00:00:19.000 verses and start in verse 13 to add some more context. I'll be reading out of the

00:00:25.620 ESV, Romans 11, 13 through 18.

00:00:30.400 Hear the word of the Lord. 1.00

00:00:34.120 Now I am speaking to you, Gentiles. 1.00

00:00:37.740 Inasmuch, then, as I am an apostle to the Gentiles,

00:00:41.300 I magnify my ministry, 0.77

00:00:43.640 in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous,

00:00:47.880 and thus save some of them.

00:00:50.380 For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world,

00:00:53.260 what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?

00:00:58.180 If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump.

00:01:03.120 And if the root is holy, so are the branches.

00:01:06.720 But if some of the branches were broken off,

00:01:36.340 And what a wonderful chapter Romans 11 is proving to be.

00:01:43.500 it's a delicate chapter that is communicating the relationship between Christians and Jews.

00:01:55.660 This is not something that is ethereal and has no application,

00:02:02.220 but we need to see how God has interconnected or made almost interdependent

00:02:10.580 the relationship of Jew and Gentile in his plan of redemption.

00:02:17.460 Now if you remember, the chapter has been broken down into three sections, okay? So

00:02:20.780 chapter verses 1 through 10 tell us of Israel's rejection is not total, but God

00:02:31.760 actually saves a remnant. 11 through 32 tell us that Israel's rejection is not

00:02:41.300 final, but their hardening, God's hardening of

00:02:46.040 them, is temporary and purposeful. In the last section, which is 33 through 36, it's

00:02:54.200 Paul's doxology of praise for this beautiful design of Gentile Jew interconnected plan of 0.71

00:03:03.680 redemption. Now, over the past few weeks, we learned that the Jews stumbling over Christ was 0.98

00:03:11.540 a covenant judgment. They were judged for their unfaithfulness, stumbling over Christ, 0.84

00:03:16.860 but it was also this divinely appointed means to redeem the elect Gentiles.

00:03:28.220 11.11, if you guys want to follow along, I'm going to go through some verses.

00:03:31.160 11.11 says, 0.94

00:03:34.380 Through their trespasses, salvation has come to the Gentiles. 0.98

00:03:41.120 We also learned that the redemption of the Gentiles or the nations, 0.94

00:03:44.220 We know that word Gentile in Greek means nations.

00:03:50.480 Okay, we know that the redemption of the nations 0.98

00:03:53.520 was designed to provoke the Jews to jealousy. 0.88

00:04:00.620 1111b says that the Gentile redemption 0.85

00:04:04.140 was to provoke them to jealousy.

00:04:08.140 13 to 14 says, I magnify my ministry

00:04:11.540 in order to somehow make my fellow countrymen jealous. 1.00

00:04:18.960 Okay, so we learned that the nations, the Gentiles, 1.00

00:04:24.020 will succeed in the provocation, the provoking of the Jews by how? 0.95

00:04:33.600 Well, it's by demonstrating the substance of the covenant promises made to them in us. 0.99

00:04:41.540 You want to make the Jews jealous?

00:04:45.240 Show the substance of the covenant blessings that were to them in us.

00:04:52.640 By this jealousy, Paul says, there will be a Jewish revival. 0.89

00:05:00.340 In the future, there will be a Jewish revival.

00:05:07.360 11, 12, and 15 speaks of this revival. 0.95

00:05:10.340 it says, now if their trespasses meant riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for

00:05:20.020 the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion be? For if their rejection means 0.55

00:05:29.040 the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?

00:05:36.620 Okay. What does that mean? We talked about this last week. It means

00:05:42.300 if bad brought about good, then good is going to bring about great.

00:05:51.900 If their rejection did this much, imagine what their acceptance will be.

00:05:58.360 It's also informed us about the broad sequence of events eschatologically,

00:06:04.860 talking about the end times it tells us in verse 25 a partial hardening has come 0.67

00:06:16.440 upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in gives you a little 0.79

00:06:25.680 bit of a sequence here so if the revival of the Jews is to be provoked by the 0.78

00:07:11.040 Their hardening toward Christ sparks a worldwide Gentile revival 0.99

00:07:26.260 When that commission is fulfilled or completed,

00:07:41.020 and when that revival occurs I don't know how long it'll be the end of time will come Christ

00:07:48.380 will return the resurrection of the dead that's my general interpretation and many

00:07:54.060 historic theologians interpretation of this passage of scripture. Ultimately, when God calls

00:07:59.260 the nation of Israel to revival, it's going to be close to the end. I'm not talking weeks.

00:08:04.940 I'm talking maybe in a century. Who knows? But that's going to be a wonderful thing

00:08:11.260 to see the Jews in mass come to Christ. Now, the overall theme of this chapter is to understand

00:08:20.000 the divinely interconnected reality

00:08:23.500 between Jews and Gentiles.

00:08:27.280 That's what 11 is about.

00:08:30.800 Specifically, 0.61

00:08:32.240 how the Gentiles are to view the Jews. 0.97

00:08:40.880 How are you supposed to view Jews? 0.97

00:08:46.840 Apostate Jews and believing Jews. 0.99

00:08:50.000 In fact, in my next sermon, you're going to see Paul offering a pastoral warning 0.99

00:08:58.680 about becoming arrogant or conceited toward the Jews.

00:09:04.080 As I've mentioned for several weeks now, this does not mean that we become Jewish sympathizers 0.92

00:09:26.200 However, this should not harbor any special animosity,

00:09:57.600 In America, it's easy to think that Christianity is kind of like this westernized, originated faith.

00:10:05.820 But Christianity is not a new religion.

00:10:11.120 It's the fulfillment of an old religion.

00:10:17.120 We need to understand Old Testament religiosity and how it connects with Christianity.

00:10:27.440 It's the fulfillment of an old religion that we were not part of.

00:10:35.120 Now today, we're going to see Paul inform the Gentile believers of their station in the New Covenant. 0.89

00:10:41.120 In other words, we're going to see that while we have equality in the covenant, we do not have exactness in the covenant. 0.87

00:10:48.060 And I'm not a disby, okay?

00:10:49.740 I'm not talking about dispensationalism.

00:10:52.240 But while we have equality in the covenant, we don't have exactness in terms of station in the covenant.

00:11:01.600 The Jews do hold a unique position in the covenant.

00:12:30.020 Here, Paul says in verse 16,

00:12:35.220 If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also.

00:12:40.580 And if the root is holy, the branches are too.

00:12:47.280 There are really two camps of interpretation on this.

00:12:49.920 One says these are two analogies for two related but distinct different interpretations.

00:12:55.400 The other is that there are two analogies that are synonymous.

00:13:00.020 And they both mean the exact same thing said a different way.

00:13:03.420 I'm going to stand on the second one because I believe that's the most accurate.

00:13:09.320 I think it's more convincing.

00:13:10.720 I think scripture, Hebrew poetry back up that interpretation.

00:13:15.260 But how should we interpret those metaphors?

00:13:18.800 That's the key.

00:13:20.540 What is the dough?

00:13:22.900 What is the first part?

00:13:24.900 What is the root?

00:13:25.780 Now, as a general theme, it means that one part, if one part is holy,

00:13:34.780 the whole from that which it came from is also holy.

00:13:40.500 Basic principle, right?

00:13:42.680 It also is kind of communicated in 1 Corinthians 7,

00:13:49.320 which says

00:13:51.400 the children of one believing

00:13:53.300 parent

00:13:53.820 are holy

00:13:56.080 you're going to see how this connects in a minute

00:13:58.940 it says for the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his 0.97

00:14:01.400 wife and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her 0.95

00:14:03.280 believing husband for otherwise your children 0.99

00:14:05.400 are unclean but now they are holy

00:15:02.160 When you eat of the food of the land,

00:15:06.080 you shall lift up an offering to the Lord.

00:15:10.500 Of the first of your dough,

00:15:13.280 you shall lift up a cake as an offering.

00:15:17.380 From the first of your dough, you shall give to the Lord an offering throughout your generations.

00:15:23.740 Okay. 0.87

00:15:26.620 God commands Israel to perform what's called a heave offering. 0.99

00:15:31.260 You've heard that kind of heave and hoe. 1.00

00:15:33.120 You know, heave offering means to pick something up and hold it before the Lord. 1.00

00:15:39.680 Similar to a wave offering where you're waving something before the Lord.

00:15:43.800 and he commands Israel to perform a heave offering 0.56

00:15:50.700 to lift up a cake from the first of their dough

00:15:54.820 from the first of their wheat harvest

00:15:58.640 and the offering represents the sanctification of the whole harvest

00:16:04.240 if this is accepted by the Lord the whole lump is as well

00:16:09.540 it's basically the logic that's being used here

00:16:12.960 by dedicating the first part, they acknowledge that the entire crop came from God. It's all

00:16:20.720 God's, not just this cake, all of it. If the cake is the Lord's, then the harvest is the Lord's.

00:16:30.920 Essentially, again, if the first belong to God, the rest belong to God. Now, the key question is,

00:16:37.760 what does this first piece, and does the root mean in this metaphor?

00:16:45.540 Now, I stand with Robert Haldane, Martin Lloyd-Jones, Calvin, many others,

00:16:50.620 who believe that they represent the patriarchs, specifically Abraham.

00:17:00.300 Abraham is the cake. Abraham is the root.

00:17:03.260 but also Isaac and Jacob, you can argue there.

00:17:11.680 So what Paul is saying is

00:17:13.340 just as the first portion of the dough is offered

00:17:17.180 to God to sanctify the whole batch,

00:17:20.080 the holiness of the patriarchs

00:17:22.220 consecrates the whole nation.

00:17:24.740 You get that?

00:17:27.200 Just as the cake sanctifies the whole batch, 0.70

00:17:31.620 Abraham sanctifies the whole nation.

00:17:36.520 Again, if the parent is covenantally holy,

00:17:40.440 the child is covenantally holy.

00:17:44.680 When God accepts the part, he sanctifies the whole.

00:17:51.280 he sanctifies the people of ethnic Israel.

00:17:59.200 Why does this matter?

00:18:00.600 And what is Paul trying to tell us?

00:18:03.700 The apostle is using these metaphors to defend the claim

00:18:06.540 of a future revival of ethnic Israel.

00:18:10.680 You're going to see this in a second.

00:18:12.600 He's saying the remnant is not the end.

00:18:17.520 If God saved Abraham and Isaac and Jacob,

00:18:20.440 the first fruits, the root,

00:18:23.400 we should expect him to save the crop.

00:18:30.080 That's basically what's being communicated.

00:18:32.860 This truth really intersects with the basic tenets

00:18:35.860 of federal headship, representation, patriarchy,

00:18:38.960 all types of stuff.

00:18:41.660 If God saved the covenantal father,

00:18:44.620 he will save the line that follows. 0.91

00:18:48.380 Now, again, this doesn't mean that every Jew 0.92

00:18:49.920 is gonna be saved.

00:18:50.740 That's not what I'm saying.

00:18:52.340 But it does define a covenant line

00:18:55.200 in which we should expect salvation as the normative outcome.

00:19:02.480 That's why we should expect our kids to be saved, normatively.

00:19:09.900 What this tells us is that the entire plan of redemption

00:19:12.620 rests completely on God.

00:19:17.300 You cannot be going through Romans 8, 9, 10, and 11

00:19:21.900 and have room for man's free will.

00:19:29.460 There is no room for man's uninhibited decisions

00:19:48.300 That's why Paul ends this chapter by saying,

00:20:10.620 The Jews have a unique station in the covenant. 0.90

00:20:58.820 That's the difference. That's the point the apostle is trying to get in verses 17 and 18. 0.94

00:21:44.540 You got a healthy, cultivated olive tree,

00:21:54.060 you quickly learn that a wild olive tree

00:21:58.360 bears very little fruit, if any.

00:22:06.280 The imagery is intended to show

00:22:09.760 that the remnant came about by God cutting off natural branches, 1.00

00:22:36.480 Because you're inheriting the promises made to the Jews. 0.94

00:22:49.340 This should produce, at some degree, some sort of Gentile humility.

00:23:14.920 Now, when he says the branches,

00:23:17.020 he means both Jewish believers that are connected to the vine 0.99

00:23:21.480 and the ones that have been cut off. 0.91

00:23:29.480 He's not just talking about Jewish believers.

00:23:32.380 Don't be arrogant toward them. 0.86

00:24:33.600 My expectation is that maybe Gentile pride had already began setting in to the early church

00:24:41.560 And the apostle, by the power of the Holy Spirit, wrote this to remind the foreign nations

00:24:53.260 Robert Haldane, Presbyterian minister, wrote this in the 1800s.

00:25:00.580 He says, the Jews received no advantage from the Gentiles, but rather the Gentiles have

00:25:06.260 received much from the Jews from whom the gospel came forth.

00:25:10.300 its first preachers being Jewish

00:25:13.280 and of men whom even Christ himself

00:25:17.320 as concerning the flesh came. 0.94

00:25:20.600 Covenantally, the Gentile believers 0.99

00:25:23.180 become the children of Abraham

00:25:27.680 are in virtue of the relationship with him, a Jew.

00:25:36.020 I believe this is kind of a lesson that's adjacent to the fifth commandment.

00:25:49.740 As a general principle, it's crucial that we don't forget who we came from.

00:26:03.080 even if they don't have a distinct relationship with us.

00:26:36.800 We don't hate America or the founding fathers

00:26:41.180 while embracing the beautiful freedom that we have as a nation.

00:26:50.360 We have to honor our Christian forefathers, our Christian foremothers.

00:26:54.880 We don't want to get into a place where we just kind of start tearing down things

00:26:59.020 without asking, why are they there?

00:27:04.140 Why is that fence there?

00:27:07.440 Why has it been this way for so long?

00:27:11.200 Is it wise for us to go and just pave our own ways?

00:27:16.960 12 generations got it wrong, maybe.

00:27:23.620 We have to recognize that we're not some isolated

00:27:25.940 or disconnected circumstance,

00:27:30.020 but that God has made us a part of a heritage web,

00:27:37.200 spiritually, physically, nationally, whatever.

00:27:42.440 There's a quote that I often say,

00:27:44.020 is that a man who doesn't know history

00:27:46.260 is like a leaf that doesn't realize he's part of a tree.

00:27:53.260 So what's the application? 0.96

00:27:55.940 First, again, I want to say that we don't want to have a special animosity toward the Jews, but a special pity.

00:28:04.660 We should have an urgent hope for their revival. 1.00

00:28:09.320 Second, an unconverted Jew is never going to understand why we care about their future. 1.00

00:28:15.700 They're just not going to grasp that. 1.00

00:28:17.960 But this prophecy that blesses the world 1.00

00:28:20.280 is dependent upon the Israeli people 0.97

00:28:25.180 existing in some identifiable nature.

00:28:29.800 Nationally, ethnically, I don't know.

00:28:32.980 But in order for this to come about, 1.00

00:28:35.100 there has to still be Jews somewhere 0.55

00:28:42.240 For that reason, we should have some degree of interest

00:28:46.480 in their ethnic survival.

00:28:51.440 They lay it in the hands of the Lord.

00:28:56.700 They've had the most tumultuous history.

00:28:59.720 Constant fights for their wickedness. 0.98

00:29:15.340 They've invented their own way to salvation.

00:29:18.180 And for those who die in it will be judged eternally.

00:29:25.020 But also the promises of scripture are dependent upon them surviving. 0.57

00:29:31.540 And it's for the good of the Gentiles, for the world, life from the dead. 0.90

00:29:37.240 Instead, there's this balance of understanding the hatred for the blasphemy and apostasy 0.94

00:29:46.620 that comes from the Jewish nation. 0.94

00:29:48.640 And also realizing that we're connected to that root.

00:29:55.340 And you get to balance out those realities in time.

00:30:00.740 God has intertwined not just your current redemption, but your descendants' redemption 0.86

00:30:11.420 as Gentiles into this Jewish tree, olive tree. 0.62

00:30:23.140 We are children of Abraham by faith. 0.50

00:30:27.540 But what God is saying is that there's going to also be natural branches on that tree.

00:30:33.840 You're going to see that over the next couple of weeks.

00:30:37.140 There's going to be, we've only seen a cake and we've seen the fruit of the remnant,

00:30:45.080 but there's going to actually be a massive tree with branches, with grafted in Gentiles, 0.98

00:30:51.660 natural branches of Jewish roots,

00:30:55.500 people from every tribe, nation, and tongue,

00:30:58.440 all having equality of eternal reality,

00:31:01.480 but not exactness in the covenant position.
