00:00:00.640 Hello, Simone! I'm excited to be here with you today. Today is going to be a fascinating episode.
00:00:06.640 We will be going over a line that C.S. Lewis called the most embarrassing line in the Bible.
00:00:14.320 For those unaware, C.S. Lewis is the extremely pro-Christian apologist who wrote the Narnia series.
00:00:20.400 We are going, and it is connected to another line that the writers of the Bible erased in most translations.
00:00:28.820 it was considered so embarrassing erased wait so they're like i'm samuel johnson whatever and i'm
00:00:38.820 translating the bible and i'm i get to this one line and i'm like oh it's it's funnier than that
00:00:45.440 really syntactic who was a a scribe from the year 300 okay what we have from him is a bible because
00:00:56.180 you know, scribes would copy a Bible. And so this was as far back as the year 300.
00:01:00.560 And you see this line with dots over it, which means erase this line. And then somebody erased
00:01:09.280 the dots. And so what- So it was to like remove the fact that we didn't even know what was being
00:01:15.580 removed. No, what this is a sign of is two scholars, 300 years after Christ, having a fight
00:01:23.540 about whether or not this line was so embarrassing it needed to be removed wow well in terms of that
00:01:29.360 historical jesus lecture series that i'm obsessed with something that's embarrassing to jesus or
00:01:34.180 people who want to believe in jesus is probably more likely to be true right but here's the kicker
00:01:39.240 okay all of these lines if you keep them in yeah are some of the best and most unbelievable
00:01:47.520 prophecy and proof that the bible has a divine inspiration and this is why you shouldn't try to
00:01:54.840 cover up what may seem like flaws because you don't know you don't know Einstein did the same
00:01:59.340 thing he tried to in his math if you're familiar with this famously he couldn't explain something
00:02:04.460 he's like but then that would mean you could have it go into the negatives and if it went into the
00:02:08.600 negatives that just doesn't make sense so I'm gonna say it never does that and then it turns
00:02:12.600 out like 40 years later actually that was a prediction of a major part of how physics works
00:02:17.760 specifically here when einstein first finished general relativity and applied it to the universe
00:02:25.560 as a whole the equations naturally allowed the cosmos to expand and contract at the time that
00:02:31.160 seemed physically absurd to everyone including einstein who assumed the universe was static and
00:02:35.600 eternal so he added an extra term the cosmological constant whose job was to counteract gravity
00:02:41.220 and keep the universe from changing size he later called this his greatest blunder and dropped the
00:02:46.900 term after hubble showed and the universe was actually expanding decades later in 1998 supernova
00:02:53.980 results revealed that the expanse was accelerating that term came back as the simplest description of
00:03:02.480 dark energy the dominant component in the universe today the ugly patch he inserted to stop the mass
00:03:08.960 from doing something that quote-unquote didn't make sense turned out to be a genuine prediction
00:03:13.420 exactly yeah don't yeah just because something seems like a truth seems difficult doesn't mean
00:03:20.700 it's not the truth yeah or something to hide um and i will note if you're like oh well maybe it
00:03:27.180 was actually a wrong line and it needed to be erased um and uh this was the line that the sun
00:03:34.060 would not see the end of times coming that's specifically the line they tried to erase in
00:03:38.540 this larger section that we'll be reading um it's in mark it's all over mark uh it's only in matthew
00:03:45.240 where they erased it which is a basically an identical scene take place um and people can say
00:03:49.880 wait wait wait wait why did they erase it from matthew and not mark that's a good question yeah
00:03:56.040 which is a very interesting little mystery to start with the answer is is because mark
00:04:01.540 was almost never read and you can say wait that's confusing isn't mark the oldest of the bibles
00:04:09.920 yeah mark presumably the most close to accurate of the bibles right well yes that is true
00:04:20.140 but that created a problem which is if the other bibles are copying mark and adding stuff to mark
00:04:27.160 they would seem like if you're a scholar or a researcher and you want to talk about what's in
00:04:32.020 the bible there's no reason to read mark because mark is covered by everyone else because everyone
00:04:37.800 else is copying and expanding on mark note here it used to be thought that john did not have access
00:04:48.040 to mark but now we think he did have access to mark he just didn't really rely on it as much as
00:04:53.940 the other gospels. So, and worse than that, Mark doesn't have a lot of the stuff you want it to
00:05:01.100 have. It doesn't have Jesus coming back after death. It only has an empty tomb. It doesn't have
00:05:06.660 a Virgin Mary birth. It doesn't have Jesus giving the church or any signs, not even the scant signs
00:05:16.380 that we see in other texts, anything about Peter is supposed to be running the church afterwards.
00:05:20.320 um and so it just wasn't useful for catholic authorities or scholars to debate about
00:05:25.640 until they basically forgot it um and so it didn't get covered up there in the same way
00:05:31.660 which is how we know this isn't just like a scholarly misunderstanding this was almost
00:05:35.340 certainly in the earliest version of this wow oh my goodness this is fascinating
00:05:40.980 yes uh so here i'm going to read the uh c.s lewis line in context okay and this line
00:05:49.240 one that simone is very familiar with because she has cited it in past episodes i think even
00:05:53.980 in past treks and i'm always like simone you need to stop listening to the historic jesus scholars
00:05:58.140 here you need to read the line in context and see if it makes sense which i don't think you
00:06:02.760 ever went back and did no because i still haven't made it to the new testament get me taught the
00:06:07.260 old testament's big it's very big it's that's not the way i actually found all this when i was
00:06:12.380 researching uh what we should do for um the sabbath and i and i ran into this and i was like i should
00:06:17.360 read that whole thing in context again. And I read it and I was like, oh my God, this makes so much
00:06:20.800 sense. And I'm going to read it to you without explaining it first to see if you can catch what
00:06:25.260 it really means. Because it's actually incredibly clear and plain when you read the text, what it
00:06:31.520 means. Okay. So note here, he says, say what you like. We shall be told the apocalyptic beliefs
00:06:40.120 of the first Christians have been proven to be false. It is clear from the New Testament that
00:06:44.840 They all expected the second coming in their own lifetime, and worse still, they had a reason,
00:06:49.400 one which you will find very embarrassing. Their master had told them so. He shared and indeed
00:06:54.400 created their delusion. He said so in so many words, this generation shall not pass till all
00:06:59.580 these things are done. And he was wrong. He clearly knew no more about the end of the world
00:07:04.760 than anyone else. It is certainly the most embarrassing verse in the Bible, yet how teasing
00:07:10.900 also that was in 14 words of it should come another statement and this is part of the one
00:07:15.860 that they tried to erase but of that day and that hour no it's no man no not the angels which are
00:07:23.400 in heaven neither the son but the father the one exhibition of error and the one confession of
00:07:30.760 ignorance go side by side so if you weren't following c.s lewis's take on this line is
00:07:37.540 well, Jesus does make an inaccurate prediction, but then right afterwards, he says he might make
00:07:43.300 inaccurate predictions around this exact topic. Now, the line that everybody erases from this
00:07:48.560 is neither the sun, because that causes a lot of problems for traditional Christianity.
00:07:53.840 And I'll note here when we get into this verse, the way that I am reading it,
00:07:59.460 while it does have some unique elements, it's actually closer to the way that it was read
00:08:04.180 by the early christian church and a huge number of christian scholars historically it's just that
00:08:12.260 we forgot that this is how it was read in the 1900s when like pentecostals and certain like
00:08:18.620 baptist groups became very very obsessed with the apocalypse and began to want to apply this
00:08:23.800 verse to the apocalypse and so they forgot that this is the way that everyone or not everyone but
00:08:29.840 a large portion of christians had always understood this verse at least the educated ones
00:08:34.180 All right. So now we're going to go to Mark, and we'll read through this.
00:08:38.140 Okay.
00:08:39.820 So this is Mark 13, the destruction of the temple and signs of the end times.
00:08:45.800 So as Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him,
00:08:50.040 Look, teacher, what massive stones, what magnificent buildings.
00:08:54.960 Do you see all these great buildings? replied Jesus.
00:08:58.400 Not one stone here will stand left on another.
00:09:01.720 Everyone will be thrown down.
00:09:03.180 Now, you've probably already noticed something really interesting here.
00:09:06.980 What happened within a generation of Jesus dying, Simone?
00:09:13.480 Something really interesting, unique to all of Jewish history?
00:09:18.520 I'm bad with this.
00:09:19.640 The temple was destroyed?
00:09:20.860 Okay, right, okay.
00:09:22.080 Yes.
00:09:22.480 Yeah, okay, I forgot.
00:09:24.060 The temple.
00:09:24.640 So Jesus walks out of the temple, okay, with the guys, and they're all looking at the stone temple,
00:09:30.140 And they go, this is the most miraculous architecture I've ever seen in my entire life.
00:09:34.500 And Jesus is saying, this ain't going to last.
00:09:36.980 And then Jesus says, this is all going to be destroyed.
00:09:41.340 Okay.
00:09:42.860 Completely. 0.98
00:09:46.000 Consider that presumably the more conservative reading of this, the one that Christians who are traditional Sunday school Christians will clown on us with, 0.66
00:09:57.220 is Jesus didn't actually mean the bricks he was pointing to.
00:10:01.980 He didn't actually mean the buildings that his disciple had said,
00:10:06.540 wow, these are so impressive, we're going to fall down.
00:10:09.520 What he was actually talking about was buildings that would be built in their place
00:10:14.260 thousands of years in the future, meant to look like them or represent them for pathetic reasons.
00:10:20.780 Whereas if you take a simple reading of this, what he said was,
00:10:24.640 Hey, these buildings that we are talking about right now will be destroyed within your lifetime, which they were.
00:10:34.840 And not just that they were, but no one would have predicted that they would be.
00:10:40.420 Can you not hide in my room?
00:10:43.660 Actually, I'm going to hide in the sea, but it might be fun to hide in the sea.
00:10:49.060 it's actually a temple find me in what is that
00:10:54.240 then we got mr c.s lewis here being like it's a complete mystery and an embarrassment that he
00:11:01.000 said that this temple that i'm looking at is going to be destroyed was in a generation
00:11:05.300 and never rebuilt right um uh now no the foundations of the temple are still there
00:11:11.700 but it was functionally completely destroyed and that's a crazy prediction to make this
00:11:16.920 specifically because it had been destroyed before, but it was rebuilt. In fact, it was rebuilt not
00:11:22.140 long before this, right? They were, I think, in the process of rebuilding it when Jesus would
00:11:27.940 have been saying this, right? So this would have been an incredibly crazy thing for him to say at
00:11:32.760 this particular period. Okay, I'm continuing here. As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives
00:11:38.480 opposite the temple, which I've been to, interesting place, you can still go there,
00:11:42.040 Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,
00:11:45.320 tell us, when will these things happen?
00:11:47.540 And what will be the signs that they are about to be fulfilled?
00:11:50.580 So if Jesus is talking about the temple being destroyed,
00:11:55.040 which I think in no uncertain terms he's talking about there, 1.00
00:11:58.820 and this is why a lot of modern apocalyptic Christians
00:12:01.920 need the temple to be rebuilt.
00:12:04.580 Because if you apply this to a future time, right,
00:12:07.420 then the temple needs to be rebuilt so it can be destroyed again.
00:12:09.460 if you're looking at the current time jesus is saying this temple is about to be destroyed
00:12:13.220 then all of his followers come to him and they go okay when is this temple going to be destroyed
00:12:16.820 okay yeah yeah yeah yeah and then jesus said to them watch out that no one deceives you
00:12:22.260 many will come in my name claiming i am he and will deceive you when you hear of wars and rumors
00:12:28.660 of wars do not be alarmed such things must happen but the end is still to come nation will rise
00:12:35.700 against nation and kingdom against kingdom there will be earthquakes in various places and famines
00:12:40.540 these are the beginning of birth pains now note here this was literally about to happen to these
00:12:47.780 people in this period right were there earthquakes as well like documented during this period i don't
00:12:53.080 know if there was an unusual number i can look it up afterwards but it doesn't matter if it's
00:12:56.000 unusual as long as there were earthquakes as long as there were earthquakes and famines
00:13:00.260 multiple that is to say he did plural it so as a note here there was actually earthquakes during
00:13:08.420 this time the dead sea scrolls and in getty and elsewhere record a seismic event around the year
00:13:14.900 31 bce researchers date this it was around a five-year degree or date of certainty now note
00:13:23.120 the dead sea scroll community would have had no reason to corroborate anything that was happening
00:13:29.440 in the New Testament. And yet many believe that this earthquake could have been the earthquake
00:13:35.360 that was mentioned in Maspew's gospel at the crucifixion, because the dates line up very
00:13:40.520 exactly, or very, very close to exactly. In addition to that, there was also famines during
00:13:46.780 this period. There was a famine under Claudius, 45 to 48 CE. Josephus describes a severe famine
00:13:54.300 in jerusalem and judea during the procureship of tiberius julius alexander roughly 46 to 48 ce
00:14:02.100 grain prices spike during passover quin helena of abigail a convert to judaism who had come
00:14:09.720 on a pilgrim brought grain in alexandria and dried frigs in cyprus and distributed them
00:14:14.960 her son aizates also sent money many people were dying from lack of food aid before this arrived
00:14:21.040 so there was also a famine during the siege of jerusalem 70 ce this was the most extreme
00:14:27.700 and described at length by josephus who was present after the jewish factions inside the city
00:14:33.440 burned each other's food stores and the romans that's really petty the factions inside the city
00:14:40.400 burned each other's food stores and that's that might have been a people that god wanted to punish
00:14:45.920 i think complete complete circumvention of the wall supplies were cut off people ate leather
00:14:52.280 hay grass and dung josephus reports that mothers ate their children the well-known story of mary of
00:14:58.800 besob besob corpses piled up in the houses and streets one deserter claimed over a hundred
00:15:06.900 thousand poor people's bodies were carried out through a simple gate between mid-april and july
00:15:12.860 the famine combined was diseased and infighting killed a large portion of the people trapped in
00:15:17.200 the city and keep in mind if 115,800 poor people's bodies were carried out how many total people
00:15:25.240 died which we'll get to in a second but note here is jesus's predictions were remarkably accurate
00:15:31.040 for all the stuff that happened around the time of the war which i will i will look but clearly
00:15:35.480 if he's saying like look this temple is about to be destroyed how is the temple destroyed right
00:15:40.620 like that's that's what they're asking yeah he's like um specifically uh you will hear wars and
00:15:45.860 rumors of wars so there's going to be wars and then such things must happen and then he said
00:15:51.200 a nation will rise against nation which rome did do against israel okay yeah you must be on your 0.77
00:15:58.660 guard you will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues on account of me
00:16:03.980 you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them so a few notable things here
00:16:09.400 why did he say that they would be flogged in synagogues and not churches if presumably we
00:16:14.480 were talking about some far future event we're talking about christians here right like presumably
00:16:19.040 christians are everywhere if that's what we're talking about so yeah and so it wouldn't be a
00:16:22.980 synagogue at what time were christians regularly flogged in synagogues i mean this would have been
00:16:31.360 during the early conversion wave right yeah presumably okay great so again we're we're
00:16:36.900 Oh, wait, are you saying that Jews were flogging Christian converts? 0.51
00:16:42.120 Jews would not have liked that. That's what I imagine would have happened to most early Christian converts.
00:16:47.200 Remember how the Jewish communities act during this period?
00:16:49.260 I don't know much about the history of how the Jewish community...
00:16:51.040 It's unlikely that it would have been historically recorded at great numbers because it wouldn't have been as gruesome as what the Romans did.
00:16:57.400 And most of the Christian church that we know of today grew up in Antioch and then Rome.
00:17:03.600 And so those recordings would have been much more voluminous.
00:17:08.380 But if you look at the ways that Jews dealt with somebody preaching another religion within their community, as most people would, as the Puritans did when Quakers preached within their communities, right?
00:17:20.520 Again, I'm not saying this is like a uniquely evil Jewish thing. 0.91
00:17:22.880 If somebody goes to your churches and they start preaching a different thing, especially in a historic context, flogging is the natural response. 0.94
00:17:29.840 But the question is, why are they being flogged within synagogues?
00:17:32.400 so it turns out we do have great historical records of exactly this happening again
00:17:37.580 the bible uh seems to record stuff really well i can just sort of bet if i read something i'm like
00:17:44.440 did that actually happen did the earthquakes happen did the plague happen the floggings also
00:17:48.980 happened uh specifically from 2 corinthians 11 12 uh five times i received from the jews 40 lashes
00:17:56.060 minus one, so 39 lashes. This was the standard Jewish punishment for people preaching like other 0.99
00:18:07.200 beliefs around Jewish temples. We also see the Jewish, this came, the 39 lashes came from 0.90
00:18:16.600 Deuteronomy 25, one through three, a maximum of 40 reduced in practice to avoid accidentally 0.78
00:18:22.780 exceeding it it was typically administered with multiple thonged leather whips um so just a
00:18:29.700 standard jewish punishment for people preaching other religions during this period that we know
00:18:35.040 was definitely practice right like why would this be considered a common thing he seems to be
00:18:42.200 describing very near future events here and the gospel must first be preached to all nations
00:18:47.880 And note here, this is talking about, for me, like where you need to go and preach the gospel within this context, not that first every nation on earth has to hear the gospel before this will happen.
00:19:01.600 to clarify this is also backed up by other places we see this word ethna uh nations or gentiles or
00:19:11.260 other ways that it's translated specifically you see it used um in luke 21 augustus census of all
00:19:19.760 of the world obviously doesn't mean all of the world it means all of the roman empire um or axe
00:19:25.080 uses it for famine throughout all of the world under claudius this is 11 28 again obviously not
00:19:30.520 all over the world, it means sort of all of their local regional groups. And if we're talking about
00:19:36.260 the period after Jesus's death, and we look at how fast Christianity spread to regions like
00:19:41.060 Egypt and Rome, which were quite far away, it makes sense that yes, there probably were preachers
00:19:47.500 in every one of these major locations by the time of the destruction of the temple,
00:19:52.240 even though it happened shortly after Jesus's death. Which again, is quite a bold and prophetic
00:19:58.900 claim for jesus to make given that he did say this would happen within a generation within 40 years
00:20:04.780 for him to believe that his teachings would spread that fast and they very well could not have
00:20:10.080 this would have been when we talk about deep literalism as a tradition what we mean is you
00:20:15.300 need to understand this the way that somebody of their world would have understood it so you can't
00:20:20.960 fudge a word like generations where they wouldn't have understood it as generations right um so
00:20:27.300 like you know how when i was reading genesis and i pointed out that the word that's translated today
00:20:32.540 actually means era in a lot of different places in the bible you can't pull that same trick with
00:20:38.300 the line generations here or the word that's translated as generations here uh specifically
00:20:44.800 the greek word genea in matthew he uses it a number of times and he doesn't want use it to
00:20:53.380 mean anything other than a literal generation. We've got to understand it the way that they
00:20:58.740 likely would. But if they're talking about something like an apocalypse happening, right,
00:21:03.500 or like big eschatological type events happening, this was often used in other parts of the Bible
00:21:10.580 to discuss transitions in governments, to discuss major wars, to discuss stuff like this. So we'll
00:21:16.280 go over where we don't allow a fudging that a lot of modern Christians do allow, which is the
00:21:20.400 in-your-lifetime fudging, and where we do think that you need to understand it in the way that
00:21:26.400 they would have, which is allegorical, right? Because we do know that Jews of this period, 0.55
00:21:31.240 when they were writing about real-world events, did often talk about apocalypses to mean massive 0.97
00:21:36.260 changes in the way people live and the way governments work, okay? Whenever you are arrested
00:21:43.080 and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given
00:21:48.640 to you at the time for it is not you speaking but the holy spirit yeah now no that's my kind
00:21:55.580 of prep i like that this right here is is like if i'm reading this particular thing what i would
00:22:02.680 take from this is he's saying okay you need to spread the word right like you need to spread
00:22:07.940 this new inspiration of judaism and uh you're you're gonna have a lot of you are gonna be
00:22:14.720 executed basically which did happen right like that's that's what's being laid out here okay
00:22:19.800 yeah they're heading into that early martyr period it wasn't pretty early moderate period yeah and
00:22:24.200 then he goes into this in more detail brother will betray brother to death and father his child
00:22:28.780 children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death everyone will hate you
00:22:33.620 because of me but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved now this i find very interesting
00:22:39.120 because if you look in a modern christian context especially if you're looking at like a literal
00:22:44.040 end times right i i think the moment the rapture happened a lot of people would just immediately
00:22:50.280 convert to christianity if it happened because we're all primed to expect something like that
00:22:54.360 and you'd be like presumably it would be too late right well yes but you wouldn't be killing each
00:22:59.820 other over this and even so if we're talking 100 yeah yeah um you it also doesn't make sense like
00:23:07.340 it would be like a big unifying thing it would be like oh the christians were right yeah it's like
00:23:12.400 when you die in south park when you die and get to heaven okay so right for those of you who were
00:23:17.220 a little confused uh you are dead and this is hell i shouldn't be here i was a totally strict
00:23:23.440 and devout protestant i thought we went to heaven yes well i'm afraid you were wrong i was a 0.85
00:23:28.440 practicing jehovah's witness you picked the wrong religion as well i'm afraid it was the mormons
00:23:33.840 yes the mormons were the correct answer right like yeah you know certainly families would not
00:23:38.740 be turning on each other they would more the ones who were left behind would be presumably trying to
00:23:44.300 bandy together to defend themselves from now the massive looting and everything else that's taking
00:23:50.300 place because nothing really works anymore because that i mean there's going to be two groups there's
00:23:54.040 going to be one group that becomes very nihilistic about this and then there's going to be another and
00:23:57.080 i would yes i mean i have low belief in humanity but i think if it was just shown to you that there
00:24:04.540 is a path and most christians believe you know after the millennium even if you believe this
00:24:09.080 you know what if you i mean it depends if you're a pre- or post-millennialist but a lot of them
00:24:14.300 believe that these people are going to go through a millennium of torment or something like this and
00:24:17.700 and really harsh trials but they could still you know get into heaven they can still prove
00:24:22.040 themselves right even even after this so it's not necessarily too late for them um but the point 0.57
00:24:26.380 being is that you know i would have the fire lit under my butt around being a good guy if i knew
00:24:32.300 factually what the stakes were without any doubt i mean now i believe if you don't get raptured
00:24:38.280 aren't you kind of so no i just told you you have the millennium of trials right like this is a
00:24:44.740 entire point of all of this yeah i'm not clear on the rapture i'm just kind of like
00:24:49.140 cross that bridge we don't believe in that anyway but even the people who do believe in it believe
00:24:54.340 that yes you're in for a very bad time but you're not sol okay okay so the point being is for a lot
00:25:03.720 of people i would think the majority you're not going to have people turning on each other in
00:25:06.060 this way and the other thing to note here is okay suppose we're talking about like a christian
00:25:10.040 society at this point and the rapture happens and this is written specifically for christian
00:25:15.640 communities of all of the communities on earth that are going to immediately stop killing each
00:25:21.020 start killing each other the least it is the extremely christian ones okay this is assuming
00:25:27.440 the christians aren't taken up in the rapture um you know if you're in a devout church and the the
00:25:33.660 rapture hasn't happened but the the millennial process has happened and it's very clear that
00:25:37.200 there's like an antichrist and there's all this you know evil all this stuff happening that's
00:25:40.780 been predicted uh those are the communities where you wouldn't expect brothers to turn on you and
00:25:44.800 children to turn on you and everything like that but but suppose he's not talking about that period
00:25:48.400 Suppose he's talking about like the next 40 years after he dies.
00:25:53.720 Now this makes perfect sense because this would be talking about the first generation 0.95
00:25:58.360 of Christian converts.
00:25:59.820 In the first generation of Christian converts, whether you're coming from a Jewish community
00:26:04.280 or a pagan community, it would have been very common for fathers to turn on children, children 0.74
00:26:09.780 to turn on fathers, brothers to betray each other, and people to be put to death, as well
00:26:15.380 as the concept of everyone hating you.
00:26:17.220 and note it was for this early generation of christian that i think the lines of the bible
00:26:22.120 about coming to christ before your family but i think that that's what it was written for
00:26:26.840 in a mostly christian world like we live in today yeah you can talk about like society out there
00:26:32.060 hating the christians and everything but if you contrast the hatred that you experience
00:26:36.680 today as a christian as bad as it is in the secularized world and everything like that
00:26:41.100 it is trivial compared to what the christians in the 40 years after jesus's death went to 0.72
00:26:46.580 through especially if you expand it further it was even worse for christians in the first like
00:26:50.960 300 years or so okay just really really bad okay um and and they would have faded you because of
00:26:58.700 him so again perfect description here of what's going to happen okay so then he says when you see
00:27:03.920 the abomination that causes desolation standing where it does not belong let the reader understand
00:27:09.460 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down 0.57
00:27:16.760 and enter the house or take anything with it. Note, this quote right here actually really dates
00:27:22.740 when the prophecy is supposed to be about because Jews during this period in this region actually
00:27:29.100 did sleep on the roofs of their houses. Specifically, in the first century of Judea,
00:27:35.200 in Galilee and Jerusalem, it was common, especially in warmer months, to sleep on the
00:27:38.920 roof of your houses typically houses had flat roofs made of wooden beams branches or reeds
00:27:44.200 and a packed layer of mud or clay these roofs were reached by an exterior staircase or ladder
00:27:50.080 from the courtyard or street deuteronomy 22 8 required a low parapet around the roof precisely
00:27:55.660 because people used it could fall off roof served as an extra living space people dried figs flax
00:28:01.520 and grain up there and in the evening prayed as peter does in axe 10 and slept there in the summer
00:28:07.240 because it was cooler and caught a breeze.
00:28:10.680 We see this reflected in a number of things from the time period.
00:28:14.180 For example, Samuel and Saul conversed on a roof.
00:28:17.040 Saul appears to have spent the night there, 1 Samuel 9.
00:28:20.900 The point here being is that people today don't sleep on roofs,
00:28:25.080 and I see no reason to believe that a lot of people in the future
00:28:27.980 are going to sleep on roofs.
00:28:29.640 But if the prophecy was about something that was going to happen
00:28:32.060 in the next 40 years,
00:28:33.620 talking about people sleeping on roofs makes a lot of sense.
00:28:37.240 let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be those days for
00:28:43.380 pregnant women and nursing mothers. Pray that this will not take place in the winter because
00:28:48.420 those days of distress unequaled from the beginning when God created the world until now
00:28:54.300 and never will be equaled again. So note what he's talking about here. What is he talking about?
00:29:00.220 he is giving people a practical warning for their own lifetime the romans are going to come
00:29:07.980 when the romans came we have various numbers of how many people were killed i think the josephus 0.72
00:29:12.800 number is a million jews were killed in this region um it was an absolute massacre and yeah
00:29:19.580 he's saying you do not have time to get things you are leaving immediately if you want a shot
00:29:23.980 you don't get your cloak it's going to be hard for nursing mothers i mean if you heard about like
00:29:29.100 the nursing mothers in the holocaust and stuff like this you are familiar with the horrors of
00:29:33.420 something like this and if we're talking about a civilizational destruction scale here um we are
00:29:39.120 looking at something that for the jewish people i think on a per person basis uh for the jewish
00:29:45.060 community was worse than the holocaust um i had to look that up in post but like you can actually
00:29:50.840 write here so i decided to look this up um and it depends on the numbers you're looking at if you go 0.88
00:29:57.980 with josephus's number of how many people were killed and i love that ai will always be like
00:30:02.660 well josephus was probably exaggerating but if you said that for holocaust numbers everyone would
00:30:07.420 absolutely shit a brick but okay so i i'm gonna go with josephus's numbers here because he's the
00:30:14.880 best historical account we have of this period and his number was 1.1 million people now we go 0.84
00:30:19.800 for lower levels of the population of jews of this period um keep in mind if we go for the higher
00:30:25.960 Holocaust number, the sixth number, I think it's 6.6, that would be about 36% of the world's total
00:30:33.680 Jewish population, or about a third. If we go for the higher, the lower numbers of Jews during this
00:30:39.620 period, that would be 2.5, and Josephus' number, that would put this at 44% of the world's Jewish
00:30:45.300 population. However, if we go with numbers from Jewish historians like Della Pergola, who's an
00:30:54.340 Israeli historian and demographer, he argues that there was around 5 million Jews during this
00:31:00.640 period. So if we go with his number, that would put this at 22% of the global Jewish population.
00:31:07.300 And note here, you can say the Josephus number sees high. If we go with even just numbers of
00:31:12.600 the guy who's not Josephus, when he's talking about just poor people who died of starvation
00:31:17.820 during the siege, he's saying it was over a hundred thousand. So I don't know if that number
00:31:24.260 seems high to me. And depictions of things like mothers eating their own babies, I just don't
00:31:29.320 know if that seems high to me. I think what I'd say here is maybe a bit lower, but I'd say if
00:31:38.100 we're talking about like in terms of the impact on Jewish history, if you combine both the number
00:31:44.500 of people who died with the fact that the temple was permanently destroyed after this this would
00:31:50.500 have been a bigger part of their cultural identity especially given what the destruction of the
00:31:58.420 temple meant that jews had to change about their religious observance and structure and if you're
00:32:04.940 going to say well josephus was probably exaggerating and it's different from if you're talking about
00:32:09.520 more modern events this is a common thing that historians it just constantly happens if you're
00:32:14.400 fan of watching the field of history is they'll say these numbers couldn't possibly be true this
00:32:19.100 is way too many people this is way too and then a few years later they're doing some archaeology
00:32:23.680 it's like oh the original numbers that were reported was accurate it was actually that bad
00:32:27.760 it was actually that big so i've developed a habit of just trusting ancient historians when
00:32:34.260 their numbers are not completely implausible like this is really really really bad right like and
00:32:39.860 this is really good practical advice for their lives. And so then he goes on. If the Lord had
00:32:45.700 not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect whom he has chosen,
00:32:51.680 he has not shortened them. And at that time, if anyone says to you, look, here is the Messiah,
00:32:56.740 or look, here he is, do not believe it. False messiahs and false prophets will appear and
00:33:01.500 perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. So be on your guard. I have told
00:33:06.300 you everything ahead of time. So why is he saying this? Well, what we happen to know is there
00:33:10.720 actually was a huge crop of messianic figures that appeared during the time of the destruction
00:33:17.300 of the second temple, because of course there was. Your Judaism is undergoing a massive revolution 0.89
00:33:24.080 during that time, a massive transformation in how it's practiced, what it meant to be Jewish,
00:33:29.200 et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And so a bunch of people claim to be the Messiah,
00:33:32.740 and they were of course the false messiah this is he's like look guys one messiah came and told you
00:33:39.300 this was going to happen before it happened everyone else is coming and telling you what's
00:33:43.480 going to happen after it happened who do you believe right he's basically laying it out here
00:33:48.900 a note here this isn't just me or christian scholars saying this josephus also wrote about
00:33:56.060 these figures he's a famous jewish historian for example during the revolt itself we know of at
00:34:01.820 least three famous ones who gained a lot of attention and him simon bar gear and an unnamed
00:34:09.420 sign of prophets who led people into the wilderness or even the temple itself claiming god would
00:34:14.340 perform miracles to save them okay so that would have been a number of figures so well i guess
00:34:19.740 because there's multiple in the unnamed sign prophets that means there was at least four
00:34:24.940 during the revolt itself. And then there was another major wave from 115 CE to 117 CE.
00:34:35.120 This was during the Kitos War diaspora revolt. And then there was another wave, 132 to 135 CE,
00:34:43.700 Simon Bar Kaba, or Bar Kishva. And Rabbi Akiv declared him the Messiah, applying the verse,
00:34:52.000 a star shall come of jacob so yeah this this did happen even if we're just talking about the revolt
00:34:58.220 itself that there are a number of people claiming to be the messiah jesus got this claim exactly
00:35:02.760 accurate historically and i'll note another thing here a lot of people will say well mark was written
00:35:08.300 after these events and because mark was written after these events he could have worked it into
00:35:13.800 these events um the problem is is textually mark just doesn't look like it was written after these
00:35:21.260 events uh there's a number of things that make it really weird for for example if it had been
00:35:26.520 written after these events why doesn't he record any of the rumors that jesus had talked to people
00:35:33.280 after his death right why why that seems like an important thing that a lot of early christians
00:35:38.520 believe now you could argue that maybe jesus just didn't and that wasn't actually widely believed in
00:35:44.200 a lot of these early communities um which is a take that i wouldn't say is anti-techno puritan
00:35:49.260 or pro-techno-puritan it's just one plausibility i will throw out there uh and that god had people
00:35:54.900 have hallucinations which then were recorded in text which were important for later christians
00:35:58.840 okay you can go that way um but the other thing is is mark is if you're gonna make like that good
00:36:07.420 of a prophecy here you could have gone a lot more specific with the prophecy and you actually have
00:36:13.220 other books in the bible do that which again i presume was them actually just being like okay
00:36:19.120 we know exactly though because one book is like oh and they'll do three encirclements and the
00:36:23.020 encirclements will work in this way and it sounds a lot like somebody just reading back what they
00:36:28.400 remembered from recent history mark doesn't seem like that what is hilarious is people find these
00:36:35.220 predictions in mark to be so accurate of what happened within jesus's life after forgetting that
00:36:40.280 these predictions were that accurate and then applying them to future events
00:36:44.500 that they are the primary thing used to date Mark. Specifically, people are like, well,
00:36:50.800 this is just too accurate a prediction of the temple's destruction. Therefore, Mark must have
00:36:55.460 been writing after the temple's destruction. That and a few authors who claim that Mark
00:37:00.380 was like a scribe writing what Peter was saying, but these come hundredth of years later and are
00:37:06.040 fairly unreliable. I actually think that Mark describes Jesus and all his followers as Torah
00:37:13.100 observing jews um with a few latinisms mean he might have been a recent immigrant um who might
00:37:21.120 have even observed the events himself um that said or or known somebody who observed the events
00:37:28.200 himself especially given where the story cuts off um if we're talking about uh later christians
00:37:35.600 who then like luke who did seem to add what actually happened into his predictions you have
00:37:42.100 things like luke 1943 for the days will come upon you and your enemies will set up a barricade
00:37:46.540 around you surround you in every side and tear down your ground and your children was in you
00:37:51.720 and they will not leave one stone upon another in you because you did not know the time of your
00:37:56.260 visitation and or luke 21 but when you see jerusalem surrounded by armies then they know
00:38:02.380 a desolation has come near and they go into it and they go into some siegecraft related stuff
00:38:06.320 the point being is what mark is doing doesn't look like somebody doing this in fact if anything
00:38:11.660 the predictions look a lot more like earlier periods when jerusalem had been destroyed or
00:38:18.180 sort of pointing back to earlier parts of the bible which you would only do if you were making
00:38:23.100 a prediction rather than describing an actual event you had already experienced mark actually
00:38:29.420 seems like a prediction and it's an important prediction because it goes along with everything
00:38:33.020 else we know from what jesus said from the fact that you know he was actually executed in this
00:38:36.520 time period. Like we know enough about him to get a vague idea of what his gist was. And this seems
00:38:42.820 to align with the rest of his gist because Jesus's entire teaching platform, philosophy, and system 0.59
00:38:49.540 doesn't really work for a Judaism that still has a temple. Right. As we point out in an earlier 0.97
00:38:55.000 tract, he's basically describing how Jews can work without the temple. Okay. So to continue, 0.95
00:39:03.500 He says, but in those days following that distress, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give us light and the stars will fall from the skies and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
00:39:12.700 Now, note here, this is an apocalyptic prophecy.
00:39:15.340 It doesn't need to be literal.
00:39:17.480 This is a way in this period.
00:39:19.280 This is what, again, I mean by deep literalism.
00:39:21.340 A person of this time would have understood that this is talking about a change in the world order, right?
00:39:27.640 Kind of like if now it'd be like your mind will be blown.
00:39:30.080 And in the future, people are like, they literally thought their heads would explode.
00:39:34.520 Exactly.
00:39:34.780 That's exactly what it would be.
00:39:36.360 People would be like, no, that's not what that means.
00:39:39.120 Come on.
00:39:39.280 He was wrong.
00:39:41.020 Okay.
00:39:41.880 We have examples from recent Jewish history where people wrote about things in this way.
00:39:46.200 Like, why are you saying his head's going to explode? 0.86
00:39:48.120 Okay, next.
00:39:49.280 And then he goes on to say, and at that time, people, so he's talking about what's going
00:39:55.840 to happen at this time.
00:39:56.700 What's going to happen at this time of transition that he's talking about?
00:39:59.320 like what's going to usher it in. He says, and at that time, people will see the son of man
00:40:04.200 coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect
00:40:10.520 from the winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heaven. So again, what does Jesus
00:40:17.380 call himself throughout all of the Bibles? He calls himself the son of man. Okay. This is a
00:40:23.920 very common epithet that Jesus uses to describe himself. So he's dating these events. When are
00:40:30.460 these events going to happen? They are going to happen around or shortly after when the Son of
00:40:37.100 Man goes into heaven, okay? And what is the Son of Man going to do when he's in heaven? Like what
00:40:43.160 is he, or dies basically, what is he going to do? He is going to gather up all of the people into
00:40:50.200 this new uh basically religious system right if you if you believe what the techno puritans believe
00:40:55.320 about christianity so he's just laying out here what literally happens after his death
00:41:00.760 now to continue here now learn this lesson from the fig trees as soon as its twigs are tender and
00:41:08.220 its leaves come out you know that the summer is near even so when you see these things happening
00:41:13.520 you know that it is near right at the door truly i tell you that this generation will not come to
00:41:19.800 pass until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words
00:41:25.140 will never pass away. So that's the context of that line. Now, everything you just heard
00:41:31.560 appears to me to be clearly, and in no uncertain terms, be talking about real events that are
00:41:39.680 going to happen to the generation that exists during Jesus's time. And it gets more interesting
00:41:47.460 than that the way that that jews counted generations during this period was 40 years 0.76
00:41:52.960 and that's exactly the time between jesus's dying and the destruction of the temple oh and then the
00:41:58.680 other really here it was it was like 40 a.d or c we'll get into we'll get into it i'll have to
00:42:06.720 add that in post to get like the exact details sure so yes the temple was destroyed 40 years
00:42:11.980 after Jesus died. And the typical understanding was a generation was 40 years was in that period
00:42:18.340 of Jewish history. Specifically, the wilderness generation is consumed in 40 years. Numbers 32, 0.89
00:42:24.700 13, 40 years long. I grieved with this generations. Psalm 95, 10, uh, Deuteronomy 2, 14 puts the dying 0.82
00:42:35.260 of Kadesh at 38 years. You have some like Job 4216 that put it at slightly shorter. This would
00:42:43.000 be 140 years. Four generations would put a generation at 35 years, but it still puts the
00:42:47.880 number really close to on the dot with this. Okay. And then here, the heaven and earth will
00:42:54.700 pass away, but my words will never pass away. Now, a lot of Christians take this to mean that heaven
00:43:00.420 is going to be erased and earth is going to be erased. And there are some other places in the
00:43:04.740 bible that argue that um but i'd argue if you take this in context it sounds more like he's saying
00:43:11.080 for you heaven and earth will pass away but my words which we know don't pass away like it could
00:43:18.600 have been christianity could have been some little cult some little thing that didn't end up mattering
00:43:22.640 right but that isn't what happened it was his words that mark the transformation of judaism
00:43:30.780 into something that becomes the global religion,
00:43:33.940 which will likely define the future of the human race,
00:43:36.440 especially if it's the one that colonizes the stars.
00:43:39.540 And so that works in that context.
00:43:43.020 Now to continue here with this next part,
00:43:45.100 he says, but about the day or the hour, no one knows,
00:43:48.720 not even the angels in heaven, nor the sun,
00:43:51.580 but only the father.
00:43:52.860 Be on guard, be alert.
00:43:54.720 You do not know what time it will come.
00:43:56.500 It's like a man going away.
00:43:57.840 He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge.
00:44:00.000 each with their assigned tasks, and tells one at the door to keep watch. Therefore, keep watch.
00:44:05.340 You do not know the owner of the house will come back, whether in the evening or at midnight or
00:44:10.440 when the rooster crows or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you see anything.
00:44:16.000 What I will say to you, I say to everyone, watch! Now, if he's giving these people a real warning
00:44:22.820 about their actual lives that is existentially important for them okay this is the equivalent of
00:44:30.920 if the messiah came before the holocaust being like bros i gotta tell you this like watch
00:44:36.960 exclamation mark here be prepared to run out of your house run for the hills you don't take your 0.55
00:44:43.680 cloak you don't take anything else you just run the moment this starts you just run oh my god
00:44:51.120 this is so existentially important for you that's what he was saying there this word is
00:44:58.740 not confusing this word is not outside of context i think anyone with a lay reading
00:45:03.140 and i want to be clear here just how much sense this makes jesus here is not talking about grand
00:45:12.240 apocalypses he could be talking about fiery chariots coming down from the heavens and blah
00:45:18.560 blah blah blah blah but he didn't and he isn't because if he said that he'd just be like well
00:45:23.100 you're screwed just curl up in a ball because there isn't much you can do what he says is
00:45:28.940 there's going to be nations versus nations and you need to run for the hills now in a modern war that 0.92
00:45:36.420 might not be the most useful thing to do when you have automated drone swarms and stuff like this
00:45:41.120 But during the sack of Judea, it was absolutely the best possible advice anyone could have been armed with.
00:45:50.400 And it's very sensible, practical, removes all of the crazy revelation nonsense.
00:45:57.620 It's your nation's going to be attacked.
00:45:59.760 You'll hear some rumors about war first.
00:46:01.820 Then you're going to see wars.
00:46:03.580 Run for the hills.
00:46:05.240 I mean, sorry, even you hearing this in context, right?
00:46:08.140 When you put it in context, it seems pretty obvious, yes.
00:46:12.440 But then why would so many people take it out of context,
00:46:14.960 including C.S. Lewis, of all people, you know?
00:46:19.000 C.S. Lewis was a bit of a tard, 1.00
00:46:21.140 and I've always said I will probably do an episode on this. 1.00
00:46:23.700 His arguments for Christianity are so bad,
00:46:28.600 they are deeply embarrassing. 0.93
00:46:30.100 I think, like, his intellectual rigor is deeply embarrassing. 0.99
00:46:33.700 Then why is he this icon of Christian wholesomeness? 0.96
00:46:36.460 no, he's an icon of Catholics. I got this one super wrong here because it's always for whatever 0.64
00:46:42.000 Catholics who bring up C.S. Lewis to me. And I was confusing him with Tolkien and I didn't have 0.88
00:46:46.980 enough time to fully edit this tract, which was very frustrating because it was already out 30
00:46:51.440 minutes late. And so I'm having to add this in post and I just really messed this one up. I,
00:46:56.320 as you can tell with all my other additions, I was focused on not getting the history or the
00:46:59.720 Bible quotes wrong, uh, because that's where I assumed I would make a mistake. Not on like a
00:47:04.360 common i'm so angry at myself and i want to be clear that his type of argument i think is very
00:47:11.800 appealing to catholics because it's very flowery and very um like oh it's it's all so beautiful
00:47:18.480 oh look at the poetry in this oh look at the but it's not rigorous if you are confused about what 0.96
00:47:25.280 i mean by his arguments for god being uniquely stupid i'll give you an example of one it's his 0.93
00:47:29.940 argument from desire. Basically it's that, well, because some people feel hunger, that means that 0.97
00:47:36.600 the thing exists, right? Like they want something, therefore it must exist. Some people have a desire
00:47:41.400 for why, therefore it must exist. Some people have a desire for God or a large population does,
00:47:47.560 therefore God must exist. And I'm like, okay, so therefore furries must exist, right? Because a
00:47:52.120 large number of people have a desire for furries, right? And you could say, well, popular media
00:47:56.100 prime them to have that well popular media prime them around god right like no just because people
00:48:00.500 desire something doesn't mean it exists somewhere that's a com it's it's it's a it's an argument
00:48:06.880 that's so bad it genuinely shocks me that anyone could consider somebody who thought this was their
00:48:13.280 best argument for god a serious intellectual or like oh people have a desire for like lust and
00:48:21.220 sex exists and that's proof of sex existing what's so crazy about this argument is it's like so
00:48:26.820 trans it's like well i really want to be a man therefore i must actually be a man like gender
00:48:33.140 transition must be real because i can feel that i want it so note here i decided to look up because
00:48:40.260 i want to be like what would css lewis arguments against the furry thing be it's like well it's not
00:48:44.820 a universal appetite it's not present in all cultures to which i would say um well neither
00:48:50.260 is monotheism but people dressing up like animals at some point during a cultural ritual is present
00:48:57.060 in a higher percentage of cultures than monotheism and a higher percentage of historic cultures you
00:49:02.740 know going back to ancient egypt uh so it's more of a natural desire present across cultures than
00:49:08.820 the desire for a monotheistic god is i'd also go further here and note that even i don't have a
00:49:15.380 deep desire for a god to exist i've never felt anything like this and this is what i talk about
00:49:20.900 where i talk about sort of arguments based around feelings and what would be beautiful and what
00:49:27.860 would be pretty if it was true that don't really survive the first encounter with somebody who
00:49:34.100 applies logic and criticality to thinking um and so uh people can unironically take somebody who
00:49:40.020 has something as silly as the argument from desire very seriously like if i want something therefore
00:49:45.140 where it must exist and where a lot of people want something um where there's no real logic
00:49:50.060 behind it uh but it feels good it's like oh well you feel this way okay um oh
00:49:58.240 oh it literally won if this episode comes out tomorrow well now we have to erase and we have
00:50:05.540 to go back to zero oh boy once again every time we record an episode here we go malcolm
00:50:15.940 see how far we can get next time huh but it's true it's that i don't i don't know like of the
00:50:24.920 protestant intellectuals who i follow i don't know many who like are really big into c.s lewis
00:50:29.900 because his his type of works if you take it to somebody who doesn't think like a catholic thinks
00:50:35.400 they just immediately on their face you're like this is not a good argument this is an argument
00:50:41.280 that like assume it's like a vibes based argument like they're very vibes based they're not very
00:50:45.780 like rigorous and i might do a separate episode all on c.s lewis that our audience is gonna hate
00:50:51.060 because i know a lot of people i don't know well i'm sure we can make it kind of timely because
00:50:54.400 the the most recent freak out is that they're having a woman voice the lion in the next narnia
00:51:01.020 movie oh my god i think it's like it's a great woman with a deep voice i think it's like it's
00:51:05.220 hella mirrored or someone great like fantastic you know but anyway everyone's um having a moment
00:51:10.780 with that yeah so the lion is jesus right one of the reasons why a lot of people read this as
00:51:16.340 uniquely apocalyptic is i just went over it from mark if you go over it in matthew it still all
00:51:22.140 makes sense but they do a bunch of callbacks to daniel right to try to recouch this in an
00:51:29.500 apocalyptic context oh they're they're trying because they were trying to mold it into something
00:51:35.260 that they thought would make it more accurate or like make it apply to their time however many
00:51:40.600 years later how many how many approximate years after jesus death was that written um i don't
00:51:47.560 remember off the toe again and and also it's vague like a lot of people say that mark was only maybe
00:51:52.180 10 years before matthew i actually think mark was probably significantly longer before matthew
00:51:56.520 given some of the stuff that mark doesn't mention um which you would assume so maybe it was written
00:52:02.460 10 years before but there was a much longer period before that mark for people who aren't aware
00:52:08.220 there's been some translations that tried to fix this but it basically ends mid-sentence like
00:52:14.520 the person who was writing it sort of croaked or something um it ends with the women fleeing
00:52:20.640 jesus's tomb in horror um that's great i love that and it's a great end honestly yeah so good
00:52:28.680 that's really good oh no that's perfect ending but we'll go just like look what matthew quotes
00:52:34.800 from dan daniel because i also don't think it's particularly problematic and if anything it
00:52:40.000 further reinforces all of this okay okay so now we're gonna go to daniel here okay i beheld till
00:52:47.040 the thrones were cast down and the ancient of days did sit whose garment was white as snow and
00:52:52.500 whose hair of his head was pure of wool his throne was like the fiery flame and the wheel as burning
00:52:58.520 flame now first i need to note here while this is the king james version this is a mistranslation
00:53:03.400 almost every other modern version notices a mistranslation it does not say i beheld till
00:53:09.160 the thrones were cast down it says i beheld until the thrones were reordered um okay so again we
00:53:17.020 need to try to think through okay if we're talking in prophetic language here we need to start
00:53:23.080 thinking what how do you interpret prophecy what's the most literal easy understanding of this okay
00:53:28.680 okay so this it sounds like what it's talking about here is um there's an ancient tradition
00:53:35.400 that was uniquely pure you know it talks about white as snow and stuff like that um and uh it
00:53:42.100 has a fiery throne to like an ancient and venerated tradition right okay which one is it like it's
00:53:47.920 talking about judaism here right obviously right okay and then what what does it talk about it's
00:53:52.360 talking about um that he beheld the uh organizational sort of governmental structure
00:53:59.480 of judaism being restructured and note here that we and i think any honest understanding of the
00:54:04.400 bible would have it christian bible would have it be as a continuation of judaism um just a a rapid
00:54:10.780 or dramatic change in how judaism worked a non-temple version of judaism that applies to
00:54:16.240 all people which good right um i've always found very i i say this all the time but i've always
00:54:22.940 the like no hide um so like jews are always like oh you gotta follow the no hide rules and then
00:54:30.000 when everybody falls in no hide rules then the messianic period can happen and i'm like well i
00:54:33.980 mean almost everyone does follow them because almost everyone's a christian and christians
00:54:39.020 follow all the no hide rules i mean almost everyone who you know you what you would want 0.65
00:54:43.380 like i see jews preaching this to i'm like that's really silly and if it turns out that jesus was 0.52
00:54:49.000 the jewish messiah is it an interesting that now almost everyone follows what you consider to be 0.50
00:54:53.940 the important rules because of him interesting um so anyway we'll go over so that's what's being
00:55:04.900 talked about here and then we'll continue a uh fiery but the point i'm making is this first line
00:55:10.220 seems to check out judaism is reorganized and ancient tradition is reorganized with a different
00:55:14.320 sort of governmental and ruling structure after this period and it certainly was i mean the
00:55:18.880 sadducees lost all their power frankly and basically are an extinct group now and they
00:55:22.740 were the ones who held control of the temple um a fiery stream issued and came forth before him
00:55:29.220 thousands, thousands ministered unto him and men at him and 10,000 times 10,000 stood before him.
00:55:37.720 The judgment was set and the books were open. Okay. So again, if this is talking about Jesus
00:55:43.600 right here, if it's talking about him, right, it's saying that his words end up ministering
00:55:48.740 to thousands of thousands of people, but not necessarily it says they stood before him,
00:55:53.320 but then it talks about the books being open, right? That he's ministering to them through
00:55:58.240 books that's the the best way i can get this and again perfect prediction okay continue i beheld
00:56:03.800 then that because the voice of the great words which the horn spoke i beheld even till the beast
00:56:09.600 was slain and his body destroyed and given to the burning flame um this one's a little harder to
00:56:17.020 understand uh you could it's being talked about here it could be the temple uh that's being talked
00:56:25.480 about here. It could be the Jewish tradition undergoing reform. You know, there's the parable
00:56:33.380 that Jesus tells about the wedding guests, and then one group not wanting to come to the wedding, 0.66
00:56:39.660 the original ones who got the invitation, clearly the Jews, and then the king goes out and kills 0.84
00:56:44.320 their people. Well, also they murdered the servants who went to them. So, you know, it was 0.98
00:56:49.600 just. And again, this lines up with Jesus's life. If in the parable of Jesus is saying,
00:56:55.280 God's going to send servants, the king sends servants, two people saying, come to my daughter's
00:57:00.240 wedding. He's obviously allegorical for the servant in this. They kill him. And then immediately,
00:57:04.980 a great number of them are killed. That again, lines up with being very prophetic for this time
00:57:09.360 period um as concerning the rest of the beasts that had their dominion taken away yet their
00:57:19.580 lives were prolonged for a season and a time um what could this be talking about uh i would read
00:57:27.800 this um okay the beasts we often talk about pre-adamites i think this might be talking about
00:57:33.560 the pre-Adamites during this period these are the human nations that act beastly and what he might
00:57:40.020 be saying here is that if you talk about humans during this time period and there were a lot of 0.96
00:57:45.180 pre-Adamite people during this time period like just truly evil civilizations that would you know
00:57:50.320 torture babies for no reason blah blah blah blah blah at scale see our aztecs video but you know
00:57:55.380 this was also you know not uncommon in lots of regions during this period he's saying that the
00:58:00.080 beasts uh that their dominion hasn't been taken away yet basically these these really evil
00:58:05.760 civilizations haven't haven't ended yet but but the the sort of the chapter on them uh their and
00:58:12.240 their lives are prolonged like they're still around in the world um but uh the book on them
00:58:17.900 is basically over at this point right um that these civilizations are going to fall apart eventually
00:58:22.520 uh then if you continue here i saw visions and behold one of the son of man came with the clouds
00:58:28.600 of heaven and came to the ancient of days and they brought him near before him and there was
00:58:34.540 given him dominion and glory and kingdom that all people nations and languages should serve him his
00:58:41.340 dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away and his kingdom that which shall
00:58:47.140 not be destroyed and so no if you take a techno puritan framing of who jesus was this all makes
00:58:52.680 perfect sense right his kingdom is not going to be destroyed his kingdom is the one that is being
00:58:56.700 built through his followers and his people and then uh daniel 7 interprets itself three times
00:59:04.580 um and each time the figure is the people but the saints most high shall take the kingdom and
00:59:10.560 possess the kingdom forever and ever i beheld the same horn made the war with the saints and
00:59:16.340 prevailed against them until the ancient days came and judgment was given to the saints of the most
00:59:21.380 tie and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom okay so if this is the horn that's
00:59:27.620 being talked about here it's talking about what sounds like a transition right um a a theological
00:59:35.380 transition because it's talking about the transition of the saints right um and and what are saints in
00:59:41.200 this context is there a so i ask like what the hubert original translation could have been
00:59:47.340 interpreted as because obviously like the concept of a catholic saint is very different from what
00:59:51.120 they're describing deer. Yeah, why don't you look up what is transcribed as saints in Hebrew? What
00:59:55.680 are other uses of it in Daniel, specifically asking Daniel? Yeah. And he shall speak great
01:00:02.720 words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the high, and to change the times
01:00:08.200 and the laws, and they shall be given to his hand unto a time, and at times, and the dividing of
01:00:13.900 time, but the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion to consume and destroy it
01:00:18.760 until the end and the king and dominion and the greatness of his kingdom under the whole of heaven
01:00:23.060 shall be given to the people and the saints of the most high whose kingdom was an everlasting
01:00:27.400 kingdom and all domains shall serve and obey him again this all aligns was like the direction that
01:00:34.020 things appear to be going um and note here a lot of uh people are like oh this section in
01:00:41.440 the hebrew testament was about a different kingdom that was being destroyed and it's like it doesn't
01:00:46.840 matter it can be used multiple times even jews do that they'll use one description for multiple
01:00:51.740 prophecies here what they're saying is something like this will happen again and something like
01:00:56.760 this did literally happen again very shortly after jesus's life what does it say simone
01:01:03.420 it's it's biblical aramaic by the way i shouldn't be saying hebrew i i don't know because i don't
01:01:08.480 know these things um it's the it's the most holy ones or uh sort of the the theological leaders
01:01:16.100 so instead of like but the saints of the most high shall receive the kingdom it would it could
01:01:21.340 be translated as but the holy ones of the most high like the holy ones that which is set aside
01:01:27.180 for god sort of so yeah saints now i understand what it is just sort of like i guess the the
01:01:32.560 people who are so okay why it's so edifying that the real translation and the original translation
01:01:39.540 says that the sun will not see this coming um and this is important not just for techno puritan
01:01:46.040 but even traditional Christian interpretations
01:01:47.960 of Christianity. 0.90
01:01:49.920 Even a traditional Christian, 0.92
01:01:52.080 if what Jesus is talking about 0.75
01:01:53.940 is his own death and the destruction of the temple,
01:01:57.660 he wouldn't have seen that coming.
01:02:00.660 And this doesn't work
01:02:02.360 if you assume it's talking about a future time.
01:02:04.260 And this is why it was so embarrassing
01:02:06.180 that they tried to erase it.
01:02:07.580 If you assume that what's being written about here
01:02:09.960 is a future apocalypse
01:02:11.560 after the temple has been rebuilt,
01:02:13.340 okay then jesus has already died he's already in heaven this is if you're a traditional christian
01:02:19.060 and presumably he knows what's going to happen in the future otherwise he's significantly less
01:02:24.620 omnipotent than god right and most christians don't want to believe that but now take the other
01:02:30.680 probability in the bible we know multiple places where jesus is clearly unaware of things that god
01:02:38.120 is aware of like there's a point when like somebody touches his cloak and he doesn't know
01:02:41.600 who touched his cloak there's a part where um he well you know why have you forsaken me is obviously
01:02:48.300 one big one that we often harp on um but there's a there's a lot of parts like that now he does
01:02:52.780 seem to be able to like get sort of downloads from god uh where god can give him some future
01:02:58.300 site uh specifically around the events of his death but this hasn't happened yet at this point
01:03:03.460 in the bible so at least if he's talking from his own perspective at this part of the bible
01:03:06.900 pretty much every christian that i'm aware of has no problem with jesus being unaware of something
01:03:13.600 right before he's dead if what's talking about here is his own death then it sort of proved
01:03:19.960 because it's the only time period where the son from the traditional christian perspective wouldn't
01:03:24.540 have known now if you take a techno puritan perspective this is also uniquely edifying
01:03:28.800 because it's jesus talking about something that's going to happen you know to himself
01:03:33.300 right here in this particular context to continue daniel uh 9 24 through 27 uh 70 weeks are
01:03:42.400 determined upon the people and upon thy holy city to finish transgression and to make the end of
01:03:47.580 sins and to make reconciliation for inequity and to bring in everlasting righteousness and to seal
01:03:53.000 up the vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy know therefore and understand that from going
01:03:59.060 force of the commandments to restore and rebuild jerusalem unto the messiah the prince shall be
01:04:04.840 seven weeks and three score and two weeks and the street shall be built again and the wall and even
01:04:11.420 the troublous times and after three score and two weeks shall the messiah be cut off but not for
01:04:17.380 himself and the people and the prince shall not come and destroy the city and the sanctuary and
01:04:23.020 the end there shall be with a flood and unto the end the war descalations and determined and thou
01:04:31.720 shall confirm the covenant with many for one week and in the midst of a week he shall cause the
01:04:36.660 sacrifice and the abdulation to cease and the overspanning of abominations he should make
01:04:43.020 desolate even until the consummation and the determined shall be poured upon the desolate
01:04:49.160 Now, I have no clue what those time fables are.
01:04:52.440 I will try to determine if it matches anything.
01:04:56.740 Holy moly, it's a literal exact match.
01:05:00.620 So if you take what's said here, 70 weeks are determined upon thy people, upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression and make the end of sins.
01:05:08.320 So this unit here, 70 weeks, it doesn't actually say weeks.
01:05:11.440 It says 77s.
01:05:12.600 Um, so if you'd 70 sevens, whatever a seven is, doesn't mean a week, but it happens to mean a
01:05:20.020 month. Okay. Um, and we take the, uh, date that is most common for the crucifixion. And then we
01:05:28.960 say how long after that, until the temple burns, it's 484 months. Whereas the 77 number would give
01:05:39.620 us 483 months. So it would be off by only one month. And keep in mind, we might have got something
01:05:46.320 wrong in the history here. That is absolutely remarkable accuracy for a number that is just
01:05:52.460 plainly said there, and people have been interpreting in all of these different crazy
01:05:56.700 ways. And note here, this isn't a number that Jesus said or that Christians put in. This is
01:06:00.680 a number that was already in Hebrew prophecy or Jewish prophecy. Absolutely wild and confirming 0.99
01:06:06.720 to me and more so the hardening of people's minds to not see this very easy math just literally say
01:06:12.380 how many months from when he died till the most important event in all of Jewish history
01:06:16.360 that it seems to be talking about here and that he seems to be talking about here the destruction
01:06:21.320 of the temple when people do all this weird end of the world Jerusalem math and stuff like that 0.99
01:06:28.320 oh my god I hate how Christians have made such an easy and obviously true thing so hard to believe 1.00
01:06:34.980 by adding all of this nonsense they want to put in 1.00
01:06:38.540 when it's just so plainly stated
01:06:40.300 and the prophecy fits so miraculously.
01:06:44.240 I should also note here
01:06:45.520 that the text does not explicitly give the unit
01:06:48.080 it's talking about.
01:06:48.960 People often assume it's talking about years
01:06:50.820 because it appears to be referencing
01:06:52.320 a different thing about years,
01:06:53.740 but it could very well be talking about months
01:06:56.020 and it fits perfectly.
01:06:58.180 And again, if the prophecy was meant to be for two events,
01:07:01.100 it would make sense that you would have a flexible unit type
01:07:03.720 so it could fit two things miraculously.
01:07:06.640 But my intuition is they match both the first event in one way
01:07:12.640 that they were likely describing,
01:07:14.200 and then they also are relevant to the Messiah in this context, right?
01:07:18.940 If Jesus is the Jewish Messiah,
01:07:21.140 this is also weirdly in alignment with what actually ended up happening. 0.59
01:07:27.960 Some other lines here.
01:07:30.700 i'm not gonna go through every line that's that's i i find a lot of this the the more prophetic
01:07:37.880 writing to be a lot less interesting than the writing like in mark which again was the closest
01:07:43.140 to jesus's life which just sort of plainly explains to you what's gonna happen yeah yeah 0.72
01:07:50.600 the romans are coming for you and romans are coming right into the hills gonna suck 0.98
01:07:54.400 a lot of people are gonna die they're gonna die because they're preaching about me there's gonna 0.99
01:07:59.280 be a lot of false messiahs there's going to be rumors of war there's going to be some actual war
01:08:03.360 uh the nations will go against nations um and people take all this and they apply it to the
01:08:08.800 apocalypse and then they're always looking for the apocalypse and um even what's weird is even
01:08:13.680 jesus even even if you take this apocalyptic context you're told not to but i don't like
01:08:17.940 when i read this it seems to really be plainly and even very serious christians thought this
01:08:22.940 was a major problem like c.s lewis really be plainly just laying out what's going to happen
01:08:28.140 to these people within their own lifetime and the conversation what's interesting about it all is
01:08:32.460 if you translated it to modern language the conversation just seems so normal right like
01:08:39.960 it's it's it's they go to the temple it's really amazing they're a bunch of country bumpkins it's
01:08:45.120 the coolest thing they've ever seen they go to him they're like this is a really cool temple dude
01:08:51.220 um look at how impressive this all is and then he goes to them it's all gonna be torn down soon
01:08:56.840 you know it's it's just gonna be rubble soon and then later that day they're sitting in it's really
01:09:01.900 cool the mount olives you can go to it and you can sit in it as i have and and look across and
01:09:06.700 you can see where the the temple was it's just like and it's still kept it's like a park that
01:09:11.720 you can go to so just you know he's just sitting there like a real place you can see not not far
01:09:16.460 from the temple just chilling out with some dudes 2 000 years ago and then one of the dudes is like
01:09:20.900 okay bro broseph um that stuff you said about the temple falling down like when when is that
01:09:29.460 gonna happen can you give me some deets like what's what's gonna happen with this and he's
01:09:33.060 like okay so first of all it's gonna happen in your lifetime so like listen the second of all
01:09:39.280 uh so there's gonna be like rumors of war there's gonna be like nation set against nation uh the
01:09:45.140 moment it happens you just get the you don't have time for like a runaway sack or anything like that
01:09:50.840 you don't have time for a cape you just in run okay you just run for those hills because that
01:09:58.080 would have been the best advice during that period yeah for the hills that's the hardest 0.99
01:10:00.800 i mean look at the afghanis right you just run for in hills man um and his disciples and i do 0.99
01:10:06.360 like the plain wording because we know that everyone slept on the roofs uh and so i even
01:10:12.780 like that part you know if if you like for those who are sleeping on the roofs or whatever it said
01:10:16.780 when you originally read it it's like oh wow okay yeah they're just describing yeah which wouldn't
01:10:22.040 have been relevant to people in our time but it is relevant to people in his time yeah and they're
01:10:25.780 just like oh okay yeah just can run okay good advice man it's the it's the clearest most simple
01:10:33.180 there's nothing mystical about it there's nothing shaded about it or like extra he just plainly
01:10:40.640 tells them in the way that now you get a lot of the apocalyptic stuff because one later christians
01:10:46.400 wanted to read a lot of that into it which is fine you know you can be like oh that adds deeper
01:10:51.340 meaning which i think it kind of does uh but like the actual closest to the source document we have
01:10:57.140 is just a dude saying this is going to be destroyed later that time they're chilling
01:11:00.820 at a park looking at it and they're like when and he's like and i love that it ends with an
01:11:05.960 exclamation mark and like pay attention guys watch exclamation mark
01:11:12.120 yeah i wonder if apocalypticism in general is one of those things kind of like worshiping
01:11:21.540 false idols that people kind of get caught up with because there's such a strong tendency for it
01:11:27.440 and why it's it is both abolished in the bible like trying to make prophecies but also prophets
01:11:36.820 are still given precedence like i think in almost the same set of lines where they talk about how
01:11:44.920 important it is to not try to engage in divination it's also like yeah but the things that prophets
01:11:51.020 say really matter kind of implies that people have this desire to engage in fortune telling
01:11:56.780 well and as we know how does jesus say you know if it's a real prophet or not
01:12:01.000 I can't remember.
01:12:02.360 It's, do they say that he came in the flesh?
01:12:05.980 So if they're going out there and saying Jesus,
01:12:08.240 again, this is a techno-puritan thing,
01:12:10.020 but this is what Jesus said,
01:12:12.440 is that's how you determine between true and false prophets,
01:12:15.880 is if they are claiming, at least my read of that,
01:12:18.860 is if they are claiming that Jesus was divine
01:12:23.360 or not the son of man or, you know,
01:12:26.680 any of those other things.
01:12:27.960 And again, you can see our previous tracks.
01:12:29.320 this is where we diverge from classical christianity pretty heavily um but where we make
01:12:33.760 diversions it is because we see these diversions in the text um and because it aligns was what's
01:12:41.680 logical from our perspective um what one of the things about this interpretation or like
01:12:49.640 broadly reading the bible this way and a lot of people are like well no i want to read it my way
01:12:54.100 with the apocalypses and all of this extra stuff and it's like yeah fine you can add all this extra
01:12:58.740 stuff but isn't it weird that like on its own the bible is both predictive it makes sense and
01:13:05.720 jesus doesn't come off as a crazy wacko i often think a lot of the traditional readings of jesus
01:13:11.020 making come off as like very arrogant and holier than now and stuff like that but when you actually
01:13:16.600 read the bible he's really not he's really not like bogarting information from these people
01:13:21.780 he's not you know putting himself like wait he's just like yeah you know be ready to run man it's
01:13:27.280 gonna be wild it's gonna be like those prophetic times you know and like daniel yeah purity for
01:13:33.740 that stuff um and it's gonna be tied to my death potentially he'd say that a little arrogant but
01:13:40.880 he doesn't really say it in an arrogant way or at least i don't find it that way um and and so you
01:13:45.120 know again you can go off traditional christians got true i think even traditional christians will
01:13:50.220 get something out of this uh deep dive into it um but i found i think many traditional christians
01:13:56.900 when you ask them, hold this view.
01:13:58.700 It's just very bizarre to me
01:14:00.740 how in the minority it is.
01:14:05.680 Part of me wonders if we just want to think
01:14:08.240 apocalypses look like movie apocalypses,
01:14:11.880 whereas maybe that's even just a recent thing
01:14:14.300 where in the past it was kind of understood
01:14:17.960 that an apocalypse was a paradigm change.
01:14:20.260 This event was apocalyptic for the Jews. 1.00
01:14:22.540 Well, yeah. 0.72
01:14:22.820 If you were going to choose any one event in Jewish history when the Jewish apocalypse happened, the Holocaust wouldn't even be a distant second. 0.67
01:14:33.860 It was the destruction of the second temple. 0.67
01:14:35.540 It completely changed what it meant to be Jewish and basically meant the religion and people had to reinvent themselves as a culture and society. 0.71
01:14:45.720 It was the inflection point of Judaism. 0.77
01:14:48.140 if a messiah was going to come right before the jewish apocalypse and prepare an iteration of 0.86
01:14:54.740 judaism that worked without the temple which is what's said about the apocalypse this would have
01:15:00.680 been the time for it to happen yeah right like i mean it is odd as i've said in other tracks and
01:15:05.040 it's one of the core things that convinces me that christianity is the right branch of judaism 0.96
01:15:08.720 is that that he came down and predicted all of this and like even jews don't 0.96
01:15:14.460 like there's all of these things in the jewish tradition will likely do attract on it eventually
01:15:19.460 where a lot of their miracles stopped working like at exactly at this time like around jesus's death
01:15:24.120 and they even recorded in their own writings you believe to this yeah miracles like the temple
01:15:28.560 doors blowing open all the time and the uh the the scapegoat ceremony the something wasn't turning
01:15:34.600 red in the way it was supposed to to imply that it was still working um and so like a lot of the
01:15:39.460 temple rituals stopped working during this time basically you can say god left the temple before
01:15:44.960 he destroyed the temple and this is jesus which would make sense if it turns out that jesus was
01:15:49.480 actually the jewish and the messiah and this was the function he was meant to fill which to me
01:15:54.260 seems like the like ethical direction judaism would have went during this period if it was
01:15:59.500 actually a true religion and i think it was and that's why it went in this direction um so that's
01:16:04.960 where i'm gonna leave off today uh i thought about going into the wedding story because it's very
01:16:08.440 interesting and some wedding story is bizarre i don't know why we had to use that well so the
01:16:13.340 wedding story is actually pretty good but a lot of people take it to be proof that mark was written
01:16:18.060 after the destruction of the temple and i'm like no it doesn't read like proof that it was after
01:16:22.620 the destruction of the temple because the story literally sits immediately before it's sort of
01:16:26.960 talking about why you could say why the jewish people would be punished during this period
01:16:30.580 which is to say uh and we know that god punishes the jewish people when they do things that he 0.51
01:16:34.520 doesn't like that all jews like believes this is part of judaism and and immediately after this
01:16:39.440 he gets in an argument with a pharisee and then he gets into an argument with a sadducee and these
01:16:44.220 were the two primary major sects of judaism during this period and so it's sort of like presenting
01:16:50.060 him as an alternate to the pharisees and the sadducees and if you're talking about like the
01:16:54.340 rearranging of thrones and stuff like this you know this makes a lot of sense in this context
01:16:58.300 um i i think just like holistically was a wider narrative it makes so much sense that jesus
01:17:03.240 appears to have been trying to promote that it doesn't uh to me read as if it was written
01:17:11.100 afterwards was like a we knew this was going to happen mindset now for you how did this make you
01:17:17.100 because this was the one line that you had really believed really yeah really bothered me that jesus
01:17:22.360 thought that the world was going to end in his lifetime and this is what he taught people because
01:17:25.880 this is what the historical theology teachers have taught you and then you read the line in context
01:17:31.080 do you actually think like my reading is like it seems very plain what he meant it does seem very
01:17:36.660 plain yeah um i think maybe when i did pull quotes in the past i was pulling from a different book
01:17:42.720 and so that's you know and it seems like again this is why i'm so uncomfortable with the new
01:17:49.000 testament because i feel like so many things were written so long after and with so many
01:17:54.200 different agendas at play that i just don't really know what to trust and it's a very complicated
01:18:01.340 act well and this is a very techno puritan part to this which i should explain to people like
01:18:06.440 um the the bibles themselves the various books of the bible when we're talking about how much
01:18:13.680 authority do we assign them uh we would assign something like mark dramatically more authority
01:18:20.500 than something like Matthew because of what we know historically about that book,
01:18:26.000 if you believe, like we believe, that Jesus was the actual Jewish Messiah.
01:18:29.520 No, we believe that God had stuff written in Matthew or had stuff written in Luke
01:18:34.740 or had stuff written in other books of the Bible
01:18:37.540 because we were supposed to interpret something from it.
01:18:40.920 But when we are trying to find out what actually happened in Jesus' life
01:18:45.280 or what Jesus actually believed about things,
01:18:47.840 because that's what we're supposed to learn from,
01:18:50.500 um we need to understand that look if you're a christian today many christians today they will
01:18:55.260 say things like oh well i know that in in like the ten commandments it says you know don't worship
01:19:02.800 other gods before me which sort of implies other gods are real well people of that time period in
01:19:07.620 that region did believe other gods are real we just know today that they're not right and and
01:19:12.660 and we do this was also you know when you talk about why does genesis use a plural for god and
01:19:17.080 in some places to be like, well, people back then, you know, and so it's very common for
01:19:20.760 Christians today to be like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, these were real people. They were writing
01:19:24.640 something real and understanding updated through time. Right. And so, but when you talk about the
01:19:30.780 New Testament, they're just like, no, no, no, no. It's often many of them are like, no, that didn't
01:19:33.720 happen. We don't take that perspective. I take the perspective that, yeah, some of the stuff
01:19:37.960 written in the New Testament might have been added after the fact and might not correlate
01:19:42.800 with the actual events of jesus's life that said if they were added after the fact and didn't
01:19:49.120 correlate with like a real exact thing he said because somebody wanted to add some clarification
01:19:52.140 for it god meant for that to happen and we are still supposed to learn from that but that doesn't
01:19:56.780 change how we investigate these texts which is to say and this affects some of our beliefs that
01:20:02.100 we'll get to in future um tracks like a big one is if you do apply this to how seriously you take
01:20:11.860 different texts in the bible actually i'll just lay out this belief here so we don't need to do
01:20:15.460 a full track around it because it does have a a page on technopuritan.com that you can put into
01:20:21.300 ai and go through how we broke this down how how i sort of did the research on this but basically
01:20:26.820 if you don't really include a lot of stuff from acts as being as serious as the stuff that happened
01:20:32.200 in jesus's life right like a lot of stuff that the early christian communities were doing it really
01:20:37.300 looks like uh communal prayer is not supposed to be a big thing um or was not a big part of
01:20:44.940 the tradition oh yeah you haven't even done your tract on worship yet yeah jesus is is usually
01:20:50.560 praying alone um with small groups of people right or he's talking about religion with small
01:20:56.200 yeah so like how does he do like a religious service uh what you often would do is you would
01:21:01.560 sit down at a meal with people this appears we see this in a lot of the earliest enactments of
01:21:05.800 christian context um they they'd all sit down for a meal together and they'd eat and they would talk
01:21:11.880 about their ideas about religious concepts which to me sounds like a great way to do a religious
01:21:17.540 service um and this is what's happening at the last supper is is one of these but this isn't the
01:21:22.360 only place we see something like this happening you do occasionally have sermons and stuff like
01:21:26.920 that um but they're never in churches uh they're they're the sermon on the mount for example right
01:21:33.360 Like, he's outside talking to people somewhere, right?
01:21:37.680 No, that doesn't mean that Jesus never talked in a synagogue.
01:21:40.760 For example, in Luke, we see him reading scripture in a synagogue.
01:21:45.220 And when he's on trial, he says that he even spoke at the temple.
01:21:49.760 Now, this is speaking in, like, a square area, the temple courts, where, like, anyone could come and speech.
01:21:54.300 It's a bit like, you know, one of those public speaking parks or something.
01:21:56.800 So, again, not exactly like a church in a modern context.
01:22:00.060 But it is the minority of cases.
01:22:02.280 in fact when we when we see something like a synagogue it's usually in a negative context
01:22:06.900 uh things are being flipped over stuff like this um and this makes sense if you're talking about
01:22:10.720 like the early house christian movement and stuff like this um and what that leads me to interpret
01:22:16.680 or intuit is maybe the way that we are supposed to pray and practice the sabbath is at home with
01:22:25.460 our family right and not necessarily in a group context now there are a lot of places where he
01:22:31.040 points out that like the larger community of worshipers is a positive thing and that you should
01:22:36.100 interact or convene but it's not said that at those your sin's supposed to spend all your time
01:22:41.340 praying um which makes sense i mean if you're going to build out a community you want to meet
01:22:45.980 with the other people right like that's how uh you you do this and he even talks about these as
01:22:51.120 fairly small meetings like the line that people often say is like oh you know when jesus says if
01:22:55.500 two two believers are in a room you know he's here with them and it's like well then why did
01:22:58.820 he go as low as two he could have said more if he expected really large groups but he doesn't
01:23:04.180 that's good point and i think it keeps worship a lot more humble uh and it prevents it from being
01:23:09.880 performative which i think is really risky and something that jesus warned about heavily at the
01:23:14.280 sermon on the mount um and so this can come from this sort of interpretation uh do i think that
01:23:20.500 it's like uniquely bad to build churches to go i think it works for some people um i just don't
01:23:27.100 know if it's what i take away when i read the bible for what i would teach my kids and my family
01:23:32.140 um the other thing that we're going to be going over is the sabbath which i was very surprised
01:23:35.380 about is very clearly on saturday and not sunday um the bible is like super clear nothing in the
01:23:40.400 new testament or the old testament but especially the new testament says we're we're renaming the
01:23:44.120 sabbath we're making it sunday instead uh this is something that early christians decide not even
01:23:48.740 that early christian no one asked them to do it um and then constantine said uh we're gonna make
01:23:54.040 this about a day about the sun god um and we'll use it as like a a special day um and since he
01:24:01.740 was a christian now he specifically said this was for pagan reasons he said it was about the sun god
01:24:06.100 and um and then christian well catholic councils there might have been pre-catholic councils uh
01:24:12.960 decided uh you you now can't use the jewish sabbath which is a problem because jesus said
01:24:21.520 the 10 commandments still hold specifically constantine decree said on the venerable day
01:24:29.440 of the sun venerary daya solus let the magistrates and people residing in the cities rest and let
01:24:36.160 all workshops be closed in the country however persons engaged in agriculture may freely and
01:24:41.200 lawfully continue their pursuits less by neglecting the proper movement the bounty of the heaven
01:24:45.640 should be lost. Now, it's important to note here that he used the pagan calendar name Day of the
01:24:51.380 Sun, not the Lord's Day, not resurrection, doesn't mention Jesus. It is a city rest law for judges,
01:24:58.180 town folks, and craftsmen, and farmers were to keep working, which doesn't follow traditional
01:25:03.380 Sabbath rules. Even Jesus' Sabbath rules, like you're allowed to save a sheep or something,
01:25:07.700 but you're not supposed to be tending the land. So this is very clearly a pagan Sabbath. That's 0.82
01:25:14.720 the best way you could describe it. So the council that said that you can't practice the Sabbath on
01:25:21.860 Saturday happened at the Synod of Lydacy, specifically Canon 29. Christians must not 0.97
01:25:29.020 Judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work that day, rather honoring the Lord's day. And if
01:25:34.660 they can, resting then as Christians. But if in any found to be Judaizers, let them be an anathema 1.00
01:25:41.000 to christ so they literally even even the wording here say that they cannot christians cannot rest 0.92
01:25:46.260 on the sabbath which is clearly jesus rested on the sabbath this is what we see from from the
01:25:51.900 bible right like we see them going directly against the 10 commandments here and when people
01:25:57.520 are like oh just follow the great christian thinkers of old just do what they do i'm like well
01:26:02.480 they made a lot of like really big and obvious mistakes another one we'll get to is you are not
01:26:08.800 allowed to do sacrifices on an altar of hewn stone and yet one of the councils literally said
01:26:16.440 you had to do sacrifices on an altar of hewn stone but this one is probably the worst because
01:26:21.100 they're literally saying you cannot rest on the sabbath which is one of the ten commandments
01:26:24.260 uh which is absolutely wild you must work on the sabbath an early council said that
01:26:29.880 so i had i had to look this up because i actually couldn't believe it and and note here that many
01:26:38.660 christians were actually practicing sunday as a day of rest before constantine but it is true that
01:26:43.400 there's nothing in the new testament that told them to do this um and in the new testament jesus
01:26:47.460 regularly treats the sabbath as the sabbath but what was really crazy about this is uh this is
01:26:55.800 before the catholic orthodox split so when a lot of people are like go back to the early church
01:26:59.260 they got everything right i cannot imagine you know biblically getting something more wrong
01:27:04.960 than commanding that people have to work on the sabbaths and i even checked and yes they called
01:27:10.200 it literally the sabbath they say you have to work on the sabbaths which just all throughout
01:27:14.460 the old testament like no and even in jesus's own teachings very no you know the sabbath was made
01:27:22.540 for man man not for the sabbath that's great that's really cool that sort of lays out that the
01:27:26.500 laws the ten commandments man wasn't made to follow the ten commandments but the ten commandments
01:27:30.620 were made to make man's life better awesome doesn't mean that you're not supposed to at
01:27:35.320 least attempt to be observant of them much less make a commandment of your people that they have
01:27:38.800 to go directly against them um and so uh you do something like almost all christians are doing
01:27:45.580 wrong uh and it's really bad um and it's something that will be stricter on in the future we had to
01:27:49.700 talk about this today and we'll probably do an upcoming episode on it what what really do you
01:27:54.060 get to do during the sabbath it's not an entertainment day it's it's it's not a four
01:27:57.900 your personal business day. It is a day where you're supposed to be doing things that are
01:28:02.060 productive for your religion and community and family. So this would be, you know, spending time
01:28:08.680 with family, spending time to educate yourself, et cetera, spending time to learn more, spending
01:28:13.700 time to understand more, studying. And that's what we'll be doing going forward is more time
01:28:18.240 with family, more time studying and make it a no work day. So in the future, no more emails from
01:28:22.760 me on saturdays uh that's that's where we're going with this um like okay bye gotta polish
01:28:28.460 up the pictures you could tell that titan is somewhat related to my mom look at that mischief
01:28:33.840 right there that is someone great who is up to no good 100 so it's not just you
01:28:43.480 it's not just you i'm so excited for this one though the boys have been
01:28:50.240 boys as always
01:28:54.160 but i'm so glad that torston found steggy and he says that steggy told him told him that he was in
01:29:01.400 a factory that produced toxic waste and that he found his way back to our house somehow
01:29:06.220 which is wonderful really yes it's true it's true octavian meanwhile has been roving our house with
01:29:15.660 his rifle and that blue hat, which makes him look very, it's a look.
01:29:24.020 All right.
01:29:26.880 Hello, Egg.
01:29:27.800 What does that mean?
01:29:29.100 It just means, it just means that he's going to have, it just means that he has one, two,
01:29:40.440 three, four eggs.
01:29:42.880 Steggy, good job.
01:29:44.260 You're going to have such a big family. 0.96
01:29:46.260 Yeah, but mommy.
01:29:48.260 Do you know that if I don't have something to get him to eat, he won't want any more eggs.
01:29:54.260 What does Steggy eat?
01:29:56.260 He eats dead dogs, he eats dead birds, he eats dead dickies, he eats...
01:30:04.260 Macaroni cheese?
01:30:06.260 No, he eats some...
01:30:10.260 Squid?
01:30:11.260 No, he eats some...
01:30:13.260 Pizza.
01:30:14.820 No, I was going to tell you.
01:30:17.960 He eats some
01:30:19.400 T-Rex eggs.
01:30:21.580 Does he eat
01:30:23.260 dead dragon?
01:30:25.500 No.
01:30:26.060 Oh my goodness. 0.97
01:30:28.400 If he eats dead
01:30:30.000 dragon, we'll just 0.90
01:30:31.880 give him a live duck.
01:30:34.680 And I got
01:30:36.440 T-Rex egg right here.
01:30:38.340 Look, it's a live
01:30:40.220 giant duck. 1.00
01:30:41.360 And it wants to eat all of the eggs. 0.99
01:30:43.800 Yeah! 0.97
01:30:45.300 Ooh!
01:30:47.420 Yeah!
