00:00:53.220 and they demand that Jesus should be called Yeshua and that God should be called Yahweh?

00:00:57.760 Some of you might know these people as Messianic Christians, but there's a new growing movement

00:01:03.100 of people holding to this Jewish-centered theology.

00:01:06.380 But the question we have today is, is that biblical?

00:01:10.340 And better yet, is it Christian?

00:03:25.580 I have had two friends join what they call

00:03:28.600 the Hebrew Roots Movement.

00:03:30.680 I feel very unsettled with their interpretation

00:03:33.540 of the scriptures, especially the New Testament scriptures

00:03:37.560 in light of their interpretation

00:03:39.160 of the Old Testament scriptures.

00:03:40.840 but I don't feel fully equipped to disprove their doctrines. Would you be willing to shed some light

00:03:47.600 on this movement and offer some insights for defending biblical Christianity against these

00:03:54.320 false teachings? Okay, great question, Casey. I've actually had a lot of people ask me to do a show

00:04:01.380 on this topic, so you're in good company. This is a major topic that deserves far more discourse

00:04:08.260 and study than what I can offer you here. But I do believe I can at least bring an explanation

00:04:15.560 of what it is and some great resources that I'll leave at the end of this episode for you to do

00:04:21.040 further study and research. So first, what is the Hebrew Roots Movement? It's a group with

00:04:29.800 several factions or sects, right? S-E-C-T-S, right? Where some of them are more extreme than 1.00

00:04:38.480 others. You might be familiar with the Messianic Jews, which is a part of this group, but the

00:04:44.540 general defining characteristic of these people is that they believe you should follow the law

00:04:51.800 of Moses, the Torah, to the best of your ability. So that means that keeping Sabbaths and 0.98

00:04:59.580 feasts and dietary laws and potentially cleansings, et cetera. And some people in this group believe

00:05:05.840 that you can't be saved without obedience to the law, while others in the group believe that you

00:05:12.120 can. Some reject the authority of the apostolic writings of the apostles, but some don't. Some

00:05:18.580 even reject Jesus as God, while others in the group don't. And so they don't have a statement

00:05:25.680 of faith or a collection of doctrine. So I know that I'm throwing many groups of people into one

00:05:31.980 category. But again, the thread between all of these groups and the unity between them all

00:05:39.780 is basically obey the Torah. And this is the root issue, no pun intended, with this movement.

00:05:51.140 minute. So I can absolutely say from my research so far as we get into this, that the Hebrew roots

00:05:57.660 movement is a cult. Now, I know that's a strong word. What is a cult? A cult is any group founded 0.99

00:06:08.760 upon the Christian religion or the Judeo-Christian view who diverts from the biblical, historical,

00:06:16.160 and evangelical doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

00:06:20.040 So for example, a Lutheran and a Baptist expression of church, those are denominations, not cults.

00:06:27.840 They both believe in the core tenets of the historical Christian gospel, that mankind

00:06:33.660 is saved by grace alone, through faith alone, and Christ alone.

00:06:36.420 They both agree there. 0.97

00:06:38.080 Now, the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons are a cult. 0.96

00:06:41.600 They do not believe that you're saved by grace alone, through faith alone, and Christ alone. 0.94

00:06:45.600 And they also have several other perversions of a variety of other core Christian doctrine

00:06:51.220 that are detached from both sound interpretation and church history.

00:06:56.560 The Hebrew Roots Movement acts just like a cult as well. 0.74

00:07:01.700 So this is why I put it in this category.

00:07:03.720 There are a group of people who really claim that the current church is corrupt.

00:07:08.420 The scriptures, the pastorate, and the seminaries have all been blinded and lured by the doctrines

00:07:14.680 of men.

00:07:15.120 and that they have found, quote, the real way that God wants us to live.

00:07:21.820 Again, it's the same heretical foundation that the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons were built upon.

00:07:27.280 This idea of corrupt scripture, this idea of a need for a new way. 0.57

00:07:32.260 And when you know church history, you quickly learn that Satan only has a few ways to decorate a lie.

00:07:38.520 And so you start to see that, wow, this is the same pattern of all the other cults that 0.63

00:07:43.800 have been produced and spun off of Christianity over the years. 0.53

00:07:47.760 Now, it's important to note that the majority of these people, at least from what I'm 0.97

00:07:51.400 researching, and I've done a significant amount of research here, these people don't

00:07:56.380 call themselves Christians.

00:07:57.700 They call themselves Hebrews.

00:08:00.320 In fact, they consider themselves missionaries to the Christian church.

00:08:04.420 So don't view this group as people who have a slightly different view of God in the gospel.

00:08:10.120 This is not a Christian denomination. 0.78

00:08:14.640 This is a cult. 0.99

00:08:17.320 And that's a really critical statement to just start with.

00:08:20.660 Now, I know there's some people that are not as extreme, but I'm dealing with the people

00:08:25.320 that will identify with the Hebrew Roots movement.

00:08:29.480 Now, most people who leave the church for the Hebrew Roots Movement leave as a reaction

00:08:36.780 to what I think are the valid weaknesses of the modern expression of the church.

00:08:42.100 People are tired of reading about the closeness and intimacy and connectedness of Christians

00:08:47.780 in their Bible and then not experiencing that type of closeness in their own Christian life. 0.73

00:08:54.600 Additionally, I think that more and more Christians are sensing the shallowness of infotainment 0.64

00:09:00.820 Christianity or audience Christianity, and they're tired of the superficiality of it 0.80

00:09:07.160 And so as a result, this is what they do.

00:09:10.000 They run from the modern expression of the church to something that has more historical

00:09:16.620 roots or historical weight.

00:09:18.280 And they end up putting their trust in this sense of tradition and ancient paths.

00:09:24.060 And this is why you see many people leaving the megachurches for Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy or this Hebrew Roots movement.

00:09:34.820 And this, I am going to say one thing, is I've noticed several times from the testimonies of people that are in the Hebrew Roots movement,

00:09:42.400 they pray, meaning they P-R-E-Y, they pray on these weaknesses of the current modern expression of

00:09:51.740 the church. They say things like, if you're feeling like there's something more to your

00:09:57.660 Christian experience, we understand, right? They kind of appeal to this bankruptcy that's currently 0.93

00:10:03.860 in the institutional or the traditional expression of church, and I should say the modern expression

00:10:08.740 of church. Or they'll say things like, does something not feel right at your church? Do you

00:10:13.260 wish that there was more for you and more for God's people? Well, there is, right? Like that's

00:10:18.700 their angle. And so ultimately they target people who are emotionally unsatisfied and relationally

00:10:25.840 deficient in the church. And instead of telling them that they need to go find a more biblical

00:10:30.880 and healthy church, they say, you know, the modern church is lost, but we have found the way.

00:10:40.720 Come, let us show you. Let us show you. Come with us and let's show you what we found. We have to go

00:10:46.000 back to the ancient ways. And it's very, very deceptive. And this is definitely a tactic

00:10:52.700 they use. I've watched several videos on YouTube of people that are a part of this. And that's the

00:10:57.000 general undertone of how they express and evangelize. And so this is also why the modern

00:11:05.500 extra biblical expression of church should frustrate you. Okay. These again, conference

00:11:11.740 style rock band, coffee shop churches generate a spiritual territory that leaves the flock

00:11:18.980 vulnerable to these heretical movements. And these movements, they take the valid weaknesses

00:11:27.300 of the church, again, like the intimacy between the brethren or a low reverence for God or our

00:11:33.180 sad state for biblical literacy. And they say, hey, get out of the kiddie pool and come over

00:11:38.660 here to the ocean. You guys are missing it over there. We've recovered the true faith. Come and

00:11:44.900 join us, right? This is, this is what they do. And the problem is that their interpretation of

00:11:50.180 the quote, true faith is detached from church history. It's detached from theological history,

00:11:56.900 and it stands in direct oppositions. I should say opposition of the teaching of the apostles.

00:12:03.080 So let me give you a few reasons why I have come to my conclusion. So after watching some videos

00:12:10.080 from 119 Ministries. I watched a documentary called Inside the Hebrew Roots Movement.

00:12:16.760 I read several articles by their proponents. You quickly start to realize that they hold

00:12:21.420 scripture in hierarchical categories. What I mean by that is the words of God the Father

00:12:29.960 have the most authority. Thus says the Lord, has the most authority. The words of Jesus and

00:12:37.660 the prophets kind of hold the next layer of authority. And then the apostles, especially

00:12:42.380 Paul's last, hold the least amount of authority. And additionally, they have kind of this major

00:12:48.560 covenantal confusion going on that leads them to elevate the Old Testament scriptures above the

00:12:55.440 New Testament scriptures, when in reality, the New Testament supersedes the Old Testament. So

00:13:00.900 they have this backwards covenantal confusion. And then lastly, they really have a limited

00:13:06.340 or just a perverted or distorted Trinitarian view of God.

00:13:12.340 They would believe in all three persons of the Trinity,

00:13:16.100 but again, they view them in unequal respects,

00:13:19.300 meaning that God the Father is going to have more authority than the Son.

00:13:23.480 So it's not a true historic evangelical definition

00:13:27.220 or interpretation of Trinitarian doctrine.

00:13:31.060 And so let me offer just a brief theological argument

00:13:33.880 against the Hebrew Roots Movement.

00:13:36.060 And again, I wish I could spend a lot more time on this, but hopefully this will at least

00:13:39.820 get you started, be aware of this movement, and understand what's really going on.

00:13:45.180 So first, their instruction to keep the law of Moses, the Torah, not only stands in opposition

00:13:53.460 of the New Testament, but it also undermines the work of Christ. 0.91

00:13:56.980 And this is why I have a major problem with it, and this is why I believe that the Hebrew 0.99

00:14:00.920 Roots Movement is a cult. 0.99

00:14:02.500 They are pushing a Jesus plus model, okay, a Jesus plus gospel, not a Christ alone gospel,

00:14:11.440 but a Jesus plus works gospel. This is exactly what the Judaizers did in the New Testament 0.99

00:14:18.540 that was condemned by the apostle. Let me read you Acts 15, 5 through 13. Actually, 0.98

00:14:27.560 it might be 6 through 13. It says, but some believers who belong to the party of the Pharisees

00:14:34.500 rose up and said, it is necessary to circumcise them, that is the Gentiles, and to order them

00:14:42.260 to keep the law of Moses. The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this 0.96

00:14:48.020 matter. And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, brothers,

00:14:53.000 You know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.

00:15:03.080 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us. 0.62

00:15:10.680 And he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.

00:15:16.520 Verse 10, pay attention.

00:15:17.760 Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples

00:15:25.640 that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we will be saved

00:15:34.060 through the grace of the Lord Jesus just as they will. The Hebrew Roots Movement misses that the

00:15:42.700 purpose of the law was to reveal our inability to keep it, to show our absolute condemnation

00:15:51.180 by the law, and to point us toward our need for a savior to rescue us from the law. Okay, the law

00:15:59.040 is a giant arrow that points us toward and prepares us for Jesus Christ, the righteous one.

00:16:07.700 This is key, and this is at the heart of what they don't understand in this movement.

00:16:14.760 I'm going to read you another passage, Galatians 5, 1 through 4, and I'm going to break this

00:16:20.860 down as I'm reading it for you.

00:16:23.220 Verse 1 says, it was for freedom that Christ has set us free.

00:16:28.760 Well, what has he freed us from?

00:16:30.180 Well, he's freed us from the jurisdiction of the law.

00:16:34.020 That is that we who have faith in Christ are no longer condemned by the law.

00:16:39.420 So he says, it was for freedom that Christ has set us free.

00:16:43.340 Therefore, keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

00:16:49.340 Well, keep standing firm in what?

00:16:51.160 We're saying stand firm in grace and don't go back to the burden of the law.

00:16:56.280 Verse two, look, I, Paul, tell you that if you have yourself circumcised, 0.82

00:17:02.300 Christ will be of no benefit to you. He's saying, if you believe that you're saved by keeping the 0.96

00:17:09.160 law, which included circumcision, then Christ will be of no benefit to you. He's telling these

00:17:17.040 people, are you really serious? You would rather attempt to attain your own righteousness than

00:17:22.060 accept the righteousness of Christ? Verse three says, and I testify again to every man who has

00:17:28.600 himself circumcised, that he is obligated to keep the whole law. He's saying, Paul's saying,

00:17:34.380 if you're going to keep some of it, you better keep all of it. In other words, you better realize

00:17:39.300 that you need to keep all 613 of those laws if you want to be found righteous on judgment day.

00:17:45.820 Verse four says, you have been, so he's basically summing this up as a result. So he says in verse

00:17:52.100 four, you have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by the law.

00:17:56.940 you have fallen from grace, end quote. So this is, man, I can't tell you how many passages

00:18:04.980 of scripture teach this. So it's just a deceptive movement of people who don't read their Bibles and

00:18:12.880 who don't believe in the authority of scripture. So most importantly, and again, as I said earlier,

00:18:20.500 they have covenantal confusion. They don't understand the grand narrative of scripture.

00:18:25.860 They don't see that God is doing something in a whole story with the creation and then the fall

00:18:34.200 and then the prophecy and then the fulfillment and then redemption and then promise and then

00:18:40.040 consummation. They don't see this. And they, like the book of Hebrews explains in chapter 8 through

00:18:48.520 10, they point out, um, they serve a shadow of the real thing. So imagine, let me just give you

00:18:55.920 an example here. Imagine if you were talking to me in person, but I was behind a wall. Okay. So

00:19:03.440 it's totally acceptable if you can't see me to speak to my shadow, because it's all you can see

00:19:08.200 of me at that point. Uh, but what if I came out from behind that wall and you still spoke to my

00:19:15.920 shadow. Okay. That's basically what the Hebrew roots movement is doing. The, the old Testament

00:19:22.500 was the shadow of the things to come, right? There was these promises that were like a shadow of the

00:19:30.560 things to come that it was pointing toward and preparing us for Christ. But imagine now that

00:19:38.500 Christ is here and we still keep looking back instead of looking forward or looking at Christ

00:19:44.680 who is in front of us. What they really don't understand is they don't understand the obsolescence

00:19:49.580 or the impotency of the old covenant. The old covenant has gone away. Hebrews 8, 13 says,

00:19:56.880 in speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete

00:20:03.260 and growing old is ready to vanish away. Okay. Romans 7, 6 says, but now we are released from

00:20:11.500 the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in a new way of the

00:20:18.120 spirit and not in the old way of the written code or the written law. Okay, Romans 8, 1 through 4.

00:20:25.380 Some of you guys know this passage. There is therefore no condemnation for who? For those

00:20:32.200 who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from what?

00:20:40.120 from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law weakened by the flesh could not do

00:20:48.500 by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemns sin in the flesh

00:20:56.060 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, meaning us who believe,

00:21:04.260 who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. This is like a summed up argument

00:21:09.620 against the Hebrew Roots Movement.

00:21:12.200 So if you run into anyone, just point them to Romans 8, 1 through 4.

00:21:16.660 Again, they dislike Paul, they discredit Paul.

00:21:20.040 And so they're going to probably just slide that away.

00:21:25.420 But that is absolutely the core doctrine that refutes this entire movement.

00:21:30.700 So the ultimate message of the Hebrew Roots Movement that they can't understand, I should

00:21:36.920 say is that we have freedom in Christ. Because we were condemned by the law, we were condemned by

00:21:45.420 the law. Christ fulfilled the demands of the law for us. And he offers us freedom now from the law

00:21:55.000 by imputing to us or giving us his righteousness by faith. Okay, that is the gospel. And this is

00:22:05.580 what makes the gospel so great. The bad news is that without Christ, you're condemned by the law,

00:22:13.240 and this should cause anyone eternal fear of God. But the good news, the gospel,

00:22:21.400 the good news is that Christ fulfilled the law. And by putting your trust in him alone,

00:22:27.980 not him plus not eating pork, not him plus keeping the Sabbath, not him plus keeping the

00:22:35.720 feasts, when you realize that your works add nothing to your security or to your ability

00:22:41.720 or to your ability to keep or earn your salvation, you can rest fully in the grace of God. You can

00:22:52.080 rest and trust in Christ alone to earn that righteous verdict for you on judgment day.

00:22:58.580 It's not about what you do. It's about what's already been done. Okay. That, that is the gospel

00:23:05.120 message. And again, stands in opposition to this movement. Now I want to put a caveat here just

00:23:11.700 because we're under grace. It doesn't mean that we don't obey. Now I'm not talking about obeying

00:23:17.040 the 613 ceremonial laws of the Old Testament. I'm talking about obedience according to new covenant

00:23:24.760 thinking. This is, you know, Jesus wraps up what is the first and greatest commandment to love the

00:23:31.080 Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your mind,

00:23:33.880 right? And the second is like it to love your neighbor as yourself. But again, this obedience,

00:23:39.560 we do it from love and gratitude for the salvation that is given to us by grace.

00:23:45.780 We don't obey from fear and law.

00:23:48.700 And this group, the Hebrew Roots Movement, they absolutely, they obey from fear and from

00:23:56.840 law. 0.99

00:23:57.340 So they're not experiencing the gospel of grace.

00:24:00.080 They're having the yoke of bondage that's still on them, and they're trying to put it

00:24:04.700 on other people.

00:24:06.560 And so I'll give you another thing.

00:24:09.000 I can sin and grace will abound.

00:24:12.080 That's what the scriptures teach.

00:24:14.160 But as Paul says, should I keep on sinning that grace may abound?

00:24:18.240 Certainly not.

00:24:19.440 Meaning don't sin just because you can, but you can.

00:24:22.020 And it doesn't change your salvation because you're not standing on your righteousness

00:24:27.520 to get into heaven.

00:24:29.180 You're standing on the righteousness of Christ.

00:24:31.240 It has nothing to do with your obedience.

00:24:33.760 Your obedience doesn't save you.

00:24:35.800 Your obedience is the fruit of the good root and the good root is Christ.

00:24:41.500 Okay, so someone who is saved will be obedient,

00:24:45.200 but even if you fail in your obedience,

00:24:47.920 it has nothing to do and it will not affect your salvation.

00:24:51.480 Your salvation is secure on the work of Christ,

00:24:54.780 not on the work of man.

00:24:58.220 Okay, so this is core.

00:25:00.000 Again, this is the defense against this is just the gospel.

00:25:04.080 So I'm gonna close just with this.

00:25:05.300 The saddest part of this movement

00:25:07.020 is that these people have no rest.

00:25:10.820 Now they might be deceived and not understand that what I'm saying here, but they don't,

00:25:16.220 they don't have rest.

00:25:17.440 They don't have true eternal joy.

00:25:20.500 Like the joy that I have knowing that I'm saved forever because I'm saved by the righteousness

00:25:27.460 of Christ.

00:25:28.240 That'll never not be righteous.

00:25:30.080 And that I've imputed, I've been imputed his righteousness by faith and that faith I've

00:25:35.140 been chosen before the foundation of the world.

00:25:37.240 and that faith's not gonna be taken away from me

00:25:39.540 because Jesus Christ is the author

00:25:41.140 and the finisher of my faith.

00:25:43.340 Like the joy that comes from that,

00:25:45.060 that I have eternal, eternal salvation,

00:25:49.320 that I have eternal life, that's promised to me.

00:25:52.180 How can you promise eternal life if it's not eternal,

00:25:55.280 if you can lose it?

00:25:56.040 No, I have eternal life.

00:25:58.440 That's the gift that's been given to me.

00:26:01.320 I have joy because of that.

00:26:04.040 These people in the Hebrew Roots movement don't have that.

00:26:06.700 They don't have any peace either. 0.98

00:26:09.680 They're still under the wrath and the bondage of God

00:26:13.880 because the only way, Jesus says,

00:26:16.400 that the only way to the Father is through him.

00:26:20.260 I'm the way, the truth, and the life,

00:26:21.340 and the only way to the Father is through me, right?

00:26:23.640 This idea is that we need to realize

00:26:27.980 that it is Christ alone who sets us free,

00:26:33.020 who saves us, who offers us that eternal security. And so they have really adopted a belief that if

00:26:44.220 they work hard enough, they might be saved. They are deceived. They have rejected grace,

00:26:50.820 and they are living under the weight of the law. I'm going to close with Romans 1.16 that says,

00:26:57.980 the gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, okay? It's not believes

00:27:07.280 plus anything else. It's for everyone who believes, everyone who exercises a saving faith

00:27:15.240 in Jesus Christ. That is the gospel. It's not about what you do, as I said earlier,

00:27:21.140 It's about what's already been done.

00:27:24.580 We get to rest in Christ.

00:27:27.140 So hopefully that was helpful in breaking this down, man.
