00:17:34.580 But there are a lot of other people making very, very similar arguments.
00:17:38.600 You've got Peter Singer, the famous philosopher, probably best known for advocating euthanasia
00:17:45.440 and the legality of aborting a baby after birth.
00:17:50.280 He is also arguing on the basis of empathy towards sentient beings that computer systems
00:17:58.960 will be conscious and they deserve civil rights, including, say, the right to vote.
00:18:04.980 And then you have the famous new atheist biologist Richard Dawkins, who is saying very much the
00:18:12.220 same, that it should be on the table if it's determined that these systems are conscious.
00:18:16.860 You also have Christophe Koch, head of the Allen Institute for Brain Sciences, who also argues
00:18:23.940 that either the Internet as a whole or more complex artificial intelligence systems are
00:18:28.980 on their way to becoming conscious.
00:18:31.760 And I could go on and on of all the people who are making this argument.
00:18:36.800 And it's again, it may seem ridiculous, but it's getting at least some traction.
00:18:42.440 And if you've got guys at Google, the most powerful corporation on Earth, who there is
00:18:47.980 quite a bit of evidence that they have also the ability to sway American elections through
00:18:53.500 their search results and other methods.
00:18:55.600 I think that even if it is a ridiculous concept to anyone with any sense, it's a concept that
00:19:02.580 is going to confront us going forward as these machines become more and more sophisticated
