00:35:24.740 So, what's happened in the U.S. labor market is that the unemployment rate is very low, right?

00:35:31.480 But the unemployment rate only measures those who've looked for a job in the last four weeks.

00:35:37.100 It does not include working age people, 16 to 64 or 20 to 64 or however you want to define working age.

00:35:45.480 It does not include all the people completely out of the labor market.

00:35:48.780 That is, they're not working and they haven't looked for a job in the last four weeks.

00:35:53.800 And that number and that share has exploded really for six decades now.

00:36:00.180 It long predates COVID, but it does coincide with the rapid increase of immigration since the 1960s.

00:36:07.480 So, you can look at this, oh, so many different ways.

00:36:10.940 But it's especially a problem for men.

00:36:13.720 So, if you were to look at 16 to 64-year-old men and look at those without a bachelor's degree, okay?

00:36:22.060 So, we'll call it the less educated, the 60% that don't have a bachelor's degree.

00:36:26.720 Right now, only about 71% are in the labor force.

00:36:31.500 That is, they're working or at least they're looking for work.

00:36:34.320 The rest are on the economic sidelines.

00:36:36.580 Now, that number is dramatically lower than the 88% it used to be in 1960.

00:36:44.400 In other words, working age men are just working or at least looking for work dramatically less than they used to.

00:36:51.840 And we could talk about one of the big consequences of that, but there's a lot of literature on this.

00:36:58.060 But all the evidence suggests it's a social disaster.

00:37:00.640 Hold on, I just want to make sure people understand this, that when the elites talk about we need illegal alien labor, we need foreign labor to take these jobs, particularly at the lowest skill level.

00:37:14.360 Almost 30% of men with non-college degrees, high school degrees are lower, between 16 and 64 are not even in the workforce, so they're not counted.

00:37:26.300 That's why the elites can say, well, we need these.

00:37:28.360 They're not in the workforce at all.

00:37:30.920 Is that either not in the workforce or looking for work?

00:37:34.820 Right.

00:37:35.360 Now, remember, and it's important to understand this, Steve, that, look, some people are in school.

00:37:40.600 Some people, generally not men.

00:37:42.880 We could go into that literature, but generally not men.

00:37:44.620 But some are taking care of kids, and many or some percentage are disabled.

00:37:48.980 But what we see is an explosion of people who are dependent on their girlfriend, an explosion of men who are dependent on their parents,

00:37:56.460 an explosion of men who just don't do anything.

00:37:59.820 And we know this from other surveys, like the time utilization survey.

00:38:03.280 They just spend much of their time watching TV, sitting on the couch.

00:38:07.040 And it's very much associated with a dramatic increase in things like welfare use, but especially disability.

00:38:14.280 But then there's a whole lot of people who aren't on welfare, aren't disabled, and just aren't doing anything.

00:38:19.440 So you could even, you know, focus in on men who are 25 to 54, and you see the same pattern.

00:38:29.440 In other words, eliminate all college students, eliminate people who might have retired early, but it looks the same, basically.

00:38:35.720 A huge decline in work used to be that if we look, let's say, men without a college degree, again, back in 1960, about 96% of them were near universal labor force participation.

00:38:49.480 Now that's all the way down to 84%.

00:38:51.600 So a huge decline there, even when we look at these prime age men.

00:38:56.140 And one other point, so people get this confused.

00:38:58.480 This has nothing to do with the aging of society, because we're excluding the elderly.

00:39:03.100 And you can even exclude the near elderly, people like me in their late 50s.

00:39:07.360 But you still see the same pattern of a decline.

00:39:11.100 In fact, if you looked at 25 to 34-year-old men, so these are relatively young people.

00:39:17.580 They all should be working.

00:39:18.880 You see exactly the same decline.

00:39:21.580 So what we're seeing is just a whole lot of men who neither work or even look for a job.

00:39:28.760 But this is a societal disaster, right?

00:39:31.440 Because so many things come from this when they're not in the workforce, when they're not – they're able-bodied seamen, as we say in the Navy, but they're not working, right?

00:39:40.400 Or not looking for work.

00:39:41.600 It's a societal disaster.

00:39:44.120 Yes.

00:39:44.580 Some of the social problems that sociology and political science and others have linked to this decline in labor force participation is, as you might expect, crime, right?

00:39:55.540 People who don't work and don't look for work are much more likely to commit crime.

00:40:00.220 But also there's social isolation, depression, overdose deaths from opioids and alcohol poisoning are associated with men out of the labor force.

00:40:10.400 Of course, welfare dependency, higher risks of poverty, higher risks of depression.

00:40:17.340 There's just a whole host of serious social problems from, like I said, suicide to crime that are linked to the rise in the decline of labor force participation.

00:40:29.380 Now, what does any of this have to do with immigration?

00:40:31.200 Well, as you say, one argument for lots of immigration is we just don't have any workers. 0.87

00:40:36.840 But what that is ignoring is the massive decline in labor force participation among America's working age.

00:40:44.480 Right now, if you just took native-born men and women, there are about 44 million out of the labor force who are 16 to 64.

00:40:53.640 Now, that's all education levels, so about 44 million.

00:40:56.780 That's 10 million more than in 2000.

00:41:00.500 And one of the main reasons for that is the decline in labor force participation.

00:41:04.200 That is, there's just lots of people who don't work and don't look for work.

00:41:08.100 Now, obviously, we don't even want them all to be working.

00:41:12.320 Again, some are moms taking care of kids. 1.00

00:41:15.080 Some are in school, though school-age people certainly can work.

00:41:18.660 I did, I bet you did, but the point here is that it's not that we're expecting all 44 million to jump back in or jump into the labor market,

00:41:28.100 but even if you could get 10%, that would be 4.4 million.

00:41:32.940 If you could get 20%, that would add 8 to 9 million people to the labor force.

00:41:38.460 So that is an enormous impact.

00:41:41.120 It's equal to roughly the growth in immigrant workers over the last decade.

00:41:44.940 So the decline in labor force participation, bottom line, has economic, fiscal, and perhaps most of all, negative social consequences,

00:41:56.140 and it's being entirely ignored.

00:41:58.280 And here's the kicker.

00:41:59.640 Why is it being largely ignored?
