Dale Partridge - Romans 10_1-4： How Christ is Our Righteousness with Dale Partridge

00:00:00.000 We'll be reading Romans 10 verses 1 through 4 in preparation for the sermon this morning.

00:00:08.460 Romans 10 verses 1 through 4.

00:00:13.100 Hear the word of the Lord.

00:00:15.960 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

00:00:21.600 I bear them witness and they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

00:00:25.700 For being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God and seeking to establish their own,

00:00:31.820 they did not submit to God's righteousness.

00:00:34.500 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

00:00:39.440 This is the word of the Lord.

00:00:42.220 Well, praise be to God. Good morning to you all.

00:00:45.800 We are starting a new chapter today.

00:00:49.340 we uh later in my notes i'm going to reference that this is

00:00:55.980 we've been in romans for two and a half years september would be actually about two and a half

00:01:04.000 years we started this church plant down in cottonwood we obviously relocated up here to

00:01:09.800 Prescott. But I looked back and I started Romans 1 in March, early March of 2022. And so I just

00:01:20.640 calculated that it would probably take me about four years to get through this wonderful book.

00:01:26.220 Now, for those who are just joining us, we just finished Romans chapter 9, which is kind of this

00:01:32.040 Mount Everest peak of the book of Romans. Now, the message of Romans is broken down into a

00:01:39.420 handful of sections. One of those sections is chapter 9 through 11. That's one of those blocks.

00:01:46.240 In these three chapters, the apostle addresses the sovereignty of God in election. That's the

00:01:52.800 central point. Israel's place in the redemptive plan of God. And then the relationship between 0.99

00:02:00.080 the Jews and the Gentiles in salvation history. That's basically what we're going to cover from

00:02:04.360 chapter 9 to 10, or sorry, 9 to 11. Chapter 9 was primarily focusing on the vindication

00:02:14.080 of the claims of chapter 8. And if you look back in your Bible, you can if you want to,

00:02:20.680 it's Romans chapter 8, verses 28 through 30. You know, God causes all things to work together for

00:02:25.680 those who are called according to His purpose. You know, He foreknows, He predestines, He calls,

00:02:31.840 he justifies, he glorifies. It's this claim that essentially God is in total control of the

00:02:37.400 salvation of his people. Now chapter nine is essentially vindicating the question, well,

00:02:44.760 if God is in total control of the salvation of his people, then why did the vast majority of the Jews

00:02:51.680 reject the Messiah? That's the whole focus of nine explaining that. And we saw Paul provided 0.62

00:02:59.700 a thorough explanation, demonstrating that not all Jews are saved because not all Jews are elect. 0.97

00:03:08.320 That was a shocker to a Jewish culture. This taught us that in salvation, God's choice 0.64

00:03:16.640 is the ultimate factor that determines if someone is saved or if someone is lost.

00:03:23.420 and this is the doctrines of grace or calvinism or whatever you want to call it it's god's

00:03:32.240 sovereignty in salvation now we learn that salvation is two-dimensional we have god's

00:03:38.900 sovereignty and we have man's responsibility we have two views of one action and this is so

00:03:46.940 important for christians to grasp because there is our perspective in salvation which can appear

00:03:52.600 as if we have free will. I made that decision. I'm the ultimate catalyst of my redemption.

00:03:59.200 I heard that and I chose. And then you read the scriptures and you start to learn pretty quickly

00:04:05.580 that divine election and predestination and calling exist in the process of redemption.

00:04:15.140 And so these two truths, they don't contradict each other. They don't contradict one another.

00:04:22.080 God's sovereignty over salvation does not negate our responsibility to believe or to obey.

00:04:31.940 And how those two work together, it's one of the great mysteries of Scripture.

00:04:35.900 Charles Spurgeon once said, quote,

00:04:37.960 I see in one place God presides over all things, and yet I see in another place that man is responsible for all of his actions.

00:04:47.100 That God predestines and that man is responsible are two things Christians struggle to see.

00:04:55.180 They are believed to be inconsistent and contradictory, but they are not.

00:05:00.560 It is just the fault of our weak judgment.

00:05:04.940 Two truths cannot be contradictory to each other.

00:05:09.860 Two truths cannot be contradictory to each other.

00:05:15.080 The apostles' focus at the end of chapter 9 was really twofold.

00:05:18.740 First, he demonstrates that the majority of the Jews were not saved because they were not elect. 0.64

00:05:25.820 That's one point.

00:05:27.500 Secondly, he explained that they were not saved because they sought salvation through works rather than by faith.

00:05:37.400 so what that really sums up to mean is that they sought to meet the law's demands

00:05:45.420 for justification to be found innocent in a way that the law can never be met

00:05:53.660 they they sought out this desire to be found righteous in a way that they could never be

00:06:04.560 found righteous. Last week, I made a statement, a low view of the law always leads to legalism.

00:06:16.200 A low view of the law always leads to legalism. You must grasp this reality.

00:06:24.660 What I mean is that if you have a low view of God's moral standards for your life,

00:06:33.020 if you think that you can meet the demands of the Ten Commandments perfectly you'll try you'll try

00:06:44.100 to meet those demands but the Bible says it's impossible to be justified by obedience or by

00:06:51.320 works it's impossible two scriptures come into mind Galatians 2 16 says so we too

00:06:59.540 have put our faith in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith and not by works of the law.

00:07:09.920 Tells you why. Because the works of the law, no one will be justified.

00:07:19.960 Obedience will not be at any dimension part of the reason why you are saved.

00:07:27.560 James 2.10 says,

00:07:31.000 there's a mosquito on my, you're dead now.

00:07:37.620 Okay, James 2.10 says,

00:07:41.340 for whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point

00:07:48.200 has become guilty of all of it.

00:07:53.280 Think about that for a second. 0.75

00:07:54.640 whoever keeps the whole law you're a pharisee you've been obedient you're trying to make sure

00:08:01.060 that the actions of your life are consistent with scripture but you fail in one point which we all 0.99

00:08:06.960 know we do you're guilty of breaking every part of the law if you've ever stolen if you've ever

00:08:17.060 taken the lord's name in vain if you've lied if you've envied a person's possession uh you've ever

00:08:22.480 you know, had idolatry in your heart. You're guilty of breaking all 10 commandments. This

00:08:29.040 makes you eternally unrighteous. You are eternally unrighteous. No human being can

00:08:38.340 keep the moral law because we are born sinners. This is why we don't have to teach children how

00:08:44.560 to sin, right? It is a natural inclination of a child. R.C. Sproul said a great quote.

00:08:49.700 He says, we're not sinners because we sin. We sin because we're sinners. It's part of who we are and

00:09:01.100 it just comes out. Here's the crux. Jesus did not preach a low view of the law. Jesus preached

00:09:10.720 a high view of the law. He amplified the law. Let me give you an example. He would say things like,

00:09:16.780 you've heard that it was said you shall not murder. There's one of the law. It says,

00:09:22.720 but I say to you, everyone who is angry with his brother in his heart has committed murder

00:09:28.600 in his heart. He goes on and says, hey, you heard what it was said that you shall not commit

00:09:34.980 adultery. But I say that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed

00:09:41.760 adultery with her in his heart. In other words, God's standard for obedience isn't just in

00:09:50.920 actions, it's also in affections. It's not just in what you do, it's in what you think.

00:09:58.660 When you start to see that, you realize, uh-oh, I can't keep this. I can't keep it at all. In fact,

00:10:06.860 I sin all the time. I'm unrighteous. I'm consistently unrighteous. I have a great need

00:10:15.720 to be found righteous. This is your greatest need is to be found righteous because you're

00:10:24.760 a lawbreaker. You're a lawbreaker and you're a rampant lawbreaker. Once you grasp the enormity

00:10:34.080 of this demand. Once you see that the law is not some kind of ladder that you can climb,

00:10:41.340 but it's an ocean that will drown you. Once you see that, you will abandon law keeping as a means

00:10:49.760 of salvation and you will run to the perfect law keeper. This is what the scriptures do. It's trying

00:10:58.180 to get you to run. It's giving you no options for righteousness, no options for salvation,

00:11:08.140 except through Jesus. You want to try to do this? No, that won't work. You want to try to do that?

00:11:14.380 No, that won't work. It's like cornering. The scriptures are like cornering us and you have

00:11:20.500 nowhere to go except look up. That is the narrative of scripture. This is the foundation

00:11:28.140 of the gospel. When you see God clearly and you see you clearly, when you see that when

00:11:37.040 you're unrighteous, the day you die, Bible says it's appointed for a man to live once

00:11:44.480 or to die once and then the judgment. 0.99

00:11:48.060 You're going to die and then you will be judged. 1.00

00:11:51.700 On that judgment day, you will be judged 0.99

00:11:55.400 either on your own righteousness,

00:11:57.960 which you will fail and you will have eternal death,

00:12:01.480 or you will have an alien righteousness

00:12:04.120 that comes from Christ that will give you eternal life. 0.99

00:12:07.920 this is the fundamental flaw of the jews it's the fatal flaw of the jews and it's what we're 0.98

00:12:22.080 going to be discussing today in one through four so verse one read with me chapter 10 romans 0.99

00:12:30.740 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

00:12:41.920 You have to understand how offensive Paul's message was to the Jewish people.

00:12:49.860 Like, just bring some context.

00:12:51.080 I want to bring you into the world of the Bible.

00:12:52.680 Like, come with me for a second, because not only did Paul claim that the Jews are not all elect,

00:12:57.480 which is extremely offensive. You're not all children of Abraham. Shocker to a Jewish

00:13:04.760 community. But he also preached the many of the Gentiles were. You're not actually chosen 1.00

00:13:13.760 and they are. In addition, he preached the prophet's writings that predicted the Jews 0.99

00:13:23.740 rejection of the Messiah and the coming condemnation for those who don't turn to Christ

00:13:33.500 in faith. So like Jesus, Paul was extremely offensive to the Jews. Second Corinthians 11,

00:13:42.540 24 through 25, Paul says, five times I received at the hand of the Jews, the 40 lashes less one.

00:13:51.120 Three times I was beaten with rods once I was stoned. 0.52

00:13:54.980 The book of Acts records eight events where he is being attacked by the Jews. 1.00

00:14:01.920 And this is the expected response to the proclamation of the gospel. 0.94

00:14:07.460 Truth feels like hate to those who hate truth, right?

00:14:11.780 The preaching of Paul was so potent that it produced persecutors.

00:14:22.880 He gave a genuine bad news, good news gospel, a real gospel.

00:14:30.300 But here we also see the great fruit of the Christian faith.

00:14:33.320 We see love.

00:14:34.840 And by the power of the Holy Spirit, Paul has this supernatural ability

00:14:38.160 to love those who hate him.

00:14:45.360 Now, it's one thing to desire to pray for your wife and kids or your coworkers,

00:14:51.700 people that are commonly kind to you,

00:14:54.640 people in your life that have never done you any real serious injustice,

00:14:59.460 extended family members, even strangers.

00:15:01.160 it's another thing to desire and pray for those who want to murder and stop you that's a different

00:15:10.880 type of love

00:15:13.280 do you desire and pray for the salvation of the liberals and the child transing politicians in

00:15:25.520 our country? Do you desire and pray for the salvation of the people who lobby for pride 1.00

00:15:31.580 month and abortion in Yavapai County? Do you desire and pray for the salvation of those

00:15:37.720 people who want to take your kids through CPS because you teach them that there's only 0.76

00:15:44.400 two genders? Jesus said in Luke 6, 27 through 28, it says, but to you who are listening,

00:15:51.240 I say, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you and pray for

00:16:00.160 those who mistreat you. Do you have that kind of supernatural love, the love that Paul is exhibiting

00:16:07.020 here? Genuinely ask yourself that question. Do you love people to that degree? Now, I'm not saying

00:16:16.580 that our love for these people cancels out our duty to stand fiercely against their wickedness.

00:16:25.780 Fiercely against their wickedness. I'm also not saying that we don't pray imprecations or

00:16:30.600 judgments upon them. That if these people don't turn to Christ, that God would put an end

00:16:37.000 to their evil deeds and that he would thwart their plans of any further wickedness in our country.

00:16:43.940 It's a balance.

00:16:46.460 At the heart, desiring and praying for the salvation of these wicked people.

00:16:53.620 And at the same time, praying for justice upon them.

00:17:00.660 That their teeth would be smashed on the righteousness of Christ.

00:17:05.720 If you read the Psalms of David, the imprecatory Psalms of David,

00:17:09.200 you will quickly learn that it's righteous to hate the enemies of Christ.

00:17:16.180 You have to balance that out with loving and desiring for them to be saved.

00:17:25.940 I'm asking you that if you have that kind of love that Paul has and Jesus had on the cross,

00:17:31.600 I'm asking that if in the midst of this hatred, will you truly, at some degree, prioritize the

00:17:42.280 prayer for the people in your life and in this country and in this city that actually hate us?

00:17:50.640 Paul goes on in verse 2, follow along. He says,

00:17:53.940 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

00:18:03.020 Man, this is such a great passage of scripture.

00:18:06.880 This is important because Paul is addressing an issue that's not uncommon.

00:18:13.380 It's actually very practical for the real ministry of your life.

00:18:19.880 Humanity is inherently spiritual, okay?

00:18:22.020 It's not whether we will worship, but how we will worship.

00:18:27.300 We will worship. 1.00

00:18:28.580 The atheist worships.

00:18:30.740 The naturalist worships. 0.97

00:18:33.500 The pagans worship.

00:18:35.740 It's not whether, but which. 0.95

00:18:40.240 Paul witnesses the zeal of the Jews.

00:18:43.740 The zeal that the Jews have for God.

00:18:49.300 But it's misdirected and invalid. 0.99

00:18:52.020 He has people in his life that he's seen that have zeal, but misdirected zeal.

00:19:04.200 John 4.24 says,

00:19:07.720 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

00:19:14.960 There's an old saying.

00:19:16.380 This is important.

00:19:17.180 Pay attention to the saying.

00:19:17.900 There's an old saying, if a man is sincere in his belief, his creed is of no great importance. 1.00

00:19:26.220 That's a very stupid saying. 0.99

00:19:30.380 Sincerity is not a replacement for orthodoxy. 1.00

00:19:35.460 There are many sincere men and women in hell.

00:19:41.620 Many.

00:19:42.680 They were so sincere.

00:19:44.460 They truly thought that they were right.

00:19:47.900 Jesus speaks of these people once you turn in your Bible to Matthew 7 22 through 23 I'll wait

00:19:55.860 for you guys to get there Matthew 7 22 through 23 Jesus says on that day many will say to me

00:20:06.920 Lord Lord did we not prophesy in your name and cast out many demons in your name and do many

00:20:14.120 mighty works in your name? And then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart

00:20:20.760 from me, you workers of lawlessness. Activity does not mean security. Sincerity is not going

00:20:35.860 to save you. Truth is vital. I believe many Roman Catholics, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses,

00:20:45.460 people in the Church of Christ are sincere. I think they are very sincere.

00:20:51.720 I believe they are zealous for God, but they're like the Jews and it's not according to knowledge. 1.00

00:20:57.560 I believe many Protestants are also sincere, but have allowed their emotions to be the lens by how they view God. 1.00

00:21:10.240 They don't allow the scriptures to determine their emotions.

00:21:13.660 They allow their emotions to determine scripture.

00:21:17.080 That's the whole progressive movement in a nutshell.

00:21:21.660 And this is why the doctrine of sola scriptura and sound biblical interpretation are so vital.

00:21:27.560 They're so vital. Without the doctrine that the Holy Scriptures are our primary and only

00:21:37.160 standard for Christian faith and practice, there is no way to ensure that our worship is based

00:21:44.500 on correct knowledge, or that the gospel is based on correct knowledge. If we include tradition

00:21:51.180 or papal authority, as the Roman Catholic Church does, we are relying on the fickleness of man.

00:22:01.360 And we know that those things, men shift and change, and they don't have a consistency

00:22:06.700 throughout the ages. And without a historical, cultural, grammatical, theological hermeneutic,

00:22:17.080 Hermeneutic is just the art and science of interpretation.

00:22:21.260 It's how you interpret scripture.

00:22:23.860 We will project ourselves upon scripture and arrive at incorrect interpretations of the gospel.

00:22:31.620 And so the only way to guard against false practice, false worship, false gospel,

00:22:36.440 is to submit ourselves that the scriptures are the primary and only authority for Christian practice in life

00:22:43.880 and combine that with a careful hermeneutic.

00:22:50.160 A careful hermeneutic.

00:22:51.960 Verse 3, follow along with me.

00:22:56.160 For being ignorant of the righteousness of God 0.99

00:23:00.900 and seeking to establish their own,

00:23:05.040 they did not submit to God's righteousness.

00:23:09.060 When I started preaching through this book, Romans 1, chapter 16 through, sorry, Romans

00:23:20.960 chapter 1, verses 16 through 17, it's the thesis for this entire book.

00:23:27.300 It says, for I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to

00:23:35.900 everyone who believes. To the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For in it, the righteousness of God

00:23:48.380 is revealed from faith, for faith. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

00:23:59.860 How are we going to live?

00:24:02.500 By faith. 1.00

00:24:05.380 The reason the Jews have rejected the gospel is because they rejected the righteousness of God 0.92

00:24:10.060 that comes through faith in Jesus Christ. 0.96

00:24:11.760 And instead, they tried to establish a way to righteousness on their own through works of the law.

00:24:22.640 Again, this is the eternally fatal flaw of legalists.

00:24:28.200 The Bible explicitly says, none is righteous, no, not one.

00:24:38.040 Just sit on that for a minute.

00:24:41.500 The more you can grasp that reality, the more you will appreciate the gospel.

00:24:49.080 Our fundamental need as sinners is to be found righteous.

00:24:52.120 the righteousness that's not received by works, but by faith in the only righteous man, Jesus

00:25:01.880 Christ. Philippians 3, 8 through 9. I'm going to have you turn there because it's so good.

00:25:07.420 Philippians 3, 8 through 9.

00:25:15.760 Go ahead and get there. Philippians 3, 8 through 9.

00:25:22.120 It says,

00:25:24.500 For his sake, I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish,

00:25:29.760 in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him.

00:25:33.300 Right here.

00:25:34.720 Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,

00:25:41.060 but that which comes through faith in Christ.

00:25:44.820 The righteousness from God that depends on faith.

00:25:47.820 It's the imputed righteousness that you've received 0.83

00:25:52.680 The alien righteousness 0.73

00:25:54.100 It comes to you by faith

00:25:56.380 Your righteousness is not based on what you do

00:26:00.280 But on what Christ has done

00:26:03.220 And that perfect righteousness

00:26:08.080 That perfect law keeping

00:26:09.460 That perfect record

00:26:10.440 Is given to you

00:26:12.320 By the means of faith

00:26:17.400 1 Corinthians 1.30 says,

00:26:18.700 And because of him, you are in Christ, who became to us wisdom from God,

00:26:25.080 comma, righteousness, comma, sanctification and redemption.

00:26:30.520 Romans 4.5 says,

00:26:32.240 And to the one who does not work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly,

00:26:39.100 his faith is counted as righteousness.

00:26:42.740 2 Corinthians 5.21, which we read already.

00:26:47.100 For our sake, he made him to be sin, who knew no sin, so that in him, we might become the

00:26:54.620 righteousness of God.

00:26:57.040 Who is the righteousness of God?

00:26:59.580 Christ.

00:27:00.800 How do we become the righteousness of God?

00:27:03.160 We become part of him, in him, united with him by faith.

00:27:08.080 now that doesn't mean as christians that we don't obey

00:27:13.340 doesn't mean that we don't obey or that we don't live righteous lives we do

00:27:17.280 it simply means that our righteous works do not contribute

00:27:20.520 to our right standing with god you're not saved because of any obedience

00:27:27.080 that's not why god likes you because you're such an obedient person no

00:27:33.880 No. No. God loves you because you're in Christ. Now, yes, God, before the foundation of the world,

00:27:43.040 has decided to save you. There is some sort of affection and love upon you that is unique.

00:27:49.140 It's not based on any conditions that we know of.

00:27:53.560 But your works do not contribute in earning or sustaining your salvation. So when you're

00:28:00.280 disobedient, it's not like, oh, I lost my salvation. Or God's, you know, put me away.

00:28:10.660 You're not resting on your obedience. You're resting on the obedience of Christ.

00:28:17.140 Does Christ's obedience change? Then if not, then your justification doesn't change.

00:28:23.020 it's not this kind of fickle relationship like we have with humans where my relationship with a

00:28:31.020 person is dependent upon my actions now our job as christians is that because we are saved as a gift

00:28:38.320 it should animate and motivate us to obey that is essential

00:28:53.020 Turn with me to verse 4.

00:28:58.600 It says,

00:28:59.440 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

00:29:08.480 What a weird statement.

00:29:11.040 I had to sit in this for like 45 minutes trying to, what is this saying?

00:29:17.760 Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

00:29:21.760 Okay, eternal life and eternal death rest in the balance of law-keeping and law-breaking.

00:29:34.120 That's really, the whole Bible turns upon that idea.

00:29:42.860 In the Garden of Eden, we see that eternal life was lost because of law-breaking.

00:29:51.760 eternal life was lost because of law-breaking. In the gospel, we see that eternal life is gained

00:30:00.840 through law-keeping, the law-keeping of Christ. Not us, but the righteousness of Christ.

00:30:10.320 In Romans 10.5, which is next week's passage, we see Paul reference to Leviticus regarding

00:30:16.060 keeping the law. It states, the person who does these things, talking about keeping the law,

00:30:24.760 will live. And then it says, by them. Will live by them. The reality is, is that nobody can keep

00:30:34.060 the law. Nobody born of Adam can keep God's law perfectly. Again, James 2.10, for whoever keeps

00:30:42.220 the law but stumbles in one point is guilty of all of it. Romans 3.20, no one will be declared

00:30:47.540 righteous in God's sight by works of the law. Again, so to gain eternal life by the law requires

00:30:55.640 perfect obedience. And so yeah, was salvation earned by obedience? Yeah, it was, not by you,

00:31:01.240 but by Christ. And that obedience is accounted to your life through faith.

00:31:13.560 Turn with me to Matthew 4 or Matthew 5, 48. Matthew 5, 48. To gain eternal life by the law

00:31:22.620 requires perfect obedience. It's why Jesus says in Matthew 5, 48, I'll wait for you guys one second

00:31:32.600 to get there. Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly father is perfect.

00:31:44.820 the truth is we don't keep the law because we can't keep the law we're not perfect because we

00:31:57.520 can't be perfect we're born as lawbreakers and our natural inclination towards god is is not

00:32:07.640 god glorifying obedience but self-glorifying disobedience that's the natural inclination

00:32:12.760 of a fallen man. This is why Paul does not say the righteous shall live by works. No,

00:32:18.520 the righteous shall live by faith. I want to look at this verse together. It says,

00:32:25.580 for Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

00:32:30.520 Okay, a literal translation says, Christ is the end of the struggle for righteousness by the law.

00:32:36.920 That help? Another translation says, for Christ has accomplished the whole purpose

00:32:41.880 of the law. So the purpose of the law was to show the world God's standard for righteousness,

00:32:49.300 and essentially that you can't keep it. Why do we teach our kids the Ten Commandments?

00:32:55.560 So that they realize they can't keep them, and it drives them to the cross.

00:33:00.240 the law was never designed to save but to prepare us for and point us to the only one who can save

00:33:13.060 that's what the law was designed to do if you look at galatians 3 24 through 25 it says now before

00:33:18.880 faith came we were held captive under the law imprisoned that the coming faith would be revealed

00:33:27.660 So then, the law was our tutor.

00:33:33.880 KJV, I like it.

00:33:34.800 It translates it to schoolmaster, our trainer.

00:33:37.480 The law was our tutor until Christ came,

00:33:42.440 teaching us that we need faith, essentially.

00:33:45.240 In order that we might be justified by faith,

00:33:47.340 but now that faith has come,

00:33:48.320 we are no longer under the tutor.

00:33:52.280 We don't look at the shadow.

00:33:53.600 We look at the substance.

00:33:55.460 Christ is here.

00:33:57.660 Romans 8, three through four says, 0.98

00:33:59.160 by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh

00:34:01.240 and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh

00:34:04.060 in order that the righteous requirement of the law

00:34:07.060 might be fulfilled in us.

00:34:10.220 Matthew 5, 17 says,

00:34:11.600 do not think that I've come

00:34:12.480 to abolish the law and the prophets.

00:34:15.320 I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

00:34:19.440 Jesus has come to fulfill the law.

00:34:23.080 Christ came to fulfill,

00:34:24.740 and we got to think about this through covenant stipulations.

00:34:26.720 Christ came to fulfill the covenant stipulations to secure eternal life.

00:34:36.700 There was a covenant.

00:34:38.920 If you obey, you will live eternally.

00:34:42.080 If you disobey, you will die eternally.

00:34:46.080 We broke that covenant in Adam.

00:34:49.180 All of his progeny, everybody that comes that's born of Adam is broken of that.

00:34:54.320 Adam is our representative before God.

00:34:56.720 Christ comes and fulfills the covenant stipulations of obedience perfectly and everybody that

00:35:07.400 is born of Christ, the second Adam, receives the benefit as Christ as their representative

00:35:13.040 and secures eternal life.

00:35:16.680 This is why Colossians 3, 4 says,

00:35:19.500 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with him in glory.

00:35:29.380 Christ is your life.

00:35:31.880 Not like your actions of your daily life.

00:35:35.260 Your eternal life.

00:35:37.700 The source of life.

00:35:39.460 That is who he is for you.

00:35:42.240 this is why this verse says christ is the end of the law for righteousness to who to everyone who

00:35:53.980 believes not to everyone but to everyone who believes belief alone is not the means for

00:36:02.420 righteousness and ultimately salvation i want to talk about this is very important many sex

00:36:08.340 or cults in kind of the Christian world

00:36:13.240 do not reject faith.

00:36:16.880 But they believe that faith alone is not sufficient.

00:36:22.980 I just watched a video last night

00:36:26.120 of a Eastern Orthodox guy.

00:36:28.880 He says, faith plus labor.

00:36:32.260 I'm like, no, that sounds like faith plus works to me.

00:36:34.360 I don't know about you, but.

00:36:35.080 um you know they adhere to what is called this faith plus works gospel it's not the gospel

00:36:43.420 it's a fatal approach to the gospel because why why is it fatal

00:36:51.280 because it rejects the sufficiency of christ

00:36:56.000 and it assumes that our morality earns god's favor in salvation

00:37:05.080 Those are two fatal flaws.

00:37:09.020 If you're coming into heaven thinking that Christ wasn't enough

00:37:13.740 and that you were, you're going to hell.

00:37:21.340 If you have any hope in yourself

00:37:26.080 and struggle at all to believe that Christ was sufficient,

00:37:31.960 he did most of it.

00:37:33.480 I'll do the rest.

00:37:35.080 Lord, Lord, we did so many things in your name.

00:37:40.640 We were so sincere.

00:37:42.700 Away from me, I do not know you.

00:37:45.160 You who practice lawlessness. 0.88

00:37:48.120 You wicked person who thinks that my son was not enough and you were. 0.98

00:37:56.820 The Roman Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox, the Mormons, 0.58

00:37:59.680 they've all incorporated a faith plus works gospel.

00:38:05.080 into their doctrines. And again, it leads people to partly rely on their own efforts.

00:38:13.140 In addition to faith, that is legalism.

00:38:21.660 It's not as legalistic as the Pharisees who maybe had no faith and believed only in works.

00:38:26.440 It is still legalism. So the central point, as I close here, the central point that grieves Paul

00:38:33.780 so deeply is that his people have rejected the truth that Christ is our righteousness.

00:38:42.940 If you don't get this,

00:38:46.020 every day in the church is just condemnation because you knew so much and yet did not grasp

00:38:55.760 the absolute critical point of the gospel. That your salvation rests upon

00:39:02.160 the righteousness of Christ.

00:39:04.500 You obey not to earn salvation,

00:39:07.060 but to please God.

00:39:09.200 You obey from a motive of gratitude.

00:39:13.420 Yes, we love to obey.

00:39:15.000 We love to please God.

00:39:16.040 It has nothing to do with your justification.

00:39:19.600 Nothing at all.

00:39:24.560 I'm going to close

00:39:25.620 with a fulfilled prophecy

00:39:28.580 from Jeremiah 23.

00:39:32.160 5 through 6. I think it upholds this truth. It's a great passage of scripture. It says,

00:39:39.200 Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous branch

00:39:49.020 and he shall reign as king and deal wisely and shall execute justice and righteousness

00:39:57.060 in the land. In his day, Judah will be saved and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name

00:40:07.080 by which he will be called. The Lord is our righteousness. Amen. Amen. Let's pray.

00:40:17.200 Father, we thank you, Lord, for the message of the gospel. Lord, that it is so contrary to the pride

00:40:22.860 of the flesh, that we might be able to earn some and that the sufficiency of Christ is not enough.

00:40:32.580 Lord, we ask that you would cast down that idea in our own midst, in our own hearts,

00:40:39.560 that we would rely solely and completely, not upon our works, but upon the work of Jesus Christ.

00:40:50.240 we ask all these things in your son's name

00:40:53.840 amen
