course of the week just catch up and hang out and act as if we're grabbing a cup of coffee together
00:00:17.760
but today we're doing something a little different i wanted to do an entire episode of the scoop
00:00:22.480
dedicated to passover so i am going to be explaining some of our traditions what the
00:00:27.600
holiday is about and i'm really excited to share this one with you here on my channel we talk about
00:00:32.240
commentary lifestyle beauty fashion and opera all from a conservative and classic perspective so if
00:00:38.480
that's something that you'd be interested in feel free to subscribe and make sure to ring that
00:00:42.640
notification bell so grab a cup of coffee or a cup of tea or maybe some iced coffee since we're getting
00:00:48.320
into warmer weather and let's get into it so passover is one of my absolute favorite jewish
00:00:54.160
holidays it's eight days and the first few days are what we call a yom tov which means a good day
00:01:00.080
literally translated but what it really means is that it's very similar to sabbath in that we can't
00:01:04.880
use electricity we can't drive and those same days we have at the end of the holiday and in the middle
00:01:10.000
we can go to work or whatever else and we're celebrating the jewish exodus from egypt where we
00:01:15.840
were enslaved and to commemorate that we only eat unleavened bread matzah and we're not allowed to have
00:01:22.880
anything that even remotely comes close to bread so we're not allowed to have any chips or crackers
00:01:27.680
or cookies that have any sort of leaven and in hebrew the word pesach which is what we call
00:01:32.960
passover in hebrew it comes from the idea that god passed over the jews when god was killing the first
00:01:39.120
born on the eve of our emancipation which was one of the ten plagues so i will explain all of that that's
00:01:45.360
a lot of information but the story of passover starts with the jews being enslaved in egypt and we
00:01:51.200
suffered back-breaking labor and unbearable horrors as slaves and god sent moses to pharaoh saying let
00:01:57.680
my people go and pharaoh said no way and then god sent the ten plagues upon egypt and at the end of
00:02:04.960
those ten plagues the worst of the ten plagues which was the killing of all of the firstborn in the land
00:02:10.000
of egypt pharaoh changed his mind and he allowed the jews to leave the land of egypt and the reason
00:02:16.560
that we call pesach which is passover in hebrew passover is because the jews painted the blood
00:02:23.280
of a lamb on their door frames so that god would know that they were jews and he would pass over
00:02:30.160
them instead of killing the firstborns in those homes now when pharaoh allowed the jews to leave
00:02:35.920
egypt we raced out of there so quickly that our bread wasn't even able to rise and that is why we eat
00:02:42.720
matzah on this holiday and that's why we don't eat leavened bread and after we left the land of
00:02:47.920
egypt we received the torah at mount sinai so as you can see this is an incredibly important holiday
00:02:53.760
to the jews it's a really important holiday leading up to us actually becoming jews and accepting the
00:02:59.280
torah and becoming god's chosen people and to commemorate the holiday the first two nights of
00:03:05.120
passover we do a seder the seder is an opportunity to talk about the story of the jews being emancipated
00:03:11.360
from egypt by going through the haggadah which is the book that compiles the story and as we're
00:03:18.160
going through it we want the children to ask questions we want to engage with the story as
00:03:23.600
if we ourselves are leaving egypt and are being released from the bonds of slavery and it's really
00:03:28.720
amazing to do it every single year and to go through it with our families we drink four glasses
00:03:33.920
of wine or grape juice we eat quite a bit of matzah we eat bitter herbs there's a bunch of different
00:03:39.840
traditions in the seder and the seder itself would be a video that would take a very long time to
00:03:44.480
describe i mean usually they start around 7 30 8 pm depending on the year and they go till 12 1 2
00:03:52.320
in the morning i mean it is super long but also an incredible experience and going back a little bit
00:03:58.640
not only do we not eat leavened bread we also rid our entire houses of it we clean our houses it's
00:04:05.200
basically a giant spring cleaning and then we tape off any cabinets that have leavened foods in them
00:04:11.680
and we sell them to somebody so that we don't actually own any leavened foods that it's a process
00:04:17.600
that is kind of worked through rabbis and we purchase it back afterwards but it's very important to do
00:04:23.440
that because the mitzvah the commandment of not eating leavened bread or owning leavened bread
00:04:29.360
is one of the most important of passover so that is kind of an overview of passover it's kind of an
00:04:36.400
overview of what we do on this holiday and it's one of my favorite holidays it's a holiday that we
00:04:41.840
spend with my family every year and it's an opportunity for me to explore this incredible
00:04:48.560
story of our nation and to reconnect with god every year of course we reconnect with god through
00:04:54.800
all of the jewish holidays but this one is it's really unique and i absolutely love it for that
00:05:00.800
so if you have any more questions make sure to leave them in the comments below and i will try
00:05:04.560
to respond to as many as i can again i want to be clear i'm not an expert i'm not a rabbi i just
00:05:10.160
know this from having practiced it for many years so that doesn't make me the end-all be-all of all
00:05:16.560
answers i will answer as best as i can but i'd also love to know in the comments something about easter
