So, what's happened in the U.S. labor market is that the unemployment rate is very low, right?

And we could talk about one of the big consequences of that, but there's a lot of literature on this.

But all the evidence suggests it's a social disaster.

Hold on, I just want to make sure people understand this, that when the elites talk about we need illegal alien labor, we need foreign labor to take these jobs, particularly at the lowest skill level.

Almost 30% of men with non-college degrees, high school degrees are lower, between 16 and 64 are not even in the workforce, so they're not counted.

That's why the elites can say, well, we need these.

Now, remember, and it's important to understand this, Steve, that, look, some people are in school.

But what we see is an explosion of people who are dependent on their girlfriend, an explosion of men who are dependent on their parents,

They just spend much of their time watching TV, sitting on the couch.

And it's very much associated with a dramatic increase in things like welfare use, but especially disability.

But then there's a whole lot of people who aren't on welfare, aren't disabled, and just aren't doing anything.

So you could even, you know, focus in on men who are 25 to 54, and you see the same pattern.

In other words, eliminate all college students, eliminate people who might have retired early, but it looks the same, basically.

A huge decline in work used to be that if we look, let's say, men without a college degree, again, back in 1960, about 96% of them were near universal labor force participation.

So a huge decline there, even when we look at these prime age men.

And one other point, so people get this confused.

This has nothing to do with the aging of society, because we're excluding the elderly.

And you can even exclude the near elderly, people like me in their late 50s.

But you still see the same pattern of a decline.

In fact, if you looked at 25 to 34-year-old men, so these are relatively young people.

So what we're seeing is just a whole lot of men who neither work or even look for a job.

Because so many things come from this when they're not in the workforce, when they're not – they're able-bodied seamen, as we say in the Navy, but they're not working, right?

Some of the social problems that sociology and political science and others have linked to this decline in labor force participation is, as you might expect, crime, right?

People who don't work and don't look for work are much more likely to commit crime.

But also there's social isolation, depression, overdose deaths from opioids and alcohol poisoning are associated with men out of the labor force.

Of course, welfare dependency, higher risks of poverty, higher risks of depression.

There's just a whole host of serious social problems from, like I said, suicide to crime that are linked to the rise in the decline of labor force participation.

Now, what does any of this have to do with immigration?

Well, as you say, one argument for lots of immigration is we just don't have any workers.

But what that is ignoring is the massive decline in labor force participation among America's working age.

Right now, if you just took native-born men and women, there are about 44 million out of the labor force who are 16 to 64.
