Summary
In this episode of Real Christianity, Dale continues teaching through Romans 2:6-11, and we confront the issue of judgment. Not only the coming judgment of those who deny Christ, but also the judgment of Christians. Ultimately, I look at how Christians need to view judgment in light of the gospel.

00:02:06.760
and send it to them today. All right, guys, let's go ahead and dive in. Last week, we saw Paul turn
00:02:11.700
his focus from chapter one when he was discussing the Greco-Roman pagans who denied God to now the
00:02:18.520
focus is the legalistic Jews who denied Christ. His intention is really to show that God was
00:02:24.000
impartial toward humanity in his justice. The Jews who believed that they were special needed to
0.74
00:02:30.180
realize that outside of Christ, they had the same condemnation as the Gentile world. What that
0.96
00:02:36.560
really means is their sacrificial and ceremonial law-keeping that was so prominent in the Jewish
0.98
00:02:41.380
world does not make them righteous, and their dead religious practices would send them to the same
0.65
00:02:46.060
destination as even these heathen pagan Gentiles that we spoke of in chapter 1. So we learned
1.00
00:02:53.120
about James chapter 2 verses 10, which I'll read to you here. It says, for whoever keeps the whole
00:02:58.620
law but fails in one point has become guilty in all of it. The Jews had underestimated the power
0.97
00:03:06.800
of the law and overestimated their ability to keep it. This was essentially the grave failure
1.00
00:03:13.260
of the Jewish mindset. They did not realize that their only hope was to trust in Christ,
0.89
00:03:20.080
the one who could keep the law, and the only one who is righteous, that is the Lord Jesus Christ.
0.80
00:03:25.860
So what Paul is trying to tell the Jews here, which is again instructive for any legalistic
00:03:29.800
group, you got the Mormons, you got the Jehovah's Witnesses, you got people from the Church of
00:03:33.080
Christ, you got the Amish, you got the Roman Catholic Church, anybody that believes in a
00:03:37.560
faith plus works, salvation, that you need to maintain your obedience to maintain your salvation.
00:03:44.620
This is essential for them to understand because law keeping cannot keep you. Only the perfect
00:03:50.240
work of Christ can keep you. Your religious acts, your church attendance, your Bible reading and
00:03:56.100
prayer frequency, none of that contributes to your righteous standing or your justified standing
00:04:01.840
before God, only Christ. Outside of Christ, you and I are equally unrighteous because we've all
00:04:08.960
broken the law and no one will be justified by works of the law. We are guilty of the whole law
00:04:14.500
and we can do nothing to become guiltless except have faith in Jesus Christ. So for us to escape
00:04:22.600
the justice of God, we really need two things. And I want to talk about those two things for a second.
00:04:26.180
We need someone to be punished for our sins. So that's number one. We need someone to be punished
00:04:31.980
for our sins. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. We know that this is what is coming
00:04:39.460
for us, physical death, but also spiritual death. We deserve to die. So in order for God to maintain
1.00
00:04:46.380
his perfect justice for our sin against his law, for disobeying him, someone must die for our sins.
00:04:53.700
but thank God for Romans 5, 8, which says, but God shows his love for us in that while we were
00:05:01.000
still sinners, Christ died for us. Colossians 2, 13 through 14 says, and you who were dead in your
00:05:08.680
trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven
00:05:14.060
us all of our trespasses by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal
00:05:20.080
demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. So God dealt with our sins by accrediting
00:05:28.980
our sins and our punishment to Christ. This is the whole theological idea behind 2 Corinthians 5.21,
00:05:37.260
which everybody should memorize. It says, for our sake, he made him to be sin who knew no sin
00:05:42.840
so that in him we might become the righteousness of God, which leads us to my second point. So
00:05:48.180
The first point. Point number one is we needed somebody to die for our sins. Point number two
00:05:53.700
is that we need an alien righteousness. So even if the debt of our sin has been paid,
00:06:00.840
it doesn't make us holy. Someone paid our fine, but ultimately we still committed the crime,
00:06:09.080
ruining our holiness. We are sinners. We are sinful. We need to become righteous somehow.
00:06:17.340
We need someone to impute their righteousness to us. So we need not only of our consequences of
00:06:24.060
our sin to be paid for, but we also need the righteousness of Christ applied to us or applied
00:06:30.300
to our account. And so Romans 4, 5 says, and to the one who does not work, but believes in him
00:06:37.500
who justifies the ungodly. His faith is counted as righteousness. So we get a righteous verdict
00:06:47.040
because of Jesus Christ. Our faith in Christ is counted as a righteous verdict from God.
00:06:55.760
And so this is really the gospel. God imputes our sins to Jesus and Jesus imputes his righteousness
00:07:01.640
to us through faith. That is the gospel. It's called penal substitutionary atonement. That's
00:07:08.040
the doctrine that we're talking about here. In theological circles, this is often called
00:07:11.700
double imputation. We impute our sins to Christ. Christ imputes his righteousness to us through
00:07:17.160
faith. John MacArthur once said, God treated Jesus as if he lived your life so that he could treat
00:07:24.260
you as if you lived his. Wonderful quote. So the Jews did not understand this. They did not grasp
0.59
00:07:30.660
The Jews still believed that both their privileged status and their law-keeping was sufficient to
0.99
00:07:38.660
make them righteous, to justify them before God. They believed the wrath of God was reserved
0.82
00:07:43.940
specifically for the Gentile world, those dirty pagans that are outside of the borders of Israel.
0.98
00:07:52.240
And this was, and still is, Israel's fundamental flaw. This is still what the Orthodox Jewish
1.00
00:07:59.260
person would believe. And so they were essentially like, you know, barn animals that are trying to
1.00
00:08:07.820
sweep up their dirt pen floor when in reality, God requires a crystal clear glass floor. It's just
00:08:15.880
impossible. We can't clean it enough. We can't get it clear enough. It's just a mess. And that is
00:08:21.360
that our good works cannot meet God's standards. We can't do it. We can't clean ourselves up enough
00:08:27.200
to meet God's standards for his holiness. Only Christ can do that. So this is the foundational
00:08:33.260
context of what we're going to be talking about today. So I'm going to read Romans 2, 6 through
00:08:37.540
11. That's our focus verse for this episode. And then we'll dive in verse by verse. So chapter 2,
00:08:44.900
verse 6 through 11 in the ESV, it says, he will render to each one according to his works,
00:08:51.820
to those who by patience and well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality. He will give
00:08:57.660
eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,
00:09:03.420
there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being
00:09:07.800
who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who
00:09:13.600
does good, the Jew first and also the Greek, for God shows no partiality. So at a high level,
00:09:20.520
what we're looking at here is this text is teaching two distinct destinations of the human
00:09:27.300
soul and demonstrating the universality of the gospel or the judgment of Jesus Christ.
00:09:33.840
It didn't matter, essentially, if you were Jewish or if you were Gentile, if you denied the way to
0.53
00:09:40.960
eternal life, if you didn't seek out immortality, or you disobeyed the truth of God, which is Jesus
0.87
00:09:46.400
Christ, you will end up in hell. You will end up under God's wrath and God's fury. So to the Jew
00:09:52.500
who relied upon their ethnic heritage or moralism to appease the wrath of God, this is a shocking
0.94
00:09:59.280
message. This is a shocking message to them. And Paul is leveling again the playing field. He's
00:10:04.980
essentially saying what Jesus said in John 14, 6, when he says, I am the way, the truth, and the life.
00:10:11.200
No one comes to the Father except through me. So this truth stripped the Jews from any perception
0.80
00:10:20.260
of unique favor. It demonstrated that all people lay equal before God under the judgment of Jesus
00:10:31.520
Christ. So let's look at these verses up close to better understand the apostles' meaning here.
00:10:37.260
So verse six, he will render to each one according to his works. This is a central doctrine for the
00:10:45.320
Christian life. Judgment is individualized and not corporate. You got to grasp this. We will
00:10:52.620
each stand before Jesus Christ. So it's individualized justice. And this is something
00:10:58.120
that the Jews should have known, but it was blotted out by their pride. It appears in the
0.88
00:11:03.380
Old Testament. I'll give you one example. Psalm 62, 12, for God will render to a man according
00:11:08.220
to his work. Matthew 16, 27, for the son of man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his
00:11:15.700
father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Revelation 22, 12,
00:11:23.540
behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me to repay everyone for what he has done.
00:11:31.040
So each of us are going to stand individually before God on judgment day.
00:11:41.320
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,
00:11:45.860
so that each one may receive what is due for what has been done in the body,
00:11:55.100
So ultimately, guys, God will render to each one a certain degree
00:12:00.440
of punishment. We often view hell as this one-size-fits-all, kind of everybody's down
00:12:08.180
there equally damned. But this teaches that there's going to be a diverse set of punishments
00:12:15.480
that are varying in severity as it correlates to our frequency and grievousness of our sin.
00:12:22.360
And so there's a divine record-keeping going on here, and he's going to repay according to how
00:12:27.560
we lived. And so this is essential and interesting. This would also really terrify the non-believer
00:12:35.660
and sober up the Christian. And so one thing I want to make very clear here, as you might be
1.00
00:12:43.420
thinking, okay, so as Christians, we're going to stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
00:12:46.600
What does that mean for us? I thought that we were saved by grace and what's going on there.
00:12:50.540
So while the saint's final verdict, the final verdict of a Christian does not rest upon their
00:12:58.500
works, we will be justified. We cannot live as if we're not going to stand before God.
00:13:05.660
So our final verdict will be righteous because Christ is righteous. But we have to live in a way
00:13:13.080
that we realize that we will stand in judgment before God. And so 2 Corinthians 5, 9 says,
00:13:20.260
So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it,
00:13:27.940
for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. So God is keeping, again, this divine
00:13:33.240
record of our honorable and dishonorable deeds. We have to rest in the distinguishing difference
00:13:41.940
between judgment and condemnation. There's a difference between judgment and condemnation.
00:13:47.960
We can rest in Romans 8.1 that says, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
00:13:55.020
So what we have to realize is that each Christian will be judged, but no Christian will be condemned.
00:14:02.120
Okay, so we will stand before the judgment seat, but we will not be condemned.
00:14:06.380
But we still need to live in a way that we realize that we should be obeying because there is a judgment coming.
00:14:13.960
So this should give us both concern for our obedience, but also hope for our eternity.
00:14:19.720
Now, you might be asking, again, this question about how does this change the way that we live?
00:14:25.820
How should we obey in a way? Is there going to be some sort of a reward? Is there going to be
00:14:30.400
some sort of punishment at all? I believe that scripture does teach that there will be a reward.
00:14:35.700
Matthew 6, 19 through 20 tells us to lay up for ourselves treasure in heaven. Luke 6, 35 says,
00:14:43.400
but love your enemies and do good and lend, expect nothing in return, and your reward will be great,
00:14:49.500
and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Hebrews 6.10
00:14:57.060
says, for God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for
00:15:05.320
his name in serving the saints as you still do. And so this is something that the righteousness
00:15:11.500
of Christ keeps us from condemnation, but our obedience keeps us from losing our reward.
00:15:20.520
And so that's essentially what this passage is teaching us. Obedience is essential to the
00:15:25.000
Christian faith. So Titus 1.6 says, they profess to know God, but they deny him by their works.
1.00
00:15:32.780
They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work. So the question you have to ask yourself
00:15:38.380
is, does your life show that you know God? Are you resting in Christ while still working for
00:15:47.820
your reward? That's a really intricate balance. Are you resting in Christ while still also working
00:15:55.780
for your reward? Not working for your salvation, not working for a justification, but working for
00:16:01.340
your reward. You want to please God. Is that true of your life? The apostle then describes the groups
00:16:07.860
which all humanity fall into. And so verses seven and eight, it says, and those who by patience in
00:16:13.500
well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are
00:16:18.840
self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.
00:16:26.300
So we have to remember, again, this section of scripture is a piece of a segment or an argument
00:16:33.660
that is much larger than this small paragraph. This is really part of a multi-chapter section
00:16:40.280
where Paul is leading a discussion of the Jews into the gospel, but he's talking about judgment,
00:16:46.500
he's talking about law, he's talking about Christ. We're going to see that, the lack of
0.95
00:16:50.580
righteousness that we have in chapter three. And so this is a piece that fits within a greater
00:16:55.620
context, and we need to understand that he's trying to use familiar language to the Jews
00:16:59.940
that we're going to see, again, more clarity in chapters, later in chapter 2, 3, 4, and 5.
00:17:06.640
But the first group is people who seek for glory and honor and immortality. And as we know,
00:17:13.260
these three things can only be found in Christ alone. So then he goes on to tell us of really
00:17:20.540
the second group, which to the Jew would sound more like Paul is speaking to the Gentiles,
00:17:27.060
but he's really speaking to the Jews. He says, but for those who are self-seeking and do not
0.97
00:17:32.740
obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. Nevertheless, Paul really
00:17:40.700
does offer three characteristics of these people who are perishing, and he's absolutely including
1.00
00:17:46.120
the Jews and the Gentiles in the same group here. First, he says about these people, they are seeking
0.96
00:17:52.140
self-approval rather than God's approval. They are, in a real sense, make themselves out to be
00:17:58.460
the arbiter of what is right and wrong. This is very pharisaical. This is something that you would
00:18:03.160
see in the Jewish culture. This is also something we see in modern culture. People love to be
00:18:08.540
self-seeking and self-serving. Walter Chantry, he said a great quote,
00:18:14.040
the roots of this depravity are quite evident in very young children. Babies may not show all the
00:18:20.980
ugly outworking of sin, but their selfishness is quite apparent. Any time of the day or night,
00:18:28.160
they will howl when their little egos are annoyed. Brothers and sisters have noticed how small
00:18:34.060
children are self-seeking. When treats are being given, a me-first attitude prevails. Small children
00:18:41.540
want the chief attention. It is all self-serving. This all-demanding self will mature into that of
00:18:49.160
grasping adult. Though clever devices, they will make their selfishness polite and genteel,
00:18:55.900
but their goal remains the same. Self. Self is the idol that carries many men to hell.
00:19:02.040
So this is talking about selfishness that we live in a culture that is absolutely saturated
00:19:09.220
with self-love, self-seeking, self-confidence. This is a self-loving culture. The next thing
00:19:17.180
he talks about is these people do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness. And so this is
00:19:24.680
an echo of gospel truth, right? This is, you're not obeying Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth,
00:19:30.560
and the life, but you're obeying unrighteousness, lawlessness, Satan. He is your father. He is the
00:19:37.720
one that you're obeying. He's talking about these people who are lost. And then Paul closes by saying
00:19:42.240
that for these people, they will experience wrath and fury. Okay, so God is a God of justice. We
00:19:49.320
know this. We don't expect that even a human judge is going to overlook a crime against the law of
00:19:57.460
our land. So we can't expect a perfect judge to overlook the crimes against a divine moral law.
00:20:05.180
God must punish sin to maintain his perfect justice. And so Eric Alexander once said,
00:20:15.380
is that there is no shelter from the wrath of God.
00:20:25.220
Rather fear him who can destroy both body and soul in hell.
00:20:29.940
So hell is where God essentially is pouring out
00:20:33.740
his fury and his wrath upon those who have broken his law
00:20:39.460
and not found peace and righteousness through Jesus Christ. And so Paul then turns really to
00:20:47.320
his central objective for this passage of scripture, which is really to lay the groundwork
0.94
00:20:51.200
for Christ as a requirement for all people, both Jew and Gentile, that they essentially can't keep
00:20:58.620
the law, that the judgment is coming. He wants to assure the Jewish people and make sure that
00:21:06.680
they're really not pacifying themselves with some fantasy that they won't experience eternal
00:21:13.000
destruction if they don't turn to Christ. Jesus Christ, again, leveled the playing field. This is
00:21:19.280
something new for the Jewish culture. No one comes to God except through him. And he says in verse 9
00:21:24.840
through 11, there will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first
0.69
00:21:30.420
and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also
00:21:37.320
the Greek, for God shows no partiality. Again, he's not talking about moralism here. This is a small
00:21:43.880
section of a greater argument, a coordinated argument that he's putting together that's going
00:21:48.820
to get more and more clear in chapter two, chapter three, chapter four, and chapter five. So we can't
00:21:53.640
take this out and really do an exegesis of this passage of scripture and apply it incorrectly
00:22:00.300
without looking the context by which this passage is resting upon. And so the point that Paul's
00:22:07.100
making here is that as it pertains to judgment and our reward is that both Jews and Greeks were
00:22:12.620
now equal before God. And namely, God does not show partiality between these two groups of people.
00:22:18.540
The exclusivity, the specialness, the privileged nature of the Jews had come to an end. And this is
00:22:26.060
a major dispensational shift. And I say that in terms of just a shift in a dispensation of time.
00:22:33.560
God's chosen people were anyone who believed. Now, this is why we need to, this is good context for
00:22:42.140
people that need to understand the shift of the culture of the New Testament writers. The
00:22:46.380
superiority complex of the Jews is the reason we have verses like 1 John 2.2 that says,
1.00
00:22:53.900
he is the propitiation for our sins, that is the Jews, and not for ours only, the Jews,
0.98
00:23:01.440
but also for the sins of the whole world. Now, we have so many people that use that passage of
0.51
00:23:06.640
scripture that say, oh no, Jesus didn't die just for the elect. He died for everybody.
00:23:11.700
He died for the sins of the whole world. They don't understand the cultural context of that
00:23:17.540
passage of scripture, that the Jews really believed that they were a special people and that
00:23:25.480
they were God's special people and only the Messiah would come for them. And so when Jesus
0.85
00:23:31.480
opened up his grace and salvation to the entire world, essentially with this passage in 1 John 2,
00:23:39.000
2, he's a propitiation for our sins and not only for the Jews, but also for the sins of every tribe,
00:23:45.820
nation, and tongue. Not for every individual, because then we'd be universalists. He's not
00:23:51.220
the propitiation for every single individual in the world, or for the whole world as a whole,
00:23:56.900
including all people. He's the propitiation for not just the Jews only, but for people who believe
00:24:02.700
in every tribe, nation, and tongue. So this is a shift. This is also John 3, 16, right? For God
00:24:08.520
so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish,
00:24:14.780
but have eternal life. This is another example of that God loves the world. He's saying that
00:24:20.660
God doesn't just love Israel. He loves the whole world, not only as a creation, but he loves his
00:24:26.940
people from every tribe and nation and tongue. But it's only those people who believe that will
00:24:33.960
be saved. And there will be people who believe from every nation, tribe, and tongue. And so now
00:24:40.820
Now, today's lesson really is summed up in the idea that moralism and pride are the most potent
00:24:50.760
forms of poison for the human soul. Moralism and pride. If you're working to keep yourself saved,
00:24:59.620
you need to realize that's not the gospel. If you're believing that you can have some sort
00:25:05.580
of law-keeping and God's happier with you in the sense that he's giving you more justified nature
00:25:12.440
or you're maintaining your status as a son or daughter of God. That's not true. No, you're only
00:25:20.080
made righteous and justified by Christ alone or through your faith in Christ alone. Now, yes,
00:25:26.260
you can please God with your behavior in the sense that you are walking in obedience for what Christ
00:25:32.020
is done for you, and you can have that desire to be obedient for a greater reward, but your
00:25:39.360
motivation is for the reward, not for your salvation. And those two are very different
00:25:44.240
things. And so, again, if you, like the Jews, believe that you can simply ride into heaven
1.00
00:25:50.980
because of some confidence you have in your heritage, or you went to church enough, or
0.98
00:25:56.120
your family's Catholic or your family's Christian, or you said a prayer when you were a little kid
00:26:02.100
at church camp or whatever it may be. If you think heaven is achieved by good behavior or
00:26:08.620
church attendance, again, you are deceived. You cannot think that way. That is not the gospel of
00:26:13.020
Jesus Christ. That's not good news that you have to work your way. No, it's absolutely that the
00:26:17.700
work has been done in Christ. Good behavior is simply the fruit of salvation. It's not the root
00:26:23.720
of salvation. Jesus Christ is the root of salvation. So we obey because of what Christ has
00:26:28.980
done. We obey because we will stand before the King. We obey because we want to please God.
00:26:34.900
That's what we're trying to get across here. So second, we learn that God does not show partiality.
00:26:40.300
All of us have the same future outside of Christ. We all have the same future. We're destined for
00:26:46.040
wrath and fury because we've all broken the law. If you trust in Christ, you will inherit eternal
00:26:51.100
life. If you trust in yourself, you will inherit eternal wrath and fury. Those are the two
00:26:57.040
destinations that Paul is getting across here. So the evidence of those who trust in Christ
00:27:03.020
will be written on your life, right? If you have peace and joy and compassion and the fruits of
00:27:10.040
the Spirit, you will be marked with Christ and you will have eternal life. If you have anxiety
00:27:15.820
and anger and worry and fear. You're marked with Satan and you're not going to inherit
00:27:21.960
eternal life. So again, my encouragement to you is this, examine yourself. Are you working
00:27:29.500
to keep yourself saved or are you working for your reward? Are you resting in Christ?
00:27:36.040
Are you understanding the universal judgment of God and how it differs from condemnation
00:27:40.960
for the Christian. So again, run to Christ alone, cling to him for your righteousness. That is the
00:27:48.360
core message of today. So hopefully this was edifying and helpful for you guys to understand
00:27:53.280
just another dimension and mechanical piece of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you're a regular
