00:31:31.260 from thursday friday saturday sunday i just got actually got home to oahu uh yesterday and really

00:31:37.980 every day was significantly different you know it was very dynamic situation changing day by day as

00:31:43.100 fema came in with with their search dogs uh that were really there uh solely to look for human

00:31:49.500 remains um and and then still trying to get out into the outlying communities to get people

00:31:55.180 accounted for where some of these survivors uh had fled um uh you know to areas that they could find

00:33:06.220 death count unfortunately uh possibly in the history of the u.s certainly in the last hundred years

00:33:11.340 uh as far as how the fire got started um there's two prevailing uh theories right now uh one is is

00:33:18.460 like you mentioned a downed power line sparking transformer um the other is there was a known brush fire

00:33:25.740 uh near the area where they believe uh the fire started and this had been handled by the fire

00:33:33.500 department there and at one point the they were they told the they told everyone that it was a hundred

00:33:38.220 percent contained but as the winds kicked up uh the fire kicked up again and and it wasn't out um

00:33:45.980 and so whether that was what ultimately worked its way down uh to rip through lahaina or whether it was

00:33:51.260 a down power line or a combination of both i think there's still some investigating to be done but the

00:33:55.660 reason it was the ferocity of it uh really had to do with uh hurricane dora which was a category four

00:34:03.180 hurricane granted it was five six seven hundred miles off the southern coast of the hawaiian islands

00:34:08.940 but it was still generating 70 to 80 to 90 mile an hour winds along this area in maui and that was

00:34:15.980 enough to just to call to cause what what i heard firsthand descriptions from actually a gentleman who

00:34:23.100 believes his house was the very first uh to catch fire he was out spraying his yard trying to with the

00:34:29.580 hose trying to keep things wet and he what he describes was a fireball knocked him off his feet

00:34:35.100 uh he suffered some significant injuries luckily got out with his family just in the nick of time but

00:34:39.980 but he he basically talked about the the speed that this fire his house was consumed in the matter of

00:34:47.100 one to two minutes it was fully engulfed uh because of the the strong winds that just continued down all

00:34:53.900 the way down uh down the coast um as it traveled uh from from south to north well you were you were

00:35:03.500 there with one of the first aerial groups that got involved tell us what did you and your fellow pilots

00:35:08.380 and others think of the destruction the level of destruction you've seen did it feel like it's from

00:35:12.700 a wildfire uh yeah you know there was it did and in fact comparing it to something like a hurricane

00:35:19.340 um uh it was clearly different it was clear it was clear really early on that we were not going to be

00:35:26.940 looking for survivors as much as as recovering bodies uh the the fire was so hot uh you know and i

00:35:36.140 by the time we got onto the ground and actually in in uh the burned out area um you know there were

00:35:51.260 three days three days after after the event um so the fire got extremely hot melted aluminum melted glass

00:35:58.780 and you could see uh i mean it was just burned buildings down to literally just ash there was there

00:36:05.260 was no there was nothing standing that you could say oh this is where the foundation was it was everything

00:36:10.380 was just ash um i think thankfully there was some i don't know some notice enough that that that um
