00:00:00.000FBI and Justice Department officials are working to arrange interviews with six Democratic lawmakers who appeared in a video advising service members not to follow illegal orders.
00:00:13.120The video enraged President Trump, who posted on social media last Friday that the lawmakers, all of whom have previously served in the military or U.S. intelligence, should be arrested.
00:00:26.000He also accused them of seditious behavior punishable by death.
00:00:32.260The four members of the House who appeared in the video, Jason Crow, Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlender and Chrissy Houlihan, released a joint statement yesterday accusing the president of using the FBI as a tool to intimidate or and harass members of Congress.
00:00:49.860They also defend their actions, writing no amount of intimidation or harassment will ever stop us from doing our jobs and honoring our Constitution.
00:01:02.380This comes as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is accelerating his investigation into Senator Mark Kelly, now directing the U.S. Navy to launch a review of the lawmaker.
00:01:14.500In a memo posted to social media, Hegseth orders the Secretary of the Navy to look into what he calls, quote, potentially unlawful comments made by Kelly.
00:01:27.280Hegseth then asked the Navy Secretary, a former businessman with no prior military experience, to report any findings by no later than December 10th.
00:01:37.500Kelly's comments in question were, of course, part of that message to service members, reminding them of their obligation simply to refuse illegal orders.
00:01:48.500First man, you asked, I think the most emotionally important question, I want to start with you.
00:01:56.580I was a prosecutor in Oakland for seven years, and where justice was warranted and mercy was warranted, I showed it.
00:02:06.880And where, you know, a stiff punishment was warranted because somebody got hurt, I saw it.
00:02:15.300And I will not be a governor that tolerates the violence against women in our state, period.
00:02:20.440Now, as it relates to the issue of trans kids, particularly in sports, men, in women's spaces, harassing, you said it wasn't a thing, 14 times you said it wasn't a thing.
00:02:41.100So I need you to show all the women of California that you're going to protect us.
00:03:56.020There are no trans kids, there are just children. Stop transforming children. No one can make
00:04:09.960a decision that young. When I was 12, I would have transformed. It's wrong, it's wrong, it's abuse.
00:04:18.280Don't trans children. It's abuse. Trans kids. There's no such thing. There's only men and women. Use your brain. Stop with this malarkey.
00:04:29.000Jonathan, just to unpack this briefly, the reason that these six members of Congress felt that it was appropriate, maybe necessary, to briefly remind members of the military that they should not obey illegal orders
00:04:45.400is because the Trump administration, Secretary Hegseth, back in February, essentially moved to neuter the legal advice at the Pentagon that commanders depend on.
00:05:01.560They fired the top three judge adjutant generals who had the military lawyer group, which had the effect of intimidating all of the lawyers in the Pentagon.
00:05:14.120So there was nobody left to say to a commander who asked for legal advice, I believe that order is illegal.
00:05:22.040I believe that, you know, you need to look carefully at that general or admiral. Those people are gone.
00:05:28.240So quite properly to me, these members of Congress who have extensive, you know, admirable military service,
00:05:38.040said that the simplest thing possible, which is people in the military swear an oath to the Constitution, not to a president.
00:05:47.320And they have an obligation not to obey orders that are illegal.
00:05:52.340There were no lawyers left to give them that advice at the Pentagon.
00:05:55.560If there had been, I'm sure they wouldn't have made the statement.
00:05:57.920So that's what lies in the background of this.
00:06:01.120And I think simple truth is people in the military owe thanks to lawmakers who care enough about proper functioning in the military to speak out and say,
00:06:14.920you don't obey illegal orders, which is simple.
00:06:17.280The idea that that somehow is seditious, reminding people of what the Constitution says is sedition.
00:41:31.060But one way or the other, they want to support candidates who are willing to stand up against big tech and are willing to stand up for just sensible regulations and guardrails put on AI.
00:41:45.040And when was this announced and how big is it?
00:41:50.580It was announced yesterday and depending on how much support they can get and what candidates are willing to stand up, it could be enormous.
00:41:58.000This entire fight right now over the moratorium being snuck into the NDAA or the supposed draft of the EO to do much the same.
00:42:10.760What they want to do is ensure that states have the right and the flexibility to craft their own laws.
00:42:18.500They want to see sensible child protection laws put in place.
00:42:22.480And, of course, on our side of this, they want to see strong export controls for chips going to China and other rivals.
00:42:33.020Hopefully, they'll support candidates that are willing to cut China off entirely on this.
00:42:38.060It's very important to understand the money that's flowing in this.
00:42:46.140The money is enormous in this fight, particularly in the moratorium.
