00:00:00.000 Amen. Well, I feel like it's been a little bit somber this morning. I don't know if the snow

00:00:04.960 has just made us a little calm or not, but excited to have a conversation with you guys and

00:00:11.120 also just be preaching through the Word of God here. This is a really wonderful passage of

00:00:16.240 Scripture. Honestly, when I was preparing this passage of Scripture, I honestly didn't understand

00:00:23.780 the text until I had gone through and exposited the text. And so it was actually about something

00:00:29.720 that I didn't expect and I think it might be the same for you. Bear with me, I'm still, you know,

00:00:34.660 I'm a couple weeks of being sick and I'm finally starting to get a little bit of a rhythm here and

00:00:40.020 so if I take some breaks for water, that's the reason behind that. Today's sermon is really a

00:00:47.300 part two of last week's sermon on Romans chapter 8 verses 5 through 8 or 5 through 9 and in verses

00:00:57.580 five through nine, we saw a few things. We saw Paul make several statements of contrast. He was

00:01:04.620 contrasting two realities between the flesh and between the spirit, back and forth, back and forth

00:01:10.520 between these two realities. And the term that I've been using even in my own study is he's

00:01:16.760 talking about flesh walkers and he's talking about spirit walkers. And I know those are funny terms, 1.00

00:01:21.780 but I use those terms because I don't want you to think that Paul is dealing with behavior.

00:01:25.940 Paul's not dealing with behavior.

00:01:27.380 He's dealing with identities.

00:01:29.900 And this is essentially what Paul is doing is that he's not talking about how sometimes

00:01:34.920 Christians walk in the flesh and sometimes they walk in the spirit.

00:01:39.680 He's not using that structure in this particular passage of scripture.

00:01:44.340 No, he's talking about those who are in the flesh and those who are in the spirit, those

00:01:49.840 who are saved and those who are lost.

00:01:53.260 And so these are definitive descriptions of two categories of people.

00:01:59.940 And we have essentially one people that is saved and I would say controlled by the Holy Spirit.

00:02:06.780 And then we have other people who are not saved or pagan or unconverted and are controlled by the flesh.

00:02:13.900 And it's why he said in verses 5 through 6, if you guys look down in your Bibles, it says,

00:02:18.280 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh.

00:02:22.000 But those who live according to the Spirit set the minds and the things of the Spirit.

00:02:26.360 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

00:02:31.360 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God.

00:02:34.060 That's a fact.

00:02:35.080 For it does not submit to God's law.

00:02:37.820 That's a fact.

00:02:38.680 Indeed, it cannot.

00:02:39.740 That's a fact.

00:02:40.900 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

00:02:43.440 Again, this is a fact of identity.

00:02:46.240 And so Paul concluded that section by addressing the Roman Christians directly.

00:02:51.000 He looks directly at them by saying, you, you, however, are not in the flesh, but are in the spirit.

00:03:00.540 If, in fact, the spirit of God dwells in you, anyone who does not have the spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

00:03:08.680 And so, again, this passage of scripture is characterized by this back and forth contrast that we're seeing,

00:03:13.580 a back and forth contrast that's either speaking of the controlling and animating power of the flesh

00:03:19.900 or the controlling and animating power of the spirit.

00:03:24.540 And so today's sermon, we're going to see one more great contrast.

00:03:28.300 And if I could summarize it into one sentence,

00:03:30.560 it would be that the gift of spiritual life surpasses the cost of physical death.

00:03:36.760 Okay, the gift of spiritual life surpasses the cost or the pain of physical death.

00:03:43.740 That is what this text is about.

00:03:47.220 And so last week, we concluded by reading verse 9.

00:03:49.900 It says, anyone who does not have the spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

00:03:58.020 So today in verse 10, he draws now our attention and he addresses the saved.

00:04:03.520 So if verse 9 was addressing the lost, he's doing this other contrasting and he's now addressing the saved in verse 10.

00:04:10.680 It says, but if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness.

00:04:19.900 so Paul makes it clear that the requirement of eternal life is the

00:04:23.840 indwelling of the Holy Spirit that is a requirement now in this generation this

00:04:28.600 doctrine has been vandalized by the charismatics okay we have a very skewed

00:04:34.000 and polluted understanding of what it means to have the indwelling of the Holy

00:04:39.420 Spirit in this generation we have you know expressions of being slain in the

00:04:45.040 spirit we have expressions that require speaking in tongues to be in the spirit

00:04:49.360 We have the Kesawicks that talk about a second blessing or a second coming of the Holy Spirit.

00:04:57.480 And so for that reason, we need to understand what scripture teaches about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

00:05:03.160 What does it actually say so that we could bank on the word of God when we have questions on this matter?

00:05:10.240 Ephesians 1, 13 tells us,

00:05:12.960 In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed, were sealed with the promise of the Holy Spirit.

00:05:26.360 So if you're wondering when the Spirit comes to indwell a person, if you're wondering if Christ is really in you,

00:05:39.720 The way that you determine that is not by looking at your spiritual experiences.

00:05:43.540 It's not by looking at your spiritual activity.

00:05:45.980 It's by looking if you believe and trust in Christ.

00:05:52.700 Because nobody can believe and trust in Christ that does not have the Holy Spirit.

00:06:01.340 Jesus says in Matthew 7, 21 through 23,

00:06:04.240 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven.

00:06:07.340 On that day, many will say to me, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not cast out

00:06:15.580 demons in your name and do mighty works in your name? And then I will declare to them, I never

00:06:20.960 knew you. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. Spiritual activity does not determine 0.59

00:06:27.440 spiritual security. It doesn't. I drove past churches on the way here knowing that those

00:06:34.900 pastors are not regenerate. There are churches who are filled with spiritual

00:06:41.980 activity but do not know the gospel. They're moralists, religious, churchianity

00:06:49.960 but have not repented and truly trusted on the righteousness of Christ for

00:06:55.300 salvation. The only way to determine if you have the spirit is to ask yourself,

00:07:03.220 do I know that I'm a sinner? Do I know that on judgment day when I stand before God

00:07:09.400 that I have not a righteousness of my own but I need an alien righteousness given to me?

00:07:15.320 Do I know that I am a sinner and need to be forgiven and those sins need to be covered?

00:07:22.640 Do I believe those things? If you do, that is the confirmation that you have the indwelling

00:07:29.840 of the Holy Spirit. But here in verse 10, Paul makes a passing parenthetical statement.

00:07:36.880 Just a passing statement. You just kind of want to keep reading.

00:07:43.900 He says, spiritual life does not free a person from physical death. If you look in verse 10,

00:07:49.940 it says, but if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin,

00:07:55.220 the spirit is life because of righteousness. It's just easy to just kind of keep reading.

00:08:01.720 You're like, oh yeah, the body's dead because of sin. And then you realize his entire argument

00:08:07.400 is revolving around this parenthetical statement. As we know, Paul opened up this chapter with the

00:08:14.000 words, therefore there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And I believe

00:08:22.480 that Paul includes this parenthetical, this caveat in this sentence regarding the death of the body

00:08:28.980 because he's anticipating an honest and I would say obvious question. If there's no condemnation

00:08:36.420 for those that are in Christ Jesus, if that's a true statement, if Christ was our substitute, 0.87

00:08:42.860 dying the death that we deserve in our place, then why do Christians still have to physically die 0.90

00:08:48.580 like the rest of unredeemed humanity? 1.00

00:08:52.840 It's a good question.

00:08:55.840 It's a question that I actually spent

00:08:57.340 a significant amount of time this week studying.

00:09:00.620 That is, if Christ has died the death that we deserve,

00:09:03.300 why do we still as Christians have to die?

00:09:08.780 Dr. David Murray, 1.00

00:09:10.440 he answered this question well.

00:09:13.140 He said in an article on Table Talk Magazine,

00:09:14.900 he said, quote,

00:09:16.060 the simple answer is they don't have to die. Believers do not have to die because Christ has

00:09:24.820 died in their place. There is not an atom of penalty left to pay. For that reason, God could

00:09:30.760 justly translate Christians to heaven without experiencing physical death, just as he did with 0.80

00:09:36.300 Enoch and Elijah. And he, as he will do with billions of Christians who are alive when Christ

00:09:42.260 returns, end quote. Fascinating, right? Fascinating perspective. Now, as we know, the vast majority

00:09:52.240 of us are going to die. We are going to experience a physical death. So how should we think about

00:09:59.020 this? Why do we still have to die if we technically don't have to die? Now, theologically and

00:10:07.480 biologically speaking, physical death is a consequence of sin. We know this because we've

00:10:12.040 already been through Romans chapter 5. In verse 12, it says, just as sin came into the world

00:10:17.620 through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all had sinned.

00:10:23.180 You die, we die, we're sick, we have cancer, we have disease because of sin. It is the cause,

00:10:32.720 it is part of the curse, it is part of the decay of our bodies.

00:10:37.840 in addition scripture teaches that we cannot experience a physical resurrection

00:10:44.520 unless we have experienced a physical death

00:10:48.300 first corinthians 15 36 says what you sow does not come to life unless it dies

00:10:56.560 anybody is in the agrarian world or understands agriculture you understand that reality

00:11:02.980 a few verses later Paul says for this perishable body must put on the imperishable and this mortal

00:11:11.020 body must put on the immortality John 12 24 Jesus is speaking about the necessity of his own

00:11:21.800 physical death and he says something fascinating he says truly truly I say to you unless a grain

00:11:29.480 of wheat falls into the earth and dies it remains alone but if it dies it bears much fruit end quote

00:11:41.560 but then we get to philippians 3 10 and i think the answer that you guys are looking for

00:11:46.280 of why do we still physically die what's the value in physically dying if we don't technically have

00:11:51.720 to die Philippians 3 8 and 10 it says quote for his sake I suffer that I may

00:12:03.220 know him and the power of his resurrection and may share in his

00:12:09.460 sufferings becoming like him in his death and quote so ultimately God has

00:12:18.040 actually seen that there's some sort of spiritual benefit for us to experience a physical death like

00:12:25.240 him there's some sort of spiritual benefit there it's physical death permits us to share

00:12:33.160 in a physical resurrection like christ it becomes this ultimate test of faith it becomes this

00:12:38.680 ultimate testimony to our friends and family about the peace that we have in the face of death

00:12:43.960 question 42 in the heidelberg catechism actually touches on this exact question

00:12:52.360 it asks since christ has died for us why do we still have to die the answer is

00:12:59.580 quote our death does not pay the debt of our sins rather it puts an end to our sinning

00:13:06.740 and is our entrance into life end quote i think that's beautiful

00:13:13.500 For the Christian, the deathbed actually becomes the birthing room.

00:13:18.420 It becomes the place where we enter in to eternal life.

00:13:22.460 One theologian once wrote,

00:13:24.180 the graves of Christians are truly the seed beds of the coming resurrection.

00:13:30.340 It's why churches used to have graveyards next door,

00:13:34.400 that we might all rise together.

00:13:37.260 It looks like deadness, but it's truly seeds falling into the ground

00:13:41.460 that must die in order to resurrect.

00:13:47.440 So again, Paul says here in verse 10,

00:13:49.960 but if Christ is in you,

00:13:52.020 although the body is dead because of sin,

00:13:55.540 the spirit is life because of righteousness.

00:14:00.760 Not because of our righteousness,

00:14:02.240 but because of the righteousness of Christ

00:14:03.700 given to us by faith.

00:14:06.080 That is, if Christ is in you,

00:14:08.020 although your body will die because of sin,

00:14:09.480 this does not mean that you will die.

00:14:13.260 I think of C.S. Lewis's quote,

00:14:16.340 you are a soul, you have a body.

00:14:20.700 You are a soul, you have a body.

00:14:23.980 And though this body may die, does not mean that you die.

00:14:30.780 Jesus says to Martha,

00:14:34.300 quote, I am the resurrection and the life.

00:14:36.340 Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet he shall live.

00:14:40.400 And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

00:14:45.700 This is a fascinating passage of scripture.

00:14:47.920 The gift of spiritual life essentially surpasses the cost of physical death.

00:14:57.860 If you don't anchor that truth down into your soul,

00:15:02.220 you will look at death with fear and anguish and bitterness.

00:15:09.480 The gift of spiritual life surpasses the cost and impact of physical death.

00:15:22.440 It's why verses 8, or sorry, in chapter 8, 8 verses later from now, Paul says,

00:15:28.760 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth to be compared to the glory that is to be revealed in us.

00:15:37.820 Yeah, we physically die.

00:15:39.480 but do you understand the value of the spiritual life that you've been given that's what Paul is

00:15:48.820 getting across yes you might have cancer you might have a terrible disease and dementia

00:15:59.160 you might suffer in pain

00:16:03.160 but do you understand what you've been given in Christ

00:16:09.080 This is the contrast that Paul is breaking forth.

00:16:15.560 The hardship of physical death is not even an appropriate comparison

00:16:19.480 to the treasure of spiritual life that we have in Christ.

00:16:25.500 Our bodies will die, but we won't.

00:16:30.700 I think it's the Baptist catechism I used to say with my kids,

00:16:34.660 you know, do you have a soul as well as a body?

00:16:37.360 yes, we have a soul that will never die. We have everlasting souls. And the physical death that we

00:16:45.400 do die will be without fear of eternal judgment. It'll be without guilt and condemnation. And it

00:16:51.640 will essentially permit us to share in the sufferings and the death and the resurrection

00:16:56.960 of Christ. And for those who still have anxiety, those who still are worried or concerned about

00:17:06.040 the loss of their body. Paul in the next verse gives you an incredible promise. He says in verse

00:17:14.260 11, read with me, if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised

00:17:20.960 Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells

00:17:28.340 in you. Essentially, Paul is telling us how the spirit gives us life that will overcome the

00:17:37.080 problem of our body's physical death. It's like, so yeah, you're going to lose your body for a

00:17:45.160 minute. And if you're so worried about the loss of your body and not recognizing the reality of

00:17:51.760 the spiritual life that's been given to you in Christ, that's step one. Step two is that body

00:17:57.120 that died, it's coming back. This is an amazing passage of scripture. It says, and if I could

00:18:05.300 paraphrase, if the spirit of Christ is in you, who raised Jesus from the dead, if that

00:18:14.380 same spirit dwells in you, then it is only coherent and logical and consistent to conclude

00:18:23.960 that the people of God

00:18:27.580 will have the exact same experience that Christ had.

00:18:32.880 That essentially, that same effect that it had on Christ's body

00:18:36.760 will have the same effect on your body.

00:18:40.280 As faithful as the resurrection of Christ was

00:18:42.660 is the faithfulness of the resurrection of your body

00:18:44.960 at the return of Christ.

00:18:46.340 first corinthians 2 or sorry second corinthians 4 paul speaks to the same promise he says

00:18:59.040 we speak knowing that he who raised the lord jesus will raise us also with jesus and bring

00:19:07.580 us with you into his presence so we do not lose heart though our outer self is wasting away our

00:19:13.320 inner self is being renewed day by day for this light momentary affliction is preparing for us

00:19:19.320 an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison end quote amazing that's in a it's such an

00:19:28.800 important passage of scripture death is the absolute last enemy to humanity we have people

00:19:39.300 that are so afraid of it.

00:19:43.080 But this reality is something

00:19:45.280 that we must anchor ourselves to,

00:19:47.780 this truth.

00:19:51.620 1 Corinthians 15, 20, he says,

00:19:54.660 but if in fact Christ has been raised from the dead,

00:19:57.200 the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

00:20:00.000 In other words, Christ is not the only fruits.

00:20:03.660 He's the first fruits.

00:20:07.520 He's not the only harvest.

00:20:09.300 He's the first harvest.

00:20:11.720 There are countless other fruits to come.

00:20:16.700 Now to be clear, every person who dies will experience a physical resurrection.

00:20:27.660 The atheist will experience a physical resurrection. 1.00

00:20:32.780 The Muslim will experience a physical resurrection. 1.00

00:20:38.020 The sexually immoral, the idolaters will experience a physical resurrection. 1.00

00:20:45.980 Scripture says that there will be a time in history

00:20:50.620 that at the name of Jesus, every physical knee will bow

00:20:54.740 in heaven and on earth and under the earth

00:20:59.000 and every physical tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

00:21:07.120 Now, in addition to this physical resurrection, we're also going to have a judgment.

00:21:12.160 Every one of us will have a judgment.

00:21:15.220 Now the difference between the Christian's judgment and the pagan's judgment, and the

00:21:20.820 difference between the Christian's resurrection and the pagan's resurrection, is that the

00:21:26.660 Christian's going to experience glory and peace and eternal life because of the righteousness

00:21:33.580 of Christ imputed to them by faith.

00:21:39.440 The pagans' resurrection and judgment 0.73

00:21:41.700 is going to lead to bodily torment, divine justice, and wrath.

00:21:48.100 That is the clear teaching of Scripture.

00:22:26.460 you can't burn without a body think about that for a minute you can't burn

00:22:36.120 without a body you can't weep with body the the weeping and gnashing of teeth

00:22:40.680 you can't weep without a body hell is often referred to as a place that there

00:22:46.200 is without thirst or a desire for thirst there's there's no water what I would do

00:23:06.900 Ultimately, the descriptive feelings of hell in Scripture demand a physical body.

00:23:17.440 Daniel 12, 12 says,

00:23:18.940 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

00:23:29.460 Acts 24, 15 says, I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.

00:23:41.900 John 5, 28 through 29.

00:23:43.800 For an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and will come forth.

00:23:51.000 Those who did the good deeds to the resurrection of life,

00:23:54.820 those who committed the evil deeds to the resurrection of judgment.

00:24:02.420 Matthew 25, 32 through 34 and verse 46, it speaks of his judgment.

00:24:07.960 It says, before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

00:24:21.480 And he will place the sheep on his right, but on the goats he will place them on his left.

00:24:28.420 Then the king will say to those on his right,

00:24:32.260 Come, you who are blessed by my father,

00:24:35.880 inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

00:24:40.620 And to the goats, he would say,

00:24:43.220 And these will go away into eternal punishment,

00:24:46.980 but the righteous into eternal life.

00:24:52.200 One more passage, Revelation 20, 11 through 15.

00:24:57.040 It says,

00:24:57.720 Then I saw a great white throne, and him who was seated on it, from his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.

00:25:09.640 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and the books were opened.

00:25:15.660 Then another book was opened, which is the book of life.

00:25:19.740 And the dead were judged by what was written in the books according to what they had done.

00:25:25.820 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it.

00:25:31.640 Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them.

00:25:35.860 And they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.

00:25:41.560 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.

00:25:44.220 This is the second death, the lake of fire.

00:25:48.280 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown in to the lake of fire, end quote.

00:25:59.600 We often place a great importance on where our names appear.

00:26:08.300 Some strive to have their names etched in stone, in a monument, a statue.

00:26:14.000 you. Some strive to have their names be seen in newspapers or magazines or book covers

00:26:21.680 or diplomas. We dedicate years to having effort put forth to achieving recognition with our

00:26:30.680 names in these prestigious places. But the only place where having your name written

00:26:38.320 really and truly matters is to be written 0.66

00:26:41.600 in the Lamb's Book of Life.

00:26:44.380 Hebrews 10 31 says,

00:26:46.200 it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands

00:26:48.720 of the living God.

00:26:51.480 Many people are one stopped heartbeat away from hell.

00:26:57.060 Many people have allowed their pride

00:26:58.980 to prevent them from repentance of faith.

00:27:03.120 Will your name be written in the Lamb's Book of Life?

00:27:08.320 Will you be one of those whose body might not live, but your soul is alive?

00:27:19.880 The bottom line is this.

00:27:22.420 Eternal souls who sin against an eternal God demand eternal consequences.

00:27:29.560 People often say that the consequence of eternal hell seems harsh.

00:27:34.760 It's because we don't understand the holiness of God

00:27:39.020 We are dust that disobeys a creator

00:27:41.440 Eternal souls who sin against an eternal God

00:27:47.900 Require eternal punishment

00:27:49.820 Do not underestimate the gravity of your life
