Dale Partridge - Bible Blueprint - Block Diagram of Ephesians 2_1-7

00:00:00.360 Welcome to this edition of the Bible Blueprint. My name is Dale Partridge.

00:00:03.460 Today we're going to be doing a block diagram of Ephesians 2, 1-7 of the ESV.

00:00:08.840 A block diagram is the process of observing the text.

00:00:14.220 It's one of the tools that you can use to break down a particular passage of Scripture

00:00:18.780 and understand what the literary, grammatical, syntactical structure of the text is doing.

00:00:25.840 It allows us to see the text in blocks and comprehend the grammatical structure and extract really what's happening in the text.

00:00:38.660 It allows us to see things in the text that we might not see in paragraph form.

00:00:42.460 Now, the way that we do that is we always have the main clauses to the left, and we have the developing clauses underneath the words, or underneath the word that that particular prepositional phrase is modifying.

00:00:56.440 So, I know that sounds like a lot of grammatical stuff that you might not be familiar with, but just go ahead and watch what I'm doing here, and that'll give you a breakdown.

00:01:03.980 So, verse 1, we're going to just first start breaking down the text by verses.

00:01:08.860 So I always put the verses, we're going to keep those numbers on the left-hand side.

00:01:14.840 And then once we break that down, we can break it down even further just by breaking down any punctuation.

00:01:23.180 So anytime we see a comma or a period, we're always going to have a line break.

00:01:28.740 And so it just kind of is an easy, quick cheat to get us closer to our breakdown of the text by just doing this and realizing that we have a lot more structures of sentences here.

00:01:43.340 And so we're dividing them down so we can start to see individual statements and phrases and prepositions, our prepositional phrases that allow us to better observe the text, right?

00:01:54.960 Because we want to make observations before we make interpretations.

00:01:58.740 and we want to do interpretations before we do applications.

00:02:02.500 And so this is the process of doing that.

00:02:05.840 Okay, so now we have the text here.

00:02:07.180 We're going to identify the main clauses.

00:02:09.660 And so a main clause is a subject and a verb.

00:02:16.960 And so those two things really create a main clause.

00:02:20.480 It's usually something that you can run into a room and yell

00:02:23.660 and people aren't going to think you're crazy.

00:02:26.800 For example, the main clause here in verse one is you were dead.

00:02:32.880 You were dead.

00:02:33.720 You could run in a room and say that. 0.89

00:02:35.120 You were dead.

00:02:36.820 Now, you might want to say and you were dead, but no, it's actually not the main clause

00:02:40.720 because it's just kind of an added thing here.

00:02:42.780 So what I do with that is I just move and in a couple spaces, and I want to keep you

00:02:50.720 were dead on the left-hand side because that's our main clause.

00:02:55.400 and we know that we're going to highlight our main clauses and we're going to do that

00:02:59.760 you know I could probably do that oops I deleted that right there so we'll do that once I

00:03:05.140 oh it's going to make me do it this way okay well we'll do that later once we're getting back into

00:03:10.840 the annotating with the stylus so you were dead well how were you dead again let me get my thing

00:03:19.920 here. You were dead. Where were you dead? Where was the location of your deadness? It was, you were 0.99

00:03:26.660 dead in the trespasses and sins. And so I'm going to put and over here too, because what were you

00:03:38.000 dead in? You were dead in trespasses, in the trespasses and sins. So these are all under dead.

00:03:45.960 And we know that in the trespasses, this is a preposition.

00:03:53.000 In is a preposition.

00:03:54.720 Prepositions are anything a rabbit can do with his house.

00:03:57.360 He can go in it, he can go under it, he can go around it, he can go above it, he can go

00:04:00.220 below it, he can go through it, he can go to it, right?

00:04:02.400 So you see all these things that you need to recognize these prepositions.

00:04:07.220 And so you were dead in the trespasses and sins.

00:04:10.240 You might even put trespasses and sins on the same one.

00:04:12.380 This is not, this is an art and a science.

00:04:14.460 So from, you know, from block diagram to block diagram between two expositors, you might have a little bit of a variation here.

00:04:23.440 And I might go through this a couple more times and change it, but this is just my first bluff or my first blush at it.

00:04:27.740 So let's just do it.

00:04:30.040 So verse two, you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked.

00:04:36.760 So what were you walking in?

00:04:38.240 Were you walking in your deadness?

00:04:39.540 yes, but you were walking in the trespasses and sins. So you know what I'm going to do just

00:04:47.780 because I think it makes it a little bit easier to understand here. I'm going to create trespasses

00:04:51.980 and sins, and I'm going to treat that as one thing, even though it might not be. I'll mark

00:04:58.360 that later though. But you were, you know, if you took this right here and like say that you

00:05:03.000 underlined it. Um, you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked. Um, and you

00:05:13.560 were dead. Um, you were dead. And now where were you following the course of the world? Was it in

00:05:21.280 your deadness? And you were dead following the course of this world. Uh, I think that's right.

00:05:26.940 Following the course of this world.

00:05:31.760 So you can do of this world here, right?

00:05:33.760 So you're getting this little thing.

00:05:35.580 You were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked.

00:05:39.180 You were dead following the course of this world.

00:05:42.360 You were dead following the prince of the power of the air.

00:05:50.800 Now, this is one thing here.

00:05:54.700 And I'm even going to say that the other one's one thing.

00:05:57.560 So this is what happens when you interpret live.

00:06:01.860 So when you look at this, course of this world, I think, is really one thing.

00:06:05.660 It's kind of what's called a noun clause.

00:06:07.860 And so trespasses and sins is kind of a noun clause.

00:06:11.140 Like you were dead and trespasses and sins.

00:06:13.560 It's almost like a noun.

00:06:16.320 Following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air.

00:06:20.080 These are individual things.

00:06:21.860 and you were dead doing these things and you were dead following the prince of the power of the air

00:06:27.960 so now we know the spirit is modifying prince of power of the air because we know the spirit is

00:06:35.800 talking about the prince of the power of the air and so we're following the prince of the power of

00:06:39.840 the air the spirit that is now at work where is it at work in the sons of disobedience so the

00:06:51.820 sons of disobedience we're not going to put the sons of disobedience we're going to put the sons

00:06:57.160 of disobedience really as again another noun clause and so we have what you can see here is

00:07:03.400 that you can all these are modifiers and so you can tell that this is just a modifier so you can

00:07:10.820 actually create a sentence that says and you were dead following the course of this world

00:07:17.880 You can't say, and you were dead, in which you once walked.

00:07:20.900 That doesn't make sense.

00:07:22.160 You need this modifier because this modifier here is actually modifying this modifier here,

00:07:28.560 which is modifying this main clause here.

00:07:31.140 And so you start to see the grammatical structure,

00:07:33.560 and you start to see what Paul is actually saying here.

00:07:36.620 So when you were dead in the trespasses and sins of which you once walked,

00:07:40.300 following the course of this world,

00:07:42.700 you were dead following the prince of the power of the air,

00:07:45.020 the spirit that is now at work and the sons of disobedience

00:07:48.760 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh um so did we where are we at so

00:08:01.480 and you were dead among whom we all that doesn't make sense and you were dead following the prince

00:08:06.780 of the power of the air among whom we all once lived no that doesn't make sense either so uh you

00:08:13.400 were dead following the prince of the power of the air the spirit that is now at work among whom we

00:08:18.780 all know that doesn't work either and so we're starting to see that what's going on here is

00:08:22.940 we're going to move this all the way over we're probably going to run out of space but in the

00:08:27.360 sons of disobedience among whom we all once lived among whom we all once lived

00:08:39.300 um and how do we live

00:08:43.560 in the sons of disobedience we lived how in the passions of our flesh and so we're going to move

00:08:55.880 this over here in the passions okay we might we might get it here of our it won't let me tab

00:09:05.800 further than that for some reason i usually do these diagrams in microsoft word and that's

00:09:13.220 really helpful okay passion the passions of our flesh carrying out the desires of the body and

00:09:20.780 the mind um so i think this goes here so we go in we go you were dead up here um you know all this

00:09:32.660 here, following the prince of the power of the air, that his spirit is now at work, and the sons of

00:09:36.020 disobedience. Now you go carrying out the desires of the body and the mind. Now is this sentence

00:09:45.660 here modifying sons of disobedience? So we have to look at that. Or is it modifying our flesh?

00:09:57.300 so that's what we'll have to figure out um so we're going to go in the sons of disobedience

00:10:04.180 among whom we all once lived so we go okay the spirit that is now at work in the sons of

00:10:09.020 disobedience carrying out the desires of the body and the mind it functionally works but

00:10:14.060 really is carrying out the desires of the body and the mind talking about the sons of disobedience

00:10:19.860 or is it talking about living in the passions of our flesh i think it's talking about the flesh

00:10:26.560 because it says in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body.

00:10:31.360 So I think that's really what's happening here.

00:10:33.400 Now, the dilemma that really is a bummer is that we're going to run into this room element, right?

00:10:38.600 Where you have really long run-on sentences from Paul.

00:10:41.860 So you get to go carrying out the desires, carrying out the desires.

00:10:47.980 So we're going to start back over here, okay?

00:10:50.200 And just kind of just move it over.

00:10:55.860 will it let us there we go so we're gonna have to have this kind of restart here and what i'll do

00:11:01.360 is this i'll just mark this on my end as a restart over here and put that over there like that

00:11:13.200 and so um we go back and we start going okay carrying out the desires

00:11:20.600 of what? The desires

00:11:24.200 of the body

00:11:26.620 and

00:11:29.060 the mind.

00:11:35.480 So we're already starting to see

00:11:36.760 a pretty interesting thing here, right? You were dead.

00:11:38.700 How were you dead? Well, you were dead in

00:11:40.680 three things. The trespasses

00:11:42.940 and sins in which you once walked.

00:11:44.520 You were dead following the course of this

00:11:46.800 world. You were dead following the prince of the power of the air.

00:11:48.880 and now what does it mean

00:11:51.560 to follow the principle out of the air well it means that

00:11:53.260 it's the spirit that's now at work

00:11:54.560 in who in the sons of disobedience

00:11:57.340 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our

00:11:59.340 flesh carrying out the desires of

00:12:01.340 what the body and the mind

00:12:03.160 and were by

00:12:05.180 nature

00:12:05.820 carrying out okay so this is

00:12:09.340 going to be difficult because we're on this kind of

00:12:11.140 flip-flop thing here

00:12:12.220 out of the desires

00:12:13.980 out the desires of the body and of the mind

00:12:17.180 um and i think we're here so this might also be modifying sons of disobedience let's see

00:12:28.240 because it might work if we go in the sons of disobedience yeah so i think that this is

00:12:33.080 actually modifying sons of disobedience because if you read the statement here you realize that

00:12:37.680 essentially uh this statement over here would have just kept going all the way over there

00:12:46.460 uh and then we would have moved back for this because this is modifying sons of disobedience

00:12:55.160 there and so um we'll do that right now so we have among whom we all once lived so uh the spirit

00:13:03.700 that is now at work in the sons of disobedience, and were by nature children of wrath.

00:13:16.320 So, again, are we saying that children of wrath is kind of our title, or are we saying

00:13:26.620 children

00:13:28.200 of wrath.

00:13:33.000 I don't...

00:13:34.320 I think that this is what it's saying.

00:13:36.120 I think it's saying children

00:13:37.000 of wrath that way.

00:13:40.680 Like the rest of mankind,

00:13:44.860 among whom we all once lived...

00:13:46.660 Okay, the spirit that's now in work

00:13:48.200 and the sons of disobedience,

00:13:50.180 among whom we all once lived...

00:13:52.280 let's see or yeah what's going on here is i'm gonna i'm gonna back this up because

00:14:05.440 i can so if i'm gonna say here that actually if we have children of wrath as a noun clause

00:14:13.480 children of wrath and then we can go like the rest

00:14:20.160 of mankind um so the rest of mankind there's lots of like you're starting to see these kind

00:14:32.900 of titles so i'm going to say the rest of mankind is a noun clause and children of wrath

00:14:43.920 is a noun clause so they're they're like titles for groups of people and so now you have the

00:14:51.020 situation where you go and we're by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind so

00:14:56.300 the rest of mankind is a child of wrath meaning these people who are walking out the sons the

00:15:02.540 sons of disobedience um and so now we get to a finally to another to another statement here

00:15:11.280 and so we will move down here and we go okay but god um and let's see if we can maybe make a

00:15:20.120 make this template continuous can make this continuous does it allow us to do that i feel

00:15:27.800 like it should letter tabloid continuous no doesn't do that okay that's fine all right so um but god

00:15:38.760 being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead

00:15:49.280 in our trespasses made us alive together with christ okay this is a little bit harder to

00:15:57.000 determine the main clause but the main clause here is all of this right here is just modifying

00:16:08.580 it could really go but God made us alive together with Christ and so really the main clause is going

00:16:17.200 to be a bit of a split here and so it's gonna it's gonna be like this I'm gonna actually grab

00:16:23.640 the highlighter here and just so you guys can keep your eyes on it we'll say God

00:16:29.320 um made us alive and so um it's kind of like a split main clause here that's our situation there

00:16:42.700 and so you know i'm going to do it a different way to make it a little bit easier to

00:16:46.420 for visual sake but god so we're going to push this in just a smidge

00:16:51.660 um these are all modifiers okay so but god god is being rich in mercy is modifying god

00:17:01.880 being rich how in mercy uh being rich god because of the great love okay god

00:17:11.660 uh no this isn't right because b because isn't modifying god it's modifying rich and mercy

00:17:20.080 He's rich in mercy because, so being rich in mercy because of the great love, because of the great love with which he loved us.

00:17:40.040 Because of the great love with which he loved us.

00:17:42.120 We're going to leave it like that.

00:17:43.020 But God, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive.

00:18:03.520 And how did he make us alive? Together with Christ.

00:18:07.800 So we have this situation here where we have to now go, okay, we're going to highlight the main clause there.

00:18:16.980 We're going to highlight this part of our main clause here.

00:18:20.460 So God made us alive.

00:18:22.080 That's the main clause.

00:18:23.100 That's what happened here.

00:18:24.600 And we can move up here. 0.83

00:18:26.080 And again, we can go up here and go, okay, you were dead.

00:18:29.520 That's our main clause.

00:18:31.200 So now we're starting to see the whole thing, two, one through seven.

00:18:34.360 We're starting to realize the main clauses are this.

00:18:36.280 you were dead, God made us alive.

00:18:41.680 That's really the main grammatical and literary structure of Paul's argument here.

00:18:49.260 So now let's go back to here, made us alive together with Christ.

00:18:55.420 By grace, you have been saved.

00:18:58.160 this you know you have this m dash that's right here uh that essentially could be the start of

00:19:07.380 a new sentence and so you might have another clause here every sentence in english has a

00:19:12.880 main clause and when you have an m dash it really could be another sentence so um we might say by

00:19:21.700 grace you have been saved could be you have been saved could be a new main clause but let's look

00:19:31.540 at this real quick is by grace you have been saved modifying something else God made you alive

00:19:38.920 I think we can go by grace you have been saved so you made us alive together with Christ made

00:19:47.880 us alive by grace. You have been saved and made us alive and raised us up. Where do we get raised

00:19:59.300 up? Raised us up with him and seated us and seated us with him. Okay. Raise us up. Let's

00:20:17.620 let's do this let's do this let's go raised him up with him and seated us with him

00:20:21.820 raised us up with him in the heavenly places so we need to figure out does in the heavenly places

00:20:33.800 modify this sentence and raised us up with him in the heavenly places in christ jesus

00:20:40.520 or and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places.

00:20:46.440 I think that it's this seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

00:20:57.700 So that.

00:21:00.760 So we go seated us with him.

00:21:05.280 I think we're here and raised us up with him so that.

00:21:10.520 In the coming ages, he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness.

00:21:40.520 of his grace in kindness toward us. How was it toward us? It was toward us in Christ Jesus.

00:21:52.720 Okay, so now we have a block diagram. So we have a diagram here that needs a little bit of love

00:22:03.740 and needs a little bit more of explanation. So we're going to go through and I'm going to

00:22:07.240 annotate it now and kind of circle what's going on. And hopefully this will help us kind of have

00:22:11.960 a better grasp here. So we have our main clauses. We know that's there. And that's good. Now let's

00:22:19.660 find our, our developing clauses. And I usually do the developing clauses in green. And so,

00:22:29.700 and you were dead and the trespasses and sins in which you once. So this is kind of a hard color

00:22:35.660 to see, isn't it? I'm trying to find a different color that's a little bit brighter, maybe.

00:22:43.700 It's a little bit different than the, all right, I'll use pink. How about that?

00:22:51.380 In which you once walked. Once is a time element, right? So it's, you once did this,

00:23:01.560 this is a temporal clause. And so, you know, we can, we can mark that right there. Not with a

00:23:08.340 highlighter, but with this, and just say that it's a, it's a temporal, because it deals with time.

00:23:19.460 Temporal clause. It's also, it's also past tense. You might want to mark that as past tense.

00:23:30.000 okay we are going to find our other verbs here our other clauses here following the course of

00:23:37.480 this world following the prince of the power of the air the spirit that is now at work and the

00:23:40.720 sons of disobedience among whom we all again once so we're going to want to highlight that

00:23:46.980 lived and the passions of our flesh carrying out the desires of our body our desires of the body

00:23:56.760 and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind.

00:24:04.420 But God, being rich in mercy, because, so because is a causal clause.

00:24:11.700 So we'll just write here, causal.

00:24:16.500 The grounds of his great love is, or I should say, he's being rich in mercy.

00:24:24.700 the grounds for his mercy is what the great love with which he loved us the reason he's merciful

00:24:31.140 toward us is because he loved us now we need to know who the us is if you've read ephesians

00:24:39.000 you've been following along you know the us is the elect the chosen the ones that he predestined

00:24:45.740 before the foundation of the world so we have now um a causal clause there of the great love

00:24:53.000 which he loved us even when we were dead in our trespasses so even when is another another clause

00:25:03.500 and this is called i should label this for you guys because this is a really important one

00:25:09.960 um let's see where can i label this maybe i'll go down here so this is called a

00:25:16.240 concessive, I don't see how I can spell this, maybe it's C-E, concessive clause.

00:25:28.860 Okay, a concessive clause introduces something shocking.

00:25:33.080 So, Christ Jesus died for us even while we were sinners, or even while we were sinners, Christ died for us.

00:25:40.900 You know, he died for that man even though he was a murderer.

00:25:46.240 it's introducing something shocking.

00:25:48.820 So it's saying being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us,

00:25:52.240 even when we were dead in our trespasses, God did this.

00:25:55.540 So it's introducing something shocking.

00:25:58.520 And so you need to take note of that.

00:26:00.100 If you miss that, it's an important part of the structure and what Paul is trying to communicate.

00:26:06.220 And so, yeah, so you wanted to identify that.

00:26:10.680 Made us alive together with Christ.

00:26:12.720 By grace, you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

00:26:23.260 Now we have another major clause here.

00:26:26.280 So this is so that this is your classic, classic purpose clause.

00:26:34.940 Purpose clause.

00:26:37.360 Whenever it says so that in your Bible, you need to figure out what's it talking about.

00:26:42.080 So he says right here, he made us alive.

00:26:48.260 So that in the coming ages, so we can either figure it out.

00:26:51.100 He made us up.

00:26:52.200 So again, we need to determine is so that modifying made us alive or is so that modifying made us alive together with Christ.

00:27:02.140 By grace, you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him so that he might show.

00:27:08.820 So all those things he's done for us, he hasn't just made us alive, but he's actually done it together with Christ.

00:27:15.660 He's done it by grace.

00:27:18.680 He's raised us up.

00:27:20.260 He's seated us with him.

00:27:22.360 And he's done all those things.

00:27:23.880 And he's seated us up with him in the heavenly places in Christ.

00:27:26.840 Why has he done all of that stuff?

00:27:28.480 well so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches uh of his grace

00:27:37.040 in kindness toward us in christ jesus so when i see something like this i go immeasurable

00:27:42.640 riches um of it actually i'm going to say

00:27:48.680 this is the whole purpose um of why he oh it's giving me straight lines

00:27:58.820 He's doing that for us.

00:28:01.440 He might show the immeasurable riches of his grace.

00:28:04.280 This is like, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, right?

00:28:07.080 You need to like circle that and you go, wow, okay, this is purpose.

00:28:15.640 This is the purpose of why he saved us, right?

00:28:19.060 Is that he made us alive so that in the coming ages, he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace.

00:28:24.080 okay now we again now my these are just observations these are some of my interpretations

00:28:31.520 but you know i usually will spend several days playing with one of these before i really start

00:28:37.360 to make really hard interpretations but now we want to go through and we go okay let's uh

00:28:43.900 let's find um let me get another color that would stand out in some way is there other colors here

00:28:52.720 There we go.

00:28:53.980 Let's grab this green.

00:28:55.780 Let's mark the pronouns because we want to know the antecedents to the pronouns.

00:29:01.080 And you, right?

00:29:02.980 So we want to know who is the you.

00:29:05.300 Were we all dead?

00:29:07.220 Were, you know, I think we're all dead because he talks about here, among whom we all, oops.

00:29:17.440 I'm going to get better at this.

00:29:18.540 So, among whom we all once lived.

00:29:22.800 So, he's talking to you first, and then he's mentioning all after that.

00:29:29.720 And so, that's kind of a big deal.

00:29:32.580 And you know what?

00:29:33.100 I really wanted to stay consistent, so I'm going to grab that green and just do it in green.

00:29:37.380 So, you can see that here.

00:29:39.540 There we go.

00:29:40.760 So, there's a transition from you to then we all.

00:29:45.580 There's a little something we want to notice there.

00:29:47.020 So, let's go back through and find out, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, I want to know more about this guy.

00:29:56.480 Is this the enemy? Is this Satan?

00:29:59.720 The spirit, I want to know this one, too.

00:30:02.180 So, we want to figure out who is the spirit that is now at work in the sense of disobedience?

00:30:05.920 Who is the prince of the power of the air?

00:30:07.240 Well, we know that it's Satan, but if you didn't know that because you hadn't studied theology, you'd want to figure out who these people are and who is the spirit.

00:30:17.020 So the sons of disobedience, right? Sons of disobedience is not saying that we are paternally or maternally sons of disobedience. You know, in the Bible, it talks about sons of thunder or sons of famine.

00:30:33.700 so it's talking about its relationship with or its connection to that thing so it could be

00:30:44.980 disobedience or thunder you know it's it's in relationship to and so um we want to just mark

00:30:54.080 that among whom whom another one we all all once lived and the passions of our flesh carrying out

00:31:04.860 the desires of the body and the mind and were by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind

00:31:14.700 and so we'll make some more observations here soon but God being rich in mercy because of the

00:31:23.480 great love which with with which he so we know that it's God loved us even when we were dead

00:31:31.400 in our trespasses made us alive he didn't make everybody alive but he made us alive

00:31:38.640 together with Christ by grace you have been saved and raised us up with him with who with Christ

00:31:50.340 So, you know, we can go raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

00:31:59.940 So that in the coming ages, he. Right. So who's the he? Well, it's it's God, the father.

00:32:06.860 So we want to make sure that we make that connection going, whoop, God the Father, so that he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace, God the Father, in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

00:32:26.380 So it's really important to find your pronouns because you're trying to identify the antecedent to the pronoun.

00:32:32.340 The antecedent is the object or subject, I should say, the subject of the antecedent.

00:32:40.800 So, you know, Bill hit the ball, and then he ran and got it.

00:32:47.160 Well, who's the he? It's Bill, right?

00:32:49.160 So we want to just make sure that we're marking them so we can identify.

00:32:52.640 Sometimes you misattribute something that God the Father did to Jesus,

00:32:56.520 or sometimes you misattribute something that the Spirit did that actually the Father did,

00:33:00.080 Or sometimes you misattribute something that God's done for the elect, the chosen, to everybody or all humanity, when in reality it's not something that's given to all humanity, but it's actually given just to the church.

00:33:15.860 And so you want to always at least identify them so that you can talk about them before you make an interpretation.

00:33:22.620 the next thing i want to do is i'm going to probably mark the verbs and i want to know

00:33:31.140 let's just say we take this purple here i want to mark the verbs okay so in the trespasses in

00:33:38.280 which it's walked okay we walked in these verb in this this uh sinful nature we were following

00:33:44.680 and you think about you know following christ and then following the course of this world

00:33:49.440 I think of the contrast of follow me and what's going on there.

00:33:53.240 So I'm just going to mark that with just kind of the idea of follow me.

00:34:04.760 Jesus says that all the time.

00:34:07.460 And that's kind of in contrast there.

00:34:10.300 The prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work.

00:34:14.640 And so, you know, at work, how is it at work?

00:34:19.440 You know, I just want to know how.

00:34:24.880 In the sons of disobedience, among whom we all once lived, we lived that way.

00:34:31.980 Now, this is also past tense.

00:34:36.740 I want to make sure that I want to recognize that.

00:34:40.740 So it's talking about tense.

00:34:43.580 Guys, I'm going to erase that just so I can not be so ashamed.

00:34:49.440 Past tense.

00:34:51.780 In the passions of our flesh, passions of our flesh.

00:34:55.380 So again, this is, yeah, passions of our flesh is carrying or carrying out the desires of the body and the mind.

00:35:09.280 And we're by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind.

00:35:12.840 Oh, how about I don't do that?

00:35:14.120 But God, being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us,

00:35:21.940 even when we were dead in our trespasses, together, he made us alive together with Christ.

00:35:30.300 And by grace you have been saved and raised up.

00:35:32.860 I mean, again, I'm not hitting every single verb.

00:35:35.100 I'm just trying to, like, make sure we mark these ones.

00:35:37.780 Raise us up with whom seated us.

00:35:40.340 So I think about seated.

00:35:42.880 Why is Christ seated?

00:35:44.120 Well, we're rested.

00:35:48.840 We're resting in Christ.

00:35:51.020 You know, the work is done, right?

00:35:52.400 I think about it is finished.

00:35:59.720 Okay, seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

00:36:02.300 so that in the coming ages he might show,

00:36:08.400 ooh, that's not my highlighter,

00:36:11.780 He might show the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

00:36:15.920 So marking those verbs is important.

00:36:18.680 Now I'm going to start making some more interpretive observations that I think might be helpful.

00:36:24.400 And we get to go, okay, so, and you were, I'm going to take my yellow here, my yellow here. 0.86

00:36:33.960 And I'm going to go, okay, you were dead.

00:36:40.000 So meaning that this is past, but now we're alive, right?

00:36:45.040 So there's some element here of you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked,

00:36:58.000 following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air.

00:37:02.120 So again, I'm seeing kind of like one, two, three, spirit of the now at work in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and of the mind, and were by nature.

00:37:20.160 Again, so we got another one of these were, were, so we were dead.

00:37:24.920 We were by nature children of wrath.

00:37:27.240 So I want to kind of connect those there.

00:37:32.120 You were dead, and you were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

00:37:38.500 And I missed a giant clause earlier.

00:37:40.540 I can't believe I missed this.

00:37:41.840 So we're going to go back to our green real quick.

00:37:45.620 I think it was this green, right?

00:37:47.940 But, okay, this is a huge clause.

00:37:54.500 This is called a contrast clause.

00:37:57.560 And so we're going to just say contrast.

00:38:02.120 okay but but god those are two two great great words so we're going to go back to our

00:38:11.800 our yellow here and start making some observations but god great words so you were dead

00:38:20.920 you were by nature children of wrath but god what a beautiful element there but god

00:38:29.260 being rich in mercy because of the great love with which he loved us.

00:38:35.620 And this is, we know that he loved us because it talks about this in Ephesians 1.

00:38:46.500 Even when we were dead in our trespasses made us alive.

00:38:51.540 And so this is a great, a great thing.

00:38:55.000 What does it mean that we were spiritually dead?

00:38:57.880 if we were alive, we were spiritually dead, I'm going to say this, if I can write tiny here, is

00:39:03.220 born again. So he made us alive. He gave us new life. So I'm thinking spiritual

00:39:14.660 resurrection

00:39:18.740 resurrection

00:39:22.300 two hours

00:39:23.220 okay so born again we had spiritual resurrection because we weren't

00:39:29.200 physically dead we were spiritually dead but we

00:39:32.940 have been now made alive spiritual resurrection

00:39:35.560 together with christ made us alive and he made us together so we're i'm going

00:39:41.860 I circle this because I want to talk about union, right?

00:39:44.480 Everything's in Christ, in whom, in God.

00:39:48.900 If we think about the block diagram that I did for chapter one,

00:39:54.640 we're raised together with Christ.

00:39:56.200 So I want to just kind of mark doctrine of union.

00:40:08.060 By grace you have been saved.

00:40:10.360 okay this is this is past tense now it's you're saved now you've you've been saved uh the the saving

00:40:24.340 is done

00:40:29.260 okay and have been raised up and raised us up again this is this has been

00:40:40.360 done and seated us with him that's been done in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus

00:40:47.840 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace

00:40:55.160 in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus and there's that doctrine of union

00:41:01.200 constantly we're in Christ so we have a little bit of a structure here we're starting to see

00:41:08.940 that if we do a circle and summarize at this point, we can go to our red, and we can go,

00:41:15.340 okay, well, this is clearly one thought here, right? And that's one element. And then if we

00:41:29.600 go down here, we know that we have, oops, we don't need to do mankind. Mankind should have

00:41:36.880 it up with the other one. Let's go. Oh, you can be in there. And then we have this one over here. 0.98

00:41:45.340 Just like that. So we have that as a second one. So we have really, you were dead, but God.

00:41:57.960 And so if we came down here and we wanted to create a exegetical outline, and we might not even have three points, you know, who you were.

00:42:17.480 and then you might want to do do we want to go any deeper into that we could you know you could

00:42:30.520 put sub points under here right a b c right who you were um who you are now

00:42:45.160 you can do that and if you wanted to even make this so that its own thing you could

00:42:51.620 kind of do that

00:42:53.820 and then you can kind of make for what

00:42:59.800 purpose you can make this prettier if you wanted to preach it as three things that kind of went

00:43:09.060 along together but you really start to have a little bit of a structure here because under your

00:43:13.180 who you were you really have if you wanted to do it you have those three points uh you know you go

00:43:22.320 well your a would be dead uh your b sorry your b would be following you know the world

00:43:34.940 And your C would be following Satan.

00:43:43.200 And you're starting to get a bit of a structure for your exegetical outline.

00:43:49.420 And if you go, you know, who you are now, come down here, and you can go, well, who are you now?

00:43:55.200 Well, you're alive.

00:43:56.340 um and you are let's see um with christ um you know seated

00:44:10.200 with christ and so you're starting to get this whole thing and again if you wanted to go for

00:44:19.720 what purpose. You could start adding, you know, immeasurable, immeasurable,

00:44:29.560 and then, you know, kindness. You could start getting a little bit of a structure for

00:44:38.020 Bible study or sermon or whatever it might be. But now you've observed the text and you want

00:44:43.780 to sit on this for a little while, and you want to do some word studies again. I want to see

00:44:50.260 a word study on sons of disobedience. I want to see a word study on prince of the power of the

00:44:55.580 air, you know, the spirit that is now at work. I want to see these things. I want to know what

00:45:00.780 it means to follow. What does that really look like? Live in the passions of our flesh, care

00:45:06.180 to the desires of the body and the mind, and we're by nature children of wrath. This is, you know,

00:45:10.100 the bad news, right? Bad news. And what makes the good news so good? The bad news was so bad.

00:45:20.340 And so you kind of want to do like a contrast to the good news, which is the gospel. And that's

00:45:26.480 kind of what's going on here. You were this way, but now you're this way. It's bad news and good

00:45:31.700 news. So Paul is really telling us who we were before Christ and how bad it was. So I think 0.54

00:45:39.820 about this and you just go, wow, this is, this is, you know, if you just circle here and you just go

00:45:47.660 bad. And when you think about how bad it was, the worse it was, the more you appreciate

00:45:57.800 the good news, right? So, you know, if someone rescues you from falling

00:46:06.940 off of a step stool, you're going to appreciate them for rescuing you from a fall off the step

00:46:15.040 stool. But if someone rescues you from falling off the edge of the Grand Canyon,

00:46:20.000 then you're going to be have a greater degree of gratitude for your rescuer in the latter example

00:46:30.880 and so again the bad news is real bad which makes the good news um you know this whole thing over

00:46:38.620 here good right that's very good and so you want to make sure you're contrasting who we were

00:46:45.840 and who we are now and showing the gospel in all of that.

00:46:51.080 And so hopefully that was helpful.

00:46:53.360 Walking you guys through that passage of scripture,
