00:00:00.000 By God's grace, we continue through Genesis, and I plan to move actually quickly through Genesis, or at least that was my plan.

00:00:15.040 I'm trying to get larger portions of text, but last week we had two verses, verses 14 and 15 of chapter 3, and this week we get a whopping one verse.

00:00:24.360 We're going to go through verse 16 today, and this is part of a three-part series that

00:00:32.380 I titled, God's Curses on the Serpent and Judgments on the Sexes.

00:00:39.980 Now, if you were here last week, you remember that we studied God's curse upon the serpent,

00:00:47.240 where we saw in the darkest moment of human history, the fall of man,

00:00:54.580 we see God concealing the greatest promise, the first messianic promise,

00:01:01.420 the protovangelium, the first gospel right there in Genesis 3.15.

00:01:09.920 We also learned about the serpent's sentence of humiliation to lick the dust on its belly.

00:01:17.240 We saw how God relocated the enmity that was between him and man.

00:01:24.820 And he located that enmity between the woman's seed and the serpent's seed.

00:01:32.060 And we traced that spiritual, those two spiritual lines or two spiritual seeds that run through history.

00:01:39.480 And we saw how it ultimately manifests in the ultimate seed, Jesus Christ.

00:01:47.240 And we also saw how that Jesus becomes the new Adam, the new and better Adam, the new humanity.

00:01:56.920 And out of his side, through his resurrection, when water and blood flows out, his church, just like Eve was pulled out of Adam's rib,

00:02:07.120 we see the church being pulled out of Jesus' side.

00:02:10.440 And this beautiful realization that we have a new Adam and a new Eve.

00:02:16.300 And in the same way that Adam and Eve were called to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth,

00:02:22.160 we see Christ and his bride being fruitful and multiplying and filling the earth.

00:02:28.400 And so lots of beautiful parallels that were happening there.

00:02:31.940 Now today we move on from the curse on the serpent to the judgment on the woman.

00:02:40.380 And so very important text, especially in our generation.

00:02:45.360 This sermon is titled, The Fall, Feminism, and the Fight for Order.

00:02:51.720 And the text says, 0.72

00:02:54.160 To the woman, he said, I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing.

00:03:00.400 In pain, you shall bring forth children. 0.99

00:03:04.640 Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.

00:03:11.500 Now, first, I want you to notice a few things.

00:03:14.680 One is God doesn't curse Eve or Adam.

00:03:20.380 We always say that phrase, the curse of the fall.

00:03:23.780 He doesn't curse Eve or Adam.

00:03:26.000 He only curses the serpent.

00:03:28.480 So it's a very important distinction to make.

00:03:31.980 He pronounces judgment on the sexes, consequences for their sin, but he does not curse them.

00:03:40.540 Now, Eve was made to be the mother of all the living.

00:03:45.800 That is the title that she received from Adam.

00:03:49.940 But now, childbearing will have multiplied pain.

00:03:55.280 Childbearing will have multiplied pain.

00:03:57.060 She was created to be a helper. 0.92

00:03:59.920 But now, we will see that she struggles with insubordination.

00:04:05.300 In other words, Adam and Eve are not cursed, but their callings and their natures are now frustrated because of the fall.

00:04:16.520 Because of the fall.

00:04:18.060 Second, I want you to notice that the text refers to her as the woman.

00:04:23.880 To the woman, he said.

00:04:26.520 He doesn't call her by her name, Eve.

00:04:31.560 He calls her by woman.

00:04:34.040 Now, this is significant because God's words are not directed to Eve alone,

00:04:38.880 but they're actually directed to the entire feminine sex.

00:04:44.700 In the same way, the serpent possessed by Satan,

00:04:50.260 you know, we see the serpent, this one serpent possessed by Satan,

00:04:55.260 is cursed, and it curses all serpents.

00:04:58.740 In the same way that in the way that God pronounces a judgment on the woman,

00:05:05.540 it's not just to that one woman, but to all women.

00:05:10.360 So she essentially becomes a representative of the feminine sex. 0.86

00:05:17.140 Our first parents essentially were corrupted. 0.99

00:05:20.660 And everything that comes from those corrupted parents is handed down to their children and descendants.

00:05:28.980 In the same way that a seed, if a seed is corrupted, we know that the branches and the leaves and the fruit is also corrupted. 0.65

00:05:38.780 So in the same way, ladies, that Eve was corrupted, you are corrupted. 0.85

00:05:45.380 it. Now, third, some interpret these judgments as additional consequences, not mentioned

00:05:55.360 originally by God. And it's kind of a fascinating thing to look at. In Genesis 2.17, God says to

00:06:01.780 Adam, in the day you eat of it, you shall surely die. That's all we get from God. He doesn't talk

00:06:08.520 about all of these other things, the childbearing and pain and the insubordination. He just warns

00:06:14.960 them about this one thing of death. Now, I don't see these as extra penalties that God did not

00:06:23.000 mention. I see these as extensions of death. They are extensions of death. In a world untouched by

00:06:30.820 death, where sin has not entered, there would be no pain, there would be no sorrow, there would be

00:06:36.000 no loss, there would be no insubordination or chaos. But once death entered into the world

00:06:42.760 through sin, pain naturally follows. Chaos naturally follows. Pain is a fruit of a dying

00:06:56.360 creation. Okay, I want you to catch this for a second. C.S. Lewis, in his book, The Problem of

00:07:03.900 pain said, quote, pain is unmistakable evil. Every man knows that something is wrong when he is being

00:07:17.540 hurt. Every man knows that something is wrong when he is being hurt. In other words, pain is a reminder

00:07:26.820 of sin, which is a reminder of our need for a Savior. Pain. Every time you feel it, it's a

00:07:36.800 reminder of sin. Every time you're uncomfortable, every time you wake up with aches and pains,

00:07:43.280 every time you must go to the doctor, every time you're sick, every time you're emotionally hurt,

00:07:49.300 It's a reminder of sin, and it is a reminder of our need for redemption.

00:07:58.320 God says to Eve, to the woman, I should say, 0.83

00:08:04.020 I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing. 0.99

00:08:07.340 In pain you shall bring forth children. 0.98

00:08:11.960 Now you might be wondering, well, since God says he's going to be multiplying her pain,

00:08:18.240 was there some form of pain before the fall?

00:08:23.680 I mean, does it mean that,

00:08:24.980 like, is he saying that there was pain in Eden,

00:08:27.760 that he'll just be multiplying it now?

00:08:30.580 No, I think when you look at the Hebrew,

00:08:32.820 the phrase in the Hebrew is an idiom,

00:08:34.540 and it means multiplying, I will multiply.

00:08:37.040 It's a way to say I'm going to intensify.

00:08:40.360 It's not referring to pain that already existed.

00:08:44.480 It's referring to a new reality of suffering

00:08:48.020 that was just introduced by sin and he's going to multiply it.

00:08:54.300 It's not just that it's been introduced, it's also going to be multiplied.

00:09:00.700 The same Hebrew word for pain is actually used in the very next verse for Adam

00:09:06.000 when it says God tells Adam that he will eat from the ground in pain.

00:09:11.180 It might not translate that in your English translation, but in the Hebrew it's the same word.

00:09:15.720 And so, what we see here is that both men and women now experience pain connected to their primary callings.

00:09:27.320 Think about that.

00:09:32.740 We, women, have a primary calling of raising children, bearing children, and now it's painful.

00:09:41.900 And men have a primary calling of working for provision, and now it's painful.

00:09:51.880 There are different types of pain.

00:09:53.840 One is physical, one is often long-lasting and difficult, overbearing for men.

00:10:03.340 But they are painful.

00:10:05.780 Now, before sin, God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply and to fill the earth.

00:10:13.800 A task that would have been very joyous and glorious and easy.

00:10:19.780 But now, instead of multiplying with ease, God declares that their fruitfulness will come through pain.

00:10:27.220 It'll be painful and it'll be difficult.

00:10:29.980 now ladies i don't think that it's just talking about the moment of birth

00:10:36.380 i believe that this this word when you see it in the hebrew and you understand what it's talking

00:10:40.560 about it's talking about conception all the way through child rearing is painful delivery included

00:10:49.720 another dimension of this that i think few people pay attention to 0.52

00:10:56.360 is the consequence of this judgment upon women is that it results in fewer children being born. 1.00

00:11:09.080 It really does. Let me explain.

00:11:11.920 Modern studies have shown that tokophobia, it's the fear of having children because of pain,

00:11:19.300 is somewhere above 10% among women and the anxieties and fears surrounding the experience

00:11:28.140 of childbirth probably go into around 25 to 30%. Very common. And in fact, it actually does

00:11:36.980 influence their decision to delay or withhold pregnancy altogether. And so we are starting to

00:11:42.080 see that these consequences not only bring about

00:11:45.820 death, but they also limit life.

00:11:50.680 So it's, there's massive consequences 1.00

00:11:53.820 to this one thing given to women. 1.00

00:11:59.440 I don't know how many women I've heard that have had

00:12:02.140 a very traumatic birth, and the fear

00:12:06.140 keeps them from having more kids.

00:12:08.620 that a traumatic birth in which they almost died by pain because of this judgment and they now fear

00:12:18.500 having more children as a result of it so again these consequences are not just about death

00:12:24.640 entering the world but these consequences also limit life the world will be much different every

00:12:31.260 family would be having 10 to 20 children maybe more 34 i don't even know would there be a limit

00:12:38.060 I don't know, there would be a massive multiplication of children in a world without fallenness.

00:12:46.740 G.K. Chesterton once said,

00:12:48.500 Civilizations fail when they forget obvious truths.

00:12:56.060 Now, I think we live in a generation where we've forgotten many obvious truths.

00:13:00.320 And I want to talk about that for a minute.

00:13:02.000 because the consequences given to Adam and Eve

00:13:04.720 make their God-given purposes more painful,

00:13:09.480 the text also reveals their distinct masculine and feminine identities.

00:13:14.400 And I want you to pay attention to this

00:13:15.460 because this is another great way to argue for the traditional family.

00:13:25.400 God's discipline only strikes where it hurts.

00:13:35.000 where there is responsibility god did not make work hard for woman because she was not designed

00:13:43.340 to work the ground not that she can't do it she's not designed for it in the same way that men are

00:13:49.620 and you know what he did not make child rearing hard for the man because you know what god did

00:13:57.440 not make men specifically for child-rearing. Not that we can't help and do it, but it is not our

00:14:04.360 primary calling. These consequences reveal their roles and responsibilities. It's fundamentals.

00:14:16.400 So in a world where women are often lost in the pursuit of masculine provision, 1.00

00:14:22.400 and where men are increasingly softened into effeminate domestication.

00:14:30.700 This passage reminds us of a fundamental truth.

00:14:35.820 Women were made to nurture and to raise children and bring forth life.

00:14:41.840 Men were made to labor and provide sustenance for their families.

00:14:45.700 Those are the primary callings. 0.94

00:14:46.940 It's right here in the curse.

00:14:48.860 It communicates identity and structure and goodness and order.

00:14:54.700 Now, it's remarkable that we live in a time that we have to communicate obvious truths,

00:15:01.560 not just communicate them, actually fight for them.

00:15:06.320 People wonder why I fight feminism so often in my personal ministry. 0.88

00:15:10.000 It's because the sexual chaos and disorder among men and women right now 0.94

00:15:15.280 has brought such significant pain to our country and to our families and to our nation that we must 0.63

00:15:22.500 fight for God's order. It is a biblical thing. If we don't fight for it as pastors, who will?

00:15:29.140 Who will? If I'm not out there talking about these things and the other pastors out there

00:15:35.160 in the world talking about these things, who's going to? The Buddhists? The Hindus? Who? Nobody. 1.00

00:15:44.320 And so you have to understand that the men and pastors that are speaking about these topics are biblical topics.

00:15:55.120 They're within the purview of the gospel.

00:15:58.160 They're within the purview of what is righteous and right.

00:16:04.520 Now, the second part of verse 15 says this.

00:16:08.020 It says, your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you.

00:16:14.320 Now, first, it's important to note that God's pronouncement upon the woman isn't causing her to sin.

00:16:25.880 I'm going to explain this.

00:16:28.320 God is not saying to Eve, your desire shall be for your husband.

00:16:32.420 It's not saying like that is a command, like you should do that.

00:16:36.700 Your desire shall be for your husband.

00:16:38.480 There are people who interpret it that way.

00:16:40.260 no it's it's saying because of sin your desires will now be bent toward insubordination and we

00:16:49.480 know that because we can define the hebrew word he's describing the effect of sin on her nature

00:16:56.400 ladies this is the description of your of the effect of the fall on your nature the word desire

00:17:06.840 in the Hebrew is for controlling

00:17:10.360 or dominating. And we can see it more clearly

00:17:14.540 if you even look to the next chapter in chapter 4

00:17:18.380 verse 7. It's where God is speaking to Cain

00:17:21.880 and you have the same exact word in Hebrew being

00:17:26.400 used. And he says, sin is crouching

00:17:30.540 at the door and its desire is for you, but you must master it.

00:17:34.280 So you have this picture of sin lurking, and its desire is to control Cain.

00:17:44.640 Its desire is to dominate Cain, and God says, you must master it. 0.62

00:17:52.980 Now, experientially and pastorally, it's not so much that women want to dominate husbands, 0.87

00:18:02.200 though that can be a reality. But more often in our generation, it's that women want to live 0.94

00:18:09.940 independent of them. Women want to live independent of men. And I believe that's the heart of what we 0.67

00:18:18.380 all know as the women's liberation movement. What are women trying to be liberated from?

00:18:25.220 men that is what they were trying to be liberated from it is what they are trying

00:18:31.440 today to be liberated from the authority of their fathers the authority of their husbands

00:18:40.280 and so like cain's need to master sin a husband now has a need to rule his wife that's the parallel

00:18:54.540 Now, as I mentioned last week, God uses poetic justice.

00:19:01.320 And this is important because I want you to see what God is doing here.

00:19:06.320 Essentially, God is saying, all right, all right, Eve, Adam,

00:19:12.800 if the woman wants to rule and the man wants to follow and listen, 0.85

00:19:20.960 then the fall will now amplify both of those things.

00:19:29.140 That's essentially what we're seeing in this judgment. 0.98

00:22:56.360 maliciousness but i think if you read into it a tone of righteousness it can be said equally

00:23:04.500 and true. Now, one theologian described the tone that I think is trying to be communicated in this

00:23:12.300 judgment. He says, quote, what was once marked in the garden by to love and to cherish

00:23:18.120 has in the fall become to rule and to dominate. Now, this can actually be seen in history.

00:24:55.680 passive men and feminist women now we have a crisis i'm going to tell you about a crisis

00:25:10.200 According to Pew Research, in 1993, 76% of 18-year-old men

00:25:18.620 said they wanted to be married, compared to 74% in 2023.

00:25:25.960 That was a very small decline, 76%, 74%, 2% drop in 30 years.

00:25:30.780 but among women the number the number plummeted from 83 percent in 1993 to 61 percent in 2023
