00:03:04.600Noah received that from Enosh. Enosh received firsthand testimony from Adam. And so over
00:03:11.6802,048 years, you could span firsthand direct testimonies over only four people. It's an
00:03:20.020incredible thing to see how God used that in these genealogies. Now, Cain's and Seth's
00:03:27.640multiplication in chapters 4 and 5, they showed us how the moral conditions were ripening for
00:03:36.920God's judgment to come in the flood. And so it was this escalation of sin that is leading up
00:03:44.040to the narrative of the flood. Now, today we are in chapter 6 and verses 1 through 4 really begin
00:03:54.580as even 1 through 8, but begin as a transition. It kind of piggybacks off of chapter 5 and chapter
00:04:04.7404 on this great escalation of sin prior to the judgment of the flood. Now, this passage is
00:04:14.340known for its theological complexity, its multiple interpretations. I studied it as extensive as one
00:04:23.940could in the period of time that I had. I have also studied it in the past. And so this is one
00:04:30.300of those passages of scripture that you might have heard a sermon on before. I've listened to
00:04:34.480a few podcasts about it before. I've read a handful of commentaries on it. And I do feel
00:04:40.060fairly confident in the position that I hold. And I think that most of church history holds
00:04:44.220the position that I hold. The passage is difficult to interpret because it has three categories of
00:04:50.760people that are difficult to identify. The first is the sons of God. Who are the sons of God?
00:04:59.720The second is the daughters of men. Who are the daughters of men specifically? And the third is0.78
00:05:06.220the Nephilim. What are, who is the Nephilim? Throughout church history, several interpretations
00:05:13.780again have been offered on this. Today I'm going to walk through most of the prominent views.
00:05:18.820So you'll hear of really there's three views and really it comes down to about two views.
00:05:24.760And then there's really one major view that I believe is held throughout most of church history, especially in the early church.
00:05:33.620Ultimately, this text, it really is this final escalation of rebellion and biological disorder.
00:05:43.080Okay, so you got to understand there's a final escalation of moral rebellion and biological disorder before the divine judgment of the flood.
00:08:29.380So he wants to take this desire of multiplication and he wants to extinguish the seed of Christ by entangling the demonic realm with the seed of the woman.0.58
00:08:41.140So that's really the big picture is that you have this desire of Satan to entangle the demonic realm with the seed of the woman, with human biology, in order to extinguish the promised seed.0.70
00:08:56.100And again, this is more battle over the war
00:18:58.220it also speaks of these fallen angels saying,
00:19:00.660And quote, and the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling.0.50
00:19:10.020He has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of that great day, just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise, so he's connecting the demons and Sodom and Gomorrah, indulged in sexual immorality.
00:19:28.480and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing punishment of eternal fire.
00:19:36.260Okay, so the Bible speaks of angels in these two verses, A, who left their domain. They left their
00:19:43.160domain. It actually uses the word abode in many translations. They left their abode, they left
00:19:48.040their home. B, they sinned uniquely in some way. And C, they likewise indulged in sexual immorality
00:19:59.800and pursued unnatural desires. So we have evidence in the New Testament that confirms this, that we
00:20:05.340have essentially angels that left where they were supposed to be, came down, committed some sort of
00:20:12.700unique sin that was sexually immoral. And that essentially, I think, gives us enough ground
00:20:17.920to exegetically connect the possibility that angels came down in the form of man and slept
00:20:24.500with women. And that's what we can take here. So I believe that we do have an embodiment,
00:20:32.960again, whether it's the form, whether it's possession. And what was the purpose again?
00:20:40.960Well, of course, if the war is about a seed,
00:20:44.900if it's all about preventing the seed from being born,
00:20:49.980then this is a great way to biologically corrupt
00:20:53.120and extinguish the possibility of this seed being born.
00:20:58.740In many ways, this actually mirrors the same type of pattern
00:21:02.020that we see throughout the Old Testament.
00:21:04.800The Egyptians sought to slaughter the Hebrew baby boys.
00:21:08.020Same way, same kind of concept here.1.00
00:21:10.380slaughtering the baby boys and what did it do it led to moses's deliverance like it's so funny0.53
00:21:16.060satan's going i'm gonna i'm gonna go out and i'm gonna try to get rid of them by getting rid of
00:21:19.580these boys and then like god's like nah like here's moses is gonna just escape you know and it0.98
00:21:26.700does it again right we see this in king herod what happens with herod oh i'm gonna go and slaughter0.97
00:21:31.580all the bait it's all about killing the seed i'm gonna go slaughter these baby boys and what does0.96
00:21:37.580god do oh no just go out this way go to egypt and all of a sudden jesus comes back so this is0.99
00:21:44.060this is again the the crushing the promised seed was always satan's primary objective throughout
00:21:52.700history now it came in many forms and many wars and different battles but this is the biological
00:21:57.660reality hey let's try to mix these things up biologically as a way to prevent now this demonic
00:22:05.900perversion of the human race was one of the great reasons for the flood you have this very weird
00:22:12.380polluted biology of the human race and in verse 3 god offers a countdown to this judgment a
00:22:20.460countdown to this judgment so it says in verse 3 then the lord said my spirit shall not abide
00:22:27.420in man forever for he is flesh his days shall be 120 years okay
00:22:35.900many people have misinterpreted this passage believing that god is declaring some sort of
00:22:43.780limitation of 120 years on human lifespan they just took it this verse right out of context no
00:22:49.600that's not what it's saying at all has nothing to do with human beings living in a particular
00:22:54.420number of years um god is responding to the perversion of humanity and declaring that his
00:23:00.740grace is only going to extend for 120 more years and then the flood's coming and then the flood is
00:23:05.580coming. We see in 1 Peter 3.20, it says, quote, because they formerly did not obey when God's
00:23:16.120patience waited in the days of Noah, that 120 year period, while the ark was being prepared
00:23:23.020in which a few, that is eight persons, were brought safely through the water. And so we also
00:23:29.840know this to be the correct interpretation because there are several people after the flood who live
00:23:35.100far beyond 120 years. You have Shem, 600 years. You have Arpashad, 438 years. Shalath, 433 years.
00:23:44.840Eber, 464 years. Abraham even lives 175 years. And so you have this continued long length of life,
00:23:51.740though it is starting to diminish due to the effects of sin over time. Okay, so now we get to
00:23:58.960verse four, which is the Nephilim. Okay. The Nephilim. It says the Nephilim were on the earth
00:24:07.920in those days. And also afterward, when the sons of God came into the daughters of men0.96
00:24:17.100and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
00:24:26.240Depends on which translation you have there.
00:24:28.540And bear with me, I'm trying to fight a cold,
00:24:30.080so I try not to speak too hard so I don't cough.
00:24:36.520Now here we have this term, the notorious term, Nephilim,
00:24:42.480which only appears in the scriptures twice.
00:24:46.240And so you don't have a lot of context.
00:24:48.600The word Nephilim, now you have giants
00:27:32.700i believe they are the offspring of the sons of god which are the fallen angels
00:27:41.020and the daughters of men so genesis 6 4 if you just read the text it directly connects the
00:27:48.020nephilim to the unions described in verses 1 through 2 i think there's an easy exegetical
00:27:52.920connection there um the text does not merely place the nephilim in like the same era
00:27:59.340it actually states when the sons of God came into the daughters of men and they bore children to
00:28:06.020them. The most natural reading of this is that the children born to them were these mighty men
00:28:12.700of old, were these Nephilim. I think that's the most natural reading that you can take.
00:28:17.620Now, the language also suggests something biologically abnormal, right? So you have
00:28:22.500this relationship, the sons of God and the daughters of men, and it produces this0.82
00:28:26.760biologically irregular result. These extraordinary beings, these mighty men,
00:28:32.500men of old, right? And you also have extra biblical texts like 1 Enoch
00:28:39.300that unanimously interpret the Nephilim as the offspring of these kind of superhuman
00:28:44.540or supernatural unions, which indicates that, again, this wasn't some projected modern idea
00:28:52.200on the text. But this is actually the historic interpretation from these generations that we've
00:29:00.540received these texts. And so the second question becomes, how did the Nephilim come back after the
00:29:08.220flood? And there's a lot of fascinating discussions. Some people say that, oh, you know
00:29:15.760what? Maybe it killed all humanity. It killed all the Nephilim, the flood, but maybe the flood
00:29:23.740didn't kill the sons of men because they were angels. They weren't actually men. They're0.88
00:29:30.300actually embodied angels. Maybe they changed their embodiment and maybe they became some sort of
00:29:37.020water capable creature. So there's some weird interpretations. They exist out there and a lot
00:29:44.300of it is just theory, but those exist as realities. So we have to notice that the text says the
00:29:52.660Nephilim were on the earth in those days and also afterward. In those days and also afterward.
00:29:58.560It doesn't give us a ton of context. Is it talking post-flood? Is it talking about afterwards when?
00:30:04.740But we do know because Numbers mentions the Nephilim that we go, okay, well, they're here.
00:30:08.740They're here then, and they're here also in this other period of time as well.
00:30:13.520And so we cannot view the flood merely as God trying to eliminate the Nephilim.0.93
00:30:19.340The purpose of the flood wasn't just, we're going to just eliminate the Nephilim.0.58
00:30:23.420Yes, that's a big part of it, especially if there was massive multiplication in the Nephilim prior to the flood.0.96
00:30:30.080But the primary objective of the flood was really to wipe out the sinfulness of man, which included the Nephilim creatures.0.54
00:30:38.560And so I say this because scripture places no explicit limitation on fallen angels repeating the same sin prior to the birth of Christ.0.95
00:30:51.120So I believe that could this same circumstance occur again where you have the angels of men or the sons of God that are looking down upon the daughters of women?
00:31:05.360there's no explicit prohibition in scripture saying that this couldn't happen again to another
00:31:11.620group of angels. We do know that the first group was taken and thrown into some dungeon for the
00:31:17.800judgment, but it doesn't mean that this couldn't be reproduced again. And so until the seed of
00:31:25.660Christ came, the war between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman continues0.96
00:31:31.260underway of course it does it's continuing all the way until that seed is born and so i would
00:31:37.980argue that the restraining of the demonic war over the seeds uh really didn't have some sort of
00:31:47.580reprieve until the birth life ministry death resurrection and ascension of jesus and so
00:31:54.220And why is that? Why is that important? Mark 12, 29, they're calling Jesus a servant of Satan.
00:32:06.420He's essentially serving God, or he's serving the devil. And Jesus says,
00:32:13.220how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, he's casting out demons,
00:32:19.040unless he first binds the strong man, meaning Jesus has bound Satan at some degree,
00:32:25.540then indeed he may plunder his house, end quote.
00:32:28.540And so the coming of Christ, we now know, especially after the resurrection,
00:32:33.700all authority has been given to Christ in heaven and on earth.
00:32:37.220Prior to that, we know that Satan had some sort of authority on earth.
00:32:42.020We know that because he offered that authority to Jesus in the temptation of the 40 days.
00:32:47.220He goes, hey, look at all the nations, look at all the earth, all these will be yours
