00:06:21.420 threat but rather just another tribe to be dealt with to make allies with to conquer if you could

00:06:30.860 and so what we saw in new england was that uh some of the tribes there had been weakened by continual war

00:11:16.980 that how how do people even survive and what was squanter's role and then the giving thanks this whole

00:11:22.900 concept of thanksgiving it's important for everybody to understand that both jamestown colonists

00:13:33.280 and they themselves would have turned around and gone back home well the people in plymouth experience

00:19:10.140 uh introduces them to maize among other things and this guy is uh he mediates a defense treaty uh

00:19:20.780 with the wampanoags uh who at that time and we had talked about all these uh intricacies of the

00:19:27.100 defense treaties of the indians the wampanoags had been uh beset with disease and they desperately

00:19:33.260 needed allies and here are these white guys well we'll make them our allies um so squanto was an 0.51

00:19:41.500 indian who was kidnapped earlier around 1614 by a guy named thomas hunt hunt takes squanto to spain

00:19:51.820 as a slave and is planning on selling him and apparently a group of monks for whatever reason

00:19:58.300 by him teach him english and spanish give him his freedom from that point we don't know exactly how but he

00:20:08.060 ends up in england and while in england he apparently meets pocahontas i mean these things are just mind

00:20:16.300 boggling the coincidences here uh if you ascribe them to coincidence so he ends up on a ship back to

00:20:25.100 north america in 1619 where he wants to reunite with his patuxent tribesmen only to find the patuxents

00:20:34.940 are gone uh they've been wiped out and so he settles with the wampanoags who want to have a treaty with 0.99

00:20:43.180 these english and he's the one who ends up negotiating these various uh treaties so

00:20:50.460 hang over a second hold on slow slow down for a second because i think most people if they know

00:25:10.380 to understand that also i might add uh before we go to break here is that uh the pilgrims obviously

00:25:20.060 were a very devout uh religious community in fact uh the the they were so devout they were kicked out

00:25:27.420 of a couple of countries for being obnoxiously devout it didn't stop them from being able to defend

00:25:32.540 themselves i think squanto picked that up right away when he's able to pitch it to his

00:26:59.740 wanted to show that god was blessing you hence uh you were saved and it's interesting that uh this new work

00:27:07.420 on the indians um argues that it was really the massachusetts bay people who kind of cause all the trouble

00:27:14.540 because they expand their numbers keep growing and that was the point that the indians first see 0.96
