00:01:25.460 think is that it was expected that far right would be extremely high actually the far right party lost

00:01:30.840 grounds which proves that when we fight on european issues pro-europe agenda pro-reform agenda

00:01:38.260 pro-democracy and western values agenda as pedro sanchez and the main right-wing party did

00:01:44.280 they can be first and now there are discussions on the coalition that will probably take some weeks

00:01:50.560 but i think it's also a positive signal that far right is not on the rise which cannot be stopped

00:02:02.960 expect today well jonathan as you can see we are seeing thousands of israeli protesters braving the

00:02:11.300 summer heat gathering in front of the israeli parliament in a last-ditch effort to try to stop

00:02:17.420 this legislation earlier on today we saw them blocking roads israeli police using water cannon

00:02:24.000 to try to dislodge them a number of arrests were made but jonathan this is really the last roll of

00:02:31.880 the dice for this protest movement that has been so sustained for seven months leading to what many

00:02:38.160 think is the biggest political crisis in israel's history few people alive today can remember a

00:02:44.820 moment when this country was as divided as it is right now prime minister benjamin netanyahu if he

00:02:51.400 were here would tell you that this legislation is necessary to curb the powers of the unelected supreme

00:02:58.460 court and restore the supremacy of the israeli parliament but many of these demonstrators will say

00:03:04.700 they genuinely believe that if the legislation today goes through it is the beginning of the end

00:03:10.500 of israeli democracy and it is not just the people on the streets who are afraid of that

00:03:15.080 big business today announcing that 150 of israel's largest companies are closing their doors these are

00:03:23.300 shopping malls these are major stores in protest at these legislation and jonathan there is a real danger

00:03:30.640 that what started as a political crisis may turn into a security crisis over the weekends thousands

00:03:36.840 of israeli military reservists have said they will stop showing up for duty if this legislation goes

00:03:43.900 through and this is having a particular impact on the israeli air force in some squadrons in the air

00:03:50.160 force half of the pilots are reservists as opposed to regular duty and if those reservists don't show up

00:03:57.460 it is not clear that the israeli air force can continue to function at full strength we caught

00:04:03.240 up yesterday with guy pull on he is a one of the protest leaders here he's also a former fighter pilot

00:08:21.000 outside groups but it's a global fight of the populist nationalists versus uh the globalist

00:09:01.820 the key takeaway here is there's been a centripetal force in and amongst the electorate pushing the uh

00:09:09.460 the the vote towards the four central largest parties that is the two centrist parties the center left

00:09:17.480 and the center right but then also what's called the far right and the far left uh which which are

00:09:23.940 in neither case worthy of the name um and that's what we've really seen to the expense of the the

00:09:30.780 the the huge plethora of quite smaller parties in fact steve in fact if you take the the the center

00:09:37.540 right and vox together their vote and i'm talking about share of the vote here i'm not talking about

00:09:42.780 seats share of the vote increased from 2019 with 35.9 percent all the way up to 45.5 percent

00:09:53.160 and yesterday the socialists and the hard left they've also seen any increases what i'm saying

00:09:59.540 about the at the expense of all the smaller parties their share of the vote went from 40.9

00:10:05.420 to 44.0 so it's really a concentration around these two polls everyone is saying that the result of

00:10:13.840 vox was disappointing uh and obviously that they've lost about 50 percent of their parliamentary

00:10:19.780 representation but looking at the actual turnout they got 15.1 percent in 2019 and 12.4 this time

00:10:29.560 so their overall share of the vote fell really by 2.7 percent which is which is just disappointing

00:10:37.940 from a certain uh prospect but it's not the absolute meltdown that the parliamentary arithmetic might

00:10:45.320 suggest yeah but this is uh the the key point for people here in the united states this is a populist

00:18:12.400 of similarities um and i'm just gonna pull out a few i think that the best way to look at what's

00:18:17.660 happening is from the vantage point that um angelo codavilla uh laid out in his book the ruling class

00:18:26.080 um and in israel uh our ruling class is more powerful and less concerned about um being modest

00:18:37.620 about their power i would say than you have in other countries where people try to be a little bit

00:18:42.500 more circumspect um and in israel the the ruling classes it lost the majority their electoral majority

00:18:50.060 in the country already uh in the mid-1970s and uh that led to the likud's first rise to power in

00:18:57.840 1977 29 years after israel was formally established in 1948 and since then this class has really

00:19:05.620 continued to control policy on a on on a sometimes on quite a granular level because granular level

00:19:15.100 because uh all of the senior positions in the permanent state of israel are controlled by them

00:19:22.060 and over time as their grip on political power became um

00:19:29.300 more and more impossible to see that they would actually win stable majority coalitions uh be able

00:19:37.340 to uh form a government without right-wing elements or most recently uh anti-israel era political parties

00:19:44.980 that side with israel's enemies um they have expanded through uh fiat um the powers of the permanent

00:19:54.960 state and the institution that's been carrying out most of the absconding of the powers of israel's 0.92

00:20:02.160 elected leaders in our parliament the knesset and in our government um is the supreme court of israel

00:20:09.020 beginning already in the early 1990s some would say in the mid-1980s israel's supreme court began

00:20:16.140 seizing more and more of the powers of the executive of the government and of the knesset they seized for

00:20:22.980 themselves the justices the right that appears nowhere in israeli law to cancel to abrogate duly

00:20:29.540 uh legislated laws by the knesset and also uh duly promulgated policies of the government

00:20:35.880 um and they've done this gradually over time over time they've seized control as well as the of the

00:20:42.000 attorney general's office of state prosecution so they've managed to wield uh supreme power essentially

00:20:50.020 over everything in israel through judicial and later uh bureaucratic fiat um and this has really

00:20:58.940 it was something that happened kind of behind the scenes israelis weren't aware of it they weren't

00:21:04.020 focused on this they seized the power to abrogate laws for instance the week that yitzhak robin was

00:21:09.180 assassinated in 1995 so that everybody's head was uh you know directed in a completely different

00:21:15.340 direction when this happened and um and so they've done this over time and as time has passed more

00:21:24.440 and more israelis from all of these different groups have been harmed by the situation so initially

00:21:31.200 uh there was no public cognizance of what was happening as it was happening and then suddenly you

00:21:37.320 had distinct groups of israelis uh ultra-orthodox jews um religious zionists uh who lived there in

00:21:45.700 in uh israeli communities beyond the uh 1949 armistice lines what are usually derogated as settlements

00:21:53.080 uh in judea and samaria and uh and uh unified jerusalem uh they started being harmed by this because

00:22:00.980 the people who are wielding this power aren't simply apparatchiks who are interested in holding power

00:22:06.620 for power for power's sake but increasingly particularly over the past generations they become

00:22:11.160 hardened anti-religious um anti-nationalist um globalist radicals in sort of your parlance

00:22:21.920 uh who don't believe in a jewish national uh home a nation state of the jewish people uh and whose

00:22:30.320 um and whose uh sort of social milieu is has more affinity to the democrats in the united states the

00:22:40.060 progressives in the united states to the europeans uh in brussels etc so they've been using the power

00:22:47.700 that they've unlawfully seized and and and over all of this period uh through a lot of different things

00:22:55.560 um a block of israelis was formed um of of uh parties that represent groups inside of israel whose

00:23:07.220 rights have been uh harmed by uh the permanent state operating at the leadership of the supreme court

00:23:15.820 and so i've been writing about this issue for over 20 years um and initially i was the only person

00:23:22.860 writing about it in the israeli media and then you know over time more and more and more israelis

00:23:29.740 became cognizant of the problem and even think tanks were formed to deal with it and finally in the

00:23:36.540 last elections that we had on november 1st for the first time we got an absolute majority in the

00:23:43.440 knesset our knesset has 120 members and we got a 64 seat governing majority uh comprised of likud our

00:23:51.560 governing party and another um four uh minor parties that were all to the man and woman committed to

00:24:01.200 judicial reform to placing limits on judicial power and the package that was initially put forward by

00:24:08.240 the justice minister of israel in january is an extremely limited package but the main principle at

00:24:15.160 its core is that there have to be limits on the power of the supreme court there have to be that

00:24:21.840 whatever they are they have to exist they cannot have unlimited power and this uh position which was

00:24:30.060 known i mean everybody ran on this platform together as a block um the the left responded by setting the

00:24:37.420 country on fire and so you have you know you you have wildcat strikes that are illegals you have our 0.99

00:24:44.920 economic elite saying that we're going to have capital flight which we don't have that israel's

00:24:49.840 economy is going to be destroyed you had high-tech uh companies um moguls that were compelling their

00:24:56.540 employees to go out into the street and oppose judicial reform and you know when we're having in the

00:25:04.060 middle of a high-tech crisis globally people are afraid for their jobs and so they have to participate

00:25:09.040 in these things you have bankers saying that they're going to uh that that they're going to lose all this

00:25:15.780 money and that the israeli banking sector is not going to be viable so that it started there and then it

00:25:21.000 moved as you mentioned into the army where um actually in an earlier segment you had this pilot uh speaking

00:25:28.520 to a reporter and that pilot himself is one of the most radical people in israel he's been uh acting as

00:25:38.140 a political activist he has not been a fighter pilot in decades but he used his past operations in the

00:25:44.680 army to present abroad both in french and in english in the media this completely false rendition of

00:25:52.360 events and and uh ginning up this concept which is really just a political or psychological warfare

00:25:58.560 operation against the israeli public and against the israeli media thinking that there's some sort

00:26:03.320 of a critical mass of fighter pilots in the iaf that won't fly missions and this also has been shown to

00:26:08.920 be untrue but it's all part of the same concept of okay you actually won a true governing majority

00:26:15.800 to enact the reforms that over the past decades has been building up and now you want to seize the

00:26:24.160 power that we've seized for ourselves since we lost the majority in israel and you're trying to take away

00:26:31.080 our retention of governing control through the organs of state against the majority of israelis
