00:00:00.000 so as you recall we had done the mitten and in fact nicholas was telling me we have a couple
00:00:26.480 versions of the mitten having been told to our children well i'm going with the um the balance
00:00:33.680 of that which is the hat hey there we go thank you hey hi there so obviously there's a farm
00:00:49.040 lots of farm animals in this picture. I see a goose and a dog and a hedgehog, a pig and a horse
00:00:58.480 and a cat and a chicken. So I think they're all going to play a role in this story. And we can
00:01:04.660 tell the time of year, right? No doubt about it. In fact, they start by saying it is becoming winter.
00:01:10.920 For those of you who live in places like Nebraska, Kansas or the Dakotas, where you have lots of flat land for growing crops,
00:01:30.500 well, you can see where this takes place is very similar.
00:01:33.180 and in the corners on each page you know that she always shows something that's going to be
00:01:40.420 important to see so she starts with socks handmade socks and here she has a hat and
00:01:47.940 this is called the hat
00:01:50.080 and here's a scarf that you would put around your neck and gloves
00:02:01.580 winter was on the way lisa took her woolen clothes out of the chest and carried them outside
00:02:11.520 she was hanging them up in the fresh air when a strong wind blew one of her stockings
00:02:23.980 off the line. So here's her basket for her clothes, and there she is. Look at that.
00:02:35.360 And I bet where you live, there's wind sometimes, and I bet it's very, very cold this time of year.
00:02:40.540 We call that a north wind. And she clipped on all of her clothes, but something blew off,
00:02:48.500 and here it is. See what's going away?
00:02:53.980 Ah, she goes back in the house and it says, Curious Hedgy, he's a hedgehog, found it and poked his nose in.
00:03:04.660 What did he poke his nose in? A sock.
00:03:09.800 When he pulled it out, the stocking was stuck on his prickles.
00:03:15.040 How embarrassing, Hedgy thought.
00:03:19.440 There he is.
00:03:21.840 And somebody's going to be next in the story.
00:03:26.860 He can't get it off because it's stuck on his prickles.
00:03:30.980 And there we have Lisa, who's back at home.
00:03:34.500 But now we have a chicken with chicks. 0.99
00:03:38.000 The mother hen came by with her chicks.
00:03:40.760 Peckle, peckle, she clucked and laughed. 1.00
00:03:44.000 What's that on your head, Hedgie? 1.00
00:03:46.280 why why it's my new hat 0.98
00:03:50.000 he told her isn't it beautiful the mother hen cocked her head 0.99
00:03:56.320 as if she had an idea and then off she ran
00:04:00.720 did he really plan it to be a hat i don't think so
00:04:08.200 but that's what he's telling them
00:04:09.880 here we go here's hedgy again
00:04:16.280 Hedgey saw the noisy gander, a gander's a male goose, looking down at him.
00:04:29.680 The gander laughed. Hedgehog has flipped his gizzard. Laugh today, gander, but tomorrow when
00:04:38.560 it rains. My hat will keep me dry, said Hedgie. The gander thought for a moment, and off he ran.
00:04:48.680 So next in the story is a cat. So let's see. We have the mother hen,
00:04:57.340 and the goose the gander and now a cat
00:05:02.660 and meanwhile Lisa is at home and she's making some hot tea or cocoa
00:05:12.440 the barn cat was watching from a tree as Hedgy tugged at the stalking 0.99
00:05:19.420 meow he called down what a silly looking hedgehog you are with that thing on your head 1.00
00:05:27.580 What a silly looking hedgehog. 1.00
00:05:31.060 But my ears will be warm in a snowstorm, said Hedgy. 0.99
00:05:36.800 He heard the cat and off he went.
00:05:40.820 So there he is up in the tree and he sees Hedgy down below.
00:05:45.740 But he has an idea too.
00:05:48.180 What are all these animals going to do?
00:05:51.820 Ah, next animal, a dog.
00:05:56.740 Ah, the farm dog and her puppies found Hedgie in a patch of brambles.
00:06:05.280 That's like, like blackberry stickers.
00:06:08.400 Hedgie, is that a hat you're wearing?
00:06:10.900 How funny you look, she barked, and her puppies yelped and giggled.
00:06:16.100 But I'll be cozy and dry when it snows, Hedgie said.
00:06:21.420 The farm dog's ears perked up, and off she ran.
00:06:27.580 There they are. 0.89
00:06:29.560 There are the puppies and there's the mama. 0.99
00:06:34.020 And who's next? 1.00
00:06:35.360 A pig. 1.00
00:06:41.000 And now we have Lisa who's sitting at home. 1.00
00:06:43.840 She doesn't know what's going on outside with the animals.
00:06:46.160 She's reading a book. 0.65
00:06:47.840 But now we have a pig and piglets. 1.00
00:06:51.120 Oink, oink, the piglet squealed.
00:06:54.340 What are you up to, Hedgie? 0.94
00:06:55.820 The mama pig asked.
00:06:57.460 Making sure my hat doesn't fall off if an icy wind blows up, said Hedgie. 1.00
00:07:03.400 I see, said the mama pig. 0.99
00:07:06.300 And off she ran. 1.00
00:07:08.720 Take a look at Hedgie. 1.00
00:07:10.500 Look at that silly wolf. 1.00
00:07:12.020 Here we go. 0.99
00:07:13.240 Can you see him? 0.99
00:07:14.060 And there are the little piglets watching the silly animal with a stalking on his head. 0.98
00:07:21.860 And who's next? 0.98
00:07:23.560 Of course. 0.98
00:07:28.580 And here is Lisa, all dressed. 0.97
00:07:32.180 She's wearing a pretty little dress.
00:07:34.000 We're about to look out the window and see what's going on. 0.99
00:07:38.240 Hedgy, what is that ridiculous thing on your head? 0.97
00:07:42.760 The pony snorted at Hedgy. 0.99
00:07:45.060 That was last straw.
00:07:47.540 It's my head, of course.
00:07:49.360 Don't you know that everyone should wear a hat in winter when it's cold and snowy?
00:07:55.000 Hedgie shouted.
00:07:56.640 The pony looked startled. 0.91
00:07:58.640 Hedgie was usually so friendly.
00:08:01.260 Off the pony ran.
00:08:03.140 Now take a look at the top of the page.
00:08:07.360 Let me see if I can get that.
00:08:09.340 I don't know.
00:08:09.960 It's hard to see.
00:08:11.200 But do you remember that clothesline with all the clothes on it that started at the beginning when the stocking flew off?
00:08:18.700 Oh, I see some long underwears in the stalking up there.
00:08:22.140 Hmm. 1.00
00:08:23.920 And there goes Hedgie down the hill. 0.77
00:08:27.600 And who's next in the picture?
00:08:29.680 Why, it's Lisa again.
00:08:33.560 Lisa goes outside. 0.86
00:08:35.380 She's all dressed for winter.
00:08:37.100 There she is wearing her coat.
00:08:39.800 Hedgie just wanted to be alone.
00:08:41.740 He was tired of everyone laughing at him.
00:08:44.360 and with this thing on his head he wouldn't even fit into his den and there he is so very sad by
00:08:53.860 himself with this funny thing on his head but there is lisa running through the woods
00:09:00.900 okay and here's mama mama hand okay had she didn't see lisa running after him
00:09:12.720 the other stocking in her hand. Come back you silly hedgehog she called. Oh no had she thought 1.00
00:09:21.440 even the girl is laughing at me. But here we have a hen with some gloves and we have
00:09:31.160 a goose. I think that was with a hat.
00:09:35.000 and we have a hat with a scarf 0.99
00:09:42.620 and here is lisa lisa caught up and pulled her stocking off of hedgy's head 1.00
00:09:52.080 dickless you ridiculous little hedgehog she laughed 1.00
00:09:56.140 don't you know that animals don't wear clothes and here she is 1.00
00:10:05.000 and there's the rest of the picture. Take a look. She's helping him get the stocking off his head.
00:10:18.300 Kedji headed for his den. It's now off his head. He's fine now, and Lisa started back toward the 0.75
00:10:26.200 clothesline. That's when she saw all of her missing woolens, because we have the pig has clothes, 0.99
00:10:37.240 the pony has clothes, and here they are, the very last picture, pretty close. The animals had taken
00:10:48.300 them, and each one was thinking, now I am wearing a magnificent hat. Look what they did, remember?
00:10:55.360 Hedgie ended up with it by accident. These animals all took clothes and made them into hats 1.00
00:11:03.680 so they could look like Hedgie. They were laughing at them until they got their own hats. 1.00
00:11:14.440 There went all the clothes on the line. 0.92
00:11:16.540 Lisa was still chasing them when Hedgie reached his den how ridiculous they look don't they know
00:11:28.760 that animals should never wear clothes says Hedgie here is the last picture there they are running
00:11:38.060 off with clothes on their heads as hats and there is Hedgie back in his den without the stocking on
00:11:45.620 his head. Wow. You know, sometimes people will put clothes on their pets, don't they? Sometimes
00:11:55.660 you'll see little dogs wearing coats and little sweaters and things like that. I wonder if they
00:12:01.960 like it. I wonder if dogs like wearing those. Well, these animals, although it was very silly
00:12:07.680 of Hedgy to have one, but when it came down to it, they wanted to be just like Hedgy.
00:12:11.340 They all wanted a hat just like his.
00:12:14.120 So that is the story of the hat that became many hats because they all made a hat out of a piece of human clothes.
00:12:22.460 So that's the story, a winter story about staying warm, because that's what they kept saying all along.
00:12:28.820 Stay warm. It's wintertime.
00:12:31.940 So there we go.
00:12:35.740 Did you guys like that? That's fun. Thank you.
00:12:38.540 It's a sweet story.
00:12:39.540 hedgy you know I've always wanted a hedgehog we don't have them here in this country but when I
00:12:46.820 was in Ireland I saw a hedgehog but I think I've been hit by a car that's the only time I've seen
00:12:52.940 one but I always liked the idea of a hedgehog I think I'll have to go back to Ireland and find
00:12:57.660 another one but this is in Europe right this isn't Sweden or Norway probably Norway I think
00:13:04.580 that's where her stories are from and uh it's always fun to read jambrit books but especially
00:13:12.500 her picture she does her own pictures and they're beautiful and they always they predict if you look
00:13:18.740 whatever is on this page it will tell you what's on the next page and if you look here you'll see
00:13:26.080 what's happening here and this one will tell you what's next so enjoy your jambrit books i also have
00:13:31.960 one that's right here it is a compendium of her winter stories and I had another one I'm not sure
00:13:42.760 it is now but it had all of her troll stories and she writes a lot about trolls and how trolls are
00:13:47.960 always into mischief and always squabbling as trolls sometimes do I want to thank you for
00:13:54.860 being here and hope you're all staying warm. You're not going out to the clothesline to get
00:14:03.000 clothes off it and put funny things on your heads today. That would be silly. 0.89
00:14:24.860 Thank you.
