00:00:00.000 Hlapn gauder Odens, Odens raven gauder, Odens raven song.
00:00:30.000 also known as Forspjalsliod, or Prelude Poem.
00:00:37.000 This very obscure poem has been regarded as a fragment only of a poem, of which the beginning and end are wanting.
00:00:47.000 With regard to the beginning, the want may possibly be more apparent than real,
00:00:53.000 The Strauss 2 through 5 being in fact a sort of introduction, although they do not strike
00:01:00.940 at first as such.
00:01:04.000 In consequence of the obscurity of the first Strauss, which seems very slightly connected
00:01:09.880 with the following ones, in which the gods and dwarves are described as in council on
00:01:17.380 account of certain warnings and forebodings of their apparent downfall, or Ragnarok.
00:01:25.560 Another point of difficulty is its title, there being nothing in the whole poem to connect
00:01:32.480 it with Odin's ravens, except the mention of Ugr, or Huginn, in the third strophe.
00:01:41.140 Erik Hallsson, a learned Dicelander, after having spent or wasted ten years in an attempt
00:01:48.040 to explain this poem, confessed that he understood little or nothing of it.
00:01:54.640 In its mythology, too, we find parts associated to some of the personages, of which no traces
00:02:02.300 occur in either Samunds or Snorri's Edda.
00:02:07.040 though we are hardly justified in pronouncing it with more than one scholar of eminence,
00:02:13.040 a fabrication of later times.
