00:00:46.880 So it is officially Hanukkah and it has been such an amazing Hanukkah.
00:00:52.140 This is the first time in a long time that we've like really celebrated
00:00:55.960 because we haven't really been in a Jewish community much since we've been married
00:00:59.560 but now it's like everybody is celebrating every single night and it's incredible.

00:02:28.160 because a lot of people think that it's just about how Jews rose up
00:02:32.060 and were able to fight their oppressors who were stopping them from practicing Judaism

00:02:37.920 We also were fighting against Hellenist Jews
00:02:40.100 who were the Jews who were trying to assimilate
00:02:43.380 and who were kind of throwing the practicing Jews under the bus.
00:02:47.600 So we also fought against them.
00:02:49.280 Like it wasn't just us fighting.
00:02:50.580 It wasn't just all the Jews united against all of the Greeks, the Syrian Greeks.
00:02:54.960 It was actually the religious observant Jews fighting against the Hellenist Jews and the Syrian Greeks.

00:03:07.440 But if you are ever wondering why do we eat potato latkes and donuts on Hanukkah
00:03:12.880 it's because it's fried in oil.
00:03:15.760 And the miracle of Hanukkah
00:03:17.600 is that there was after the temple was destroyed
00:03:22.680 the Jews came into the temple and wanted to light the menorah
00:03:27.100 and there was only enough oil to last one day
00:03:30.380 and they lit the menorah
00:03:32.900 and somebody went to go press more olive oil and make more
00:03:36.400 and the menorah lasted for eight days.
00:03:39.800 So that was the miracle of Hanukkah.
00:03:43.380 So to celebrate that we eat a lot of fried foods.

00:03:48.440 but that's where that comes from.
00:03:52.440 The colors for Hanukkah

00:03:55.080 Why do we have blue and white?
00:03:57.580 Because a lot of the times
00:03:58.780 like the color scheme for Hanukkah is blue and white.
00:04:02.060 So there's kind of a two part to this.

00:04:06.800 Hanukkah wasn't like the big holiday
00:04:09.500 until kind of Americanization of Jews
00:04:13.540 because Christmas was such a big deal
00:04:15.880 and Hanukkah happens around the same time of year.
00:04:18.420 So to give Jews something to celebrate at the same time of year
00:04:21.200 Hanukkah became like a very big holiday.
00:04:23.660 And so Hallmark says that the reason
00:04:25.420 that blue and white became the color scheme
00:04:28.200 because they started putting out
00:04:29.580 you know their cards and everything
00:04:31.020 and they chose blue and white.
00:04:33.880 The reason that they did that
00:04:35.200 was because the Israeli flag is blue and white.
00:04:38.580 Now where does the Israeli flag get its colors from?
00:04:41.680 The Israeli flag gets its colors from

00:04:44.740 which is the Jewish prayer shawl
00:04:46.360 and the original color for the Jewish prayer shawl
