00:38:54.380 And it was in the terms of opinion columns and radio show monologues.

00:38:59.440 And they thought it might be fun to bring some of that to life and curate it,

00:39:05.420 give it to the public and tell a story.

00:39:08.020 Because I started working with Charlie back when Charlie was just Charlie.

00:39:13.240 You know, our first collaboration was over New Year's Day in 2014.

00:39:19.760 and it ran all the way through last year and it included more than just creating content

00:39:26.180 it also included us working on media preparation persuasive communication techniques and even

00:39:35.500 studying political science political theory together and so the the experience exposure

00:39:42.940 I had with him the opportunity to be involved in seeing ideas come together and watching the

00:39:49.280 ideas get expressed. And then finally, being able to watch the ideas change and evolve over time

00:39:55.180 was a little bit unique. I've said to a couple of people, the one thing I know about this book

00:40:01.740 is that while there will be all sorts of different Charlie Kirk books written, and there should be,

00:40:08.260 everyone has a different story, there won't be a second one like this one, because the relationship

00:40:15.680 and the ground we covered together simply was singular.

00:40:19.960 And it was quite a ride for me.

00:40:21.380 It was very unexpected, not something that I had ever trained for, if you will.

00:40:28.500 He discovered me, is the simple truth.

00:40:33.840 Hang on, I want to go through this, because I think when I was at Breitbart,

00:40:37.460 I think we gave him his first job as a writer or the stringer that was going to cover college campuses.

00:40:42.420 It's one of the reasons that some of the Breitbart, the people in the back of Breitbart, were quite enamored with Charlie's pitch initially of a turning point about taking over the student governments.

00:40:51.660 And he wrote for us.

00:40:54.060 One of those columns got found by the people that came in and put in the first money.

00:40:58.940 But one thing about Charlie, and this is what the show was about, the work ethic.

00:41:02.860 When he started off something, it never launched perfectly.

00:41:06.840 In fact, it was quite imperfect.

00:41:07.920 It was Charlie's work ethic behind the scenes that people don't see, like the 10 binders.

00:41:12.600 When Charlie came to Breitbart, he didn't know a lot.

00:41:15.280 You know, he had, I think, gone to a month of college or something.

00:41:19.280 How was it?

00:41:20.840 Walk me through how you and Charlie working together got the guy up a learning curve that

00:41:27.660 when he was assassinated, I would argue that he was the single best communicator of not

00:41:36.280 just political philosophy and practical political policy, but that tough convergence of kind

00:41:41.900 of spirituality, meaning, purpose, and politics.

00:41:45.760 Walk us through how that all came together.

00:41:49.160 Well, I can speak to some of the beginnings of it.

00:41:53.140 You know, one of the great terms that people like to use all the time is they'll talk about

00:41:58.200 the Socratic method, and then you'll say, well, what is that?

00:42:01.820 And they'll say, well, it's asking questions.

00:42:04.140 There's actually a name for that.

00:42:05.780 that's called asking questions. The Socratic method is something that's really quite different

00:42:12.300 and deliberate. It is a process of questioning where the absolute key to asking the second

00:42:19.360 question is listening to the answer to the first. And it's sequential, it's top down,

00:42:25.300 it's big to small, and it is trying to get that person at the end of the process to say to

00:42:32.040 themselves, I never thought of that, or maybe I should think of that differently. And because

00:42:39.700 that's actually a technique, as opposed to something just random, like asking questions,

00:42:46.040 that's something that we were able to work through together. And so, you know, one of the jokes that

00:42:52.820 Charlie and I always used to have with one another was we talked about the 31 and a half years of

00:42:57.460 age difference between us. Felt it was always important to add that half year as if I wasn't

00:43:02.620 old enough. But point being, I'd been on the planet a little bit longer than he had been.

00:43:09.240 So there were some things that I had had the benefit of being able to learn and apply, practice,

00:43:14.620 fail, and all those things. And all I really did was share that experience with him. And certainly

00:43:22.040 he mastered it uh in a way that i could never even imagine right so i'm grateful to have had

00:43:30.580 the opportunity but hang on but hang on hang on i want to hang on i want to drill down on that point

00:43:36.240 because there's thirst for knowledge like i said when we first know him he didn't have a big

00:43:40.500 base to come off of his thirst for knowledge when he said master it walk us through how when he say

00:43:47.060 Charlie Kirk mastered it, and he didn't have a big foundation to start with. How did you guys do

00:43:53.220 that? How did you work with him to get him to master this as far as his intellect goes?

00:44:02.460 Well, by the way, you mentioned Breitbart in early days. In the book, Steve, the first opinion

00:44:10.000 column Charlie ever did was in Breitbart, and it is in the book. He sent it to me, actually,

00:44:16.680 They sent it to me the night we met, and I still had it, and so it's included in the

00:44:21.140 book with the proper setup and credit, if you will.

00:44:25.300 Look, here's what I can tell you with regard to your question, and that it really relates

00:44:30.760 to sort of the intensity of study, the application of intellect to learning, and anything that

00:44:39.700 Charlie and I ever did together.

00:44:41.160 Look, if I was supposed to be prepared, forgive me, but I better have been damn well prepared, because the intensity of the listening, the intensity of the questions, and everything from note-taking to reiteration to following up afterwards, whatever it was we were working on together, he didn't just listen to it in the moment.

00:45:06.000 He was actually listening to it beyond the moment, thinking about it, following up, and became, if there was something he wanted to master, you could take it as a given that he would, and that he would put in the work that was required to do it.

00:45:23.420 And again, I was just kind of lucky enough to be somebody who got to help in that process.
