00:00:00.000 Welcome to this episode of Real Christianity. My name is Dale Partridge, where each week
00:00:13.120 I offer 15 to 20-minute answers to tough theological and pastoral questions. This is
00:00:19.100 a 100% listener-supported audio ministry of relearn.org. And for those who don't know,
00:00:25.720 our mission at relearn.org is to educate and equip ordinary Christians to plant biblical,
00:00:31.860 confessional, and missional house churches. For more information, just visit relearn.org
00:00:37.600 forward slash house. All right, everyone. Biblical illiteracy is a very real issue
00:00:46.580 in the modern church. In fact, in March of 2020, a study was released by the Cultural Research
00:00:52.620 Center at Arizona Christian University that revealed that only 6% of Americans have a biblical
00:01:00.080 worldview. This is fascinating because Lifeway Research says that 9 out of 10 Americans own a
00:01:06.940 Bible, meaning that we have many people with a Bible available to them and very few people that
00:01:13.660 hold to the worldview of that Bible. Another study by Ligonier Ministries earlier this year stated
00:01:19.600 that over 30 percent of American evangelicals and 50 percent of American adults don't believe
00:01:26.780 that Jesus was God. So, ultimately, we are beginning to see the true state of the Western
00:01:34.660 Church. And unfortunately, many Christians are actually part of the problem, namely that they 0.99
00:01:40.280 have a general understanding of the Bible that's made up of their periodic devotions, podcasts,
00:01:45.880 and Sunday sermons, but they don't have a disciplined devotional time that reflects the
00:01:53.280 degree of gratitude and love they have for the gospel of Jesus Christ that will bring them to
00:01:58.720 maturity. In other words, the question that would be posed to you is, do you have a daily commitment
00:02:06.220 to a genuine and hearty study, worship, prayer, and praise time that has been fruitful and edifying
00:02:14.640 for you. If not today, I'd like to share not only what I do for my personal devotional time,
00:02:22.460 but get down to the root of the American church's, what I say is, fickle and lethargic commitment to
00:02:28.340 the Word of God. But before we dive in, I'd like to make just one quick announcement. The first
00:02:33.640 thing is, praise God, we hit our donation goal for the end of the 2020 year. We made $20,000
00:02:41.800 of extra donation for this last month.
00:02:46.400 We had that goal for the podcast listeners
00:02:48.380 and some of our online social media supporters.
00:02:51.400 So thank you so much to all who supported us.
00:02:54.580 Your faithfulness really does make our ministry possible.
00:02:58.520 I also wanted to just briefly talk about
00:03:01.100 our program at ultimatemarriage.com.
00:03:04.320 Many of you might know, but many of you don't know,
00:03:07.100 my wife and I, Veronica,
00:03:08.640 we have produced a six-week marriage mentor program on theology, roles, money, sex, children,
00:03:17.640 and more. And these are basically 30 to 40-minute lectures with both her and I, with a quick
00:03:25.240 breakdown of tasks to do for the week. And it will really help you form up a biblical marriage. You
00:03:31.560 can do this program by yourself, I mean, as an individual couple, or in a group, a small group
00:03:37.840 of couples. It's $99 a couple. There's a discount for those that do it in a group format, and all
00:03:44.760 of that funding goes to support our ministry. It's a great time, guys, to start investing into your
00:03:50.780 marriage, and it's a great way to do that. So check out ultimatemarriage.com to get started.
00:03:57.180 All right, today's question is from Justin from Jackson, Tennessee, and he asks,
00:04:03.520 Pastor Dale, I can sense an increasing hostility toward Christianity in our culture,
00:04:09.080 and I'm finding more and more friends falling prey to the cultural influences of our day.
00:04:15.220 However, I don't feel equipped to respond to many of the common questions around sexuality,
00:04:21.660 gender, substance abuse, and suicide that come from non-believers in my life.
00:04:26.980 In addition, I also don't feel equipped to answer the biblical or theological questions
00:04:32.240 that come up among people in my church. Ultimately, I'm tired of not having the answer
00:04:38.840 to these important questions, and I would like to change that in 2021. Can you tell me your
00:04:45.880 daily routine or another routine that would help prepare me for a more active ministry in this new
00:04:52.080 year? Okay, Justin, this is a fantastic question. Thank you for it. It's timely, and I believe your
00:04:58.080 observation is correct regarding the changing times in our culture. Ladies and gentlemen,
00:05:05.740 I need to say something. The Lord has been very gracious to his church here in America and in the
00:05:12.180 West with his soft warning signs of the more difficult season to come ahead. The last place
00:05:19.400 that you want to prepare yourself for battle is on the battlefield. The time to make yourself
00:05:28.020 equipped and useful for the Lord's ministry is now, and those who are faithful will be fruitful,
00:05:37.780 and those who are spiritually lethargic and apathetic during this time will be barren.
00:05:43.220 And we cannot keep believing that the five-minute Jesus-calling devotional time and the 30-second prayer each day will be sufficient investment, spiritual investment, for the Lord's sanctification and preparation for the season that's ahead of us.
00:06:02.300 I mean, it amazes me that so many people who are hurting and broken, hopeless and weak every day walk by, I mean, literally physically walk by the word of God that sits upon their shelves.
00:06:17.020 The very solution that they are yearning for is laying upon the pages within a few feet of their hands.
00:06:24.880 But instead, we find ourselves looking to social media and the therapy of entertainment and video games.
00:06:31.400 We run to alcohol and pills and food.
00:06:35.000 People, this book, okay, this book, it holds the answers to life.
00:06:41.340 Not just in a sense of a solution to your immediate problems, but to the larger and deeper issues of life.
00:06:50.140 To the joy and to the contentment and to the wonder of the gospel.
00:06:55.320 There is a depth to scripture that I've seen that I can't explain.
00:07:01.400 It must be experienced.
00:07:04.240 And I just want to encourage you guys to go and see what's there.
00:07:10.500 Jesus says in Matthew 6.33,
00:07:13.480 And all these things will be added to you.
00:07:19.320 All these things, previously in that passage, he talks about food and water
00:07:23.060 and basically the things that we all worry about that we need.
00:07:27.940 And Jesus says, no, just forsake the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will take care of themselves.
00:07:35.920 Now, I can sit here and passionately encourage you to read more.
00:07:41.200 That's not what I want to do.
00:07:43.060 What I want for you is to want to read more.
00:07:46.840 I want you to be extravagantly aggravated by the wastefulness of your time upon things that don't compare to time spent with the Lord.
00:07:57.080 I want you to have a hunger and a passion for the gospel and a desire for a constant saturation of the word on your mind.
00:08:07.780 That's what we need in this season.
00:08:10.460 I want you to want the words of God more than you want food, more than you want sleep, more than you want a hot shower.
00:08:17.720 I want it to be the priority of your day, the primary reason for your life.
00:08:23.000 This is the posture that I'm trying to get at.
00:08:25.600 It's not a podcast on go read your Bible more.
00:08:30.060 It's pray the prayer that God would change your heart, that he would increase an appetite
00:08:37.040 for the word of God, that you would have a desire that is boiling up in you to get in
00:08:44.160 the word of God, to be dedicated and committed and disciplined about studying God's word.
00:08:51.580 Now, I think there's a misunderstanding in the church that leads many Christians to believe that
00:08:56.780 this rich biblical study is a duty strictly reserved for the pastor. Now, while the pastor
00:09:03.600 is called, surely, to a deeper and more comprehensive study of the Scripture than those
00:09:10.180 he shepherds, the Bible still calls for each of us to be prepared to give an answer,
00:09:15.880 to preach the gospel when presented the opportunity, to correct a brother who's in sin,
00:09:21.740 to exhort the church who has gone flat, to defend the name of Christ in public,
00:09:29.460 to suffer for the Savior when truth must be upheld,
00:09:33.780 and to just be in a state that is a representative or an ambassador of the Lord.
00:09:42.700 We are each called to that duty in the Christian life.
00:09:48.340 And church, it is high time that we move beyond this, again, five-minute devotion
00:09:53.420 and step into a commitment that's more accurately reflective of the true love that we have for our Savior.
00:10:02.360 I mean, there is no valued relationship on earth in which five minutes per day
00:10:09.360 is a sufficient quantity of invested time
00:10:11.720 to grow the bond between two parties.
00:10:13.600 It's just not a thing.
00:10:15.260 Imagine if you invested five minutes a day 1.00
00:10:17.000 into your wife's relationship.
00:10:19.200 Imagine if you invested five minutes a day
00:10:21.000 into your children.
00:10:22.160 You can do it for a week and things might be okay.
00:10:25.340 But in the long-term narrative,
00:10:27.760 that is a tragic story.
00:10:30.080 You're missing out on the depth of that relationship.
00:10:33.620 So on that note, Justin,
00:10:35.240 I wanted to share my personal, I think you asked specifically for that, what do I do on a daily
00:10:43.680 basis? What is the routine that has helped me be more fruitful, grow in maturity, and has been
00:10:54.660 used by the Lord to prepare me for more active ministry? So I want to begin with the why. I
00:11:03.620 I don't want to just, again, tell you to go read more.
00:11:05.800 That's not what this episode is about.
00:11:08.160 But I want to tell you the why I study the way I study and why I commit the time to be with the Lord.
00:11:16.380 First is that I want you guys just to know you can't know your Bible by always allowing or by only allowing other people to tell you what's in it.
00:11:24.540 You must be like the Bereans and check the teachings of others against the Word of God yourself.
00:11:30.780 So one, you can't rely always on the podcast or always on the sermon or always on the theology book.
00:11:36.640 You need to get in the Word yourself.
00:11:39.100 So that's one just overarching principle. 0.90
00:11:43.520 Second is, Christians are deceived by heresies and false teachings when they don't know enough of the truth to recognize a lie.
00:11:51.120 And so, I am committed to not being deceived doctrinally, theologically, by a teacher.
00:12:00.500 I am fully aware of what the Bible says, what orthodox, historic, evangelical Christianity has come to believe and committed to.
00:12:12.880 I know the creeds. I know the confessions of the faith.
00:12:16.500 I am not one to be fooled by deception.
00:12:21.720 Now, that doesn't mean that I can't be,
00:12:23.160 but the truth is that I work hard to make sure that I'm not.
00:12:27.000 And the sad thing is that many people in the church do not do this,
00:12:29.880 and that is why we have a variety of megachurches
00:12:32.660 and false teachers behind these pulpits spewing out lies,
00:12:36.240 and nobody recognizes them because they don't know enough of the truth
00:12:38.580 to even notice the lie.
00:12:40.960 So those are some principles there.
00:12:43.740 Getting back to the why, I want to talk about 2 Timothy 2.15.
00:12:50.180 This is probably a central passage.
00:12:52.080 It says,
00:12:52.480 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,
00:12:56.760 a worker who has not need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
00:13:02.600 This is a call from the Apostle Paul to Timothy,
00:13:05.860 and a great example and a call to Christians to work diligently
00:13:11.220 to present ourselves as one approved, one who's not ashamed, one who is ready for ministry,
00:13:18.180 one who is prepared for the work that the Lord has for them, rightly handling the word of truth,
00:13:23.180 meaning that they know how to interpret it. They know how to, you know, communicate it. They know
00:13:29.620 how to properly view it within the context of Scripture as a whole, meaning that we can read
00:13:35.740 the parts in light of the whole, and we can read the whole in light of the parts. So this is a call
00:13:41.080 to diligent, comprehensive study of the Scripture so that we can be useful for ministry.
00:13:48.580 Another passage I often reflect upon as why I do the routine that I do, and I'm going to get there
00:13:55.560 in a second, is Jeremiah 9, 23 through 24. It reads, Thus says the Lord, Let not the wise man
00:14:03.400 boast in his wisdom. Let not the mighty man boast in his might. Let not the rich man boast in his
00:14:08.800 riches. But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the
00:14:15.460 Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I
00:14:21.420 delight, declares the Lord. Okay, first, this isn't saying to glory in the knowledge of God,
00:14:28.300 but to glory in the fact that you know God. Now, the vehicle by which this relationship of you
00:14:34.520 knowing God has been developed is by his word. And so you got to be careful that it's not just
00:14:40.520 about having knowledge, but it's actually knowing God. It is the greatest, most lofty, most critical,
00:14:48.600 most valuable possession that you can have on earth. It is the only thing that God says that
00:14:54.620 we can glory in is in our relationship with him. But more importantly, this is also saying,
00:15:03.360 don't become sidetracked or infatuated with the glory of wisdom or the glory of achievement
00:15:11.180 or the glory of money or the glory of business. These things are like grains of sand beside a
00:15:18.840 mountain. If you're going to be obsessed with anything, if you're going to be committed to
00:15:25.000 anything, if you're going to be sold out for anything, let it be for God alone. That's what
00:15:29.520 this passage is saying. And I've really taken that overarching theme, that passage of scripture,
00:15:38.400 these foundational rules, and I've really applied that to how I study and why I study. And I remind
00:15:45.440 myself the value of knowing God and that there's nothing more valuable than that time that I spend
00:15:54.560 with the Lord. And so my devotional routine is about 40 to 60 minutes, six days per week. And
00:16:02.720 I don't do it right when I wake up. I'm not the best right when I wake up. So I usually do it
00:16:08.920 about an hour or two after I wake up. I actually think about it as what's the best part of my day?
00:16:15.160 Like, when am I most alert? And I want to give the Lord the best part of my day. And that's around
00:16:21.680 9 a.m. for me. And so that is my offering to the Lord, is I want to sit before him fully aware,
00:16:30.740 fully awake, fully ready, and give myself over to him. And I don't do this primarily because of
00:16:40.080 duty, while that is a part. I do this primarily because it's love. It's the most well-invested
00:16:48.100 hour of my day. And so I really break it down into six segments. The first is I do a Bible reading.
00:16:59.300 The very first thing I do is I just open up the Word of God and I start reading. Usually I do one
00:17:06.020 chapter a day. Now, sometimes that'll turn into three to five. I've even finished an entire book
00:17:12.920 before. Sometimes it'll also mean that I get stuck on a certain passage of Scripture, and I just will
00:17:19.800 read three or four verses. And I don't put any rules on it. I'm not trying to get through the
00:17:28.120 Bible. I'm trying to read and see what the Lord has for me. And again, it's more organic than it
00:17:36.540 is by, I got to get this chapter done and get this chapter done. I also always have a notebook with
00:17:42.280 me. And so I use the notebook for a variety of reasons. One is I use it to write down any
00:17:49.460 distractions that might be popping up in my head while I'm with the Lord, so that I can write them
00:17:56.100 down, side table them, and forget about them and come back to them when my devotion is done.
00:18:02.360 Instead of having them lingering in the back of my mind, and I'm giving the Lord half of my
00:18:07.460 attention. And the other reason I have the notebook is that I'm constantly trying to write
00:18:12.420 things down that might be edifying, not only for me to remember, but also for others to know.
00:18:20.020 We are rivers, not reservoirs, meaning that we are intended to bring something edifying
00:18:27.320 to our church family, to our families. There are things that I read that I often share with my
00:18:33.260 wife or my children, to my friends, to the people, to the men at my church. And this is critical.
00:18:41.340 I just want to, we so often will read and selfishly forget the wonderful truths that
00:18:51.580 the Lord has revealed to us and not share them with anyone. And we diminish our own ministries
00:18:57.380 in those moments. Now, there are things that the Lord shares that are just for me, and that I don't
00:19:04.060 immediately turn to Twitter, or that I don't immediately turn into an Instagram post, and those
00:19:08.840 things are special. The second thing I do after my Bible reading is I do a devotional. Now, that
00:19:16.060 devotional, there are thousands of devotionals out there, and 99% of them are crap. Now, this 0.99
00:19:25.240 devotional that I do, I found to be very helpful. Now, there's a handful of really good devotionals
00:19:30.480 out there, but the one that I've been doing for the past almost two years now is called
00:19:35.740 The Voices from the Past, or it might just be called Voices from the Past, Volume 1 and Volume
00:19:41.220 2. It's a 365-day devotional. Each of them are. And they're from the Puritans, meaning that they're
00:19:50.220 from the 16th, 17th century era. And the depth of maturity that has come from these Puritans,
00:20:00.740 especially because they come off the heels of a persecuted era, is just incredible. And it's
00:20:07.680 been very uplifting. Another thing I look for in a devotional, Charles Spurgeon's Morning and
00:20:14.640 Evening has a good devotional set there. But the reason I choose a devotional like Voices from the
00:20:19.900 past over maybe a Spurgeon devotional, which I love Spurgeon, is because I like the variety.
00:20:26.540 There's something about having several, I mean, 20, 30 different writers that are forming
00:20:35.780 daily devotionals. These are short one-page sermons that is more fruitful in my experience
00:20:43.680 than having the teaching of just one individual over a long period of time.
00:20:49.040 I could absolutely enjoy Spurgeon for an entire year,
00:20:52.820 but I do like hearing from a variety of these Puritan writers
00:20:56.760 that I think gives me a more well-rounded perspective from their respective ministries.
00:21:04.900 The next thing I do is I read a book called The Valley of Vision,
00:21:10.160 and this is a prayer devotional.
00:21:13.680 It is basically a collection of Puritan prayers.
00:21:16.180 You've probably heard me talk about it before.
00:21:18.400 Both The Devotional and The Valley of Vision are books that are produced by the publisher Banner of Truth,
00:21:24.780 and they are a fantastic resource for really strong theological content.
00:21:30.200 The Valley of Vision is a one-prayer-a-day book, and I have a little leather-bound copy of it,
00:21:37.260 And it helps me see the great prayers of saints in the past.
00:21:47.080 It also helps me grow my own prayer life as it expands my comprehension of what prayer is and helps me see what other saints are thankful for, are asking for, are framing their thinking around, and it's become a very edifying process to widen my personal prayer life.
00:22:14.920 And so the Valley of Vision. Once I'm done with that, and again, the devotional takes me three,
00:22:20.200 four minutes. The Valley of Vision takes me three, four minutes. So we're moving quickly here.
00:22:25.540 The next thing I move into is prayer. And prayer is not easy, okay? I labor to get into deep prayer.
00:22:36.380 I mean, it is sometimes excruciating to get into deep prayer.
00:22:43.380 The distractions of my life and my phone and my kids and my dog and whatever else is going on in my life,
00:22:55.740 it's often difficult to get myself into a place where I'm feeling and experiencing a true communion with the Lord.
00:23:05.820 And then I'm getting past the superficiality of asking for things,
00:23:11.160 but thanking God and submitting to his will and glorifying in his wonder and reveling in his truth
00:23:18.460 and really getting a chance to have an intimate moment with the Lord.
00:23:23.060 I'm not seeking for some experiential moment that I'm trying to get a better spiritual high every time.
00:23:32.660 That's not the goal.
00:23:33.480 The goal is genuine, authentic fellowship and gratitude and reflection of the things
00:23:39.900 that have been revealed to me, and in a response, I end up in worship.
00:23:46.740 And so that is the next portion.
00:23:48.820 And I try to spend many minutes in prayer.
00:23:53.360 It probably averages out to somewhere between five and ten minutes of prayer.
00:23:58.380 This is also a time that I would cover some of the immediate needs and the supplications
00:24:02.860 for the local church, the individuals at our church, the prayer requests in my local community,
00:24:08.840 the persecuted church, the issues around the world, the leaders of our land, etc.
00:24:15.840 Then there is the last section is praise and worship. And I don't do this every time,
00:24:22.340 but every time I do it, I wish I would do it more often. And this is a praise and worship,
00:24:28.780 meaning that I am actually turning on some old hymns, I sing the classic hymns,
00:24:35.740 and I worship the Lord and praise the Lord in one or two songs on my own.
00:24:43.180 And the last thing I do is not actually part of my devotional time,
00:24:48.300 but it's a part of my day, is that I'm always, I mean always,
00:24:54.900 reading at least one theology book,
00:25:00.000 meaning somebody that is shepherding me
00:25:04.340 in the theological comprehension of a certain issue.
00:25:09.260 And so, and again, I'm not turning to these,
00:25:14.680 what I would say is pretty entry-level Christianity
00:25:17.640 that many people are stuck on.
00:25:19.100 I am turning to the deep, historic, magnificent teachings of the great saints of the past
00:25:29.920 and some of the present.
00:25:32.300 I would, again, look at Banner of Truth for some of their great content.
00:25:37.620 Reformation Heritage also is another great publisher of good books.
00:25:42.960 Crossway has some pretty good books.
00:25:45.960 Get into some of the Puritan stuff.
00:25:49.100 But anything that's older from the 1800s, 1700s, 1600s is great. Charles Hodge's
00:25:58.120 Systematic Theology would be a great book. Frames, I forgot his first name, but his last name is
00:26:10.460 Frame, his book on the doctrine of God. That's another fantastic book. There are so many great
00:26:18.080 book, so please go deeper than you usually do. At the end of the day, 2 Corinthians 9.8 is a good
00:26:26.420 reminder, and I'll close here in a second, that this time, sometimes I'm worried about, I got
00:26:32.740 things to do. I got to get going for the day. I can't spend all this time studying when I have
00:26:39.520 deadlines to meet. And I remember 2 Corinthians 9.8, which comes off the heels of giving. It
00:26:47.180 comes off the heels of a verse that's about giving to the ministry of Christians. And he reminds the
00:26:54.060 Christians this, and I quote, and God is able to make all grace abound to you so that having
00:27:04.120 all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. In other words,
00:27:11.320 the fastest way to accomplishing anything is first seeking God, because God is the one that 0.76
00:27:19.460 can make up the time. God is the one that can change the timeline of my achievements and the
00:27:26.460 productivity of the day and the income that I'm looking for. He is the provider of all these
00:27:35.100 things. Therefore, seeking him first is the most effective path forward. I believe it was Martin
00:27:41.500 Luther who famously said, I have so much to do today that I shall spend the first three hours
00:27:48.780 in prayer. And I think that's a great perspective to have. So as always, guys, I will leave you
00:27:55.360 with a few resources that will further your understanding of this topic and hopefully
00:28:00.400 encourage you to have a stronger devotional time every day in the year 2021, and an ability to
00:28:10.060 prepare yourself for a more active ministry, to prepare yourself for the season of more increased
00:28:16.900 hostility toward the church, for the ability to answer the questions that are brought to you,
00:28:23.840 to edify and strengthen the church and the Christians that are around you, to not be
00:28:29.280 lethargic and apathetic like many are in the church today, but to be alive in Christ, to be
00:28:35.180 growing in Christ. And so the resources are the resources that I spoke about. But again, it's the
00:28:42.120 voices from the past devotional, number one and number two, the Valley of Vision. I will also
00:28:48.760 leave you for my praise and worship section. I put together a Spotify list that's available
00:28:53.880 actually in our relearn.org Instagram account. If you go to our bio, there's a link for it there,
00:29:00.620 but I'll also put it on the post section of this page. And it's titled Biblical Worship.
00:29:07.000 And I have handpicked, there's probably 40 songs on there so far, and I always add
00:29:11.680 more biblical songs for that playlist. And so I'll put a few other resources that I mentioned
00:29:19.720 in this post as well.
00:29:22.440 So hopefully this episode was edifying for you.
00:29:24.640 I am praying that 2021 is a year of maturity
00:29:27.960 for your walk with God.
