00:01:59.300 So, I'll share with you some of the wisdom from just one book of the Bible, the fifth Deuteronomy.
00:02:06.300 Deuteronomy 1. Do not show partiality in judgment, chapter 1, verse 17.
00:02:14.560 A compassionate society is built on justice, not compassion.
00:02:19.420 That might sound counterintuitive, but while we should be compassionate in our private lives, the state must be preoccupied with justice.
00:02:29.540 That is the reason for this law. Judges are forbidden not only to show favor to the rich, but also to the poor.

00:04:03.300 as soon as it was first physically published, it came out just this past week,

00:04:22.420 I looked at it, saw that it was the same size as my Genesis and Exodus commentaries,
00:04:29.300 and I just said to myself, when the hell did I write this?
00:04:33.600 So I have asked me the exact same question you just asked me.

00:04:45.980 Listen, and particularly, you know, I was raised, I'm a Roman Catholic,
00:04:50.900 and I know a lot of our evangelicals,
00:04:52.420 and some of the evangelicals have a much deeper grounding in the Old Testament
00:04:57.220 than Catholics and a lot of Protestants.
00:05:00.920 One of the powers of your book, and the reason I recommend it,
00:05:03.060 as you know, we've had you on the show for both Genesis and Exodus,
00:05:06.280 is that if you're not deeply familiar with the wisdom
00:05:09.760 and the power of the Old Testament,
00:05:12.120 there's no better introduction than these books, and it's just so powerful.
00:05:15.260 What I didn't know until I got your volume of this
00:05:18.760 is how prevalent Deuteronomy was in the founding of the nation
00:05:23.200 and the writings of the founders
00:05:24.800 and how much that they extracted from it and used it.
00:05:28.740 Can you tell us about that?
00:05:29.640 This is a foundational text of the American Republic.
00:05:36.700 It's the least known, spectacularly important work.
00:05:40.140 And two examples.
00:05:43.040 The founders,
00:05:44.860 according to an American university professor
00:05:47.680 who did serious research on this,
00:05:49.980 the founders cited
00:05:51.200 Deuteronomy more than any other book,
00:05:54.620 secular or religious,
00:05:55.780 which is astonishing.
00:05:57.300 Second place was the French Enlightenment thinker Montesquieu.
00:06:01.840 And the first was Deuteronomy.
00:06:04.360 And Jesus cites Deuteronomy more than any other book of the Torah,
00:06:08.220 the first five books,
00:06:09.460 and any other book of the Bible except for the Psalms.
00:06:13.420 So it just gives you an idea.
00:06:15.680 And it makes perfect sense.
00:06:16.920 It has the Ten Commandments,
00:06:18.080 which are also in Exodus.
00:06:20.140 But it has 240 laws.
00:06:24.240 A society that were just governed by Deuteronomy
00:06:26.600 would be a beautiful society.
00:06:29.080 It's, however, people,
00:06:31.680 their eyes glaze over when they read it.
00:06:33.920 They don't stop and realize
00:06:36.000 the staggering significance of the book.

00:06:57.940 you can see this in the quandary we're in,

00:07:05.160 and evasion of the southern border,
00:07:07.320 geopolitical, all that,
00:07:08.880 but the deeper moral crisis that we're in right now

00:07:13.360 and kind of we've lost our moorings, right?
00:07:15.980 Or maybe the MAGA movement,
00:07:19.220 maybe the conservative movement
00:07:20.060 had lost their moorings,
00:07:21.040 but the nation has definitely lost its moorings.
00:07:22.920 And that's what I think is so powerful about this book.
00:07:24.800 So tell me your favorite,
00:07:26.040 the 240, what is Dennis Prager's top?
00:07:28.060 Yes, so this is proof to me
00:07:32.580 that human beings alone
00:07:35.360 could not have written this stuff.
00:07:37.020 It is so staggeringly different
00:07:39.960 from the rest of the world then
00:07:41.800 and the rest of the world
00:07:43.580 for the next 3,000 years.
00:07:46.160 So there's a law
00:07:47.580 that if an Israelite goes into battle
00:07:50.060 and they're victorious
00:07:52.280 and he sees a woman he wants,
00:07:56.060 he cannot touch her.
00:07:58.380 He can, however, take her to his house
00:08:00.660 where she is to sit
00:08:04.140 and mourn her family for 30 days.
00:08:07.560 Again, he cannot touch her.
00:08:08.900 All he does is provide her shelter and food

00:08:14.860 who presumably died.
00:08:17.160 And then if he wants her,
00:08:20.520 he can only have her if he marries her.
00:08:25.300 So think about the amount of rape
00:08:28.240 in virtually every war in human history.
00:08:31.180 And in the last World War II,
00:08:36.240 the amount of rape by Soviet soldiers

00:08:41.140 it was considered booty.

00:09:39.540 excuse me,
00:09:40.460 is second or two.
00:09:44.840 And Nami is from nomos,
00:09:47.020 meaning law.
00:09:48.540 This is, so to speak,
00:09:49.640 the second law.
00:09:50.660 It's all,
00:09:52.200 unlike the other books,
00:09:53.480 this is all Moses speaking.
00:09:55.180 He is recapitulating the laws
00:09:58.300 and the events
00:09:59.480 of the previous books
00:10:01.360 of the Torah,
00:10:02.620 of the first five books.
00:10:04.440 So that's why this is so significant.
00:10:08.400 The man who spoke with God
00:10:10.200 more directly than anyone
00:10:11.760 in the Old Testament,
00:10:13.820 then it says that,

00:10:15.880 only Moses ever spoke God

00:10:19.260 Of course, it's a metaphor.

00:10:41.520 the need to obey God.

00:40:37.300 He just would wouldn't hear about it.
00:40:39.920 She was his daughter and he wasn't going to
00:40:41.820 budge on that during one of her hospitalizations,
00:40:45.920 child protective services came in and they
00:40:48.880 would not allow the girl to be discharged to
00:40:51.840 her family for that reason, because the father
00:40:55.580 refused to call her by a different name, a boy's
00:40:58.520 name, and refused to use male pronouns.
00:41:01.500 This father has not seen his daughter for three
00:41:06.800 years, three years that the department of child
00:41:12.760 protective services took her away from a loving,
00:41:17.480 wonderful family.
00:41:20.880 This could happen to any family.
00:41:23.880 People need to know that you're not immune.
