00:00:19.960 quite a bit. For the past five weeks, we've been studying eschatology. If I could offer

00:00:27.600 just a simple definition of eschatology. It would be the study of what God says

00:00:37.020 about how history will end. That's what we're talking about. What does God say

00:00:45.180 about how history will end? Today, I'm going to be delivering sermons six of seven,

00:00:52.340 and it's titled Post-Millennialism in the Old Testament.

00:00:58.820 Now, if you remember part one introduced in eschatology, it was an introduction.

00:01:02.800 We talked about historic premillennialism, amillennialism, and postmillennialism.

00:01:08.360 Those are the three primary views.

00:01:10.180 Now, if you remember part two, I did kind of a polemic or a defense against historic premillennialism

00:01:21.060 and dispensational premillennialism, showing that there is a current reigning king and a current

00:01:27.420 kingdom. Part three through five, we did a introduction to the doctrine of partial

00:01:36.160 preterism. And that was really understanding how Matthew chapter 24 verses one through 35

00:01:41.280 were speaking to events regarding the temple's destruction in 70 AD and not events that were

00:01:49.480 become in our future regarding the end of the world. Now, as I have stated several times in this

00:01:57.360 series, our beliefs on eschatology have severe consequences on how we live. 0.68

00:02:08.220 If Christians believe that God intends for the church to progressively suffer and shrink,

00:02:16.700 where only a small remnant of society will be, you know, raptured and rescued at the return of

00:02:25.360 Christ, then the church is going to offer, or it's going to adopt a posture of defeatism

00:02:32.960 and survival rather than a posture of conquering and advancing Christ's kingdom.

00:02:42.180 Now, if there was ever a justified time for God's people to have a posture of pessimism,

00:02:50.060 I believe that it was in the Old Testament.

00:04:14.060 Without Christ reversing the curse of the fall, these types of descriptions from Isaiah and Micah would be the inevitable trajectory of humanity.

00:04:29.120 Corruption would spread among the nations further and deeper and wider.

00:04:33.960 And the longing for a savior would go stronger and stronger.

00:04:41.520 But, this is the key point here, but to apply that old covenant pessimism after new covenant victory

00:04:53.980 is to not grasp the trajectory-transforming power of the gospel.

00:05:05.600 It's literally the year 2025 based off of the coming of Christ.

00:05:12.440 There was a cosmic trajectory shift that occurred

00:05:25.300 And then there was a shift, and we're going to be talking about that today.

00:05:31.340 If I could clarify just a bit, to maintain an Old Covenant pre-Savior posture.

00:05:41.480 We're waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue this world.

00:05:45.860 If you have that posture, that's an old covenant posture.

00:05:50.320 But if you have that in a new covenant post-savior era,

00:05:57.520 it's kind of like continuing to live in darkness after the sun has risen.

00:06:02.880 It's basically what a lot of people in the church do.

00:06:06.980 You're waiting in darkness even though it's sunny outside.

00:06:13.200 And we have this pessimistic church that it's only going to get worse.

00:06:17.220 And it's just going to get harder and harder for the church.

00:06:20.620 And you shouldn't maybe have kids or grandkids because it's just going to get more difficult for them.

00:06:30.780 Today, under the new covenant, we have the substance.

00:06:33.880 We have the substance of what the old covenant promised.

00:06:39.220 We have the reality of what the Old Covenant foreshadowed.

00:06:44.320 We have the Messiah, his power, his authority over heaven and earth.

00:06:48.320 And it has shifted and overturned the trajectory of the fall.

00:07:08.580 But it really teaches that Christ is reversing the effects of the fallen Adam.

00:07:16.780 And now, again, while I believe that the Old Covenant or the Old Testament believers had this reason for pessimism,

00:07:25.200 I want to clarify that it wasn't an untethered pessimism.

00:07:29.080 It wasn't just like this ongoing forever pessimism.

00:07:33.700 It was limited because it was waiting for the birth of the Messiah. 1.00

00:07:53.120 We're sitting here like as if we're old covenant Jews waiting for Jesus to come save us,

00:08:03.700 However, this is because Christians don't grasp how Christ fulfilled the Old Covenant promises.

00:08:18.900 How His life and death and resurrection and ascension produced this cosmic shift from progressive societal fall to progressive societal flourishing. 0.61

00:08:46.620 So today, my aim is to demonstrate how the Old Testament foretold victory for the New Testament era.

00:09:12.080 I could reflect on the minor prophets, the major prophets, the Proverbs, the Psalms.

00:09:19.680 So I'm primarily going to focus on the words of Genesis.

00:09:27.060 But I want to show how Christ is three things, three things, the promised serpent crusher, the promised nation saver, and the promised dominion taker.

00:09:47.420 Those three things we will see from the Old Testament to the New Testament. 0.55

00:10:46.320 in preparation. Number one, serpent crusher. Turn to Genesis chapter 3, 14 through 15.

00:11:04.200 So the Lord God said to the serpent, because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle

00:12:08.540 and her descendants, who, without getting into all the exegetical realities, is the people of God.

00:12:18.040 And so, this passage is often referred to as the Protoevangelium. It's the first gospel that we see

00:12:25.000 in the Bible. And it foreshadows the ultimate defeat of Satan, which comes through the seed

00:12:32.720 the woman which is specifically speaking of christ but also the people of god now contextually

00:12:41.800 this verse establishes this ongoing war this ongoing enmity between the forces of evil

00:12:51.700 and the people of god which culminates again in christ's victory over satan through his death and

00:12:58.340 resurrection. So this is kind of, again, first gospel foreshadowed in the Old Testament. It's

00:13:03.260 why Matthew took so much effort to highlight that genealogy that we always just kind of skip in

00:13:09.140 chapter one. He's retracing all of the genealogy back to Adam to prove that he's that guy.

00:13:20.060 Now, first, I want to point out that God says,

00:13:28.480 And you shall eat the dust all the days of your life.

00:13:36.380 He says this to Satan.

00:13:40.820 Now, again, this is a promise to defeat the serpent and his seed, his descendants, those people.

00:13:48.800 Remember when Jesus says, your father is the devil, speaking to the Pharisees. 0.97

00:13:53.900 Okay, there is a descendants of the devil.

00:13:58.120 In fact, through the Old Testament and even in the New Testament, we see this phrase used so many times of God conquering his people.

00:14:06.540 And he's talking about licking the dust.

00:14:11.280 Psalm 72 speaks of the Messiah's reign.

00:14:14.380 And it says, he shall have dominion also from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth.

00:15:04.060 They shall be afraid of the Lord our God and shall fear because of you.

00:16:02.920 up my standard for the peoples. They

00:16:06.700 arms and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders. Kings shall be your nurturing fathers

00:16:14.100 and their queens, your nursing mothers. They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth and 0.99

00:16:34.260 Well, then we have also all the New Testament passages

00:16:36.620 of Jesus telling the disciples,

00:16:42.400 or the message of the gospel, the kingdom of God,

00:16:52.920 Again, God promises the devil and his descendants

00:16:55.540 that they're going to eat dust.

00:16:56.960 This is a promise that is ultimately triumphed and fulfilled in Christ, but also in the church.

00:17:08.120 It's not just Christ defeating Satan.

00:17:11.960 It's also Seth over Cain. 0.66

00:17:39.200 It's this constant, ongoing, intense victory of the seed of God over the seed of serpents.

00:17:47.820 That's what you're seeing over and over and over.

00:17:53.180 And second, I want to look at God's statement,

00:18:01.020 He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise His heel.

00:18:07.880 Marcellus Kik said,

00:18:10.260 All the cunning and poison of the serpent, or of a snake, is in its head.

00:18:18.120 The crushing of it means the defeat of that cunning and that poison.

00:18:23.180 of the serpent. I love that catch there. This is another theme that's established in Genesis

00:18:34.040 and fulfilled not only in Christ, but also in the church. Let me give you a few examples.

00:18:40.300 I want you to turn to Luke chapter 10, 17 through 18. Luke chapter 10, 17 through 18.

00:19:00.120 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying,

00:19:04.060 Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name.

00:19:11.080 And he said to them, pay attention here.

00:19:15.940 I saw Satan fall, past tense, like lightning from heaven.

00:19:20.440 Then, behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and over all the power of the enemy,

00:19:30.680 and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

00:19:35.480 Okay, so through the church's proclamation of the gospel, Satan falls from heaven to the dust of the earth.

00:19:46.560 Okay, that's the kind of imagery that you're trying to see here.

00:19:49.940 He's falling from heaven, from a high place to the dust of the earth, where God's people trample upon Satan and serpents.

00:20:40.300 they deceive the hearts of the simple.

00:20:43.360 This is kind of a characteristic of the deception of the serpent, right?

00:20:49.940 For your obedience has become known to all.

00:20:53.160 Therefore, I am glad on your behalf, but I want you to be wise in what is good and simple concerning evil.

00:21:01.000 That's kind of an echo to be wise as serpents and soft as doves.

00:21:05.140 Okay, there's an element there.

00:21:06.880 And verse 20.

00:21:07.860 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.

00:24:06.840 It says, now the ruler of this world will be cast out, Jesus is saying in his ministry.

00:24:12.860 Hebrews 2, 14 through 15, that through death he might render powerless him who had, past tense, had the power of death, that is the devil,

00:24:24.440 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

00:24:30.360 1 John 3.8, the Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.

00:24:36.560 Ephesians 1.23, and he put all things under his feet, past tense, as they are made his footstool.

00:24:46.180 Fulfilling the prophecy of this, what I'm saying here is this is fulfilling the prophecy of crushing the serpent's head

00:24:55.740 and establishing him as supreme authority overall.

00:25:05.400 So you're getting one side is that, yeah, everything's going to be under his feet

00:25:09.400 because he's ruler and authority of all.

00:25:12.040 But it's also a kind of a quick image call to the serpent under his foot as well.

00:25:22.180 Okay, when you hear all of these scriptures, when you hear all this victory,

00:25:25.340 all this past tense reality,

00:25:26.700 how can a person read those truths and i just gave you a small sample

00:25:34.820 and lead them to expect that satan's kingdom is now expanding and christ's kingdom is getting

00:25:42.020 smaller and smaller when a leader wins those who follow him do not prepare for failure they

00:25:52.000 prepare for victory. Like, why would we as Christians assume anything less than triumph

00:25:58.520 when Christ has already conquered? It's a very strange thing to be a defeatist in the church.

00:26:09.580 You see, the shift that must take place is this. The gospel is not a proclamation

00:26:16.900 of something to come.

00:26:20.700 It is a proclamation of something that came.

00:26:24.220 It is past tense.

00:26:27.180 Imagine you had two kingdoms

00:26:29.000 and one kingdom overtook the other kingdom.

00:26:33.860 But that kingdom might be large

00:26:36.320 and the war may have not been fought

00:26:38.400 in their particular area.

00:26:40.560 People from the winning kingdom

00:26:42.020 would need to go into that kingdom

00:26:44.100 and let people know for a thousand miles that they have been conquered and there is a new king.

00:26:50.460 That is basically what we're doing with the gospel.

00:26:56.240 Our job is to tell the world, the devil lost.

00:27:01.400 He lost.

00:27:03.980 There is a new king.

00:27:05.900 It is Jesus Christ.

00:27:07.120 And you can either bow or be cast out.

00:27:11.700 Those are your options.

00:27:14.300 That's a much more potent and powerful gospel message

00:27:17.780 than Jesus loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.

00:27:22.560 Yes, Jesus does love his people

00:27:25.340 and does have a wonderful plan for them.

00:27:29.100 But the truth is, you walk up and you go,

00:27:37.180 Let me tell you how he lost and when he lost.

00:27:40.440 And let me tell you who the new king is, King Jesus.

00:27:44.100 next i want to speak to jesus as the nation saver he is the great nation saver

00:27:53.960 by god's grace you'll become a christian nationalist after this section okay

00:27:59.920 genesis chapter 12 verse 3 it says i will bless those who bless you

00:28:05.140 and I will curse him who curses you

00:28:08.500 and in you all the families of the earth 0.94

00:28:14.400 will be blessed.

00:28:16.440 I love that he doesn't say all the individuals of the earth.

00:28:19.420 I love that God thinks in covenantal framework.

00:28:23.200 Genesis 12, 3.

00:28:25.180 And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

00:28:29.780 Now outside of God's preservation of Noah,

00:28:32.060 Noah, this covenant with Abraham represents God's first major act of fulfilling that promise that he made to Eve of victory over the serpent.

00:28:47.860 This is kind of the first major act outside of, again, Noah being preserved.

00:28:54.900 God essentially says to Abraham,

00:29:01.500 which includes both Jesus and all those who have faith,

00:29:40.940 It's because God put his people here.

00:29:46.560 You want to know how this town gets more blessed?

00:31:26.760 So what we're seeing here is the devil is assuming power and authority over the nations.

00:31:35.840 Now, God prophetically tells us that those nations which were ruled by Satan will be given to King Jesus.

00:32:09.400 And the people's plot in vain,

00:32:17.780 The kings of the earth, they set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed,

00:32:26.140 saying, let us burst their bonds apart from us and cast away their cords from us.
