and say their name is fjord at that point you're doing disservice to divinity and that is

00:02:46.400 where that it causes more complications there's a lot of complications on that mashing road
