Hello, beautiful ladies and gents, and welcome to today's video where we're going to be talking about Taylor Swift's new video, The Man.
00:00:10.300
So when I was younger, I was a huge fan of Taylor Swift. I loved her music, and I loved her fashion sense.
00:00:16.580
I used to try and go out and buy the same clothes she was wearing, copy her outfits, and I really liked her songs.
00:00:22.340
I thought her songs were really fun and relatable, and even when she moved into pop, I didn't really blame her for that.
00:00:29.160
Okay, she wants to change her sound, she wants to kind of change her demographic.
00:00:33.780
That doesn't really bother me. It wasn't my favorite. I started not liking her music as much, but it didn't make me not like her.
00:00:41.360
And then Taylor Swift decided that she was going to become an SJW.
00:00:46.180
Now, for those of you who don't know what an SJW is, that's a social justice warrior.
00:00:50.880
I did not like her as much after this happened.
00:00:53.940
It really felt like she polarized her followers into liberals and conservatives, and if you were not a liberal, she didn't want you listening to her.
00:01:02.520
Well, all I can say is that I didn't really want to listen to her anymore, so I stopped.
00:01:10.400
I actually wrote a piece for Evie Magazine about that, and I'll leave that in my description box below.
00:01:14.840
And that just made me realize once again that she has really decided that she is a victim.
00:01:21.900
Now, if you know me and if you know my blog, I am not a fan of victimhood.
00:01:27.120
I think it's really important to stand on your own two feet, and I don't think that calling yourself a victim really helps anyone.
00:01:33.120
But for someone like Taylor Swift, who has hundreds of millions of followers and hundreds of millions of dollars,
00:01:40.440
it's an upsetting thing that she's decided to call herself a victim.
00:01:44.260
It's also kind of scary, given the fact that she has so many followers who are willing to jump to her defense.
00:01:49.960
If she says she's a victim, guess how many people are going to defend her and say,
00:01:58.400
Now, I don't mind that the Swifties wanted to come after me after I put up this tweet,
00:02:04.340
Now, I wasn't even coming after Taylor Swift, really.
00:02:19.400
I was saying, I'm tired of women saying that we don't have rights in America.
00:02:23.500
Now, clearly, Taylor Swift's video was about women in America, and so was my tweet.
00:02:28.800
I wasn't trying to say that women around the world are given the same rights as men.
00:02:34.880
I was specifically talking about America, and a lot of the time,
00:02:38.060
feminists are arguing about equal rights and opportunities in America where we already have them.
00:02:43.280
But I just found it fascinating that all of Taylor Swift's fans, who are supposedly the ones who think that all women are heroes,
00:02:50.900
decided that when I tweeted something out against Taylor, they had the right to call me ugly, a rat,
00:02:59.800
Some of them did, although most of them did not.
00:03:02.540
And in my opinion, that's not really something to brag about.
00:03:04.900
If you are a famous person who has a lot of fans who want to follow your lead,
00:03:10.440
they're not really fighting for what you're fighting for.
00:03:18.980
But I thought I would give you guys an actual woman's response to Taylor Swift's The Man video.
00:03:25.660
The video starts off with her in an office, walking around, treating people badly,
00:03:53.320
and the lyrics are talking about how if she was a man, she could sleep around and no one would care
00:03:59.380
and people would actually give her praise for it.
00:04:01.520
Well, the first thing that made me think is, what kind of people are you hanging about with?
00:04:05.620
In the communities that I grew up in and in the communities that I still choose to be a part of,
00:04:09.880
if men are sleeping around, that's not a good thing.
00:04:12.280
That's not something that we espouse at all, actually.
00:04:17.960
Anybody who is sleeping around before they're married or in a way that's disrespectful to their partners
00:04:22.880
and isn't in relationships is not praised at all.
00:04:26.200
So why are you hanging around the people who are saying that stuff?
00:04:29.860
And even in the case where, okay, let's say broadly society says that men should be able to sleep around
00:04:36.000
and women shouldn't, why are we trying to make it so that women can instead of saying that men shouldn't either?
00:04:43.940
If we're living in a society where everyone can sleep with everyone and it doesn't matter,
00:04:50.300
Wouldn't you want it to be the scenario where men should not be sleeping around
00:04:54.060
and women should not be sleeping around in a way that's callous and awful?
00:04:58.340
Actually, women are not criticized, in my experience, for sleeping around.
00:05:04.200
Your friends give you a pat on the back and say, great job.
00:05:07.180
When JLo got up on stage at the Super Bowl and danced around as she did,
00:05:11.760
a lot of people criticized her, but a lot of people defended her.
00:05:15.200
So, clearly, there's a divide in this country and it's not people just saying,
00:05:20.020
oh, you slept around and you're a woman, that's bad.
00:05:23.320
There are people who are also saying, you slept around and you're a woman, that's empowerment.
00:05:29.780
I think that everyone should probably just not sleep around in a way that's gross.
00:05:35.580
But the fact of the matter is that I don't think that there's this crazy divide between men and women.
00:05:41.400
It really just depends on who you're spending time with.
00:05:53.160
I had to stop it there for you guys because when everyone believes ya, what's that like came up.
00:05:59.140
As a country, I think we've talked about this quite a bit,
00:06:02.060
but I don't think that hashtag believe all women is a good idea.
00:06:06.420
We've seen time and time again that women can lie.
00:06:09.280
Of course, there are situations where you should believe her.
00:06:14.760
But you can't just make a blanket statement that you should believe all women or believe all men in any scenario.
00:06:20.420
And we live in a country where it's innocent until proven guilty.
00:06:23.380
You can't just assume that a man has done something and therefore ruin his life forever.
00:06:30.200
So Taylor Swift just saying, oh, we should believe all women and I have a hundred million followers who will believe me.
00:06:38.360
I mean, that's a little bit dangerous, don't you think?
00:06:44.160
Wondering if I'd get there quick or if I was a man
00:06:59.880
The lyrics don't really go with what's happening on screen, so let's take them apart separately.
00:07:04.200
The lyrics say that she would have gotten there faster if she was a man.
00:07:07.020
She's a beautiful young woman who was famous by 15.
00:07:10.300
I don't think she would have gotten there faster if she was a man.
00:07:13.180
She got there faster because she was pretty and cute and relatable.
00:07:20.980
I'm not saying that's a terrible thing, but I am saying she can use her sexuality to get where she wants to go.
00:07:29.020
So if she was a man, I don't think she would have that same appeal.
00:07:32.480
Now looking at what's actually happening on the screen
00:07:38.220
And the fact of the matter is I've never been in a scenario where other men wouldn't call that guy out.
00:07:43.900
Also, why are the people around him letting him act that way?
00:07:50.300
If you're gonna act like a bad person, people are gonna call you out for the most part.
00:07:56.620
And then she pees on a wall and you see all the names of her albums that she doesn't currently own.
00:08:21.340
Now, I don't have enough legal background to know exactly if she should own her old records or not.
00:08:26.060
I don't really know what the legal ramifications of that are.
00:08:29.260
And theoretically, if you're a woman doing that, that's also pretty gross.
00:08:38.060
They wouldn't shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve
00:08:46.780
Could I be separated from my good ideas and power moves?
00:08:51.980
This next section kind of blows my mind because I'm so confused at what her point is.
00:08:57.180
She has about 10 women lying on a boat in bikinis
00:09:00.540
who have all decided that they want to hang out with this really kind of gross guy.
00:09:09.740
And I don't think it's like a societal patriarchal thing.
00:09:13.260
You're saying that the guy is the problem here.
00:09:15.580
These women shouldn't be following the lead of a bad guy.
00:09:19.740
And they're all on his boat because they want to party.
00:09:23.340
And I think it's more of a critique of the woman than it is of the men.
00:09:49.740
Then we see her as a man getting out of bed with a woman and he's already dressed
00:09:58.140
and he runs down a hallway where people are giving him high fives.
00:10:01.500
When I watched this video all I could think is that the people that I know
00:10:07.500
And the women who are hanging around with him are the problem.
00:10:12.220
The guy is the problem of course as well but he wouldn't have anybody to communicate with
00:10:23.180
Are you criticizing men or are you criticizing the women who are following him around?
00:10:28.380
I don't think that's the point of her video and I don't really want to argue that either
00:10:31.580
but that seems to be what she's putting out there.
00:10:52.620
If he's being a bad dad and women are just attracted to him because they're stupid,
00:10:56.940
I don't understand why she's criticizing women so harshly in this video.
00:11:00.940
She seems to be criticizing women much more harshly than she's criticizing men.
00:11:05.900
All of the women in this video look like they're stupid.
00:11:35.900
Then she cuts to all of these guys kind of being disgusting in a bar and that they're
00:11:53.500
all allowed to be angry but because she's a woman she's not.
00:11:56.860
Then she has a tantrum and I think it's supposed to be a throwback to Serena Williams when she had
00:12:04.540
The fact of the matter is I'm watching this video and I would criticize any man who acted like that.
00:12:09.980
We should criticize anyone who acts like a child on the tennis court.
00:12:14.060
The premise here is broken that men and women should be treated equally is true and they are
00:12:22.620
but the fact is how do you want them to be treated equally?
00:12:25.980
Do you want them to be treated and held to a higher standard?
00:12:29.660
Or do you want everyone to be treated equally and everyone can be terrible?
00:12:41.820
Wondering if I'd get that quick or if I was a man
00:13:12.940
Then it cuts to 58 years later as if she's the old man
00:13:23.500
She's critiquing this woman for marrying an old man for his money
00:13:28.060
Because she waves her big diamond at the camera as if
00:13:35.180
Honestly, I think I've seen that happen at a bunch of weddings
00:13:38.460
Where somebody's rubbed cake in the other person's face
00:13:49.580
And now we're just critiquing the old man for being gross
00:14:13.660
Was that last tick more of what you had in mind?
00:14:39.820
And women are always told they have to be sexier
00:14:50.700
Women are getting into schools at a higher rate than men
00:14:56.780
Women are getting hired at a higher rate than men
00:15:08.780
Or is she really just trying to cater to the SJW crowd?
00:15:13.500
Of course, she has to finish off by saying she did everything herself
00:15:16.700
I don't understand why we have to polarize men and women so harshly
00:15:28.620
You should hire people who know what they're doing
00:15:31.980
You've changed and you've alienated a lot of the people who used to follow you
00:15:37.420
And I know that you want to say that you're brave for coming out as a political person
00:15:54.700
I don't think your music is as good when you make it about politics
00:16:02.460
I feel happy that I am part of the greatest country in the world
