Summary
In this episode of The Scoop, I discuss the controversy surrounding the new Netflix film, Cuties, and how it could be used as a breeding ground for pedophiles. I talk about the artistic value of over sexualizing children, but does it justify the use of children to prove a point?

Hello, Classic Crew, and welcome to today's episode of The Scoop.
00:00:06.980
If you are new to my channel, The Scoop is our opportunity each week to just catch up.
00:00:11.920
Imagine that we're grabbing a cup of coffee together and just kind of hang out, go over
00:00:17.360
I love to hear what you guys have been up to in the comments, and of course, I just share
00:00:21.440
what I've been thinking about and doing this week.
00:00:23.500
So if it's still hot in your area, grab some iced coffee, and if you're starting to feel
00:00:27.640
the effects of fall already, grab some hot tea or a latte, and let's get into it.
00:00:32.360
So let's start off today's episode by talking about this film, Cuties.
00:00:36.340
I did talk about this a little bit in an older episode of The Scoop before the movie had actually
00:00:42.360
There was some controversy about the initial poster that Netflix released.
00:00:46.600
So Cuties is a French film that Netflix is putting onto their platforms, and the initial
00:00:51.320
poster that Netflix released in America was a very sexualized poster of 11-year-old girls
00:00:57.900
in overly sexual positions, in overly sexual clothing, and it was pedophilic.
00:01:06.200
Netflix simply apologized for the poster and said that they would redesign the poster, but
00:01:11.740
of course, people weren't just upset about the poster.
00:01:14.180
They were upset about the concept for the movie.
00:01:16.740
So the concept of the movie is that you have an 11-year-old girl who grew up in a traditional
00:01:21.960
household, and then she meets other 11-year-olds in her area who are not from traditional households
00:01:28.180
and who like to dance and have been over-sexualized by the internet and the things that they've
00:01:34.720
On Twitter, clips from the film were making the rounds and showing these girls, these 11-year-old
00:01:40.240
girls in incredibly sexual situations that were filmed in a way that looks like pedophilia.
00:01:48.160
So I want to talk about why the movie is an issue and why people are trying to defend it.
00:01:53.380
So essentially, the director of the movie says that the message of the film is that
00:01:57.200
the over-sexualization of children is a bad thing, and that she's trying to prove that
00:02:04.280
And she's trying to say that there is suffering caused by over-sexualizing children at a young
00:02:09.540
So the point of the movie isn't that it's pedophilic and it's not to glorify sexualizing
00:02:14.320
It's to show that it's wrong and that it's a bad thing.
00:02:19.760
The idea that we shouldn't be over-sexualizing children is a good thing.
00:02:26.180
Number one, there were real children used in the making of this film.
00:02:31.220
This wasn't adults pretending to be children that maybe could look or pass as being younger.
00:02:36.180
This was actual children being put in sexual positions to prove a point.
00:02:41.640
Are we comfortable as a society with allowing parents to let their children be used to prove
00:02:47.140
Are we comfortable with allowing children to be put in sexual situations to perform in
00:02:52.320
a sexual film so that we can prove that the over-sexualization of children is bad?
00:03:00.040
We're still putting children in a bad situation.
00:03:03.280
We're still allowing these young girls to be performing in sexual ways.
00:03:11.240
You have these little girls being taught sexual choreography with adults where they're going
00:03:16.400
to be shooting a sexual scene over and over where they're going to be performing sexual
00:03:23.760
And all of this is happening in front of grown people.
00:03:29.420
Now number two is that this film is fodder for pedophiles.
00:03:33.360
You put this out there for any pedophile to see.
00:03:40.740
If you've seen clips from the movie, you would know that what you're seeing on film
00:03:46.620
You might be making a good point that over-sexualizing children is bad.
00:03:51.460
But is the artistic value of this film enough to justify that you are making child pornography?
00:03:57.440
Also, how badly do you get to fail at making your alleged point before we get to question
00:04:05.600
Because watching the clips of this movie, they didn't have to film it in this way.
00:04:11.280
They didn't have to film the little girls in such a sexual way where it's zooming in
00:04:22.160
So when do we get to question, was that really your point?
00:04:25.880
Do we just always have to accept an artist's intention if that's what they say that it is?
00:04:29.900
Even if what they're putting out is vile and in many ways doing the opposite of what they say?
00:04:35.140
Now, I'm not saying that that was her intention, that the director was trying to make child
00:04:40.380
pornography under the guise of saying that it was about how sexualization of children
00:04:46.480
But I do have to ask that question because we kind of have to have standards in place.
00:04:50.440
Just because somebody said that it was their intention to make a movie about how sexualization
00:04:54.980
of children is bad and they had to make that point using child pornography, when do we
00:05:01.200
get to question if that was actually their point?
00:05:02.980
So I wanted to talk about Cuties and my thoughts on it because this is wrong.
00:05:08.940
This is child pornography that we are allowing to be just spread around when these children,
00:05:14.680
these young girls were put in a horrifying position.
00:05:18.300
And now this is going to be on the internet for the rest of their lives.
00:05:21.340
This movie is going to be a part of their lives forever that shows them in really, really
00:05:30.660
I would love to hear your guys' thoughts on this.
00:05:32.940
I was initially really taken aback by that poster, but then to see the clips from the
00:05:37.680
actual movie, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
00:05:40.420
And I know that people are arguing, again, that the intention of the movie is not what's
00:05:46.520
actually coming across on screen, but you filmed these little girls that way.
00:05:49.940
So I want to know what you guys think about this.
00:05:54.220
And now that we've focused on something pretty serious, we're going to be moving on to something
00:05:59.820
So I wanted to talk about how Rosh Hashanah is coming up this weekend.
00:06:03.420
So Rosh Hashanah means the head of the year, and it actually is the Jewish New Year.
00:06:08.520
So hooray, it's the end of one year and we're moving into the next.
00:06:13.040
But New Year's for Jews is actually kind of a mixture of celebration as well as introspection.
00:06:18.060
We're not just hooray, it's the end of the year and we're moving into a new year.
00:06:21.340
There's actually kind of something behind it, which is that we have an idea that the
00:06:25.300
book of life and death is opened on Rosh Hashanah, and God will inscribe our name into
00:06:32.280
Now, it then is closed on Yom Kippur, so we have 10 days to change it and to pray, and
00:06:41.000
But we spend much of the day for Rosh Hashanah in synagogue praying, trying to repent for our
00:06:46.800
sins for the last year, and trying to grow as people, and I've always thought that it's
00:06:51.360
not so much a scary day because God loves us, but more a day of how can I actually improve
00:06:57.260
It's really more on me to try and understand what have I done that I didn't like, and
00:07:02.080
how would I like to grow and be better in the coming year.
00:07:04.900
One of the major parts of Rosh Hashanah is that we hear the shofar being blown.
00:07:08.800
So the shofar is actually a ram's horn, and when you blow into it, it makes a very unique
00:07:14.260
sound, so you can probably look that up if you've never heard a shofar being blown before.
00:07:18.300
And it's supposed to be a wake-up call for our souls to repent and to think about how
00:07:25.520
So Rosh Hashanah is, of course, a very important day to Jews.
00:07:31.200
It's going to be a little bit odd this year because it's still coronavirus.
00:07:36.120
So I think a lot of synagogues still aren't completely open, so we're going to be praying
00:07:40.320
from home mostly, but we're also going to hopefully see just a couple of friends, you
00:07:47.160
And as well as the serious part of the holiday, we also have some beautiful traditions that
00:07:53.260
One is that we make challah, so challah is our bread.
00:07:56.740
Instead of making it just in the traditional braided way, we make it into a circle to represent
00:08:00.980
the cycle of life, and we also dip it in honey so that we can have a sweet year.
00:08:05.580
You've probably also heard of dipping apples in honey.
00:08:08.620
So I'm really looking forward to celebrating Rosh Hashanah this year, celebrating the new
00:08:13.200
And actually, my husband and I started a tradition the first year that we got married that we
00:08:17.080
wanted to send our New Year's card around Rosh Hashanah rather than the secular New Year.
00:08:21.560
So we send a New Year's card every year around Rosh Hashanah, kind of updating all of our friends
00:08:26.520
about what's going on in our lives, what we're up to, and it's kind of fun to create that
00:08:31.460
on Vistaprint or Minted or whatever it is that you would like to use.
00:08:35.420
I use Vistaprint, and we like to send those out.
00:08:37.840
I'd love to hear in the comments if you guys send out New Year's cards.
00:08:40.940
It's something that we like doing because we like receiving them.
00:08:43.480
We like seeing where our friends are at and seeing pictures of what they've been up to.
00:08:46.980
But we also like being able to share with people that we're not consistently in touch with just
00:08:50.940
kind of what we've been up to and what we're doing the next year.
00:08:53.580
Next up, I wanted to talk about a small thing that Jacob and I have been doing recently,
00:08:57.700
and it's something that I have found is just really sweet and nice and gives me a lot
00:09:03.080
So I would say that during the pandemic, things got a little bit funny in the sense
00:09:06.520
that my husband and I were watching actually more movies together than we were beforehand.
00:09:11.020
And so we would kind of watch a movie together, get ready for bed, maybe sit for just a couple
00:09:17.060
But recently what we've been doing is actually taking about a full hour and reading in bed
00:09:26.180
Oh my gosh, I've been loving ambient sounds before I go to sleep.
00:09:36.200
All that stuff just really kind of gives me some peace.
00:09:42.240
It's some time that we can spend kind of alone together.
00:09:45.260
That's one of my absolute favorite things about being married is spending alone time together.
00:10:02.400
Of course, I know that things tend to go in cycles.
00:10:04.920
So we might end up not keeping it up for too long.
00:10:07.480
But I would like to keep it up for as long as possible.
00:10:14.560
I don't know if it's because we're not going out so much in the evenings when it's fall time.
00:10:21.600
Now, as far as what we've been watching, my husband and I watched The Mask.
00:10:46.040
It didn't feel like I needed to expend a ton of energy to watch it.
00:10:50.520
But it was also something that I just had a good time watching.
00:11:02.760
Jim Carrey was in the prime of his career at that point.
00:11:09.780
And it was just kind of a fun comedy that I really enjoyed.
00:11:14.020
And I'm really curious to see who gets mad at me in the comments.
00:11:29.720
Is it one of those movies that's, like, perfect for fall time?
00:11:35.980
Everyone I know seems to treat it like, oh, it's fall.
00:11:43.660
And I'd love to get your guys' opinions about it.
00:11:49.620
So if you guys think it's worth watching, let me know in the comments below.
00:11:53.680
And last but not least, I want to know what you associate with fall the most.
00:11:58.360
Do you associate Thanksgiving with fall or Halloween with fall?
00:12:02.020
Because I think I associate Thanksgiving with fall mostly because I grew up religious.
00:12:10.240
I liked seeing it from afar in the Disney sense.
00:12:17.200
I like the Halloween thing where it's, like, a little bit fun scary.
00:12:21.940
And it's got, you know, the smiling jack-o'-lanterns.
00:12:29.700
But I just kind of liked looking at it from afar.
00:12:37.000
Especially nowadays when most of us get Thanksgiving off.
00:12:46.620
But I'd really like to know from you guys what you associate with fall.
00:12:53.240
And that's it for today's episode of The Scoop.
